Lucas Peterson
As a father, I find stories like this particularly repugnant.
In March of 2007, 22-year-old Lucas Peterson, a known methamphetamine user, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
His 14-month-old daughter, Trista Michelle Peterson, had been reported missing by relatives since January 6th of 2007.
Authorities had been to his residence on the 30th of January, 2007, looking for the little girl, but they couldn’t find either her or Lucas.
Because he was the custodial parent of his daughter while her mother was serving time in York’s women’s prison for theft and writing bad checks, Lucas Peterson was asked by investigators where the little girl was.
Of course, this father of the year candidate said he didn’t know.
Well, it turns out that he did know.
He led officials to his daughter’s corpse, buried in a shallow grave just a short ways away from a county road. The grave had been dug in the middle of a grove of cedar trees that was located on an abandoned farmstead.
Trista Peterson had been buried in a fresh diaper and pajamas. She was wrapped in a blanket and placed deep in the cold, wintry, Nebraska soil.
Lucas Peterson was charged with child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence. He confessed that he had killed Trista on January 3rd when he threw her into a playpen full of hard toys because he was angry.
An autopsy showed that the baby had endured a number of serious hits resulting in blunt force trauma to virtually every part of her body.
Update:
Lucas Peterson’s felony child abuse resulting in death charge has been dropped. Judge Alan Gless ruled that a cooperation agreement between sheriff’s deputies and Lucas Peterson required the county to amend the felony charge to misdemeanor concealing the death of a human.
Gless said that Lucas Peterson led law enforcement officers to his daughter’s shallow grave four months after her death only after he was led to believe he would not be prosecuted on felony charges.
According to the judge:
Lucas performed his understanding of his part of the agreement, and in performing, he acted to his detriment. Thus I order the state to: honor the cooperation agreement, charge Lucas Peterson with concealing the death of a human … a Class I misdemeanor, and dismiss the present charges against him.
No justice.

I live in Seward, and new Lucas in passing. If I believed in hell, I would think that Lucas would have the fast track to the deepest pits.
But I don’t, so I will have to be comforted by the fact that when Lucas gets out of jail, he is going to have a lots of pissed off people gunning for him. And some of these people are REALLY nasty individuals. Part of his “deal” with sheriffs was to roll on some of his previous drug dealing contacts. Bad idea, dumb ass. I just wish I could have a shot at kicking his ass, it would make me feel better about the whole thing. But I have too much to lose to risk it on scum like this, especially when rumor has that he will have a bitter end anyways.
There is alot of talk about legalizing drugs, I wonder if these type of things would not happen as much if these loosers were able to get their drugs easier. I am a reporter that has covered this case from the start. It’s very complicated and from a source, the most difficult case an attorney has ever worked. Mostly because the Seward County Attorney did not guide the case properly. We’ve all seen the crime shows and who is it that guides investigations? The county attorney’s office! But not in this case! I have three full notebooks on Peterson and if anybody has read the autopsy report, it is absolutely disturbing…Peterson beat that baby until she died, then he laid her on his chest befoe giving her a bath, dressing her in a fresh diaper and blanket and finally, burying her on an abandoned farmstead IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY. He even told the sheriff’s department that a car drove by as he was burying Trista. No one could have saved Trista. She was gone before being reported missing by the grandparents. But the investigation was screwed from the beginning. My opinion? Officials knew they had to find that baby, the pressure was on. So they hurried the investigation without the county attorney’s help. Yes, they got him to confess, but by then it was too late. I’m not sure what will happen, there are so many loopholes in our system and the attorneys always seem to find it. If anyone has information that will help the reporting, don’t hesitate to respond! I know this case back and forth and may someday put it in the form of a book.

V.M. I’m not sure where your information is from, but official transcripts of interviews with Lucas Peterson show he admitted to throwing his daughter, so they were definitely together that night. He was mad at her because many times before she had got up after they laid her down for bed. This particular night she got up and made him mad and he admitted he was on meth. I think he also said he hadn’t slept recently, like for a couple of days. Before the night he was interviewed and led officers to the baby’s grave, he lied several times about where she was and had officers searching for a black mercedes belonging to a drug dealer that took the baby. Finally, the officers looked to other law enforcement for answers and were told he was lying about the drug dealer. That’s when they stepped up the questioning. That’s when his rights were supposedly violated and the whole mess began.
He was set free by the court of appeals because they found his miranda rights were violated. He was free for a little over a year. In that time, he moved to Columbus and got a girlfriend. When they arrested him because the Supreme Court found one little glitch that could hold him accountable, the gf was pregnant. Recently, they married, it’s in the Lancaster Court records. His name is Lucas Joiner Peterson and he is married. A sentencing date has not been set as of now. He is facing felony child abuse resulting in death. Appeals are a great source of accurate information on a crime, but sometimes lack the detail I’m looking for. The Nebraska Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Appellate court’s ruling was my jackpot, and verified what my common sense had told me all along had happened. People like V.M. think they can blow smoke up everyone’s ass and no one will ever challenge them, as long as they sound like they’re telling the truth – We believe that challenging them to provide verifiable evidence to back up their claims is the best way to expose their lies. It’s the least we can do for that little child lying dead in a hole out in the middle of nowhere, just because she wouldn’t go to sleep.

as of September 2010 Lucas Peterson has been arrested and is being held in Lincoln at the D&E, he will be facing trail over the death of Trista, its about time, he has been set free for over a year now, and nothing was done to him now that the supreme court has over ruled this case he will finally be charged with two felony charges as far as i know and they both hold 20yrs to life, well all i can say is that he could not prove back in 2007 that Trista’s death was an accident what makes you think 2010 will be different? i hope he gets what he deserves!!! Lucas Peterson jailed again for charges involving daughter’s death
A Platte County man who was released from jail after leading law enforcement to the body of his baby daughter in 2007 is back behind bars.
25–year–old Lucas Peterson was released from jail about a year ago after a deal with law enforcement.
He agreed to lead authorities to the 14 month old’s body if his charges were reduced.
But, last week, the high court overturned the ruling of a Seward County judge who had thrown out charges against Peterson because of the deal.
Peterson was arrested Friday on a Seward County warrant.
But, his attorneys said Seward County had no power to issue the warrant and are asking for the Supreme Court to release him from custody.

i remember this very well. the baby was found in one of my friends families old fields the day of our junior prom. there were cops and news crews all over town. he did recieve immunity because he led the police to her body so they gave him a deal. only thing he got charged with was child abuse and tampering with evidence. most of the papers say it happened in seward county. but tristas body was discovered in dwight, which is in butler county, but we only have a circuit judge that comes by once or twice a week so it was sent to seward where they could handle it better. my high school teacher taught him and she said there was always something weird about him. plus he waited til trista’s mom was in jail before he killed his daughter. what a sick man. i hope he gets what he deserves. child abusers usually get it worse in the state pen give him life or better yet give him the death penalty.
I met Lucas after he was released. I did not know what he did or was accused of until he told me (that he buried her) he denied actually killing her but that leaves a lot of questions with no answers.

A 19 year old Columbus girl is carrying his unborn child. Hopefully he’ll be sentenced to life before he gets a chance to ruin more lives.

I have no intentions of turning this thread into one about or against the mother of his unborn child, but I would like to respond, as I may have been misunderstood.
1. I’m not trying to throw that girl under the bus, but I’m not her friend–I just know who she is. If you know her as well, you should know that anyone who knows someone who knows her knows all about it. If you live in the same town or county of that girl, you’ve heard about it. I’m actually shocked that her name hasn’t been mentioned anywhere yet.
2. If you know her, you would know she’s not trying to move on with her life and he is definitely not out of the picture. Maybe you don’t know that or you wouldn’t be so quick to defend her, but if you do, you should be more concerned about her well-being as well as her baby’s instead of trying to keep secrets. Might save a life.
3. I posted that because I am concerned that there is soon going to be another baby in the world that this guy could possibly have access to. That should be seriously alarming and any and all legal measures should be taken to prevent that from happening.

Everybody reading and posting on this list about this piece of shit needs to fax Judge Alan G Gless at 402-643-2950 and express your outrage at the deal they made with this piece of shit and demand that he be sentanced to the full 25 years he faces and not be let out early. Express your outrage that someone can be sentenced to 30-50 years for abusing a kid, and rightfully so, while this piece of shit gets 1-25 for killing his own kid. Apparently in Nebraska it is better to kill a kid than assault one.

The piece of shit is being sentenced on May 19th. It is not to late to fax the judge and demand he never gets out.
I know that this is an old thread, but for those of you who are still reading this, then an update for you. http://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/article_32c4985b-655a-5ffe-afda-e522f31a3e31.html He will serve at least 10 years for the murder of his daughter. It is not enough, but there is no helping Lucas. I do know him, and have for many years. He was very close to my family, and when we took him in, I treated him like a little brother. He had a very hard home life and allowed himself to ruin himself. He was getting better and was showing promise. But He just couldn’t change the Devil inside himself. He destroyed himself, and took his daughter with him. I can forgive him for all he has done, for it is not my place to judge, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t close to impossible. He could always charm the pants off any woman that he wanted and it sickens me to think that there will be another child out there that will have to live with him as a father. We just need to remember that the decisions that we make can place our children in the line of fire.
