This is 26-year-old Edwin Hall.
Edwin Hall had no criminal record until the 6th of June, 2007. He did, however, have a juvenile record of assault, which he was charged with after hitting another boy in the head with a baseball bat. Edwin Hall, an orphan who was adopted when he was seven, was returned to state custody at age 15 after threatening his adoptive family’s daughter with a knife.
On the 2nd of June, 2007, Edwin Hall was caught on videotape following 18-year-old Kelsey Smith into a Target at the Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, Kansas.
More surveillance video from the Target showed Kelsey Smith purchasing a present for her boyfriend to celebrate their sixth month together. After completing her purchase, she left the store and disappeared.
Kelsey Smith was supposed to receive a promise ring from her boyfriend later that night. She was supposed to meet Biersmith at her parents’ house at around 7:20 p.m. that night but he was running late. The couple, who were described as “inseparable,” were supposed to go to a pool party, then to dinner together around 9:30. That’s when her boyfriend was planning to give her the ring.
Instead, she was dead.
About two hours later, Kelsey Smith’s car was found abandoned outside of the Macy’s in the Oak Park mall parking lot across the street. Her purse and wallet had been left in the car.
Police detectives were able to find the body of Kelsey Smith because of a cell phone ping that originated from the area on the 2nd of June when her boyfriend had tried to call her. A few areas that the ping could have been transmitted from were were quickly identified.
After a few days of searching, on the 6th of June, 2007, searchers discovered the body of Kelsey Smith, which had been dumped into a shallow creek 20 miles east of the Target Store. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation.
After reviewing the surveillance tapes, police discovered that Edwin Hall’s vehicle matched the description of a dark mid-1970s Chevrolet pickup that was seen entering the Target parking lot shortly after Smith’s car. Edwin Hall was interviewed and arrested on the 6th of June, 2007.
Hall was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping on the 7th of June, 2007.
On the 1st of August, 2007, Edwin Hall was indicted for murder, rape and aggravated sodomy, making him eligible for the death penalty.
As part of a plea agreement, on the 23rd of July, 2008, Edwin Hall pled guilty to all four charges that had been brought against him during what was supposed to be a simple change-of-venue hearing.
Edwin Hall’s guilty plea was put in the day after a judge had ruled that the death penalty could stay on the table after a defense motion seeking dismissal of the case on a technicality was denied.
