How many times can a man be executed?
A jury insisted Robert Rhoades be given a second death sentence.
Already on death row for the 1996 torture-killing of 8-year-old Michael Lyons, he now has been found guilty for the 1984 rape and murder of 18-year-old Julie Connell.
DNA evidence taken from Rhoades in the Lyons case gave investigators a perfect match to DNA that had been collected from Julie Connell’s body.
Connell disappeared on the 20th of April in 1984 after she went to a a local park to study and read a book - five days after he 18th birthday.
Her bruised body was found in an animal corral in Palomares Canyon near Castro Valley five days later.
Her left wrist was wrapped 12 times with green twine in a “complicated knot,” her right wrist was severely cut and her neck was slashed.
Robert Rhoades also had been convicted of sexually molesting his 4-year-old step-granddaughter in 1993 and kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman at knife point in Yuba County in 1985, 16 months after Connell was killed.
That victim described for jurors in the Connell trial how she escaped Rhoades by flinging herself out of his moving vehicle.
“It was haunting to listen to her talk about how Mr. Rhoades destroyed evidence, telling her ‘I’m smart’ and that ’smart people are the ones who get away’ ” the presiding Judge said.
Michael Lyons’ mother, Sandra Fuller said of Rhoades, “It’s hard to believe that such evil people walk among us.”
