One of 15 children, Jimmy Maketta left home at an early age, living on the streets, committing the usual crimes.
Somewhere along the line, he got “Jesus” tattooed on his upper lip, which was rather distinctive to his many victims.
Between March of 1996 and December of 1999, Mr. Maketta raped and murdered, seemingly at will.
Jimmy Maketta’s antics scared the living bejeezus out of several small South African towns. Households were so scared that their family members would be the next victims that they started sleeping four families to a building.
Jimmy Maketta stalked his potential victims like a panther, sitting on a hill with a good view of the local farms and watching who left with whom and who was going to get drunk. Waiting until dark, he would break into houses and rape and kill.
Leaving his cell phone at one of the crime scenes led to his capture. Several letters he had written to his family detailing his crimes led to his confession of many murders and rapes that the police were unaware of.
Mr. Maketta was finally convicted of 16 counts of murder and 19 counts of rape.
After 25 years, when Mr. Jimmy Maketta is in his late 60’s, he can appear before a judge who will then decide whether or not to let him out.
