A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy for five years and a retired Manhattan Beach police officer, Shawn Michael Shelton had the trust of the community for over a decade.

Well, I think that trust is gone now.

After medically retiring in 2003 due to a conflict with his fellow officers over his homosexual tendencies and HIV-positive status, Shelton left for Las Vegas.

In May of 2006, while driving his black Hummer H2, Shawn Shelton came across a teenage skateboarder sitting at a bus stop near a Las Vegas Mall.

Shelton got out of his car, flashed a badge and ordered the 14-year-old boy into his vehicle, where he handcuffed and searched the kid, claiming he resembled a murder suspect.

Ronald Mallay, a 61-year-old Guyanese immigrant, had an idea.

He could buy life insurance policies from his friend Richard James, a Metlife insurance agent, for other Guyanese immigrants, who were, of course, unaware that their deaths were worth a lot of money to Ronald Mallay.

Some of these immigrants were related to Mallay.

Once the policies were bought, all Mallay had to do was wait for them to die and he could collect rich rewards.

The only problem with his idea?

People weren’t dying fast enough.

His solution?

Kill them all.

In one instance, Mallay took out a $400,000 insurance policy on his own brother-in-law before hiring a hit man to gun him down.

Wednesday the 27th of June at around 11 at night was the wrong time.

The Subway in Merritt Island, Florida was the wrong place.

If Donicio Arrindell and his friend Fredrick Gadson had just gone in and ordered a few cold cut combos, everything would have been just fine.

They didn’t, of course. They decided that this Subway would be a great place to rob.

They hadn’t counted on 71-year-old John Lovell – a retired marine with a concealed weapons permit – being there, enjoying a veggie sub.

If it wasn’t for Robert Bridges, the 27th of August in the year 2006 would have been a nice night for one 38-year-old woman.

She was walking her dog, a black lab, through the park, not knowing that her life would change forever in a matter of minutes.

Robert Bridges saw her walking through the park.

He followed her.

He had a knife.

When the moment was ripe, like the predator he is, he attacked the lone woman.

He forced her to perform sexually, threatening her with his knife at her throat the entire time.

When he was done, she tried to run off.

That was when Robert Bridges slashed her throat with the knife.

Their life of crime took a more serious turn when, one night in October of 2000, they broke into the house that 73-year-old Marie Greening Zidan shared with her 47-year-old developmentally-challenged son, stealing a purse and $10.
