That’s 17-year-old Heyley Petit, 11-year-old Michaela Petit, and 48-year-old Jennifer Hawke-Petit, wife of 50-year-old Dr. William Petit, a a noted specialist in diabetes and endocrinology and the medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain.
Janet Petit worked as a nurse and co-director of a local boarding school.
Hayley started a charity which was named “Hayley’s Hope.” Through her charity, she raised over $50,000 to fight multiple sclerosis, which her mother had been diagnosed with 8 years prior. She was also co-editor in chief of the school newspaper, co-captain of the crew team and a member of the basketball and cross country teams.
She had been accepted to Dartmouth.
They were a happy family.
This is Joshua Komisarjevsky.
26-year-old Joshua was born to teenage parents who gave him up as a child. He was adopted by the wealthy Komisarjevsky family, whose lineage includes famous theater director Theodore Komisarjevsky.
His adopted parents are rather well-to-do and live two minutes from the Petit family.
Always a distant child, Joshua Komisarjevsky committed his first burglary at the age of 14. He’s been in and out of jails ever since.
He has a 5-year-old daughter, which he was given sole custody of.
At one point, Joshua Komisarjevsky met Steven Hayes, probably while they were living at the same halfway house.
This is 44-year-old Steven Hayes.
Hayes’ criminal record dates back to 1980 and includes more than two dozen convictions for burglary, larceny, marijuana possession, theft of a firearm and escape from custody.
On July 23rd, at 2 in the morning, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes were out on parole after serving time for burglary. They reported to a parole officer on a weekly basis and both had full-time jobs.
On July 23rd, at 3 in the morning, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes kicked in the door to the Petit residence, expecting to do a quick burglary job and split the proceeds.
The problem was, the Petit family was home at the time.
The two career felons beat down Dr. Petit, giving him head injuries that would send him to the hospital.
Steven Haynes tied up and raped Mrs. Petit. Joshua Komisarjevsky tied up the two girls and raped little 11-year-old Michaela Petit.
Once they were done, they waited with the family, having their fun until the banks opened in the morning.
They arranged to have Mrs. Petit accompany one of them to the bank to make a withdrawal of $15,000. During this bank visit, Mrs. Petit was able to alert the teller that something was wrong. The teller called police, who went to the Petit house to check things out.
Taking Mrs. Petit back to her house, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes strangled and killed her.
Setting the house on fire to cover their tracks, they left the rest of the Petit family, still alive, to die in the fire.
Dr. Petit made it out. The two girls died of smoke inhalation.
Both Komisarjevsky and Hayes were caught when they rammed three police vehicles as the two were leaving the Petit house while driving the Petit family’s SUV.
So what do you think should be done with Mr. Komisarjevsky and Mr. Hayes?

Do you think a nice long sit-down conversation with the career criminals who, while out on parole, invaded his house, raped his wife and daughters, killed them, and set his house on fire would make him feel better?
The two have been hit with six counts of capital felony murder, among other charges, such as sexual assault.
The prosecutor is pursuing the death penalty. That’s probably the best choice.

Does it really matter dear? One of then raped the little girl…she WAS alive when they set the place on fire, although you’re right about the smoke inhalation. Her older sister had already been strangled to death, along with mom. I live a few miles from where this happened, and people are still having a hard time letting it go, so I understand Frederick’s anger, especially when you consider that the judge went through the trouble of putting a note in Komisarjevsky’s file to the parole board stating his opinion that the kid was on his way to violent crime and shouldn’t be paroled. Too bad the board never saw that report. There’s lots of reasons to rant about this case.

i was released from prison not to long ago (and yes as an ex-convict i do not condone this type of behavior) and both of these suspects are in protective custody for their own safety, they aren’t allowed any contact with the general population. however the prison cooks do spit, piss and shit in their food trays. and im sure the guards prolly slam on their cell doors at night so they cant sleep.

Atty Groggins is going to be piad by the State of CT to defend Joshua. She has never returned my email answering my question as to what her “reduced rate of pay” is going to be.
I beleive that Atty Groggins also should be sent to hell. There are so many other worthy casues and the simple fact is that the state want to raise taxes! In as much as I agree with parts of your opinion, the idea that the attorney did no wrong is a fallacy.
An attorney cannot always hope for innocent clients, but to so exceed the truth of the situation to hire authors and PR firms to rewrite the course of events is gross and should lead to her disbarment.

Today is June 16th 2008 and these POS are going to court today. They had the balls to enter “not guilty” pleas. Gotta be the advice of the attys – who else is going to profit by keeping these scum bags alive?

I definitely agree that what these two men did was awful, disgusting, and totally wrong but no one, not even crazy murderers deserve to die. Everyone deserves to live no matter what they’ve done. I believe in forgiveness and prayer, so I will pray that these men and others like them will change their ways and feel guilt and repent. And everyone can contradict me if they want but I’m sticking with my morales and ideas. Wanting someone dead and hoping that they suffer is just as bad as actually killing them. And yeah don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty upset about what happened to the Petit girls, it’s just that I believe the only person who can decide someone’s death is God and we all need to remember that.

Judy – though your compassion is nice, your thinking is flawed. First – you say that “everyone deserves to live…” what about the victims? Didn’t they deserve to live?
Then you say “the only person (person?) who can decide death is God…” well, in this case, the death of three innocent people was decided by two criminals. Unless you are one of those people who believe that God is responsible for killing them.
If you believe in God, then you must also believe that he will not punish the victims. And if your theory is correct (that we should not kill murdering scumballs) then they should get no extra punishment from God for being killed.

I’m going to have to disagree with you Judy, and let me explain why:
I do not believe in vengeance or vigilante-ism. When people say “let’s torture and rape them!”, that does sound a little crazy to me. What I believe in, is a society’s right to protect itself. When people commit crimes like this, and especially if they make a living out of it like these two, then I believe they have proved themselves to no longer be human. You say every human has the right to live? I don’t think these two are human anymore. They do not belong in society, and society has the right to protect itself by disposing of them. You don’t belong here anymore, you need to go.
Maybe that’s a simplistic way of looking at it, and maybe my mind would change if I lost someone close to me to such a horrific death, but for now, that’s my view on the death penalty. And I don’t think these two “people” should carry on in society and be given the chance to destroy another family.

Those two less-than human beings deserve every bad thing coming to them. If they’re are out of the picture, less people will suffer. I support Hammurabi’s Code in most things – especially the ‘eye for an eye’ part. Unfortunately, it’s not always so easy to enforce. Too bad. I’d love to see this guy reverted to an 11 year old, ass-and-mouth-raped repeatedly, aged to his current years and put to death.

I am a Christian and I strongly believe in capital punishment. A dichotomy? Sure, but I’m human; I’m certainly no Christ. While we have been told to turn the other check, I believe it was only once. Within a year they will be institutanlised (sp) and be quite happy to go about there day to day lives and no matter how awful we think that must be trust me they just get used to it . Joshua Komisarjevsky does not deserve the death penalty. He has a huge heart and would not deliberately kill people in cold blood. Hayes was the murderer in this situation. These posts are full of ignorance. Waste taxpayer’s money?? It costs about 10 times more to put someone on death row awaiting execution than it does to support one person’s life in prison. Joshua Komisarjevsky does not deserve the death penalty. He has a huge heart and would not deliberately kill people in cold blood. Hayes was the murderer in this situation. I would not be suprised if Dr. Petit was in on the plot and set the whole thing up. Why does everyone tip toe around him? Why hasn’t he been interrogated more thoroughly? Mrs. Petit gave a sign to the Bank teller and then she called the police. I am curious to know why the criminals still had the time to go back to the house and be able to burn it and get into a car and attempt to escape. I might be missing information or maybe the timing just was too quick or something but the police should have been there quick, maybe enough to save the girls? I’m sure there is no blame on the police in anyway (possibly) and they did what they needed to be safe and go through the right steps about this case but this whole case is just frustrating and very sad.
For the most part I’m against the death penalty. I think it should be used sparingly, only for those circumstances where the crime had deep and lasting effects on the fabric of society–like 911, the Oklahoma city bombings, Columbine (if the perps had lived), Ft Hood, and…this case. Something about it HAS affected the very fabric of society, esp. in the place it happened, but really everywhere. Dr.Petit is a wonderful man,warm,caring,and compassionate. I happen to know this because I was a patient of his for many years. He often talked about “his girls”. The only problem I have with the death penalty when it comes to “people” like this is that it takes too long and is in no way painful enough. Why can’t the punishment be cruel and unusual if the a crime is? I thought the punishment was supposed to fit.
Yes I live in the state where this happened. I truly don’t know how Dr. Petit can get up each morning and function. This man is amazing, he is a well liked Dr. and the family was well liked. Life has to be hell for this poor man. However, he has certainly done the best he can. He had the home where this tragedy happened razed and now there is just a flower garden. Komisarjevsky asked once to speak to Dr. Petit, Dr. Petit promptly went to get a restraining order against Komisarjevsky ever contacting him. He doesn’t want to hear anything he has to say. I totally agree with him. Hayes is a big crybaby, who just got another gag order, whining about Dr. Petit talking to people. He’s always having a problem. First he was having depression problems, he’d do anything to not face the music. Hayes and Komisarjevsky purposely picked Joanna Petit and her daughters in a local grocery store, and followed them home. Waited until dark, and broke into the home, beat Dr. Petit with a baseball bat, and threw him in the cellar, left for dead. Then upstairs Komisarjevsky is said to have tied the girls in their beds, and raped poor little Michaela, meanwhile Hayes is said to have raped Joanna, who also was suffering from MS. The horror these poor women saw in their last hours is unspeakable. While the house was beginning to burn down, a badly beaten and terror-striken, Dr. Petit crawled out of a cellar window, and crawled over to a neighbors house. I can’t believe custody of Komisarjevsky’s 5 year old daughter, was given to him. If he could rape a 11 year old girl, what kind of father could he be?? I was also surprized to hear that neither of these evil men, were drunk or on any kind of drugs whatsoever. Not that it would make it different, just points to how purely evil these two were.
Nobody should have to live through what Dr. Petit did. I saw him on TV news recently, each year he organizes a Walk for MS, in honor of his wife.

3. Reblame Dr. Petit – Look at some past crimes – Charles Staurt, Susan Smith – each appeared to be a victim like William Petit, but were found guilty…. I am sure that there was at least one cop who was looking for the same thing here. Just doing their job. I am sure if Mr Petit were guilty of something he’d be in jail now.
4. Culture Change – before this crime occured, Gov M Jodi Rell broadcast messages (public service announcements) telling us to cooperate with criminals as to avoid the escalation of violence. 3 years later, anyone who cooperates 100% is looked upon as a fool.
5. Blame the police – did not act quickly enough – were following protocol for a hostage situation assuming perps had some type of demand; were semi reasonable people
6. Blame police 2: they showed up and scared Steve.
7. Blame the fire Dept – they should have been ready for a fire… Maybe Steve shoud have called first. Few of these situations result in infirnos, Wacco being an exception, BUT it was the government who (IMO) that set that off.

I lived in Cheshire in the ’50s and ’60s. Benedict Komisarjevsky did not exhibit in high school the religious extremism in which he apparently raised Joshua, so Benedict must have contracted that mental illness later. It is obvious that he and his wife Jude were emotionally unequipped for parenthood, owing to their hyperreligiosity, which is nothing other than a severe form of mental illness. I prefer to think that most people, who as children endure physical and/or sexual abuse and religious extremism, may be inclined to drug addiction and theft to finance that addiction, but not to rape and murder. Because the judiciary, as a human institution, is by nature fallible, I am in principle opposed to the death penalty, but the Petit murders case is one which cries out for its application. Also, life sentences to prison without the possibility of parole would be in order not only for Benedict and Jude, but also for all in the Connecticut penal system who let Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes loose to commit these horrendous crimes. All those two need is to be put down like the rabid animals that they are. Connecticut needs to abolish parole.
