What should happen with 16-year-old Walter Smith Jr.?
What can we, as a society, do with people like this, individuals who throw what can only be described as a temper tantrum that harms or kills other people?
So how did Walter Smith Jr. manage his anger?
Well, on the morning of the third of September, 2007, Walter Smith grabbed a sledgehammer and went after the girl pictured here to the left – Betsy Mary Smith, his 22-year-old sister.
Walter Smith Jr. whacked her a few times, then grabbed a knife and stabbed her.
Then he ripped her clothes off and raped her.
When his niece, two-year-old Andrea Costello, started crying, Walter Smith Jr. hit her with the sledgehammer. On the head.
Then Walter dragged his dying sister, along with little Andrea and a 1-year-old boy into a back room, which was then padlocked.
Betsy Mary Smith died in that room from the injuries her brother inflicted upon her.
Later that afternoon, the children, still locked in the room, finally had their cries heard by Mary Smith, the mother of both Betsy and Walter.
Mary noticed that Andrea’s face was “messed up,” and took her to the hospital.
When she was asked what had happened to her, Andrea’s story was that she had fallen down and hit her face on a fuse box.
After examining her fractured skull and broken nose, doctors at the hospital saw the possibility that the 2-year-old had been abused and notified the police.
A detective drove over to the Smith residence that night and found Betsy Smith’s body still on the floor of the padlocked room.
Walter Smith Jr. was around at the time, and brought in for questioning.
He folded and admitted everything.
Mary Smith, the matriarch of this loving family, insists that her son couldn’t possibly have done this.
According to Mary Smith, Walter Smith Jr. is on depression medication that probably caused a blackout of some kind. “He don’t remember nothing he did. He was out of it or something like that. It was an accident. He don’t remember that stuff.”
Walter Smith Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder and rape. He also has a charge of aggravated assault to answer for, due to his sledgehammering of Andrea Costello. He will probably be tried as an adult.

This monster deserves hell.
But so does the mother who raised him and continues to defend his behavior, even though he victimized her daughter and grandchildren.
What gets into a boy’s mind and makes the desire to rape his own sister? All of his crimes are horrible, but the thought of raping your own sister … I’ll never understand that.
A parent will love their child through anything and everything. I know I do and I will, BUT that is not the same as having a blanket reaction that your child can do no wrong. Sounds like the mother is the one under the influence of mild altering meds.
My parents have the same thing only it’s a blanket reaction that everything I do is wrong(insert bitter laughter here)

I would imagine, though, that whatever his hell on earth might be, it wouldn’t compare with knowing that you’re dying, that you’re bleeding to death because your brother stabbed you… and then raped you. And having those be the last thoughts you have before you die.
Killing your sister is sick. Getting your dick hard enough to rape her while she’s bleeding to death?
He just needs to be dead already, and stop using up all the air non hell-bound people need. I have no vindictive need to see him get ass-raped in prison. That would mean he was still enjoying the blessing of life.

How sick to rape/kill sis and bash niece. How stupid mom is to think anyone will believe she did not know this child had been attacked when the mother of the child lay murdered in the room she retrieved the child from.
What did she intend to do when she got home from the hospital?? What did she intend to do with her murdered daughter?? Did she really think she could cover for this POS forever? She must be as bad as he is if she even REALLY WANTED to save his butt.
I pray for the well being of the 2 little children.
Very sad to read about someones life being taken away and a Toddler having to go through such torture. I’ve been a victim of Child Abuse, an Extreme Crack addict and an aloholic. But am Thirty two now. Totally clean. Still enjoy a single malt or a cognac every now and then. Married, looking forward to a Baby And in a kick ass job. It’s Just prayer and JC that turned me right. You gotta make the choice, Family and love or the other side. I believe that all of us have a dark side but Family, Religion, Friends And the simple beauty that life offers suppresses that side. I can’t feel hate towards the kid. Just a very deep sadness for the corruption and un learning of a soul. May Eternal rst be granted to Betsy MAry Smith

He has schizophrenia I would say, I don’t know him personally, but I had a friend that went to his high school and they said that he had bizarre behavior and just was a strange kid, (he told the police that the voices in his head told him to kill his sister, and there were also infant cadavers found on the property), and was a target of bullying. I’m not saying what he did was by any means justifiable, he is going to jail for a long time, which is good in my opinion, or an alternative to a mental institution. Most schizophrenics don’t murder people, so I think this sentence serves him well.
I find this story very strange, I mean, this house should have been condemned years ago. It has no windows, and they burn wood in the winter for warmth, there are no utilities for this home either, it has been under the watch of social service for many generations now also. I’m from Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area, and I have seen this house, it looks like an abandoned shack to me, and it also looks like there may be a meth operation going on. But back to the story itself, I find it very strange that the mother noticed Betsy was missing for quite some time, and that there was a padlock on the door, her story is just very strange, and I think it is pretty hard to notice her own daughter going missing for a long time.
I don’t know, it is all very strange, but Walter Smith Jr got what he deserved.

I remember when this case happened. I had a hard time trying to understand how his mother was trying to defend him after what he had done. I know it’s her son and all, but damn!
She was defending her choice not to swallow.
I’m surprised the sledgehammer to the kid’s head didn’t kill it. Then again, I’m not an expert on sledgehammer head trauma. Hell for him.
Wow! Unbelievable. That poor girl. But, thank god that baby survived somehow. Off to hell he goes!

Careful with reading this blog at night. I’m serious. There are some hideous, unimaginable stories in here that will give you nightmares for weeks and make you want to constantly check on your loved ones, especially if you have children.
