Ah, the joys of young love.
21-year-old Rachel C. Anderson and the love of her life, 21-year-old Mitch D. Laputka met in Utah. They found that they had a lot in common. They both liked to drink, they both liked to have sex, and they loved to go out and party.
After Rachel Anderson found herself pregnant, the parties ended for a little while and the happy couple decided to move back to Glendale, Wisconsin to be closer to Rachel’s family.
They both got a job at Glendale’s local Pizza Hut franchise.
Rachel Anderson gave birth to a boy in July of 2006. They named him Gabriel.
Life was good.
For them.
For Rachel Anderson’s son, Gabriel, life wasn’t so hot.
Apparently, Rachel Anderson’s maternal instinct never kicked in and she found that having a baby around seriously cut into her and Mitch’s party time.
Most of the money that they earned from their jobs at Pizza Hut ended up going into the “party fund,” which was used to buy alcohol.
Food for Gabriel wasn’t as high on their list of priorities.
When he went for his 6-month checkup in January, Gabriel was at the 30th percentile on the weight chart for babies his age – not too bad, but on the small side.
On the 12th of September, Gabriel Anderson was at the first percentile on the weight chart.
That was the day that the little 14-month-old guy was taken to the hospital by paramedics, who found the tyke in Rachel Anderson’s garbage-strewn apartment.
Paramedics described the apartment as “filthy” with trash scattered everywhere and dirty diapers and clothes thrown all over. According to the paramedics, they couldn’t set foot in the apartment without stepping on something.

Gabriel Anderson had been left alone overnight, strapped into a stroller in a room with open windows and an outside overnight temperature hitting the low 40′s.
Think about that for a second, folks. A 14-month-old baby, strapped to a stroller, sitting in a dirty diaper, and crying all night, wondering when “mommy” and “daddy” are going to come rescue him and hold him and make him warm and possibly feed him.
And where were “mommy” and “daddy” while their child was slowly dying?
Mitch Laputka and Rachel Anderson were out partying, drinking and having a good time.
When the paramedics arrived and initiated medical assistance, they found Gabriel’s temperature was an incredibly low 84 degrees – 12 degrees below normal. The little boy was unresponsive and not breathing. He was covered with severe rashes.
Through the efforts of well-trained medical personnel, Gabriel came back to the land of the living after 21 minutes of CPR.
Mitch Laputka and Rachel Anderson were arrested and charged with first-degree reckless injury and child neglect.
Their interviews with police were interesting.
Mitch Laputka announced that he “didn’t do diapers” because it was Rachel’s job.
I don’t do the changing and Rachel’s one of those persons who will blow their nose and throw the tissue on the ground.
Rachel Anderson told authorities that she really didn’t like to change Gabriel’s diapers and didn’t change diapers more than once a day, sometimes less. Considering the pair fed the child what little leftover pizza, carrots and other food was left over from that day at work, I’m surprised he was able to poop more than once a week.
According to Rachel Anderson, strapping her baby to a stroller and leaving him there while she and Mitch were at work, or putting Gabriel in a playpen overnight while they went out to party wasn’t unusual. They did it all the time. Pizza Hut doesn’t allow kids behind the counter, and she didn’t think babies are much fun at parties.
We wanted to party, have a good time, go out and do things we wanted to do.
Rachel Anderson and Mitch Laputka each face a possible sentence of 25 years and nine months in prison.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey A. Wagner sentenced 21-year-old Rachel Anderson to prison for three years and 21-year-old Mitch Laputka to prison for five years.
After calling the situation horrific three times and lambasting the couple for jeopardizing the little boy’s life in a Glendale apartment where dirty diapers and garbage were piled in mounds, Judge Wagner stated:
You just kind of pushed this little guy aside, to that child’s detriment, who didn’t have a chance to fight back.

The good news is that these two will not always be young, and one day they won’t be able to care for themselves. Gabriel, thankfully to the efforts of the paramedics, will have the chance to go and have fun while his parents suffer what he went through. I do hope that they end up in a really low rent nursing home. These two don’t deserve that little boy.

I cried for this child when I read this story. I can’t imagine how scared he must’ve been. I would love it if these two could be sent to my house for a week. It may sound barbaric but I am in favor of torturing creatures like this. I’m not sure how to even clasify them. Even animals care for and feed their young. I know that God will deal with them on judgement day, but I sure would delight in dealing with them until then. I hope everyone who reads this will say a prayer for Gabriel. Let us also hope that prison will not be kind to the two people who brought this poor child into the world.

They failed to understand that once you have a child your wants and desires are no longer the primary concerns, at least not for the next eighteen years.
it never occurred to Mitch when he threatened to kill his FIRST unborn child, just because he was told his FIRST wife didn’t want to go party. It’s apparent he NEVER grew up and I for one am ecstatic that he is getting what he deserves.
I just don’t get it.
Why can’t these unfit parents just get an abortion/put their child up for adoption?
1. Immediate sterilization of both of this child’s genetic donors.
2. Skip the foster care quicksand and put the child up for adoption immediately, with no contact between them until the child is adult enough to tell them how much they are hated.
I would imagine being stuck in a cell 24/7 might give them an idea of how it feels to be in a playpen all night. Too bad they can’t be srapped into a straitjacket and allowed to wallow in their own excrement for days….
The icing on the cake is that they were obviously such losers that it never occured to them that neglecting/abusing their child so that they could party would result in them being in a place where I heard there aren’t many parties. Yay for irony!
I knew both Rachel and Mitch when they started to date. I knew they would be nothing but trouble. Its been 2 years when I last talked to them. Today I look him up and this is the first thing to come up. I am out raged!!! I knew Mitch was LOW not this low. I give my prays out this strong and brave little boy Gabriel. Rachel is my cousin and you’ve got your facts wrong. What she did was horrible and I am going to tell you that if Mitch wanted to do something He made Rachel do it too. You’re also forgetting the fact that Mitch only came to Wisconsin because there was a warrent out for his arrest in Utah. Rachel is very influential and Mitch was very persuasive. I think you should also know that Rachel had some serious mental problems that she was suppose to be taking medication for. Mitch thought the medication was dumb so she stopped taking it which led to more problems. And just for the record, that scumbag Mitch tried to pin that whole thing on her and she is not that disgusting of a person, he is. Just remember there are two sides to every story. I agree. Mitch only moved because of warrents in Utah, I’m his ex wife and mother of his FIRST child and I know what kind of person he is. She is lucky he never threatened to kill her and the baby the way he did me and my son. He is very persuasive and abusive.

Hey its me again. I just wanted to reassure everyone that rachel is back on her meds and after realizing what she had done and crying for a long time she gave up parental rights. her parents are now raising him in a comfy, warm, respectable, Christian home. One day when Rachel gets out of prison Gabriel will be able to make the choice of whether he will forgive his mom for his nightmares.

The best cure for her tears is another peice of pizza. She is nothing but a fat fuck who will scoff her own food down but fail to feed her child. She is a dirty, filthy pig and she deserves a hell of a lot more than the pathetic three years she got. Only by the grace of God and the skills of the paramedics on the scene that night, is that child alive. If he had died, she’d have been up on a murder charge. Stupid, pathetic, waste of life.

LOL…I find im getting into more and more debates ( arguments really) about child abuse issues. The way some bleeding heart assholes think that the answer to the problem is love, forgiveness and therapy for the POS, paid for by tax payers makes me sick.
My colleuges are seeing a different side of me…i tell them outright that i think their ideas are crap and that child abusers should just be fucking shot.

I also wanted to tell you this: Mitch wrote Rachel a letter saying he was glad she was ditching the kid so that when they got out they could go back to Utah for some more drugs. It was then that Rachel realized exactly what kind of person Mitch was and she ditched him for good. As for Gabriel, he is the happiest little boy ever and enjoys spending his time eating and running around like a maniac.
I hope this stupid bitch NEVER gets out. She doesn’t deserve to be walking around a free HO. It’s a little late to be realizing what kind of person Mitch is. Actually, she isn’t any better than he is, in my opinion. I’m glad that little boy is happy. He deserves it after what these to losers did to him. These type of people make me sick! There are so many woman out there who would love to have children and are not able to. Or people like myself who have been lucky enough to have children, and want more but can’t have any due to health reasons. They are so many people that would have raised that baby and loved him like he was their own. Ewe! It just really bothers me! I don’t understand how people could be like like that to another human being. Let alone a child they felt growing inside of them and they gave birth to. Becoming a parent is a privilege, not a right. Not something that if it happens then oh well, it happens. I believe there is a special place in HELL for people like them! Baby’s belong to God, he just lets us borrow them for a while. I love my boys, they all teens now, but I can’t image anyone hurting them. They are my reason for living. This makes me want to go to Wisconsin and give them both a piece of my mind! I am Mitch Laputka’s first wife and mother to his FIRST child. He has NEVER paid child support, is very abusive, and ONLY cared about patying and drinking when we were married, that’s why I left him before giving birth. I hope he rots in prison because I will do what I can to make sure he rots here for the $50,000 in warrents in Utah that sits over his head currently.

Just so you know… Mitch was my neighbor for about 10 years or so…. he had alot of animals and was very caring of them. So to hear that he has done this to his child kind of suprises me. How sad though. And no I am not sticking up for him or saying this was “random”. He had his share of trouble. But he is getting what he deserves.

Mitch was my friend in Utah in elementary school and he had a lot of problems there with a rough upbringing, but none of them were this bad. We lost touch after middle school and I was sickened to hear about this. I hope that Gabriel is in a loving home and Mitch and Rachel get what they deserve! There is absolutely no excuse for this neglectful behavior and even though he is my friend, that behavior I cannot except from anyone!! I hope that Mitch and Rachel get the help they need and the jail time will help them realize the pain they put that innocent child through.

I can tell you this, he comes back to Utah, I will be meeting him with a very large child support debt that needs to be paid. The last website I found, and a news clip I found said that because of unsolved warrants in Utah, he was getting 25 years. All I can say now, is good riddens.

At this point in time my comments may not be relevant any longer, but I feel compelled to comment. Mental illness is devastating, it can control everything you do and do not do..
Rachel was a wonderful, loving, caring, and gentle child. As she entered her teens years she began to change and her parents did everything they could to get her help, no avenue went unexplored, no cost was too much for the help she needed. Nothing worked and drugs took over her life. Mental illness and drugs are a deadly combination.
Gina’s statement about another cannot make you neglect your child is erronous. When you fall in with another person who also has a mental illness and is abusive, controlling, and unpredictably violent….you can be “made” to do things that you would never have considered before. When Rachel returned to Milwaukee she was pregnant and without Mitch, we got her help with prenatal care and settled. She did very well during her pregnancy and was drug free….Until Mitch showed up just shortly before Gabriel was born. Even following Gabe’s birth she did ok…Things of course deteriorated and both Mitch and Rachel went to great extremes to hide what was happening and what they were doing from all of us.
Gabriel is alive and all of us including Rachel thanks God for that daily. Rachel stood before the judge at her sentencing and took responsibility for her actions (unlike Mitch who blames her), Rachel told the judge that she had no explantion for actions, as she had a loving family that had been nothing but supportive. This in no way condones her actions or absolves her of the consequences. Getting clean and separating herself from codependency with Mitch was he hardest thing she ever faced, with the exception of living with what she did to her son.
It is easy to judge when you have not walked a mile in another’s shoes. It is also archiaic to think that being a woman automatically means that you have maternal feelings.
I wish that Rachel had the courage and strength that Mitchs’ first wife displayed and walked away from Mitch and that lifestyle. Gabriel has been adopted by loving people, he is a happy little guy who loves to run and play. Interestingly he is also very gentle and kind with other children younger and smaller than himself. He is also now in the 90th percentile for height and weight.

If what you say is true, it’s good to think there may be hope for Rachel Anderson. What she did was unconscionable, and I don’t think mental illness can account for all of it since she seems to have been at least marginally functional. I know that not every woman has maternal feelings, and that even many wonderful, devoted mothers didn’t experience an instant bond with their newborns. But maternal feelings have nothing to do with it. I’m not a mother and I don’t want to be, and on my worst day I wouldn’t treat my worst enemy’s pathologically bratty toddler the way Gabriel was treated – because I have a *conscience*. This was selfishness, not “lack of maternal instinct.” If there is a conscience somewhere in Rachel, if she can bring that to the surface and learn from this and start standing up to people like Mitch even if that goes against the grain for her, if she learns to stay on her meds and off drugs, if she feels true remorse and chooses to take a different direction in life because of it, good for her, and I wish her all the best. True stories of redemption are rare around here, though, and I don’t know that any of us will be holding our breath.
P.S. A good way for Rachel to accept responsibility for her actions would be to agree to voluntary sterilization to make SURE this can never happen again.
