  • Jeanne Peterson and Beul Peterson

Jeanne PetersonOn the 20th of October, 2007 in Augusta, Georgia, after a 911 emergency call, responding police found 30-year-old Christine Baxter’s body lying on the front yard of her sister’s house and the Petersons - a couple who initially refused to allow police into their home.

As investigators arrived at the scene and were able to examine things more closely, a grim picture presented itself.

Christine Baxter, who was mentally ill, deaf, blind and unable to feed herself without assistance, had starved to death in her sister’s home.

Once dead, one of the Petersons pulled Christine’s body out of the house, a house that had been completely taken over by cockroaches, was covered in cobwebs and buried in piles of rotting garbage. Her body had been placed on the front lawn and left for a while, exposed to the elements and anyone who happened to pass by.

When Christine’s body was finally weighed, it tipped the scales at just 46 pounds.

Jeanne Peterson, Christine’s sister and Beul Peterson, Christine’s brother-in-law, were arrested and charged with manslaughter by a grand jury.

Beul PetersonThe pair was receiving checks from the state to care for Christine, which they most certainly did not do.

Sergeant Richard Roundtree, a spokesman for the local Sheriff’s office, had this to say about what they saw at the Peterson residence:

Once we entered the residence, we saw what tragic, horrible conditions that the subject had spent the remainder of her life. This is one of the worst scenes, of living arrangements, that we have run across.

The house itself was a horror. Feces from at least four different species - pig, dog, cat and human - covered everything.

Cockroaches were so abundant and roamed so freely that the walls appeared to be moving in the dim light.

Rotting food and other trash was scattered about in piles on the floor.

Declared as an “extremely hazardous residence,” the house has been condemned and will be burned down.

I cannot believe the way people treat the helpless. And this was her own sister. And why in this world would they, themselves live in such conditions?
