21-year-old Unique Kiana Bishop, who undoubtedly was at the top of her class in high school, spent 14 days in jail and was placed on probation by the Norwalk branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court after being convicted for burglary in the summer of 2007.
Now while you may be saying, “14 days in jail for burglary?!” let’s all be realistic and face the fact that we’re dealing with a female offender here. We’re lucky the state didn’t give her a brand new car.
The 26th of July wasn’t the first time Unique Kiana Bishop had been arrested for burglary. In the last two years, if you count the latest charge, she has been convicted twice of burglary and once of petty theft.
So Unique Kiana Bishop is pretty much scum.
And, as scum, she hangs out with other scum.
At about 2:30 in the afternoon of the 5th of November, 2007, Unique Bishop went with some friends to a “meet and greet” at the parking lot of a local discount store – BigLots. One of Unique’s friends had a slight disagreement with another young lady as to who exactly should be a local fine young gentleman’s “baby’s momma,” and they were going to talk about it like sensible young ladies should.
As can be expected, seconds after the two future Nobel Prize winners began to talk, a fight broke out. Friends who came along jumped in, and then their friends jumped in, so there were about 30 women fighting on the streets of Los Angeles.
The fight moved from the parking lot of the BigLots to the street, then across the street into the parking lot of a Union 76 gas station.
That was when Unique Bishop decided to make her own unique (oh, we’re clever aren’t we?) contribution to the conflict. Unique stepped into her red convertible and drove it into some of her opponents, while screaming “I’ll get you.”
One of those opponents was 22-year-old Shontae Treniece Blanche, who was five months pregnant. Shontae was a Cal-State Northridge student who worked at a local bank and was was 13 classes away from finishing her education and becoming a parole officer. Considering her husband is in prison, she might have had a hard time getting a job in that field, but then again – this is Southern California we’re talking about, and they’ll hire anybody.
Unique Bishop managed to slam into one woman, trap another girl against a parked car and run over Shontae Blanche. The first girl was bruised but unharmed, the second girl almost lost her leg, and Shontae…
Well, Shontae and her baby died as Unique Kiana Bishop’s car drove over Shontae, trapping the pregnant woman under the vehicle. Unique then backed her car up off Shontae’s body, crushing the woman and her baby again before speeding away.
Unique Bishop disappeared, but appeared at a local police station with her mother when she learned that she was wanted. During an interview with police, she claimed that she had hit the other women on accident and was just trying to get away.
That makes sense, because usually when I’m trying to get away from something like a bear or tiger, I can also be heard screaming “I’ll get you.”
Unique Bishop has been slapped with two murder charges that have been filed with “special circumstance allegations.” This means Unique Bishop could possibly be facing the death penalty.
Uh-oh.
It’s really too bad that Unique Bishop couldn’t have been unique in finding, oh, say the cure for cancer, or doing something else equally unique that builds society up instead of tearing it down.
In a heroic attempt at damage control, Noreen McClendon, executive director of Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles, had this to say:

Unique Kiana Bishop seems to be doing just fine in prison, calling her mother regularly. Unique has pled “not guilty,” of course, and we’re still waiting for her trial.

Guess her special circumstances are pretty ‘unique’ eh? Seriously though, that’s too bad. Not for the charged, but for the lady and her baby. Really makes you wonder at the mindset of people who make decisions like that doesn’t it? I mean sure, every normal person (myself included) has contemplated killing someone when angry, but what is it that makes someone actually do it? Irrationality?

I have been in foster care. I have been abandoned, then adopted, then abandoned. I have been in abusive homes. I started working fulltime at age 14, while I attended school. I held down 3 jobs while I paid for college. I have never been on the streets even though I was on my own after 17. I could have ended up on ceack or meth like so many people in the Valley have, but I don’t hang around with drug users or pimps. Instead of being bitter or violent against other people, even though my childhood could excuse that, I’m not. I’ve never been in a physical fight with anyone, because I have always wanted better for myself and my future children.
Instead of making lameass comments about this murder, you should take this as a wake-up call to get out of your loser lifestyle.
Either you or one of your drug-addled friends has made several comments about how it was meant to be for that girl to die, because otherwise she would not have been there. This is the ONLY thing we agree on. However, I think she was there for a reason, and I think those things happened as a wake-up call to all your homies to stop being so stupid. Somebody among you is able to understand that this horrible murder happened for a reason. And that reason is not payback, it’s about changing your life. You can either learn from this horrible event, or you can end even a bigger whore/gangsta/drug user than you were before.
I’d like to think that somebody will learn from this and junk the destructive lifestyle. That these things happened to help them decide to junk their teenage criminal lives and make something of themselves that their future children would be proud of. It’s up to you. I feel I was sent to these boards to specifically help other people get out of situations that will hurt their children or future children.
I came from a very abusive background, yet I’ve managed to not be abusive with my children. It is possible.
I do not know how this website works in general, but if you or your friends ever want advice or help in getting out of the destructive lifestyles you’re in, let me know here.

I have a suggestion for you though. I’ve been trying to follow your logic here, because I don’t see why you think were racist because we thing a person who happened to be black used her car as a weapon and indiscriminately drove it into a crowd of people, killing a pregnant woman, is a piece of shit.
For instance, You hint that we would feel differently if Unique Bishop was white – how can you possibly believe that when you can read about dozens of examples of white people committing heinous crimes right here on this website and see that our reactions to them are just as full of anger and rage. An attorney is first and foremost an interpreter, but his second task is as a word smith, using words to say exactly what he must to clearly, concisely and correctly answer the law’s requirement in a case. To interpret the law and effectively argue his/her case. It’s one of the reasons that Pre-Law isn’t the preferred bachelor’s degree for a Law program. They prefer English Majors and Engineers, people who have mastered communication first, and can effectively do that communication either generally or in the mastery of another discipline.
This is fairly simple. You must be related to or a friend of the guilty party here. You come online, come to a site you know nothing about and then fail to divine the site’s purpose before you start spouting off. You use tricks that you think can con your way into respect, but you are so outclassed not because your skin is black, but because you’ve never bothered to apply yourself beyond the most basic of an education nor invest in yourself the most common of reasonable investigation. Get your GED and during that process they’ll teach you the difference between “You’re” and “Your.” Then apply yourself to a college program that suits your strengths. If you have the chance, try an English program that specializes in Linguistics. It will give you the skills necessary to tear into words and their basis. Make sure to pick up a few logic courses to ground down the edges of your illogical spirit and fill in a few classes here and there on history, ethics and a few statistics courses so you can honestly evaluate the world on something more than your gut feelings. If you are black and male, my tax dollars actually go towards helping you do what you need to do here. You can literally get all the way through Law School at Yale with barely a fuss if you apply yourself and choose to be a better man. You have to take the first few steps, and if being angry at Max, myself and Vcbecky wakes you up enough to stop lying about who you are and start dreaming about how you can be that man, then we’ve invested out talents wisely.
If you aren’t a Yale Law graduate in 10 years or less, you’re a damn fool for failing so miserably to jump at the chance to not only claim you’ll be something, but to actually be it.

Maybe one of these lovely ladies can explain to me why my a-parents’ best friends for over 40 years are ‘Black’? Black being what they’ve always called themselves. Oh, the Mr. is an obstetrics doctor, and his wife has a very successful jewelry business. The dad delivered all three of my sister’s children. All of their children went to college and have become very successful.. way so more than me. The mom suffered a horrible thing where she was driving with her Grandson (who was born due to medical intervention, as the couple could not have children without surgery) and hit a telephone pole about a block from her and my a-parents house. The reason? A bee got in her car and she was freaking out trying to get it out… then she hit the pole and her grandson was killed.

I get what you’re saying about gangs, but all you’d have to do to modify this is to stress the invention of the Black Gang, arguably a new and dangerous addition to the landscape. It was in response to both the KKK and the prison system of Jim Crow, but it was composed of convicted felons, and arguably has been a shield for significant counter-culture, violence.
Just don’t try to blame it all on race. That opens your argument to a difficult logical fallacy. It’s the white “race” that started gangs, whether they called them organizations for fighting Napoleon or for protecting the Southern way of life. The Clubs that turned into the Bloods and other gangs are still called organizations.

I am sure they would love to hear how their hard work and dedication means nothing because Whitey only “let” them have their “token” responsibilities. That goes against your theories that Whites have all the power – because if we DID, and had all of this built up hate and racism, we wouldn’t “let” any Blacks in higher office to begin with. The ability to look at myself and want to better my life and the life of my future children is a great gift. I was raised in the ‘hood. I can form a thought and convey those thoughts on paper. My parents were heroin addicts. I dropped out of High School at age 15. I moved out of my home at 16. I was not given the opportunities that I would have had if I had been that “token” minority. I could have had college paid for if I had been. I am not bitter about this, these were my circumstances, and I dealt with them accordingly.

Rachel, I would never use slavery as a reason for anything other than acknowledging it’s impacts. You cannot dispute the fact that American slavery has had a greater effect on our community because of it’s place in time, whereas the time of the invading Moors was something that is much too long ago for us to dispute, and plus it has no bearing on the point I was making. My “useless information” of how I had a hard life illustrates the point that I am able to read, write and spell. No matter how you look at it, there is no excuse to be illiterate in America today, not 50 years ago. That’s all I am saying.
Rachel, there is actually a solid reason for illiteracy in America. Poor education. I don’t know how many public school systems you have been through, but here in Michigan Detroit Public Schools have I believe the lowest of the low scores in the country. The teachers don’t care, so they don’t teach. No one wants to admit that fact, so they continue to pass the students. Often times the children in the schools have uneducated parents who don’t care about their kids education, and the cycle continues. Hell, I didn’t even go to DPS in high school and there was a guy in my class who averaged 25-20 points a game, so he graduated on time with the rest of us. Homeboy could not read a lick. It was truly sad. But when your parents think you’re doing okay (or at least well enough to pass), and your teachers don’t give a rats ass, you end up being another statistic.
So my point is, a lot of public schools suck. And when the schools suck, the parents that actually give a damn about their children pull out and find better ones. The majority that remain have uneducated parents who don’t care that their children will never be able to function above a fourth grade level. Then there are those kids in these schools who will have undiagnosed learning disabilities, find school too hard and either stop trying or just stop going. Do the parents in that drop outs life stop this? No. Remember, they are uneducated as well. They just put the kid to work to supplement the household income. It’s a cycle of poor education and ignorance.
There are plenty of young people, both black, white and otherwise, who pick themselves up by the bootstraps as you have and carve their own way. That is always commendable, and you have my utmost respect. But I’m willing to bet that the education you received up until you left school was better than your typical “hood”. Case in point, were you able to take your school books home? Because in Detroit, many schools don’t allow the kids to take the books off of the premises, because “they don’t have the money” to get new ones if the kids loose them(which is a lie).
I blame the system for failing the children, just as much as I blame the parents. I do fault the kids themselves, but why should they care when no one else does? Oh, and this goes for uneducated kids of all races, because as has been said before, there are PLENTY of non-black teenagers who couldn’t put a sentence together if their life depended on it. However generally, if you look to where the poverty is, you will find uneducated fools. The two go hand in hand.

The child also has a responsibility for their own learning. Many children who have had crack-head guardians have fought their way to the top. Education is the responsibility of the parents and, to a lesser degree, the child. The state should provide the tools for the parents to provide an education for their children.
Don’t blame schools for their inability to teach when they don’t get the support from the parents. You can provide the best schools in the world, but if they’re in the heart of areas whose inhabitants are more interested in bling, looking like a badass, and scoring with as many chicks as they can, they’ll be about as much use as an underwater cement factory.
Why should children care when nobody else does? Maybe…just maybe…because it’s their future.

Take a look at some of the comments and writings on the myspace pages of the Felicia girl (17, murdered by her father’s brother and his friend, either of whom could be father of her baby) who was murdered and her baby abandoned. They look pretty white to me. And yet they can’t seem to be able to write a comprehendable sentence either. Everything is ho this and nigga that.

If we all had FAIR access, we would all be “educated” and we would all believe that “educated” means the same thing, n’est-ce, pas?
Learning can be done on many levels. I live in a community where the schools have some deficits. However, even if my son isn’t a straight A student he still has been given access to things that allow him to expand his mind. This includes books, tv, the internet and, yes, us: his parents. Grades are not the sole indicator of a child’s intelligence; just as formal schooling should not be the only education a child is allowed.
My 14 year old and I talk about everything from the political and socio-economic impacts of communism to the negative/positive impacts of christianity on art and literature as it pertains to societies all over the world. Big subjects, but a lot of fun debate and mental stimulation come from these discussions. I hold nothing back from him. I tell him, truthfully, about how I feel about issues and let him come to his own conclusions. He has been exposed to every culture, race, creed and sexual preference.
Moreover, I taught him that a sense of humor goes a long way. People need to get over being so serious about their beliefs because it leads to an inability to empathize with others ideas and beliefs.
We are not wealthy people, far from it. But libraries are free. Tv is free. Listening is free.
No one is free from prejudice, we all battle these feelings. The best way I have found is to take each person and base my feelings on them as a person. If they are a parasite to society, no matter what their skin color, creed, or sexual preference, then I don’t have to bother with them. My view is made up of how they choose to live, not how they were born.
With that said, it is just as true that racism lives in every “culture”. Stereotypes, unfortunately, are usually the result of a minority who has “adopted” behavior and pushed it onto others. It is up to all of us to behave in a way that will deter those looking to profit, in whatever way, from making these behaviors mainstream.

A lot of what has been called racism is people unable to look past their own belief system, being uncomfortable with unfamiliar ideologies, or simply “ugly” in their demeanor. Real racism is not that subtle: it is ugly, violent and vile.
The point is that this girl lost her life because others were not happy with theirs. This has been the reason for a lot of stupid and cruel events that have taken place all over the world. Until everyone stops worrying (and this applies to all races and creeds) about how much they have “endured” and start focusing on how much they can accomplish then this type of behavior will continue to breed.
A few final thoughts:
Having a grasp on the English language makes it easier to communicate. It is the reason why there are grammatical rules and standards. Every language in the world has a these rules so citizens can communicate effectively.
Also, working at “McDonald’s” isn’t humiliating. It is a job. In fact, many fast food restaurants pay well and allow for flexible hours for single parents and students. A job is a job. No job is beneath anyone when they are just trying to support their family. I quit my job as a court supervisor to stay home with my 2 year old and I work part time at a local restaurant as a break from home and a little extra money. I have a college education, but I am doing what is right for my family.
Fair access to education does not mean all people will learn at the same level; thus, educated does not mean the same to all. It means that we all have the opportunity to send our children to school to learn the basics. The rest is up to us.

Thank you. I have never tried to influence my children’s musical taste. I have diverse tastes, none of which happens to include hiphop/rap or pop. Their father is a diehard DeadHead. I have made it very clear that I am against violence, drugs, casual sex, calling people niggas/hoes, etc. I’m not keen on songs about killing cops or bragging about how much money you make or how cool you are. Once the boys realized that a lot of the Greatful Dead music is about drugs, they cooled off on that. The music is good, the message is iffy. They actually are leaning more towards the grunge metal, post-punk, and straight-edge. They have chosen music that neither their dad or I listen to. (Well, I’m having to listen to it now!) I’m glad they are able to choose for themselves, and that they have not chosen the prepackaged, shallow crap that so many buy into.
Trying to pretend that the whole world revolves around hiphop, or that it’s some genius world-changing phenomenom is not well thought out. Is it marketable? Yeah. Makes a lot of money? Yeah. Not everyone wants to listen to music with that framework. Some people like music without thinking of whether it makes you one of the cool sheep, or whether their clothing screams out to everyone how they listen to the ‘cool’ music.
Trying to ‘fit’ in by letting commercialism tell you what kind of music to listen to, which is cross-marketed into getting you to wear certain clothes, is ok. If you want your whole life to be about image and money, neither of which is a tangible commoditiy.
Not ‘needing’ to fit in? Priceless.
It was asked what relevance a band being vegetarian was. Pretty relevant to my kids, since they’re vegetarian. If they like a band and then find out they’re vegetarian, it’s icing on the cake. And it’s surprising how many bands are. Probably kind of like how if you like guns, drugs, whores and ‘bling’, you’re gonna like a band more if their into that and sing about that.

If he ever uses any slang, then I’m sure you can attribute the coining of those phrases to Hip-Hop culture. I know that slang has been around forever, but the international tides have turned. Never before in history has slang been constantly re-invented as in the era of Hip-Hop, and so widely used for example: Huge corporations using Hip-Hop culture to sell their products, in their commercials and in their ads.
Rock, alternative, and classical music are what the world would consider standards. Hip-Hop has just recently (1-2 generations ago) had the biggest explosion of any genre of music in history. Most of those other genres of music can be classified as Rock, they are just different styles of the same music.

Lots of people enjoy real music played by real musicians, who actually know how to play instruments. They can play their songs ‘unplugged’ or accoustically, because they actually know how to play instruments. I’d love to see someone try to play hiphop accoustically. It’s not possible, because for the most part hiphop isn’t really music in the classical sense.
Everyone does not like hiphop, and it has not changed what everyone thinks, wears, eats, etc. I’m glad that hiphop is your musical preference, but you highly overestimate its impact on the rest of the world.

I like real music played by real musicians. Mostly Country music. But I have a wide variety of tastes when it comes to music. I happen to LOVE Eminem and I think he’s a genius. So sue me. hahahah. That is the whole quote. Obviously, we are English speakers so that is the first example I used. I did not “forget” to add “in America”; I implied it.
Slang and dialects emerge in every culture, which is perfectly acceptable. However, how would one write, say a legal document or any kind of public statement without a standardized set of grammatical rules. It would be chaotic if language was only constituted of slang and cultural lexicon. Languages have rules to allow all citizens the most direct way to interact with each other. Not bothering to learn these rules implies that one is not interested in communicating with anyone else in their community other than those with whom they are comfortable. Again, creating a schism between groups. That is why having a basic grasp of your native tongue is so important.
Yes, my son uses slang. Slang is a general term, not specific to any cultural or lifestyle, and all speakers use some terms that could be put in that category.
By the way, corporations have been using youth oriented slang and fads to motivate sales since the dawn of capitalism. It is one case where I am not sure whether imitation is flattery or ridicule. Nothing can kill a cultural revolution like packaging it for sale.
As far as music. Hip-hop has been around since the ’80′s. Rock-n-Roll was not coined until the 1950′s. Punk emerged in the late 1960′s and 70′s. Post-punk era brought industrial, mod, and new wave. None of these fit into “Rock” music due to their use of synth, as well as “real”, instruments. The point: what you call standards, other than classical, have not actually been in the public vocabulary for that many generations.
Hip-hop and rap artists have influenced music. But, every genre has had some impact; otherwise, it would not be a genre.
Music, movies, television, and all media outlets will have you believe that culture is one big brain and they are giving us what we need and want. The truth is that what affects one group may not even scathe another. But certain things unite all of us. We love our children, we eat, sleep, and need to be loved. That is why stories like this are a hard pill to swallow. These girls were young and had the world ahead of them. Now one will never see the future and one will have her future scarred. Education can do a lot, even if informal, to keep kids from feeling isolated. Exposing our kids to all the world has to offer can give them the self-confidence to walk away from petty arguments and drama. Teaching kids to “walk away” may keep more of them alive.

This is true. Everyone was hurt by these events. The people who were using broken English to communicate on this site are who I was defending against people like GloryBug who chose to carry on a petty conversations with them exploiting their ignorance like so many others have done. That is why I used this platform to express myself. I do what I can for my community, and for people who can’t defend themselves agains the bigots of the world who haven’t faced who THEY are.

I’m going to ignore the fact that you called this site sick, and I’m just going to mention quickly that our poll is a symbolic representation of people’s anger, pain and helplessness concerning the crime their voting on. We don’t believe in any way that we’re sending anyone to Biblical Hell.
I read what happened, and it sounds to me like Unique Bishop lost the fight with her romantic rival, so she jumped in her car and drove it into the crowd that was there both watching and actively participating in the fight. Unique Bishop didn’t know Shontae Blanche, she was just trying to hurt some people to make herself feel better.
And don’t make it sound like Unique Bishop was an innocent girl who made a little mistake, she was already on probation for a burglary conviction when she killed Shontae and her unborn baby.
What started out as a bunch of young, immature women acting stupidly ended up as a tragedy because of one person – Unique Bishop. To try to place any part of the blame on the victim is disgraceful, and offensive to me personally. Take a good look at yourself shhhhhhhhh, and try and find the flaw in you that let you to come to such a terrible decision, before you end up right where Unique Bishop is.

You’re a family member, so I understand your need to defend them. But Unique is not a “nice person”. “Nice people” by definition don’t: a) commit burglary, b) almost sever another person’s leg or c) kill people by running over them with a car. “Nice people” ‘fess up when they’ve done something wrong and don’t flee the scene screaming, “I’ll get you.” Other than saying she’s “nice”, the only other thing you have to say in her defense is that she can serve as a bad example. Nah, I’m pretty far left of central, but I have two guiding principles in life–the US Constitution (the paper one, not the ship, NC) and taking responsibility for the shit you do in life. I spent 13 years as a Communications Officer (what normal people would call dispatcher) for our State Patrol, with 480+ hours of ride-along time with my troops. I’ve had my fill of, “It’s not my fault”, “My friends made me….”, “Somebody shoulda…..”, “Man, if you knew what my childhood was like….” and everyone’s favorite, “I only made one little mistake.”. Last time I heard that one, I was riding along and we responded to a one car/pickup fatality. Drunk driver had crossed the centerline, striking the pickup head-on. Pickup rolled as they are wont to do, killing the female passenger (it was hot, they didn’t have AC and her window was rolled down. She was seatbelted in, but was partially ejected due to the force of impact and her neck was broken when the truck rolled, basically over her head). The driver of the pickup took a steering wheel to the chest, so cracked and broken ribs, punctured lung and some lacerated internal organs, but he survived. Lucky him, she said ironically. The female passenger was his wife of about 2 months.
Submitted too quick. To make a long story short (too late), drunk driving the car had minor injuries (but of course!) and that was his comment when we saw him at the hospital and told him he was under arrest. The hospital did a blood draw and I don’t recall what his BA was. He was drunk enough though to think he was driving to the airport that he was staying a few minutes away from. Instead, he was about 20 miles from the airport, driving in exactly the wrong direction.
Most of it is common sense and taking responsibility. If people would have/do those things, there would be much rejoicing among the peasantry. ;)
