David Spears and Chris Collings
In the Disney movies, it’s always the evil stepmother.
This time it was the evil stepfather.
On the second of November, 2007, nine-year-old Rowan Ford’s mother, 44-year-old Colleen Spears, had been working the night shift at her job at Wal-Mart. While Colleen was working, Rowan’s stepfather, David Spears, was at home watching the girl.
This mom-works-nights and dad-works-days arrangement was entirely normal, and probably saved the family a good amount on childcare.
Another thing which saved the Spears family some money on childcare was Rowan Ford’s disappearance that night.
Nobody noticed that Rowan was missing until Colleen Spears got home that Saturday morning and noticed that Rowan hadn’t come to greet her.
A quick check of the house revealed – no Rowan.
When asked, David Spears told his wife that he didn’t know where Rowan could have gone, but that the girl might have woken him up in the middle of the night to tell him something about her heading over to a friend’s house to spend the night…
Hmmm.
The police were called and a manhunt initiated for Rowan. In the meantime, family members were interviewed and stories were checked.
David Spears’s story, especially.
After a few lengthy chats with the cops, David admitted that he had gone out drinking with some friends after Rowan Ford went to bed. He said that he had left the girl alone in the house from about 11 at night until midnight.
That checked out.
Further investigation, however, revealed that David Spears’s mother had come over at about one-thirty in the morning. She had come over to watch Rowan while David and his friend Chris Collings went out from then until seven in the morning.
David had taken his mother’s car and driven to…where?
There wasn’t really a satisfactory answer to that until police interrogated David’s friend, 32-year-old Chris Collings.
Chris turned out to be like one of those people you see on “Law and Order” – the ones who cave under pressure on the stand.
Mr. Collings, who lived in a camping trailer in a nearby county, admitted that the two had driven Rowan Ford to his trailer. Once there, they both raped the little girl and then strangled her to death with a cord.
Once she was dead, they put her body in a cave about 10 miles from the Spears’s house and hoped for the best.
Rowan Ford’s body was found in the cave on the ninth of November, 2007, the same day her stepfather and his friend were arrested.
According to the first officer at the scene, Rowan Ford’s body was nude from the waist down and there was dried blood in her vaginal region and down her legs. Her body had been dropped from the top of the cave entrance and had rolled down until it came to rest.
The next day, both David Spears and Chris Collings were charged with first-degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape.
David Spears’s brother, Greg Horton, has told the press that his brother isn’t the type that would be interested in kids sexually, that David had never looked at child porn or been accused of child abuse.
He is not that type of person. He is a little strange, but you know, who isn’t. Everyone has their own quirks. That is what makes us different.
Greg Horton has also claimed that his brother is too fat to have carried the body all the way to the cave where Rowan’s body was found. David Spears weighs approximately 380 pounds. Big guy.
As far as health-wise, there is no way that David could have hiked the kid up there and dumped the body. Just getting out of the car and walking up to our door, he would wheeze hard. I think he has some health problems and I think that it’s got a lot to do with his weight. He is not physically able.
Ah-ha! A “too fat to kill” defense.

Oh I sure am glad these two guys have already been convicted. I look forward to the day when we can eliminate the court system altogether and convict people as online “techno-mobs”.
I’d also like to see more of those cases where law enforcement officials who have the proper training, are able to prepare crime scenes for proper “framing”. I mean they seem to be capable of every other crime conceivable – but somehow; magically, they don’t seem to be capable of fabricating or planting evidence…or capable of lying.
Yeah I guess if I had 3 children of my own and a “By the book, Tough on Crime” Sherrif told me I’d go to prison for the rest of my life and I’d never get to be with my children again – I’d propably say whatever he suggests. That way I can testify against the other guy, my defense can wheel and deal with the local prosecutor (who shouldn’t be wheeling ‘n dealing with anyone to begin with) – and I can get out in less than 10 years.
Then the real criminal(s) – whoever they may be – can relocate, walk the streets in another town (possibly in a uniform), and do it again.
The whole incident just has an air of False-Masonry about it.

Anyways as to this story, that’s really one of the lowest of the low things in my book, child rape that is. Not to mention killing her afterwards and all that, but I mean damn… why? Can’t you just buy a hooker if you’re that desperate?
I am from the same town as Chris Collings. This guy has been in and out of trouble his whole life. He had sex with animals and also was molesting a step sister when he was younger. These families can say whatever they want to about “oh he would never have done that” blah blah blah. YES HE WOULD AND HE DID!!!!
By the way when you are checking out Chris and Davids myspace page also check out Colleens Rowans mother. Her daughter was missing on the 3rd they searched for her and finally called the cops at 6:30pm but if you will notice her last login was on Nov. 3rd?????? What the hell? My daughter is missing and I’m supposedly worried but I’m gonna log on my space?? Get real everyone is feeling sorry for this woman. Division of family services was called when this child was in Kindergarten and 1st grade. Nothing was done. Then mom goes out and finds a boyfriend and then husband which is 21 years younger than her. You probably have not heard also that Colleen had another daughter who is older and went to live with her Grandmother because her step father yes that’s right David Spears wouldn’t leave her alone. So I also hold this mother responsible. One of the gas stations in town where Chris Collings is from and the town little Rowan was murdered in. Had put “hang em high” on their sign out by the road. They were made to take it down due to this offended some people. It’s the “do-gooders” who have gotten us in the mess we’re in. I personally would approve of a public hanging certainly in this situation!!!!

What a sad looking little girl Rowan looks in her picture – if only she could have been saved like her older sister. How could Rowan’s mother neglect such a beautiful little girl and put her in harms way. I think along with these sick-o freaks the mother should also burn in hell….she did not ever deserve such a beautiful child…I hope one day sanity will return to our world and all these sick ******s will get their just desserts at the hands of their peers (us), not some mythical hell.

Update-For those of you following this case, these guys are facing arraignment in Barry County tomorrow Tuesday Nov 13th.
again i must ask, is it at all possible that these freaks get the death penalty?
We are hopeful that they will get death penalty. Maybe by age 70 they can fry after they sit on death row! Everyone thinks they will be handled once they get to jail. We are hopeful of that as well.
Update-If you have been following this case you possibly have seen that David Spears and Chris Collings both had my space pages on the social web. I went out to look and noticed that on Chris Collings my space page Colleen Spears was listed on his friends list and she was the first one shown. I then went to her page by clicking on her picture under Chris’s friend list. Something I noticed when I got there surprised me a bit. This mother comes home the morning of Nov 3rd from working nights at Wal-mart to find that her little girl was not home. They searched all day around town for her. Something I find a bit strange is that they did not call the cops until 6:30pm. Remember the date the 3rd of November. I then noticed looking at her page that her last log in was Nov 3rd. Now as a mother who is frantic about her child would you have time to just casually get on your myspace page and browse around? I do not find the concern was there at all. You know the old saying “It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt” Then it’s oh shit!! Another sick point is that Chris Collings last log in was the 2nd of November the Friday that he was with David Spears then of course into the morning of the 3rd when Rowan was raped and killed as you all know. What you may not know is that on Nov 2nd when he last logged in his mood on my space showed “horny”…. What a sick sick man. David Spears mother Myrna was called by her son at 1:30am on the 3rd to borrow her car. Now if you were home with your child in a normal setting and you called your mother to come over at 1:30 in the morning, you would think the mother would be like what the hell? But she came over never checked on the child at all knowing obviously that her son was up to no good needing her car at 1:30 in the morning. This just leaves a trail of “white low rent trash” all over the place doesn’t it.
This is horrible. That poor little girl. Can you imagine her fear and pain? How could any child deserve to go through this? These freaks need to have their anus ripped to shreds while they’re in prison … so badly that they’ll have to learn how to crap all over again. Then … shank ‘em! Hell to both. I just want to go home and hug my girls. Rest in peace, little Rowan.

Our country seems to be not as harsh with punishment. The Do-Gooders are winnng the battle here in America. The ones against punishment are tying the hands behind the rest of our backs. Our system is broken and until it is fixed we will see more and more of these cases. If I was a child and saw someone’s penis cut off for rape, or a hand cut off for stealing, or hangings in the street I think the fear of that would make me think twice before I decided to rape a child or hmm shoot both my parents. Not to mention if each criminal or pediphile had one hand painted black don’t you think it would be much safer for the rest of us to protect our families and children? Just my opinion!
The whole bunch of them, David, Chris and Colleen are sick. For those of you who haven’t read the comments on Chris’ myspace page there is one from someone who said “hope you have a KILLER weekend”. I think he’s gotten away with lots of other things that have gone on undected. By the way, I’ve read the obit on the funeral home’s website and there is no mention of a real father….has anyone heard where he is?
I also noticed that if you look on Colleens (the mother) myspace that Chris is in front of David on the myspace friends list. HMMM The town of stella is very small I mean very small and spaced out by farmland, I am also from the area. Alot of people are poor Mom. bless her heart, but her oldest daughter had already moved out because of the step father, and JEN way to go on noticing it all, I myself am looking at all that. I would have called friends and found out where my daughter was, and the step gma what the heck 1 30 am?? I mean come on! And yes does anyone know the where abouts of her real father. And I can tell you that the FAT DAVID he drops the soap in the PEN and they will roll his fat ass all over the place and “POKE” fun at him for sure. The real father committed suicide and is not alive. We were hopeful that when she was missing that maybe a real father had abducted her or something at least with hopes that she was still alive, but then found out father was not alive.
I’m sorry more info here. The media is portraying that this was such a shock that David was a father who lived amongst their little town. We have talked to several people who have stated that people in that town wanted to burn them out (if you know what i mean) a long time ago. The house was disgusting and it has been said that David would bring dead cats and dogs into the house and skin them right there in the house in front of the children. This man is not right and I just want people to know that what you are getting from the media is not true, a lot of this town was not happy with this family living amongst them. Some insight into Chris and his family— Chris along with his 1/2 brother Greg Horton were taken into foster care by Betty and Poncho Collings when Chris was a little boy. They did not adopt Greg hence the fact he has different last name (Horton) however they did adopt Chris. Poncho and Betty were older at the time having already raised children of their own which were grown and had families of their own. Betty and Poncho divorced when Chris was younger. Chris was abusive to his mother and knocked her around quite a bit. Betty actually passed away just little over a week before Chris committed these crimes. I heard on Cracker Barrell which is a 1 hour radio show on KTTS in Springfield that is on Sunday mornings. The host of the show stated that neither one of these boys have had a past record. I do know that Poncho had to go down to Little Rock Ark and bail Chris out of jail. I do not know what for but once again media has it all wrong and there is more to the past of Chris Collings and David Spears that hopefully will all come out in court.
Yesterday in Barry County the boys did go before a judge and are now pleading not guilty.
In the little town of Ridgley which is just a few miles from Wheaton is where Betty Collings lived Chris’ mother. She lived off down a dirt road across from a Childrens camp. Just the week prior to the weekend that Chris and David killed Rowan the church camp had said that one night there was 2 guys that had broken into thier offices. They were not able to catch them but they chased them for a while. They were driving an old truck (which Chris Collings does drive) and they were parked down the lane of Betty Collings (which had just passed away a few days prior. They stated that one guy was very tall (Chris is like 6’4″) and that the other guy was short and fat. Everyone in Wheaton knows it was those boys. How ironic that Chris was using the lane of his dead mother to park his vehicle on while they walked across the road to commit the robbery. After all he took Rowans body to his dads property outside of Wheaton to rape and kill her. (Poncho his father had moved to the Senior Citizens complex in Wheaton leaving his home unoccuppied)
When asked… Poncho said “I’m not going down to the jail to see him” I know Poncho is sick about this he actually had Chris with him the week after Rowan was killed (not knowing of course that his son had done it) They had went to the bank, and also had went to eat at one of the little restaurants there in town. Poncho of course was saying I hope they find who did this. All the while Chris just looked straight forward with nothing to say!! I do have to say that none of the family members I know are defending him. The only one is the brother Greg Horton who is defending him. Greg must not be right in the head either after all they are blood related. As far as the adoptive family of Chris I think they have washed their hands of him!!
I feel bad for this poor sweet angel but sounds like all in all she is in a better place. Bless her soul. I also feel that the mom is just as guilty as these two monsters. Maybe not for kidnapping, rape and murder, but for child neglect and endangerment. Are officals sure something wasn’t going on between the mom and Chris? I know that my myspace has my fiance as my number one friend. Colleen has Chris before her own husband, and Chris has Colleen 1st as well. Jen, it sounds like you know the truth about what is going on. The media should be as truthful as yourself and let the public know who these monsters really are.
You really gotta wonder about the parents. Realistically these people have something quirky about them and can’t be completely normal. They never are. So why would a parent leave their children with them. Come on???
The fact that there are people like this who rape lil kids is horrible, but unavoidable. There’s always gonna be pedos. The media did the best they could with what they could. They don’t always get the truth from the officials, they do a lot of investigating of their own, that is why they ask so many questions. Fact= Julie step sister to Chris Collings over 15 years ago told several people that Chris was molesting her growing up and no one believed her. I have not gossiped about anything Sally, and yes in due time a lot of this will come to light. I only hope that the girls from his past are strong enough to come forward and help put him away for life, or death!!

I cannot believe that anyone would be so naive to say that he would never hurt their kids. what about the little girl? I am so tempted to just post his friends screen name in plain text, but you can figure it out by the script in previous post. I wasnt too polite with them, but to try and justify this by sayin his mother died a few weeks ago is lame to say the least. I have no compassion for him, or any friends that support him/try to justify what he did because he lost a loved one. wake up and get a friggin life.

Good for you Greg! The point I was making was what a sick man to use the death of his mother, then also take advantage of his dads property to commit such evil! He is a monster and I hope he gets what is coming to him. He really loved his mother when he beat and pushed her around when she was alive. He was very mean to his mother and all she ever did was take him in as a child and adopt him and try to give him a good home.
Greg my mom and dad live less than a mile from his as well. It is so hard for us to fathom that while my parents were sleeping a monster was doing what he did to that little child. Or the thoughts that while my kids were down there this wacko was running around loose. I have an 11 year old daughter thank God my parents never let my kids out of their sight when they are in Wheaton visiting them.

Hi Jen, I tried doing that but he wasnt accepting any messages. so, I wrote to myspace cs. I received 2 responses from collings friends that said they had also tried 3 days ago, but had yet to receive any confirmation. ya know, I used to live here off w hwy near wheaton back in 98, but got restless and wound up in ny. I adapted, but became very stressed with all the games people play. I learned very quickly that I had to watch my back. I decided I didnt want city life, and moved back here to get away from all that. Well, I will have been back 2 yrs now come march. Alot has changed. the area is growing, and with that comes much change. I hate to say it, but with the moral decay in our society, it’s only going to get worse. I used to let my kids play by themselves in the yard, but next spring,it will be different. this really blows my mind. People are talking about starting a community watch here. my nearest neighbor is about 1/4 mile down the rd. Never thought it would come to this, but atleast people here are ready to do something about it! America needs to stop looking the other way. I also live in Wheaton, and have known Chris and his family a long time. My parents and Poncho and Betty were friends. My mom still drinks coffee with Poncho sometimes, and cried when Betty was found dead. To show what a POS Chris was his mom laid dead in her house for 3 days with no member of her family checking on her over a weekend. I knew when Poncho was married to Diane and had heard that he was messing with Julie. I went to school with Julie’s brother Shawn and had heard that he was messing with Julie as well. Wouldnt doubt if Shawn and Chris were doing it together. I live on Hwy W but in town, but I know exactly where Chris’s camper is, I imagine he drove right past my house to take her out there. The Barry County Advertiser this week has a very lengthy article on it all, with information not on other sites. They also said the DFS hotlining was due to hygiene issues. Not abuse, but neglect. What I cannot believe is that PA Jonnie Cox has not yet decided if he will ask for the death penalty. I would have figured that would have been decided from the start. But I also heard that the BACA bikers have put out a hit on them, but no way to confirm if thats true or just a rumor. Would be nice if it was true.

WOW… I don’t even know where to start…. First of all anyone that would defend chris and or david needs their head examined…. You know what I dont understand? I hear that complaints had been filed with dfs in barry co, in the past,possibly about neglect? But nothing appearently was done about it? should not childrens services be held accountable to some degree if this is the case??? Hell, back east, if the state even got a whisper that there was not sufficient food for children in the home, they would be at the door demanding to inspect the home. Seems here, barry county is relaxed when it comes to the welfare of our kids. Oh, as for the trailer, alot of neighbors here, have been talking about burning it to the ground, but it is supposedly under surveillance. so if anyone wants to go vigilante out there, my hat is up to ya, but be careful… I understand it belongs to the father? So, I kind of have a concience for him, but if I knew it belonged to collings, I might be more inclined to accidently put flame to it. Either way, it needs to be removed from our area. Actually STella is in Newton County so it was the Newton County DFS that dropped the ball, not the Barry COunty DFS. Barry County DFS always has their nose up someones butt so they would have most likely investigated more.

Beckie I read the advertiser as well. She was found in her socks and a hairband. The pathologist who did the autopsy said it was one of the most gruesome he had seen. She had broken teeth etc… The report also said she would have bled to death from the injuries to her body. The picture and the story in paper stated that the day of court David had his head down stairing at the floor the whole time, and that Chris was looking around at the media while they took pictures. Just creepy creepy guy. He was creepy as a kid, not someone I ever would of thought about spending and time around growing up. Of course I was 3 years older than him. My family always knew Poncho and Betty and my uncle was very good friends all through school with Chris’ older sister Robin and her husband Mark. I feel sorry for them, they are not defending Chris and Robin does not want to even go out of the house as she is soo sickened and ashamed at what her brother has done.

My daughter went to school with Rowan. I, like a lot of you, have been OBSESSED with this case. THESE IDIOTS NEED TO FRY. Actually, I would like nothing better than to see them suffer for a several hours, much like Rowan, then die.
Unfortunately, in our lovely prison system, it’s not likely the the inmates with have anything to do with them; for this reason. Now, it is a FEDERAL crime to cause harm to a sex offender. WHY??? Because to do so falls under the HATE CRIME STATUTE. I know, it’s BS.

Local papers say that she was found in nothing but socks and a hairband, and had dried blood on her legs. Does Chris not look evil in the pictures? Scary guy… Always freaked me out!!! I hate even going to work knowing he is in the jail in Cassville. I told my mom I want them outta there as soon as possible. Don’t like feeling that they are even in same town and area.. I am still confused as to the confessions the boys gave. Each said they strangled her. Have we ever found out who actually killed her? I know it will come down to sentencing and that will determine who gets what. Just wondering what you all had heard. Oh and as to one of the posts above. We heard that the real father committed suicide. Any way of knowing for sure this father is still alive?

K obviously you are from the are as well. This is what I heard last night…. Clint the cop there in town took the confession from Chris on Hickman bridge. Someone (whom I cannot name) drove by and saw them talking on the bridge. Later when Clint saw this person he said “I’m so glad you didn’t stop because Chris was confessing to me at that very moment” He also said later in a cafe in Exeter that Chris said “just shoot me now” Clint said “Chris you know I can’t do that” Then Chris said “well I know they will kill me when I get to prison” and Clint said “yes that is possible Chris”. So Chris was already contemplating his demise. Clint has been a cop there for what?? gosh 15 years or more now. Chris must of felt that he could talk to Clint.

Davids statement said that when he got home Rowan was missing and he knew Chris had taken her. Like I was telling my husband tonight. You don’t automatically assume that unless the two of you had done things to this child before, or you know that he (Chris) had done this type of thing before.
Papers said alcohol and marijuana was found on them, but nothing more as far as any other drugs. Now I grew up knowing many people who smoked weed and that does not make you a rapist or a killer. The sick mind is already there in my opinion..
i realize this is an old post and all.. but, the 3rd guy that was seen w/ them at fastrip that night is a friend of mine.. he was in NO way shape or form involved in this and actually felt a sense of guilt for not knowing what was going to happen next so that he could stop it.. he only gave them a ride and dropped them off..

I’ve looked on several crimesites, but can’t seem to understand the timeline described. How did Chris end up at the girl’s house and have transportation to take her elsewhere?
You are right that it makes no sense that the stepdad ‘knew’ right away that the other POS had taken her, unless it had happened before, or if they’d already started in on her at that house before stepdad left for more beer? But then how could Chris have transported her? And then when stepdad returned, he had to call for his mom’s car so that he could get over there and not miss all the fun?
Some very important facts are being left out of this timeline. Can anyone piece together for me HOW the whole thing went down?
There’s a glitch about both of them supposedly claiming to strangle her (one inside, one outside), but it is possible that one of them thought he’d strangled her, but that when they took her outside to ‘dispose’ of her, she wasn’t dead yet, so the other one finished it?
I agree with some, I think ‘mom’ should be arrested as well. For participation/endangerment/coverup…. and along those lines, granny needs to be arrested as well for the part she played. The whole picture stinks, and everyone in it.
Do they do drug testing on suspects when they arrest them? I’ve known people who smoked pot, and were stupid and lost their jobs and such, but they weren’t violent because of the pot. Alcohol- yeah, I’ve seen people get mean on it. But this kind of thing just seems more like the kind of thing trailer-park cracker meth-heads do.
I think it’s probable that the ‘she looked at me’ excuse was taken out of context. It does not seem likely either of these POSs wore masks or blindfolded her, since she still would have known who they were. It’s more likely he meant that it was the ‘way’ she looked at him that made him decide to kill her. I’m guessing the look she gave him was one of hate.
I totally agree with you. I had a lot of friends that all did a lot of drugs in thier day; NONE of which are rapist of any kind, and none have killed anyone. Yeah, I knew about the third kid…both counties and the FBI interviewed him during the week she was “missing”. He did take a poly and passed. He was the one they were with the first trip out. He even said if he KNEW what they were going to do, he would have reported them himself.
Just by Chris’ comment to Clint, he KNEW what he was doing was wrong. NO ONE can use the “drugs” or “alcohol” as an excuse.
I have been told by someone who used to work with MO CPS that some of them from Greene county had to come down to Barry to help in thier office, it was common practice to LEAVE children in homes where sexual abuse was being accused. Now how sick is that??? They didn’t want to “break up the families”. The person who told me this was horrified. Makes you wonder if Rowan’s torture could have been prevented.
oh, jen i forgot to post…i checked the docket for the next seven days, nothing for either of them. on the day they were arraigned, they had to get attorney’s and “cause is set for PH *parliminary hearing* upon reciept of conflicts” Also, both of them are being held without bond.
When the attorney’s get involved and all the evidence is in, i believe that is when they will set the PH.
glorybug…(help me out here jen if i miss something) the way the timeline goes is…mom leaves for work about 8:45pm…david decides to go out with buddies at 10:45pm. he’s home at midnight…now, 12-1am there is a hole…could they have decided then to rape rowan? maybe chris took her to his house so the neighbors wouldn’t see/hear…but, at about 1 david calls mom to let him borrow the car because he is low on gas. (supposed to join buddy chris) mom comes over, david leaves, mom stays at the house watching tv until david comes home at about 6. mom leaves, colleen, rowan’s mom, comes home about 8:30am to find rowan missing from her bed. david is asleep in thier bed when she wakes him to ask where rowan is.
as for both of them confessing to killing her, your scenerio could be right. could be both of them are feeling guilty. however, the ME who did her autopsy did state that had they not strangled her, she would have died anyway due to blood loss as a result of the trama of her rape.

(which gave Chris time to go over there) Then around 1 David called mom due to low gas or truck not starting one of the two.
K did you also hear that she was taken with the sheet on her bed. Now as a mother the first thing I would of thought was kidnapping if the sheet was gone. Or was this mom such a pos that she didn’t know wether she had a sheet on her bed or not as if this was common for her to not have a sheet on her bed??? I don’t know the reasoning but heard she was taken wrapped in the sheet. I also heard that if she was not dead when they dropped her in the cave some of the blunt trauma from that drop would of killed her too.

How could this have happened, where Chris got to the house before stepdad? I thought they were all together with the 3rd guy? Are we talking 3 different cars, plus grannys car, or? Because I thought I read that one or two of the guys had been ‘dropped off’, which is hard to do if you’re alone in your car. Does anyone know who had what kind of car? Including granny’s? At any point were all 3 of the men at the house while the girl was there, or just the 2, or 1? Supposedly someone went out for more beer. From where- the house? Who drove? Did stepdad return from beerrun, with guy 3, having left the girl alone with Chris? How then did guy 3 get home, without knowing ‘the plan’, if stepdad’s car had no gas and he had to borrow granny’s?

As far as I know Mahurin had Chris took him to Davids house in stella. David had a vehicle but was never used that night. The 3 boys then go to Wheaton to get beer, Drive around drinking. Then they take Chris home which is in Wheaton. At this point I guess is when Chris took his own vehicle over to Stella and got Rowan. The Mahurin boy takes David back home and leaves. David realizes Rowan is gone. His vehicle he cannot use due to low gas or won’t start or something… Then calls mother to borrow her vehicle and drives back to Wheaton where Chris is at his house with Rowan. Does that help?? That is what I have heard.
wow Jen, if this is the mahurin I am thinking of, I used to live by him years ago in exeter as a teen, The guy I used to somewhat know went by the name jimmy. He lived in his mothers trailer right across from exeter elementary. He has a mental condition or, for lack of better words, was not the tallest tree in the park. but I dont think he was a threat, but who knows? As for colleen, She did inquire about her husband, but supposedly what made things strange was that she inquired of collings. I cannot state this as fact. If it is gossip, then it is unintentional. I am just repeating what a man in his 50′s told me, he has lived his whole life in wheaton, and is very active in the local community, helps organize and supervise the cruises that go on in summer.

I do not know the first name of the Mahurin guy sorry. I know that the three of them were working for my cousin Bobby Brown on a barn he had them working on. He was sick to know that the week after it happened they were working for him until their arrest at the end of that week. I will find out from my sister what exactly the name was of the Mahurin boy.

I am releived to hear that atleast he was not involved. does anyone have an opinion on what they would like to see happen with the crime scene? I mean, It is important that people never forget that this took place, but to have a structure that contained so much evil stand bothers me. I would rather see a memorial than a trashy trailer. Obviously, chris must have had a working vehicle, or he would not have been able to immediately drive back and kidnap the girl. So why was he (as it’s implied) be riding in another car and having to be ‘dropped off?. When I was younger, and went to bars etc., I met my friends there if I was planning to go home alone, in my own car.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say… I believe there is something very wrong with the timeline of who was where, when.

I have read nothing about the timeline before all this crap. Such as, why was the girl not wearing pajamas? Why was she found wearing socks? My boys sometimes sleep in their tshirts and briefs, instead of pjs if we’ve had a late night, but they rarely wear socks to bed, and I usually take my socks off also when I sleep.
“Socks on” implies to me that either the girl never even went to bed while the 3 men were there, or else she hadn’t been asleep long enough to kick them off. Maybe sock-wearing sleepers can tell me differently.
The bedsheet. No reason to take the sheet unless the assault started in that house. What use could the sheet have had unless it already had dna on it? Other pathetic murders of children who were abducted from home did not take sheets. The fact that the mom, who I won’t name, because I am embarrassed to share the same name, did not notice that the girl’s sheet was gone? How far can you go towards being a bad parent? My children are almost 8 and 10, and because of divorce proceedings I have them every other week. Before last year I had them 24/7. There is not one night that has gone by, before or after our divorce proceedings, where I have not checked on my boys sleeping. Many times a night. Sometimes just to see them with their noisy mouths closed, but more to make sure that for some crazy reason that they haven’t died. Morbid, I know, but sometimes it seems I just want to make sure that these people that I love do actually exist.
This obsessiveness has paid off. My eldest I had to take to ER because he didn’t look right even though he was sleeping. He ended up being diagnosed with a hole in his heart. Which was fixed. My youngest was not breathing 2 diffenent times, and was taken to ER… where it was found that he had a bronchial infection and immune disfunction (which I guess he got from me because of my Fibromyalgia and chronic Epstein Barr) that kept him from breathing. We now have emergency inhalers in case it ever happens again.
Point being (long, I know), what kind of parent does not check on their children? What kind of Grandma does not check on their grandkids? Strike one. Granny, Mommy and Stepdad are all guilty of not checking on the girl.
Reports I’ve read say that Chris lived with ‘the family’ (lordy I hate calling it that) until 2 months before the murder. Meaning, mom, her loser husband and partner in killing all lived together before the murder. And supposedly had since the happy couple got married 5 years prior.
Do you think that these two guys were gentlemen up until the night they killed the girl? Not likely. It is more likely that after having years of access to the girl, and both raping her repeatedly over the years (especially after some of the in-town gossip says that mom was effing chris as well as david, and that many times it was a threesome) that Chris wanted to continue the ‘fun’ he’d been having at the house with the girl, so ran over and abducted her. He hadn’t been having access to the girl for 2 months, right?
And when the stepdad came home, he did not check on the girl for her wellbeing, before he went out again. But for some reason he checked for her after he’d left her alone, and somehow magically ‘knew’ that chris had taken her.
“Granny”, for some reason didn’t have a problem with coming over after 1am to let her loser son use her suv, even though he claims he was so drunk that he blacked out and didn’t remember raping, sodomizing and strangling his stepdaughter. And he had no license because of driving offenses. What mother in the world, no matter how much they love their children, would give their car to a supposedly black-out drunk, and then sit there on her fat effen ass ‘not’ watching her grandchild that while she snored was being beaten, raped, sodomized and killed by her own son?
Even though the POSs supposedly confessed, I think even though they obviously were cracker meth-heads, I think those confessions will be thrown out. I think both POSs attorneys will try to claim that because both POss admitted to killing the girl, it causes reasonable doubt for both. clever.
I am going to guess, and very well may proven wrong, that stepdad and chris had been abusing the girl for years, and that the mom knew and tolerated it. That the fact that the stepdad ‘knew’ who’d taken the girl, and then when he drove over to confirm it, instead of killing the guy, he, according to his own confession, dropped his drawers and proceeded to rape the girl also. Jealosy?
Granny obviously knew she was being used for an alibi… I have asked repeatedly if anyone knows the cars involved, because some news says Granny’s car was used to dump the girl. Maybe between the three losers, granny’s suv was the only one big enough to haul the girl’s body? What POS grandma doesn’t check on her grandkids?
Mom? Yeah, she’s there too. She lived with both of the POS until 2 months earlier? Worked a 12 hour shift, when other people she worked with said there is no such thing as a 12 hour shift as she claimed? Didn’t immediately report her child missing in the hopes that she’d be embarrassed later when the child was found? No. She checked into her own myspace instead of searching, and made no comment that her child was gone.

Confusion I know Glorybug. It all does not make sense. I am hopeful that this will all come out on the timeline but I am afraid we are in sit and wait mode. I like you and everyone else I know are doing the same as you. In our heads we are trying to piece it together.
Here is my thought as well as I have thought some of the same things as you have.
The boys were seen at the fastrip at 10:45pm buying alcohol. (Marijuana was part of the equation as well according to Mick Epperly Barry County Chief) That means on the timeline if they were home (or all 3 at Davids house) and drove directly to Wheaton to get alcohol which would of taken about 15 minutes max if they drove straight there from Stella. Meant that around 10:30pm they would have left Rowan. Now my kids are 11, 12, and 15 and on weekends they do not go to bed early as they would on a school night. I find it hard to believe that she was sleeping at this point myself. Especially with 3 rowdy pos’s in the house with her. I have heard nothing on timeline as far as when did the 2 boys get to Davids house what time was this? So there is no time frame as to how long were they all there with this child before they left her alone. The only definite piece to this timeline is the tapes at fastrip revealed they were there at 10:45pm. Before that and after that is unkown on exact time, and is at that point souly being relied on by what the boys are telling officials.
Two conflicting reports by newspaper articles in Cassville as well. One states that she was found in only socks and hairband. The other paper states that she was wearing nothing from the waste down when she was found.
Greg Horton the brother of Chris stated that on the Saturday she was missing that Chris had rode to Springfield to Lowes with he and his family. He stated that on the way there Chris got the phone call that Rowan was missing. Greg stated that he (Chris) was very worried and said “I gotta get back right now and help them look for her”. Greg said “that Chris was very quiet on the ride back” I would love to know exactly what was said on the phone to Chris and who was it that actually called him? Colleen, David who??
And what time was this phone call? If mom came home and daughter was missing after all she did take time to log onto her myspace account.
I do not feel that this was the first time these guys messed with this little girl either. You wouldn’t assume that your best friend took her unless you knew for sure HE DID. Was they messing with her before they left so David knew Chris had come back for more? The whole thing stinks and yes I do feel mom, and granny know more than they are telling.
I asked my mom the same question… If I was gone and my husband was home with the kids and called you at 1am or so in the morning how would you react?? First question would be what the hell for? And immidiately she would know he was up to no good!! But mom ran right over as if this was normal behavior for this family. Or did she know they had done something and needed to cover their tracks and get rid of the body? No one is buying that this grandmother just went over there with no questions or never checked on this child. I hope that old hag can get her hands on some cross stitch or latch hook in prison. She is going to need it to keep her occuppied. That is aiding a criminal as far as my imagination can stretch.
I know that everyone on here is very upset. And we all have a right to be. Right now though, we are in a “hurry up and wait” time. I’m not so sure the confessions with be thrown out. The ME DID state that she would have bled to death if someone hadn’t strangled her. So, is it so far fetched that the one that inflicted the most trama during the rape AND the one who strangled her will both get murder charges.
Keep in mind, the prosecutor is still trying to sift through all the BS these two have spewed. Also, you need to remember, in MO public defenders are employed by the state. They don’t come from a lawyer pool like a lot of states.
These guys aren’t rocket scientists. We know the timeline doesn’t match. We know EVERYONE involved is lying. But, I think the explaination is fairly simple. I mean, if breathing wasn’t involuntary, would any of them survive?
I do know, (yes Sally, this is FACT) that Nathan Marhurin did submit to a polygraph and passed. Now, yes, these can be fooled, but, I digress to my earlier “rocket scientist” statement.

I do not live in Wheaton anymore, but not far from there in Monett area.. I grew up in that town and my family all still lives there. I have wondered about the purple and yellow ribbons myself K and I think that every light pole in that town should have purple and yellow on it all up and down Main street and all along the highway. And especially W highway on the county road she was killed on. I think it would make a statement as well to the prosecutor that this town is grieving and damn mad at what has happened and our support is for the little life that was taken away.

Hey jen i read all of your things and i agree with you on everything.. i went to school with rowans older sister Ariean and i always thought that something wasnt quite right in that home. socail serices got called over rowans hygiene and head lice. and when i went to school with her sister i remember her sister didnt have good hygiene at all and the teachers would talk to her about it, because other students would complain. i meat david spears at the resturant i worked at in longview. he came in there sometimes to pick up some food with the rowan and ariean. he was weird like a creepy qite mean acting guy. but i always had a feeling that things where bad in that home. when rowan was little im not sure how little back when she went to rocky school i remember seeing her get on the bus and she was dirty and all of her teeth were rotten, but she was cute and i remember feeling sorry for her back then. when i heard the news on her i was in schock because i knew her sister and rode the bus with them and everything.

I too went to Rocky when I was younger then we moved to Wheaton years ago. I did not know David but thank you on your perspective of that situation. I only knew Chris and his family. I just found this web site tonight. Rowan has been on my mind every single day for almost a month now. I have a 6 year old daughter and am a single mother. My co-workers think that I am insane for it bothering me so much! I currently live in Springfield, but have a lot of family from the Granby, Neosho and Stella area. I think that it was a wonderful idea about the candles and entering the parade in memory of Rowan. I hope it went well and wish I could have helped in some way. Why haven’t these men been charged with sodomy?? I have tried to look up the coroners report but can’t find it.

I am sorry to hear that you didn’t get to do the parade. I am REALLY hoping that Rowan is NEVER forgotten. I have read all of the terrible things people have said about her mother. I am sure that she probably wasn’t a “role” model as a mother, but none the less she is going to go through the holidays without her daughter and knowing that part of it is because she allowed those people in her life. I hope that your daughter is dealing with all of this okay….my daughter didn’t even know her and she says things about her, so I can’t imagine how I would deal with it if she actually knew her and lived in the same town. I hope that there are more charges!!! I just hope they get put in with the general population a couple of times:) Please let me know if I can help by giving money, time or getting donations. K, in response to hoping that Rowan will never be forgotten, rest assured, she will not. Especially for people close in this community. I personally had to take a step back mainly for lack of anything positive to post. It seems to weigh heavy on me when I read so much negative. Its a shame there is nothing positive to say. everyone has lost right down to the animals that did this. They in my opinion have sold their souls. But I am not God, and one can never know what he may have in mind for them. One positive though, I know deep within that God has wiped away Rowan’s tears, and she is free to run and play and is dancing with joy in heaven. Never again will she live in fear or sorrow. Jen, from what I understand, Rowan’s father that committed suicide was not her biological father. He was another stepfather who had wanted to adopt Rowan and one other sister because thier father’s were not in thier lives.
I believe he wasColeen’s ex-boyfriend Adam Chichawoski, another chronic alcoholic who later committed suicide. He was not Rowan’s biological father.

What I have read from various involved people is that the reason the girl would have died anyway is because one or the other of the people who assaulted her was not able to physically rape her vaginally or anally, and so resorted to using a knife beforehand in order to be physically able to do so. From their claims, she would have bled to death regardless if she’d been strangled or not.
Trying to wrap my head about this freakish crime is hard.
I do not think that all the truth is out there regarding the timeline or the mother and grandmother’s involvement, and it may nver come out.
Both men supposedly have admitted to raping the girl, even though both are now trying to retract their confessions. Both claim to have strangled her. But, LE says that one of them supposedly claimed that the reason she was killed was because she ‘looked’ at him.
This is not reasonable, because even if she’d been blindfolded (which I doubt), she still would have been able to identify her attackers by voice since she knew them so well. It is likely that his statement was taken out of context, and that what he meant was that the ‘way’ she looked at him made him make that decision. How she looked at them would no doubt make them feel guilty and make them decide to off her. Either because she was so far gone that they needed her to just die already, or because they feared she would live and tell on them.
I would guess that (if the rumours are true) if she’d been ‘enlarged’ with a knife, it would have been obvious to one or both of the men that she WAS going to die already… so it would be no big deal to strangle her and get it over with.
And, if the rumours are true, there’s no way either man was able to get away from the scene without having massive bloodstains on their clothing. Which makes Grandma look more than suspicious.
I think the timeline is all wrong, and that what actually happened during that time is very different than the story told. The mother’s timeline/story doesn’t wash, either.
Whatever the sentence these freaks get, (and I doubt it will reflect the horrific crime… I would like to see the mother and grandmother get the same.
There are also rumours that in addition to the chronic headlice the girl had (which is so easy to fix with shampoos, washing sheets, pony-tailing children with long hair), she also was found with pubic lice (Slang- ‘crabs’), which as far as I know is only tranmitted through sexual contact. Meaning that the girl had already been sexually molested prior.
I dont really get why the mom is only now divorcing her pos boyfriend. I understand her trying to save her ass now, but it’s a sorry band-aid, since it’s obvious she didn’t care about having her children be around abusive/molessting men. Divorcing the pos now is not going to give her the sympathy she obviouly wants, since she had to have known some of what was going on.

I would say that any means of transmission was possible in that household. It was not a clean place in the least, and I would not be surpised if clothes were mixed together, and not cleaned on a regular basis possibly causing spread of infection. As for the knife scenario??? Very possible… But, so is frivilous rumours on the net. Our sick history tells us that Rowan wasn’t the first, and that children even younger than her have had horrible things done to them. Shit. I cant believe I am posting krap like this. I have read about the pubic lice, the ‘knife’ deal, and rumours that the mother and the two men were into threesomes on several different forums/blogs. Googling the girl’s name will bring up all those sites, and many more.
I am not offended that anyone questions what I posted. I thought I made it clear that I was only posting what ‘supposedly’ family members and locals had written on other sites.
Although it is hard for me to believe/imagine, the fact that LE has implied that the girl would have died anyway due to blood loss, and not many girls her age who have been raped die from just the rape- and no mention of her being stabbed, lends credence to the knife rumour.

My oldest boy, because he has very long hair (we’re Pottowatomi Indian) had the bad luck to get headlice from an infecte girl at school. He was miserable from all the itchiness. Some shampoo and washing clothes/bedsheets fixed it immediately, and now I make him ponytail when he plays with other children. I was petrified that I would get it, as I have long hair too, and I did not want his brother getting it. Allowing your child to have headlice and keep them (and don’t get me started on the pubic lice thing) IS child abuse. Since the school nurse claimed she’d been sent home month after month for it, it seems likely that everyone else in the house was also infected. Maybe those POS just weren’t bothered by having their heads and bodys covered with itchy, scratchy bugs that bite and suck your blood.
It is obvious from her pictures, that what was clearly a beautiful little girl suffered also from poor dental hygeine. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, it is child abuse to not provide your child with a clean living environment and ensuring their personal hygeine is good.
And if any one of the adult individuals in this child’s life, from her family and friends, to her school and church, to intervene just about the hygeine issues, this girl would not be dead now.

That’s not true…there were CPS reports initiated by school about the lice, and there are investigative reports on the net…They found the lice but no evidence the child was in danger.
CPS does not routinely remove children from homes for hygiene issues. I wish the hygiene issues would have forced CPS to get a full medical exam (including pelvic)…That would have brought the secrets out (IMO).
Children in these situations are likely to keep the secrets to keep their family together or avoid hurting their mother.

As far as the comment about what to do with the crime scene, my mom ate breakfast with Poncho a couple weeks ago and he said that the FBI and county were all done with their investigation and told him that after 30 days they would release the trailer to him to do with as he pleased and he planned to call the fire department and burn it to the ground. He goes out there to care for the goats and said he cannot stand to see the trailer knowing what happened there. So that is the plan there. CASSVILLE, Mo. — A Wheaton man accused of raping and killing a 9-year-old Stella girl was bound over to circuit court Friday after waiving his preliminary hearing.
Chris Collings, 32, will stand trial for one count of first-degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape in connection with the abduction, alleged sexual assault and murder of Rowan Ford last month.
Collings waived his preliminary hearing after appearing before Judge Victor Head with his public defender, Clate Baker, said Barry County Prosecutor Johnnie Cox. Collings’ court appearance on Friday was his first since his initial arraignment on Nov. 13.
Ford’s stepfather, David W. Spears, 25, is also charged with one count of first-degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape in connection with the Ford case.
Spears’ case remains in Barry County Associate Court, and his next hearing date is still to be set, Cox said.
Investigators believe Rowan Ford was abducted early Nov. 3 from her home in Stella in Newton County, murdered in Barry County, and her body disposed of in McDonald County.
Ford’s body was found in a sinkhole after a nearly weeklong search that involved the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, the McDonald County Sheriff’s Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the FBI.
Authorities still are trying to reconcile discrepancies between the two defendants’ accounts of the events leading to Rowan’s death. Both David Spears and Collings reportedly have confessed to rape and murder.
Colleen Spears, David Spears’ wife and Rowan Ford’s mother, filed for divorce on Nov. 27. That case, too, is pending.

He’s scheduled to appear in a Phelps County court today 1:00 PM 11/3/2008 . That’s when a judge is expected to set a date for his murder trial.

Sentances should be hard and carried out to the letter. Should a criminal be sentanced to death the appeal should take place within 2 weeks and be over in 5 days. The sentance carried out directly after.
Should a person recieve prison time then the time spent should be as unpleasant as we can make it. No more TV, internet, phones, visits from friends and family. 3 very bad meals a day that the criminals grow and prepare themselvs, a thin mattrace, 1 blanket, 1 pillow and thats it. You wanna lift weights and play basket ball? But the shit yerself asshole.
No today we have the liberals who slobber and moan everytime a criminal gets the needle. They ignore the fact that the criminal has been fairly tried, found guilty and has goen through the complete appeal system. They are so full of themselvs that they ignore all the facts and evidence in the case. They only see what they want to see. Tehy see a man who has been “beaten down” and they refuse to see the victims.
Eternal that is one of the reasons I chose to live and work in Germany. No it doesn’t make sense. But when I was stationed in Texas I followed a case where a man raped and murdered 17 women before he was caught. The 18th victim survived and testified against the slime. His defense? All the women wanted it. He got 15 years and was out in 1.5. He killed the witness and was thrown back in jail for another 15 years. 5 years later he was out again raping and killing. I got fed up with the whole thing. Germany is no better.
OH..jesus..I can’t imagine WHY I never heard of this poor little girls tragic story before! Those fuckin PIECES OF SHIT! I can’t even imagine why people like this even walk this earth! I am SOOO angry and I feel so powerless. This child was obviously suffering and SOMEBODY should have noticed and done somthing! Even in the pictures I see of her she looks just sad and depressed. Hell is too good for those involved in this girls horrific life and murder! And I am sure more people contributed to this besides these two fuckheads(mom, grandma etc.)R.I.P. DAMMIT! DAMMIT! I saw that David Spears trial had been moved to my hometown. I just left there last year when I got married! Oh how I wish I was back home and on that jury!
I live in that county and I got called for jury duty this term…why oh why couldn’t it have been next summer? I hope they fry this POS!

In my opinion they should both die for what they have done. Hopful a very slow painful one. As Greg Horton he is one of the stupidest people anyone could possibly ever talk to. Anyone that would stand up for someone that could comit such a crime deserves so be right there with them when they die. I hope the wrath of god torchers them for the rest of there lives. If Spears mother was suppost to be babysitting then I believe she should get the needle to.
I realize this is an old thread but after reading all of it, I just wanted to be able to give the latest updates and correct a few things that were once said or considered.
Colleen divorced david immediately after he was arrested. She remarried and became pregnant within a year afterwards.
She received A LOT of financial donations during the period of time immediately following Rowan’s death.
Colleen did not come to the jail inquiring about bonding for either Collins or Spears.
A local bondsman DID receive many inquiries about bonding them out – but only because certain people wanted them out and on the street so that their own kind of justice could be served.
There was no knife used in the rape or murder.
Neither Colleen nor spears’ mother has ever been charged with any crime involved with this case.
Spears’ mom is/was an alcoholic and was more than likely drunk the night she came over to give david her car. (I also believe that she has lied about how much she knew what had gone on at the time)
The trials have been rescheduled for 2010 (spears) and 2011 (collins) this is not uncommon for 1st degree murder charges/seeking the death penality. The prosecution wants to make sure they have everything possible, all the t’s are crossed, i’s dotted because you only get ONE chance of a conviction. Seeking the death penality is extremely difficult because there are so many criterias that have to be met and proven. I’d rather see a delay in the trials than to rush into one and not having everything needed in order to gain a conviction and death sentence. They are still incarcerated, so it’s not like they are walking the streets. They are not living in the lap of luxury at the Barry county jail.
The average time of an inmate on death row before actually being executed is around 12-15 years. (the highway patrol has a website link to Missouri death row inmates)
this is also another reason why those involved in the prosecution is so tight lipped about the cases. They don’t want anything to go wrong with the prosecution.
To date – only spears has recanted his confession. He will no doubt spend the rest of his life incarcerated but he wouldn’t be facing the death penality.
death row inmates are kept isolated and solitary. I’d rather see them get life without parole because then they’d be in the general population of the prison – which will cause them more harm and fear. they need to know what real fear is about – especially since that is what Rowan felt before she was raped and murdered.
I am a firm supporter of the death penality! but in this case – I’d rather see them suffer for the next 30 years.
(Life = 30 years or until the age of 72 in the missouri prison system) The only way to keep them in prison for the full 30 years is to be sentenced with “without parole”.
Rowan is in a much better place now.

Yes, Thanks JR. It’s way too busy around here for me to keep up with the updated news on every story, so I count on my readers to let me know when they run into something.
I think we each come across a case where it hits us in the gut. Rowan Ford was that case for me. She went to church and school early to escape her home. Sometimes she would show up at church before dawn. Sometimes other church members would have to clean her up. In so many ways, Rowan’s life was hell on earth. David Spears had started drinking again after being sober a year, according to his mother. Up until that night, Rowan was reportedly close to Chris Collings. Rowan is pulled out of bed in the middle of the night by her personal drunk POS terrorist and Chris. What thoughts must have went through Rowan’s head on that 15 minute drive to Chris’ place? Were the two of them drunk and laughing about their plans? They then take Rowan out to a goat yard (sans fences because Collings just tied his goats up) and take turns (or maybe jointly) rape her. Raped her viciously given the descriptions of the blood on her body when she was found. Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly said an autopsy showed the girl was “brutally” raped before she was strangled to death by a netting cord, believed to be off a chicken-house curtain. Another report said the cord was one Collings used to tie up his goats.
I didn’t come here to re-write this story, although it looks like I did–sorry. After all this time, this case still opens a hole in my gut. I wanted to update this story with the latest I have on the pending trials of David Spears and Chris Collings. Both face the death penalty if they are convicted. Spears trial has been moved to Pulaski County (Waynesville MO) and Collings trial has been moved to Phelps County (Rolla MO). Spears trial was set to begin this month, but it has been continued to August 2011. As far as I know, Collings trial is still scheduled for March 2011.
