I am tired of my rights, the victims rights, the person walking down the street minding their own business- all of our rights being put second to pedophiles, criminals, murderers. What about our right to go about our lives without being in fear? I have had bi-polar, depression, alcoholism, all of that in friends and family so yes, I am not unsympathetic to mental illness-but if someone has homicidal tenancies, someone refuses to take them meds, someone is a danger to society then they need to be locked up where the will not harm anyone else. He did know what he was doing-his actions showed an awareness of planning, picking out victims. The pendulum for civil rights for criminals has swung too far in favor of the criminal. The victim had rights too, damned shame they were not as important as our "poor mentally ill victim of society, drug companies, social policy-sarcasm intended" I hear you. So what if he was mentally ill? So what if "didn't know what he was doing?" The fact that he still committed this act (murdering an innocent because his girlfriend and intended target wasn't around then beating a random stranger with a crowbar), and freely admitted to it, means that he should face some punishment for it. And since this is not something minor like speeding or breaking a dish, I think the punishment should be a bit more severe. Bottom Line.
