I know this is an extremely old post but I would like to point out to Brittany that the reason Methadone is given to Heroin addicts is because unlike Heroin, Methadone is measured precisely. When you take Heroin you never know how much of the actual drug you are going to get and there for can't taper down slowly as you could with Methadone.

For instance. If a user bought and took 50 cc (I don't know real amounts this is just for examples.) of Heroin she bought from deal A she would have 25 mgs of actual Heroin. If she went out and took 25 ccs of Heroin she got from dealer B, this time she could be taking 50 mgs of actual Heroin. There is no way of knowing how much of the actual drug your getting every time you take Heroin.

Where as with Methadone, it's regulated. If the pill says 50mg every pill that says 50mg will be that amount. In theory, the levels of Methadone can be lowered over time until the user is completely free of both drugs with out those horrible withdrawal symptoms.

Personally, I think it's bulls**t. No pain no gain. With out the psychological and physical pain of withdrawal there is no reason for the person to NOT return to using. It's like a kid who touches a flame. Once the pain is physically gone, the memory of the pain sticks with you for the rest of your life.

I don't understand how a rehab center left her alone, unmonitored, with an infant. Aren't they supposed to be the experts in understanding that addicts are untrustworthy and unpredictable?

It wasn't the pills that made her do anything. Pills are not sentient and they do not make choices. People do.

Good grief.
