Heather Trujillo and her boyfriend, 17-year-old Lamar Roberts, were babysitting Zoe Garcia and her younger 3-year-old twin sisters on the afternoon of the 6th of December, 2007 while Heather and Zoe’s mother was working at the “Corral Bar,” which was about five blocks away.
Zoe Garcia, who has been described as a “beautiful little girl,” had moved with her family into the house last April. The family didn’t really get along well with neighbors, who have described them as “combative.”
Next-door neighbor Laura Valdivieso went so far as to tell reporters, “They didn’t fit in. They were noisy and disruptive.”
Everyone seemed to like Zoe Garcia, however. She was a beautiful little girl who made friends with everybody, often playing with a jump rope that Laura Valdivieso gave to her.
Zoe Garcia was also a little girl who neighbors described as “hungry.”
John Valdivieso mentioned that Zoe once asked him for some bread. He gave her half a loaf, which the little girl wolfed down.
Well, on the afternoon of the 6th of December, the house that Zoe and Heather lived in was especially noisy and disruptive.
Heather Trujillo and her boyfriend Lamar Roberts chose that afternoon to reenact scenes from Mortal Kombat on Zoe, who didn’t really enjoy the beating at all. She, in fact, died from the beating that her sister and Roberts inflicted upon her.
Lamar Roberts, who has claimed that his fists are “lethal weapons,” did most of the beating, but Heather had no problem helping him out, savagely kicking and hitting little Zoe. At one point the pair picked Zoe up, and bodyslammed her, dropping her on her side and breaking her wrist.
Zoe endured the beating, however.
She kept getting up, crying and asking Lamar to stop hitting her.
He didn’t, of course, because, as he claimed to a witness, “I was drunk.”
Lamar told that witness that at the end of the beating he had performed a back kick on Zoe, then as she was running back towards him, had kicked her again. Lamar Roberts claimed that this final kick caused Zoe Garcia to fall down to the ground.
This time she didn’t get up.
Heather Trujillo and Lamar Roberts thought that Zoe might have been playing a trick on them and put her into the bath and ran water over her, which actually temporarily revived her…until she stopped breathing again.
In a move which would stun EMT’s everywhere, Lamar Roberts chose this moment to crack an egg in Zoe Garcia’s mouth to see if she was really hurt or if she was just “messing around with them.”
Well, the egg went down Zoe’s throat and the pair finally decided, 15 minutes after the 7-year-old stopped breathing, that maybe they should pick up the phone and call someone to help.
Her mother and paramedics were called, and Zoe was rushed to the hospital.
The doctors treating her inventoried a broken right wrist, more than 20 serious bruises over her body, bleeding neck muscles and a torn skin flap by her tongue.
She was pronounced dead that night. According to the coroner, the cause of death was blunt force trauma to her brain and central nervous system.
Lamar Roberts had no problem placing the blame on Heather Trujillo, claiming to the police that the two sisters had been upstairs wrestling around while he was downstairs playing video games. This might have worked except for that statement he made to a witness, where he claimed to have done most of the beating himself.
This wasn’t the first time Lamar and Heather abused others in this household, either.
Five people in the neighborhood contacted the Weld County Department of Social Services in the months leading up to Zoe’s death. One of the neighbors claimed that Zoe spent a lot of time at her house during the summer and was often asking for food.
A month or so after school had started, Zoe Garcia had told this neighbor that a couch had fallen on one of the 3-year-old twin’s head.
Another neighbor Rhonda Simonetti, had baby-sat Zoe and her twin sisters twice, for four days each time, when she noticed bruises on Zoe.
The first time I asked her, she said she fell down the stairs. The second time, she started crying and said Lamar had been hitting her.
Rhonda Simonetti said she took a day off work to report the abuse to the Weld County Department of Social Services but never heard back.
Well, good work, Weld County Department of Social Services!
Way to spend our tax dollars.
Heather Trujillo and Lamar Roberts were arrested on the 18th of December, 2007. They were charged with child abuse resulting in death, a Class II felony.
They could be sentenced to 48 years in prison if convicted.

I first read a very brief account of this murder, but now, reading this, I think it really is true that the ‘Devil is in the details’, as the saying goes.
Why am I not surprised that there’s a neglectful, if not abusive (big sis must have learned it somewhere) mom involved, who works at a bar. And who thinks it’s appropriate that her teen daughter AND her boyfriend should be caring for a 7 year old and twin 3 year olds. While drinking.
I am surprised that the story doesn’t include the 7 year old being molested by the boyfriend, (yet, anyway), or that the twin toddlers did not end up drowning in the bathtub while the teens fucked in the other room.
Questions-
Where did the alcohol come from? Oh, wait, mom works at a bar. Screw that old age limit for drinking. Might as well throw out age of consent while I’m at it.
Where was mom’s POS abusive boyfriend during all of this? Where were the three drug addict loser abusive fathers of these 4 children at?
I am really getting sick of hearing the same twisted fucking script for all these child abuse/murders.
The only significant difference in this case is that the bizarre detail which is standard in all these crimes involves an egg.

(Not that I have anything against the word cunt, or cunts in general. I’m quite fond of my own, actually).
It is a good thing that so many people don’t see the ‘c’ word as just another body part, but are massively offended by it’s use as a descriptive term. That means I try to save it for particularly heinous, disgusting women, so that the shock value has some impact. In that way, whatever insult it supposedly is towards women can affectively be harnessed for good!
What I am struggling with, is a descriptive term for the POS boyfriend that has as much emotional impact. Because whatever word that would be, I’d like to call him that, too.

I remember when I was growing up and yeah ok, my mom was running a drug ring in our house as well as it was a hideout for felons, “vampires” and whores and I was never abused yet fucking CPS and the cops were there 3-4 times a week. WTF?!?
CPS is so overworked and underfunded. It’s a shame this is the first agency that gets the ax for budget cuts. So many of these deaths could be prevented but we see fit to give our $$ elsewhere. Oh well, as I said before, at least these two will have sparing partners in jail. Let’s see how tough they are againest the other inmates.

Now, this episode has touched me in a very profound way since just as I thought I had seen the worst there is to see in the lowest possible waste of flesh excuse for a human being this happens. I’m the eldest son amongst 4 siblings, one of which is adopted. More than once have I been required to care for my brother and sisters and have always treated the with my fullest attention. It’s a child’s life in your hands, how on God’s name could they have done something like this? The whole fucked up family thing aside, how could something like this have happened? To break an egg on a little girl’s mouth is barbaric, to do it so as to make sure she isn’t pulling a prank after being knocked around and kicked twice by a 17 year old animal and her own sister… That’s something I don’t even want to try and understand. Heck when one of my siblings, no matter what age, falls ill or becomes injured while playing I drop everything and aid him ’cause that’s what brothers are supposed to do, I’ve canceled dates and whatever the hell I had planed so that I could take care of my brothers and sisters when my parents couldn’t be around, and to see a seven year old be brutalized this way by a sadistic animal while her sister is there, watching and not doing anything… it’s just inhuman. These people are, in every sense of the word, evil, what they have done is unforgivable and I hope they rot in that prison, I hope they live every single second of those 48 years and feel the pain they’ve caused to that little girl for the rest of their pathetic lives.
I don’t care how this sounds, but what was done… It’s cruel, unforgivable. As a caring brother who has taken care of his siblings his entire life, I cannot look at these things and not feel disgusted.

My dad was abusive. He was aslo a clean freak. If the house was not perfect my mother would get a hiding. The problem with that was that my mother was very ill and spent most of her life in and out of hospital. That left my older sister and i to care for our younger brothers and cook meals and clean the house to my fathers standards. Which at five was not easy. But i did it. I did it up until i was 17 and left home.
I dont recall ever beating my little brothers. Dreamed about beating my fuckwit father often…but never harmed my baby brothers at all.

My parents were always drinking, I know how it is to have to take care of someone. At the age of 9 and 10 I had to make food for my little brothers and do whatever was needed around the house.

You’re right. I have no understanding of why anyone would CHOOSE to be around anyone who is physically or verbally or emotionally abusive. Or, why a mother would let their child be around someone like that, either. Understatement of the year. There are a lot of people who have had bad lives. They generally try to stay away from abusive people who make lives worse, not better. And they don’t help their fuckbuddy kill their little sister and not at least call 911 at any time. A black eye would certainly have been worth getting 911 over before your sister was dead.

What kind of mother allows their 14 year old daughter to have a live-in boyfriend? And imagine that when she went to work they were responsibly babysitting and playing ‘Hungry, Hungry, Hippos’ with the kids instead of fucking on the mom’s bed. And then beating the younger sister to death. I’m guessing it’s no big deal that other children in the house had told neighbors that the POS boyfriend had been beating them, too? This mom had plenty of time to set a good example, kick out the POS that without a doubt would knock her teen up every other week, and protecting her other children from his abuse.
Mom didn’t need to provide alcohol for the underaged wannabe-ninjas. She also could have stopped popping out babies from different babydaddies, if she couldn’t take care of them herself.
I find it sad that there are so many stories on here about teens who had hard, abusive lives, but they were on the honor roll in school, or were attending college, proving that ANYONE can crawl out of the sewer if they WANT to…. and they end up getting murdered by some new fuckfriend of their ‘mother’s. Then the teens who appear to be trying to do nothing more than avoid getting an education or job, whose goals are to stay as drunk/high/pregnant as long as possible… they’re the ones who live- they’re the ones who kill OTHER people. I do not believe for a second that this POS was trying to protect her sister. I think she joined in the fun, and now just feels pouty because she got caught, and because life’s just not fair to her. Sniff.

I agree with Glory. Heather’s mother has a LOT to answer for in this situation. WTF was she thinking?!? This girl was 14 fucking years old with a live-in POS boyfriend. I just can’t understand what kind of mother would allow that shit to happen. I would never in a million years let my daughter do that shit. Not that she would ever want to. Hell, my boys didn’t even subject me or their sister to bringing their girlfriends home and sleeping in the same bed in my house. That shit just isn’t right. See what it leads to?
al i have to say is glorybug sounds real mature. the mom is in jail what does that tell you!! Some people seem to have real trouble understanding what the word ‘Mature’ means.
Having a live-in boyfriend at age 14, whether your loser mom allows you to or not, does not qualify as ‘mature’. It does not qualify as being ‘grown-up’.
Being mature and ‘grown-up’ means that you are able to determine when it would be in your best interest, and other people’s, to just say NO. To be able to keep your legs crossed around abusive people, and to everyone else until you’re at least legally allowed to have sex. And even then, not doing it because having a baby with no daddy will fuck up your education and earning ability.
This POS girl was NOT ‘grown-up’.
And, she most certainly did not ‘raise’ 3 kids, or even take care of or babysit those kids. Because, when you are mature and grown up, and are raising/taking care of/babysitting children, expecially siblings, you don’t let your POS fuckbuddy leech kill them. You can’t have it both ways. She either ‘grew up fast’ and was ‘raising’ her siblings, or she was a spoiled brat child with no responsibility, with less maturity than most 12 year olds who babysit. If she’s all that mature, nobody should have a problem letting her pay for her massive fuckup in an adult prison. For an adult-length term.
Mature also means taking responsibility for your own actions, and not making excuses for being self-absorbed and cruel. It also means not making excuses for other people when they very clearly have done some serious evil.

There are some interesting comments on other blogs about this case…. people who allegedly know this ‘family’.
Not too many people were complimentary about Dana’s mothering skills. Which might have been lacking, since she is now 30, and her oldest child is 16. That would make her about 13 when she got knocked up the first time, right? And she learned her lesson. Oh, wait, no she didn’t, unless you consider having 6 children by 4 fathers by the age of 28 to be very smart.
Gossipy things being said are that Dana was collecting welfare the whole time, and was only ‘working’ at the bar because it was a hangout for meth heads, and she allegedly has had a little problem with that, as well as the drinking that caused her to neglect and leave her children alone a couple of years ago… which is what she’s recently been arrested for.
At the time of Zoe’s death, she was living with her boyfriend, her daughter and her POS boyfriend, as well as Zoe and the twins. They say Dana’s sister is an even worse mom. Not sure how that’s possible, but someone claiming to be Dana’s mother said she was an uncontrollable teen.
Nobody had much nice to say about Zoe’s biodad, whom they claim was a dead-beat who hadn’t really been looking for her. The story being that more likely Dana had been after him for child support. They also claim his mother was actually caring for Zoe’s older sister, and not by him as he claimed.
Just thought I’d share a little of what other people who claim to know this family is saying.

Dee- While there are a couple of people I’d like to get an apology from in my lifetime, neither you nor anyone else here, or on the internets at all, are on that list.
But, I do thank you for the gesture. I certainly do get angry also. I just try to focus it. When my youngest son broke the laptop Saturday, my oldest asked why I hadn’t gotten mad at him. I told him that I like to save my anger for more important things. I’m sure he got an earful the next day when the neighbor behind me (the one I and all the other neighbors have repeatedly called the Sheriff and CPS on for beating on his stepson) was taking pictures of my cats, and threatening that he was going to pay me back by harming them. I’m sure my language wasn’t the most pleasant.
So, the anger or language doesn’t bother me- I’d just like it directed at people who harm children, at-risk adults, and animals. People who deserve it. I am well aware that some people don’t like how I express that, or that I for some reason think that giving personal anecdotes may make my point clearer for some, and some may find me appearing ‘better than all-thous’. That’s ust my style, and criticism for that does not bother me. I’d just like the hate directed in a way that will help someone else.
I’m not sure why it would matter what my beliefs are regarding a god. But- I was raised by BAC missionaries. From 6-16, every single day was spent praying, reading and memorizing the bible, attending bible-studies before and after school, and attending church functions. I got a whole lot of BAC packed into those 10 years. Once I moved out and was allowed to investigate things other than BAC, I made my own personal choices, which I keep to myself. I can say that I do respect people of any religion who have looked inside themselves and made choices rather than blindly taking on whichever religion looks the best. And people who choose to have none.
I look at it this way- do I have the power to send people to hell? Obviously not. I can’t even send them to jail. Do I think people should be judgemental, and shun, attempt to legally punish, and rant about people they feel have morally overstepped decent boundaries? Yes. Should they give their opinion about whether nasty people should go to hell? Yes.
But I’m sane enough to realize that all us hell-voters here have our ‘chads hanging’, and won’t be tallied up for the big vote.
No harm done, Dee. You show some righteous anger. I’d like to see it directed towards people who cause real harm, and not just people like me who irritate you, lol.

first of all i will not defend heather or lamar for any reason it is clear that they messed up big time and there is no reason to try and deny it but will you please just for one second put yourself in her family’s shoes? imagine yourself sitting there with your kids playing or just living your life like usual and you get a phone call saying that a little girl that you have taken care of and your child was good friends with has just died and one of the people responsible just so happenes to be your daughter, step daughter, grand daughter or neice. i used to hold heather and listen to her cry i have laughed with heather i have cried with her i have sang and danced with her i love that girl with all of my heart i have put food in her stomach and cloths on her back on the other hand i loved and still love zoe also i have taken care of her too and not to mention my son was very close to her but he is heathers brother and it kills him when he hears bad things about his sister so can you please tell me what everyone who loves her is supposed to do when we get on and see this stuff do you really expect us to stay calm and quiet? i don’t blame any of you for being angry about what happened to be honest i am angry myself but what would you do if you were in her familys situation? would you stop loving her and hoping the best or would you love her past the hell she is in no matter what and stick by her side? please if anyone can answer these questions i am up for suggestions

A 17-year-old accused of body-slamming 7-year-old Zoe Garcia and causing her death last year faces up to 48 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in Weld County District Court today.
Lamar Roberts pleaded guilty to child abuse — knowingly/recklessly causing death, said Weld County District Attorney spokeswoman Jennifer Finch.
Heather Trujillo, also 17, pleaded guilty for her role in Zoe’s death. Trujillo — Zoe’s sister — pleaded guilty in May to child abuse — negligently causing death. Her sentence was suspended on the condition she successfully complete six years in Colorado’s Youth Offender System.
Police said Zoe was kicked and body-slammed by Roberts before she finally passed out at her home in
Zoe Garcia died in Dec. 2007. (Special to the Post)Evans last December. She was in the care of Roberts and Trujillo.
Zoe later died from blunt force trauma. Roberts will be sentenced Jan. 16.
Six years… Well, I’m sure she will come out of the youthful offender program a well-rounded adult who would never, ever arm another human being.

Relative, I have followed this tragic case and from an objective point of view there seems to be plenty of evidence that Heather was not an angel as you are trying to make out especially when it came to physically abusing Zoe. Lamar got less than he deserved (and will get plenty more from his numerous boyfriends in jail) but on the evidence of countless crimes of child abuse documented by a number of government agencies and the police interviews both Dana and Heather have got off extremely lightly. I dont wish the death penalty on these three as it would not inflict anywhere near enough pain on these three worthless pieces of crap. Hopefully they will burn in Hell and I can be there to fan the flames.
