Kyle Bormann
19-year-old Kyle Bormann is a perfectly well-adjusted, normal, quiet Midwestern kid.
Originally from Dell Rapids, South Dakota, Kyle Bormann was nearly a straight-A student who nobody had any bad feelings about. Kyle Bormann spent three and a half years at Dell Rapids High School before transferring to Wessington Springs High School (also in South Dakota) in the middle of his senior year.
Not widely known was that Kyle Bormann had been charged with a few crimes back home. According to our criminal background check, South Dakota criminal records show that Kyle Bormann has been charged with crimes ranging from traffic violations to minor in possession to drug possession, although the drug possession charge was reduced.
Kyle Bormann was sentenced in Brookings County in July of 2007 after he pled guilty to a charge of ingesting intoxicants. According to reports, an officer patrolling near a motel in the area spotted Kyle Bormann “acting suspiciously” and when the officer tried to talk to Kyle to find out what was going on, Kyle ran off.
Kyle Bormann didn’t run fast enough, because the officer caught up to him and immediately smelled alcohol on Bormann, along with the distinct stench of marijuana.
One of the conditions of Kyle Bormann’s sentencing was that he had to stay out of trouble with the law until July of 2008.
Sadly, he didn’t.
This is 21-year-old Brittany Williams, a student at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, studying to become a nurse. She was attending UNO with the assistance of a scholarship that is awarded to students who display exceptional promise but who aren’t on the best financial footing.
She was a good person.
On the 20th of January, 2008 at about 8:40 in the evening, Brittany Williams was at the Kentucky Fried Chicken-Long John Silver’s Seafood combination restaurant in Southeast Omaha – a predominantly African-American part of town.
At that moment, Kyle Bormann was between 100 and 200 yards away, sitting in his car, a white 1996 Chrysler Sebring. Kyle Bormann was dressed in hunter’s camouflage fatigues and had with him his pride and joy, a Winchester model 670a rifle, chambered for a .243 cartridge, complete with a hunting scope. Kyle Bormann was an avid hunter, much like Robert Hawkins, another guy in Omaha with a gun and an attitude. Frankly, it’s looking like there is more and more reason for people who live in Omaha to get a criminal background check on their friends and neighbors, because Omaha’s not coming across as all that stable recently.
Kyle Bormann chose that time to pull the trigger of his rifle, which discharged and sent a bullet into Brittany Williams’s body. Brittany Williams responded to the shot much like the deer that Kyle Bormann hunted on a regular basis, falling to the ground and dying before paramedics could arrive.
Police arrived on the scene shortly, as that part of Omaha is usually crawling with cops who are experienced with the gunfire that regularly erupts in North Omaha.
For some reason, Kyle Bormann didn’t leave the area after killing his prey. He stuck around until the police had put up crime-scene tape. Once that was up, Kyle Bormann hit the gas and drove through the tape, off into the night.
The police followed, of course, and after a short chase which ended with Kyle Bormann running from the Sebring, throwing down his rifle, and trying to hide from his pursuers.
Didn’t work.
So, to sum up the evidence against Kyle Bormann: he was arrested in full hunter’s regalia, with a rifle that matched the bullet fired into Brittany Williams, after driving through the crime-scene tape and leading officers on a short chase.
How much more evidence do you need, really?
Kyle Bormann has been charged with first-degree murder.
Authorities are still investigating why Kyle Bormann did it, but suspect there was a possible racial motive.
Kyle Bormann’s family has issued a statement that is sensitive and understanding and will hopefully avoid embarrassing themselves on the People You’ll See In Hell comment threads, unlike someone else’s family.
On behalf of the entire Bormann family, we would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Brittany Williams,” an e-mail to the station said. “We do not understand why this happened, as we are still trying to figure it out for ourselves. We would also like to extend our sincerest apologies and regrets. We understand that there are absolutely no words that can change what happened in this tragic event and would like Brittany’s family to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers every hour of every day.
Update:
On the 25th of September, 2008, a jury convicted Kyle Bormann of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Brittany Williams.
The prosecutors were hoping to get a first-degree murder conviction. According to Douglas County attorney Don Kleine:

Kyle Bormann has a sentencing hearing scheduled for the 2nd of December, 2008. He could possibly be given a prison sentence ranging from a minimum of 21 years to a maximum of life.
According to Douglas County public defender Tom Riley:
He probably hasn’t slept in the last three weeks. I don’t know if he will tonight, either.
No word on whether or not anyone cares if Kyle Bormann gets any sleep at all.

I am actually appalled as much as anyone else. Though I do not know Kyle, I did know his family and went to school with his older sisters. There isn’t one ounce of racism in their family from what I’ve seen. They are good people, and you can bet that they are as shocked, horrified, and sorry for this to have happened.

We are all very sad and we don’t understand what happened. Kyle was always fun to be around. I hope one day we can all understand what happened and why! It might really mess with some people if they realized that the word Hell actually comes from Norse mythology. Early Christians used either the Jewish Sheol or the Greek Hades. In latin it’s Infernus or Inferno. Funny since Jews don’t believe Hell is a fiery place, but instead it’s an absent nothingness in torment because you are absent from God’s sight and thus know you are meaningless and tastes of ash.

This is why modern Bible translations are completely evicting that word from the Old Testament! Now, why would any Bible translation seek to remove a word unless it did not belong there in the first place? But, unfamiliar to the Christian majority, the word “hell,” in the entire Bible was actually translated from four unique words: Sheol, Gehenna (a valley in Jerusalem used for dumping refuse), Hades, and Tartarus. Below are a few charts detailing these words to demonstrate how they were translated. For anyone new to the Bible, the NIV stands for New International Version, one of the most popular modern Bibles used in churches worldwide.
The King James translators rendered the Hebrew word sheol as “the grave” 31 times, but, they translated it as “hell” 31 times. The Hebrews believed that everyone – good or bad, great or small – goes to sheol when they die. This form of doctrine influenced translating infused these pagan myths into Bible causing these anomalies as evidenced in the King James Version.:

I applaud half of your efforts to play peacemaker but I attack your actual sentiment which is to set aside judgment for a religious quote.
We’re human beings and we have to make of this world what we can. We have a lot of gray decisions we have to make, but this is not a gray decision and this has absolutely nothing to do with race.
Someone who kills another human being is insane. They are a monster. We have to get rid of them and we have to penalize the attitude and circumstances that produce monsters, or guess what? We get more monsters.
So someone made up hell. The original Old testament didn’t have a hell. We combined Pagan and a host of other beliefs together to describe a horrible, evil place you don’t want to go because it makes a great reinforcement for morality. We bolted it onto religion and we threatened people with it to get a handle on evil.
It has failed a bit here and there, but it’s also kept quite a few bad things at bay.
As to casting stones, another poster on another thread mentioned that we have a Constitutional right to cast stones. You have a Constitutional right to tell us to play nice and cast stones, but you should probably come from a slightly more reasonable and less stale position. Something you can honestly support not just with your faith, which I admire and have some on my own, but with a clear understanding of where we as a people have had to come.

I feel horrible for all of you people in the world that have nothing better to do with your time but HATE! It is a horrible thing that happened. But once again for those of us who knew Kyle and saw him in the halls at school he was a great loving kid who everyone got along with. He had many friends and comes from a WONDERFUL family. However, like many kids his age do, he got caught up with the wrong group and into drugs. Unless you have been on drugs yourself you dont know how your body responds to them. Everybody responds differently on drugs. This does not make it ok for what he did. But what a horrible feeling for all of the people who knew the good kid behind the drugs. How do we know he wasnt hallucinating on drugs and happened to have his gun in his car because he loved to hunt. It happened he was at the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong things and now this poor young man at the age of 19 had to live the rest of his life in jail. He will never have kids or a family of his own and neither will the poor beautiful girl affected by this aweful thing. I pray for God to forgive Kyle for making bad chemically induced decisions. I also pray that God brings comfort to all of his wonderful family and friends that are hurting for the loss of their friend. I also pray that God brings comfort to the poor family and friends of Brittany. Luckily her family are CHRISTIANS who grew up learning not to hate and have already announced their forgiveness for what Kyle has done. No Haley, you aren’t reading God’s word. God never mentions the word Hell. It’s not in his language, it’s not in Christ’s and it was never written by any of his apostles.
Exactly zero mentions of HELL. HEL was a Norse goddess, daughter of Loki who was given dominion over the world of HEL, which was in parallel of the land of giants(Jotanheim) and the land of Midgard. The latin (roman word) for burial was infernus, because they often burned their dead because of limited tomb space. When Jerome translated the word Sheol to make the Vulgate, he used that word so Romans could understand the religion their Emperor Constantine was going to make them a party to.
Hell is a word that comes from another language, from other connotations and from interpretations by human beings. When there was an inquisition and torture chambers in the basements of a host of lords and ladies across the land, Hell was torture because it was something people could understand. After seeing the images of the Holocaust, we’ve added to and refined our image of Hell to include a host of other details.
Your bible is flawed. Doubt me? Learn Hebrew and read the Torah, learn Latin and read the Vulgate of Jerome, learn Greek, Aramaic and a host of other languages that the words were originally written in.

Most biblical scholars think this is in reference to when God will turn the Dead sea into a literal lake of fire to cast the evil into during the last days.
Revelation 20:14 supports this reading:
“Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”
Since Hades here is a direct translation of the Greek, and not merely a mention of Sheol, we are led to understand that this lake of fire will be where those who are dead will be cast into after the day of judgment which has not yet occurred.
The reverend Phelps, and a few others claim and conflate these entities and suggest that this Hell is instant, but Catholic dogma even suggests that Purgatory lies beyond the veil until the day of judgment and that Hell is a place to come.
Christ even talks about this place in other words and specifically mentions that it is a time to come. That Gehenna and “Hell” as it’s translated from “the furnace” are places to come.

Learn something in this life. There are monsters in this world, who rape, murder, and kill. The only thing that keeps them even marginally at bay is fear of consequences. They don’t want to go to jail, they don’t want to die and some don’t want to be in hell. They avoid committing crimes.

When I quote from any other book I am very careful to make sure I am quoting the author correctly. The bible should be no different.

Wow Brittany, good question. I like to think that the evidence of faith supports the existence of a Heaven. God separated the Earth from the Heavens according to Genesis, suggesting there are in fact multiple Heavens. Christ says he’s going forward to make a place for us with our father. Abraham’s covenant made a place under his heart for the souls of his progeny to be carried until the time of a savior. Jews believe in a Guf (nmangled spelling, but I can’t type the right characters for it on an American Standard keyboard) where God holds the souls yet to be. There’s supposedly a place for Angels, and perhaps a different place called the Kingdom of god, which may in fact have provinces.
On top of all of this, there’s supposed to be a banquet, held in the sky on Earth, where the faithful will be placed at the head of all tables.
In as simple a way as I can respond… Given a detailed reading of the sources at hand I cannot give you a definitive answer. Keep God’s most important commandment, come to God through Christ, and you’re supposed to get what God promised.

I had the pleasure of living across the dorm hall from Kyle. I talked to him everyday. We played halo all the time, we smoked and drank alot together and with our other friends in the hall….By the way 2 of those friends happened to be African American. hmmm…..im pretty sure that puts some holes in all your racist babble but of course some dumbass with pride will still try to turn this freak occurance into some kind of race war, and to what benefit? The Kyle i knew was a good kid. Period. In fact, some of the bad choices he made relating to chemicals were part my fault because of our similar interests in getting messed up. After first semester, we both got worse into the shit we were doing to the point of failing all our classes and owing money to our best friends.
Im not saying I condone or understand why he did this, but I understood that he was pushing all his friends away when he moved back to Omaha and was probably still using. If any of you realize what depression resulting from drugs use can do to a persons mind you should know that he wasnt himself when he did this. My cousin killed himself two and a half years ago trying to overcome his meth addiction. He was a state-track record breaker out of Souix Falls Orgorman with a track-scholarship. Not the type you’d think to kill themselves huh?
In my complete honest opinion, I think Kyle was alone and extremely depressed with some sort of death in mind. I believe he could have killed anyone in the area he was in that night, but his true intentions might possibly have been for the authorities to do something as a result. Why else would he drive through the caution tape and give chase? Police are forced to draw guns on anyone who evades them….and if they feel threatened….they may use them. Remind you that this is pure speculation, but I think he may have wanted them to kill him and get the attention of someone who perhaps had not given him very much.
Im truly sorry for Brittany and her family, but im also sorry for Kyle and all his friends and family who truly know him.

Jason- Mythology is one of my favourite topics/studies. So much so that I named both my boys after Greek mythological beings. It is enjoyable to read someone who has as much knowledge about this whole topic as you do.
I am sure in a large part, my interest in mythology was sparked by my intensive BAC indoctrination. It helps that my a-dad is a missionary, an architect, and a great reader and speaker. His interest, of course, is xianity, Hebrew history, politics and end-times. It helps that he has learned Hebrew and a few other languages in his studies/lectures.
It’s nice to have a little history thrown in with all the ‘opinions’ once in a while.
I have never been able to ascertain any one specific place that could be called ‘Heaven’ in the bible. I do know that I know a lot of nasty, mean and dishonest people that are sure they are going to be there- so I’m not so sure I’d even want to be there with them. Being here with them is bad enough. Besides, I pretty much decided there would be no point in trying to get to heaven when I was about 7 and asked my a-mom if animals went to heaven. She said of course not, because they have no souls. I thought that was pretty fucked, because it’s obvious that animals do have souls even if they have different consciousnesses than us. Plus, what kind of god would keep animals out of heaven, anyway?
Brittany- I can’t recall there ever being any specific verse that claims that gay people will not go to heaven. Some may make the point that it could say that if you repent and stop being that way, then you as well as all other sinners get a fair chance at heaven. The problem as I’ve seen it is that the word homosexual is a mistranslation of the word originally used in the bible. As far as I can tell, the real sin is if a man lies with another man as he would with a woman. Being that women are so lowly, and all. It was more that the sin was to be like a woman. As far as I can tell, there is no specific reference to lesbians at all. There isn’t even anything agaisnt masturbation (or onanism)- it’s a twisting of the sin of masturbating rather than impregnating your dead brother’s wife, as the customs dictated. Jayni- I think the concept of racism gets even more pushed out of shape just by the paranoia of the possibility of racism.
For example, I also was almost beat up on a bus by a group of about 7 black girls- as an adult. I guess I was absent-mindledly looking at them, and they took offense, ordering me to not look at them or I’d get my ass kicked. Later, after thinking, I realised I’d actually been looking at one of the girls in particular, and it was because she was very pretty. It’s just human nature to notice attractive people. I just wasn’t aware that I’d been doing it.

First of all my dear, Kelsey is no longer his girlfriend. The night the “accident” happened, he was going to go see her and she even stated on here that she wasn’t dating him, that they were just really good “friends.” One thing you have to understand though is that you are his friend and of course you are going to forgive him. This annoys me greatly. I may be ‘isolated’. My only personal experience (not stranger-related, which has not always been positive) with black people (among the myriad of races I know and/or belong to) has been positive. Friends of the family, neighbors, my sister’s OB/GYN, my family doctor, schoolmates in college. I know from personal experience that the word ‘nigga’ is NOT a part of their vocabulary. Thankfully so.
I wish that people could see that talking shit about their own race, or using negative terms as an ‘affectionate’ greeting is actually degrading and offensive. This is not race-specific. I also am disgusted by the affectionate use of the word ‘bitch’ and ‘Ho’ by women towards women. Negative words are negative, no matter how you want to pretend to use them.
My gut feeling is that this was not a racist-motivated killing. Nothing against ugly girls, but the girl he chose to blast away was obviously very pretty. I think it’s more likely he had intense anger he did not know how to cope with, and he chose to act out in a ’sexist’ way (rather than racist), in that he killed someone who obviously would never have chosen to date him or give him the time of day.
Go figure. Women are evil that way. They generally (except for baby-killer lovers) tend to avoid men who have made nothing of their life, and are just basically negative people. We don’t understand, nor do I think we will ever know what was going through Kyle’s mind that night. I knew him to be a hard-working teenager. A boy. Being a hunter doesn’t make you a bad person. If anything, it teaches you to respect the animals you are harvesting. It doesn’t make one prone to random killing. He went to college, and he changed. Even in 1/2 a year, it was obvious he was into things that he should not have been. I don’t know why his family did not intervene and get him treatment. I’m sure he was in a drug-induced state. No that does not mean I think he should get away with Britney’s murder, which I am sure he won’t. Yet he has to live with taking a human life, and that is nothing like shooting a pheasant or a deer. It is very sad to see not one, but two young lives snuffed out. For it was not just Britney’s life that ended that night, Kyle’s did too. The justice system will decide how Kyle’s life on earth will play out. As for hell…..We humans don’t decide that. God, Allah, whatever you want to call the Higher Power, will decide Kyle Bormann’s fate in the next life.

Furthermore, there have only been three deaths by “rifles” in 2007, although a .22 is considered a varmint gun, and pretty much everyone and their dog has one in South Dakota. The rest have been with handguns. Kyle Bormann was whacked out on drugs and depressed. That doesn’t translate into he shouldn’t go to jail…But please don’t lump him into hunters who are respectful of their firearms and teach gun safety. Being able to hunt doesn’t give one a license to kill everything, nor does it demoralize you. Otherwise all our ancestors were terribly murderous people. Few times in our lives are we ever given so clear a black and white decision as to who to stand by and who to stand against, and it is truly a defining point in character and maturity to know that Kyle was absolutely responsible for all of his actions and should be punished for them. He is a discredit to his family, the tools he turned into weapons (gun, truck, etc), his race(whatever that may actually be), his species(Homo Sapiens), his kingdom(Animal), and his place in this world (living instead of inert(dead)).
If a little of this rubs off on the people he associated with, perhaps the act of doing something to wash it off will do some good in this world. Perhaps all of these maligned hunters can do a fund raiser for Britney’s family to show it has nothing to do with being a hunter that makes you into a monster.
There’s no reason to be a devil’s advocate in this case. Kyle is bad, was bad, and pretty much needs to be shunned. Please: Don’t raise a finger to help him. Don’t defend him. Don’t bother trying to toss any white paint here or there to get a few shades of gray–there isn’t enough in the world and hopefully there never will be.

I love how NRA people like to get their jabs in. I live in California, Pop/37 Milion. South Dakota’s Pop is 776 hundred thousand. Yet with that big of a disparity of population density, CA (ranking #30) is only higher than SD (ranking #49) by 1.9 firearm homicides per 100k people. Less than 2 people per 100k difference.
On the sexcrimes front, SD doesn’t fare so well. They rank #6, with CA trailing at #37 for forcible rape. This forcible rape category does not include Statutory Rape. Unless rapists in SD are just generally bigger and stronger than rapists in CA, I assume they are using a weapon as part of that ‘force’. Couldn’t be guns, now, could it? Could it be that SD doesn’t use their guns so much for murdering people as they do for raping people? BTW, SD also has a higher percentage of registered sex offenders per capita than CA… .292 per 100k vs .174 per 100k.

Kyle Bormann most likely was suffering from an attachment disorder misdiagnosed as a mental disorder, and incorrectly prescribed medication because of it. Many people who are incorrectly rxd stop taking their meds because they are not solving the problem. It makes people feel better to blame this murder on someone who stopped taking their meds, as if continuing them would have prevented it. It’s more likely the junkie-withdrawals associated with going cold-turkey on powerful but incorrectly rxd meds was a major contribution- but even that is probably not the major underlying cause.
People also like to blame drugs on these kinds of murders, rather than human will/evilness. They overlook one important factor- drugs do NOT change a person’s real core personality. They do break down walls and boundaries that then enable people to do things they might not have chosen to do before, but they do not FORCE people to do them. Anyone who purposefully kills someone else quite obviously had it in them to be capable of doing that before… drugs just nudges them closer to the edge of doing it.

I know I wouldn’t support a brother or anyone that was a friend for a fact. My boyfriends little brother killed his father in Brookings, South Dakota back in August. Not many of the people in the family support Brandon Brody for doing this. He was a troubled child and so was his father.

Friend- you misjudge people yourself-
I have in fact, turned my back on my best friend of 9 years this last August. She was living with and engaged to one of my best friends.
She ended up cheating on him, moving out suddenly, and marrying some new guy in less than 3 weeks.
I would never have imagined her doing that in a million years. She devastated my friend, left him with all the debt as well as her pets.
I don’t know why she did what she did. It does not match the best friend/sister I had for 9 years. The bottom line is, it doesn’t matter why. I don’t respect her for what she did, I don’t condone what she did, and I generally try to make a habit of not being friends with people who do those things.
She didn’t kill anyone, but I’m still out a friend. So stop throwing around stupid statements implying that anyone else besides YOU would support/forgive people who do things that you do not approve of. My friend is not surprised that we can’t be friends anymore, because I AM consistent, and she’s known for 9 years how I feel about people who do the things she did. She made a choice. Her choice hurt several people. Not suprisingly, her ex-fiance isn’t any more forgiving about her behaviour than I am.
It is not healthy to have relationships with people that do things you feel are destructive, selfish, or harmful to other people or yourself.
I do not have a martyr complex, and I do not feel guilty about choosing who I think is an appropriate person for me or my children to have relationships with. People who kill, abuse, molest, and yes…cheat— they are not on my list.

I agree with Glory and Jason about not “supporting” a murderer, rapist, etc. I have never had to experience this type of thing personally, but I’m pretty sure I couldn’t stand by someone who could harm another human being. I always told my boys if they ever went to jail for something stupid, ie. drunk driving, drugs..they would just have to sit there because I was not about to fork over hundreds of dollars to get them out. Thank goodness none of them have ever been to jail. It would be hard for me to let them sit there, but that’s where the term “tough love” comes from. It is very difficult for anyone to love someone who is doing drugs, if not impossible. Because their drug use affects more people than just themselves. It’s also hard to be around drug addicts, because it’s not pleasant, and anyone who still likes them and hangs around with them is likely involved with and sharing the drug of choice with them.
People who do not do drugs can’t usually tolerate being around people who do. Using drugs is a lifestyle that only other drug users can appreciate. You would be better able to experience this firsthand if you’d put the crack pipe down, and take your drug-goggles off.

I guess you would call me a lurker. I have been coming to this site regularly for the past year or so but I leave the posting and writing stories up to the wife. I do feel it necessary t o voice my opinion here though. While I may find blatant racism to be counterproductive in everyday life, that does not mean I do not see it every day and from a great number of people that even hold they to be unbiased and educated. It seems ok for blacks to be racist and call whites crackas and honkies, but if a white is to even voice a dislike over what a black does the first thing someone does is yells racism. Racism is alive and strong in our society, and it’s not strictly perpetrated by white people. Now I have seen where people say that blacks are more likely to commit crimes than any other race of people. Now this may be unpleasant to some of you but the facts don’t lie. On this site we get a hodgepodge of every vile and disgusting thing that society can throw at us but that still does not change the fact that what some call racism and others call realism is just a perception based mostly on an unpleasant truths. Some of you may say that stereotypes have no place in society and I say that they have a base in truth just like many things do. You cannot argue the facts that cities with a high percentage of blacks seem to be also the most dangerous cities. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not throwing everyone of a certain race all in one group like many of the racists do. I guess an easy analogy would be to say if someone told you that there was a cage with a hundred tigers in it but only 13 of them were likely to kill and eat you would you still stick your arm through the bars to pet the animal, no most would not. It’s funny how white people almost never get the death penalty for doing some of the worst crimes in the US. In Texas right now there are men on death row for selling crack cocaine, which shows that racism still exist and will never go away no matter how much we try to sugar coat it. He should be killed the same way this beautiful black sister was killed. It’s crazy how a person on death row gets to die by simply being shot with a needle when they have sometimes tortured their victims to death. “An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth” that’s how I see it…..and I don’t even believe in the death penalty in most cases.

Frank Moore was originally arrested on a cocaine selling charge but he killed two people with an illegal firearm outside of a San Antonio club. He was executed on January 21st 2009, because his claim that killing someone with an illegal firearm was in fact self-defense.
1. He was a convicted felon who sold Cocaine so should never have had a gun
2. The altercation he had with the two men beforehand was a drug deal gone bad.
3. The defense of private property in self defense does not cover criminal gains.
These were the findings of a jury and the lower appeals courts. The Supreme Court refused to hear his case. Casting this as the reasonable argument that Crack Cocaine offenders are prosecuted more heavily than pure cocaine users, is incorrect since the key aspects in this case are murder, not the drug the convicted murderer chose to use. He was on death row because he was a murderer. He chose to be a murderer because of his association with Crack Cocaine. Had he been a law abiding citizen or successfully regained his right to own a firearm, and been protecting himself or his legal property from harm when he shot both men in Texas that night, he’d have been within his rights and cleared of all charges by a jury of his peers.
The second, oft-cited death-row inmate is Dominique Green, written about in Thomas Cahill’s book A Saint on Death Row. Green was a burglar gone bad, who killed one of his burglary victims trying to get money for drugs. It was after his conviction, while awaiting the death penalty, that Green began to convince his fellow death row inmates to forgive those who convicted them, the families of their victims and seek peace with their actions and deeds. These are noble things, but I disagree with Desmond Tutu, who believes these actions should end the requirement for the death penalty in his proceedings and others. This forgiveness is brotherly, and because he claimed his crime, apologized sincerely and sought forgiveness reasonably, I actually hope he found peace with his creator and salvation. That said, I believe his life was reasonably forfeit, I believe in the death penalty, and I think his death was justifiable and reasonable.
There are huge exceptions to this policy. You argument can hold water, in that Black men are executed more often than white men, but not that the justice system is merely racially charged. While race plays a part, I believe it’s fairly easy to prove that money plays a larger part. With an expensive defense, prosecution and judges involved in the process are more likely to fear the repercussions of their actions and tread more carefully. With an expensive defense, any mistake made on the part of the prosecution is more likely to result in freedom. Prosecutors are often good natured men and women who choose the life because it’s hard work that needs doing, but sometimes they face so many pressures that they fail their clients(the people of the United States) and make mistakes.
To the crack versus cocaine debate, the largest issue here is the cascade of problems caused by the sale and handling of these drugs. Crack is a drug of convenience, and as such its impact on a community and its “surprising” relationship to murders has made the population less than accepting of its users, dealers and abusers. Cocaine related murders are just as bad, but they don’t have the added stigma of Crack cocaine, which has been so sensationalized by popular media. I agree that the criminalization should be a dispassionate comparison of quantity, but do not fault juries for equating Crack with negative sentiments.
In short, while I decry your brother’s execution and do not yet know enough details about his murder, I will research what I can and offer you a response on it. To merely call the judicial system racially motivated fails to realize what the judicial system really is. A system that can be refreshed through honest and reasonable participation. If the system is broken due to race, the solution is to repair it, not to merely decry the racial aspect of it while people who are black and white kill people. The call should be to insure that men and women who kill people continue to be removed from the streets, and in many cases are executed so they can never harm another person.

Well Steve, let me be the first to say fuck your brother, fuck your brother’s friend, and while I’m at it, fuck you too. If they did what Kyle did, I’d be dumping on them the same way I dumped on Kyle. Anyone who drinks so much that they black out and murder someone deserves everything they get. You want to know why, tough guy? Because everyone knows what can happen if you drink yourself into a blackout. If someone makes a choice to drink and drink and drink until they blackout, and wake up in a jail cell with a murder beef around their neck, well, whose fault is that, and who should face the consequences?
Now what that has to do with Kyle Borman is anybody’s guess. Are we supposed to excuse what he did, just because he fucked himself up with drugs? Well, I did a lot of drugs in my lifetime – I’m 50-years-old and have only been clean about 7 years – and I id some shitty things too, and you know what. No one ever gave me a break, I had to accept responsibility for everything I did. And that’s exactly the way it should have been.
