John R. Riems
This here fella is John Riems, a 49-year-old night-side nurse who has worked at over 10 nursing homes in the state of Ohio in the last 20 or so years – most recently at the Concord Care and Rehabilitation Center.
According to 47-year-old Cynthia Wilson, a nursing aide who has worked with John Riems for most of those years at many of the same nursing homes that John Riems worked at, John isn’t a very good nurse at all.
John Riems is a pretty bad nurse, actually.
Good nurse – patients enjoy their visits and want the nurse in their room to deliver medications.
Bad nurse (John Riems) – patients really don’t want to see the nurse at all, and wish someone – anyone – else would take their place
Cynthia Wilson says:
We’ve had several residents, they don’t want him touching them, they don’t want him in their room. A lot of them would refuse their meds just to keep him out of their room.
Good nurse – Goes in and out of patients rooms when needed. Rarely, if ever stays in a room for more than 20 minutes. Never closes a door unless there is another medical practitioner present.
Bad nurse (John Riems) – would regularly go into patients’ rooms by himself when there was no good reason to do so and close the door behind him. John Riems would stay for up to an hour.
According to Cynthia Wilson’s police statement:
We don’t know what he’s doing in the room with the doors shut so long. I’ve questioned him: ‘John, why are you in the room so long?’ He would tell us all, ‘This is none of your business.’
Good nurse – When stressed out, for whatever reason, maintains a strong control over their temper, and never displays angry behavior in front of a patient.
Bad nurse (John Riems) – Frequently swore at and verbally abused patients. John Riems would hit walls and medical carts and throw papers on the floor when frustrated.
Good nurse – rarely, if ever, rapes or sexually abuses patients.
Bad nurse (John Riems) – rapes and sexually abuses more than 100 patients since he started nursing, more than he can really remember.
Yeah, it’s safe to say that John Riems falls squarely into the “bad nurse” category, especially after he confessed to raping a 55-year-old blind and partially paralyzed man who was bedridden and unable to do anything to prevent his being raped.
While being interviewed by police, John Riems freely told the investigators that he had sexually abused about 100 patients under his care since he started nursing work in 1985. John Riems also claimed that since he’d raped so many convalescent patients, he could really only remember specific information about 25 or so of them.
Investigators are tracking down John Riems’ previous employers and patients. Many of his patients are dead, and several of the nursing homes he worked at are currently closed.
Olivia Burns, another nurse who has worked with John Riems, has told the media that she repeatedly warned supervisory staff that John Riems regularly verbally abused patients and was possibly physically abusing them as well. Olivia Burns stated that she was surprised that nothing wasn’t ever done by supervisory staff. Olivia resigned on the 29th of January, 2008 after hearing of John Riems’ arrest.
Cynthia Wilson has also mentioned that she’s not sure why nothing ever became of the allegations she and many other employees made against John Riems:
If we’re complaining about it, his record shouldn’t be clean. There should be a record in his chart showing what he’s doing. But nothing. Nothing. I don’t understand it.
According to the Ohio state Board of Nursing, neither John Riems or the Concord Care and Rehabilitation Center have been disciplined by the board. The state board refuses to release any information about previous complaints by employers or patients against John Riems.
Not surprisingly, Concord Care and Rehabilitation Center has been rated highly by the Ohio Department of Health regulations over the last few years, with a low grade of 97 and a high grade of 100 if you look at the last 4 years.
Three cheers for the high state of convalescent care in the State of Ohio!
Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray.
Nursing home director Jessica Short has issued a statement to the press. That statement mentioned something about John Riems being fired from Concord Care, along with the insinuation that former employees of Concord Care had made false statements to the media.
John Riems has been charged with rape and gross sexual imposition. There’s a high likelihood that more charges will be forthcoming. That usually happens to serial rapists, among other things.
It’s very easy to forget how vulnerable people are who live in nursing homes and other high-care situations are to predators such as John Riems. Nursing homes are not known for being too choosy in who they hire, and without a doubt there are bad apples floating around out there, caring for people’s mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers who can’t care for themselves.
Update:
A trial date has been set in the case against the night-shift nurse accused of sexually assaulting 14 nursing home residents.
The trial for John R. Riems will start on the 20th of January, 2009 – nearly a year after allegations against Riems first became public.
Riems has been charged with 15 counts of rape, three counts of sexual battery, one count of gross sexual imposition, three counts of patient abuse and one count of felonious sexual penetration.

Now that is just really sick.
This man deserves to fry for what he did.
I hope he gets strapped to a bed and sodomized by bubba!
he’d probably enjoy being raped in prison. someone should just kill him. arewe allowed to say that ??? ;)
There anyway we could include the place he worked at too? Once again, a man who could have been stopped wasn’t because the company didn’t want to look bad. Just look at doctor/nurse serial killers who could have been stopped but weren’t due to similar actions taken like the ones above. Michael Swango, Genene Jones, Donald Harvey, Charles Cullen, Vickie Dawn Jackson etc. These cases show many of the problems in our health care system today.
unfortunately they really don’t get raped in prision any more. they have them in protected instances so it doesn’t happen.
Oh. My. God. This might be the worst one yet.
Oh my god. My grandmother was in a nursing home for a few months a little while before she passed on. Yes, in Ohio.
When you work your advertisements into the articles, it truly cheapens the information you’re presenting and makes your site appear to be extremely unprofessional.
All a background check would do in a situation like this is give relatives a false sense of security, causing them to not be as vigilant as they need to be.
Sick bastard.
Friends, this piece of waste is what a lynch mob is for.
I don’t care what excuse is given for whatever it is that has gone so terribly awry in this animal’s head. This is a no brainer.
As a sidebar, if half of the folks who protest at the drop for causes that have already saturated our collective conciousness would speak up for these poor people who truly have no one to speak for them, living conditions for our elderly and vunerable would be considerably better. Remember everyone, the way Social Security looks, we’ll probably all end up living out our old age in a group home and we’ll wish like hell that we’d fought for reform.
Difficult to believe this has been going on for so long without Riems being caught. Some turned a blind eye.
Regardless, what in the hell is wrong with this guy? I realize the constitution forbids cruel, unusual, and inhumane treatment of prisoners but couldn’t it be argued that we’re using John Riems apparent definition of cruel, unusual, and inhumane treatment of others. There comes a point in time when the punishment needs to fit the crime, when society needs to select an individual to be made an example of and do so as cruelly as the criminal did to his victims.
I totally agree with the advertisment comment. I assume they are sponsors of some sort and you have to plug them but its getting kinda old.
And besides, what good would a background check have done if no one was reporting him, there would be nothing to find out. I also agree with Kdogg, I would be trying to track down everyone who ignored complaints on him and make them accountable. This should’ve been stopped long ago. And his matter of fact attitude when questioned reminds me of BTK, its like he’s proud of what he’s done. This sick bastard should be made to eat his own shit everyday for the rest of his life.
Brittany: there is a lot of sexual predation behind bars, don’t kid yourself. If we have it at the county level, where the average stay is less than 2 years, how bad is it at the pen, where guys spend decades incarcerated, the inmates enjoy a looser environment where there is less supervisory staff present, and supervision is mostly indirect? (As opposed to direct supervision where the admin and I work. When we go to work, we’re in the hole with the thugs for eight hours. Not much will escape us because we are right there with them. Most of the penitentiaries have control room supervision where a block of housing units will have one officer assigned to control and two officers assigned to patrol.)
Obviously this man needs “sensitivity rehabilitation” – a process that puts the perp in the victims’ place. Restraints would simulate a crippled / paralyzed body and once again I am sure that there are plenty of inmates would would be happy to perform the treatment, esp if one of these inmates had a parent or grandparent as one of this POS patients.
Very few people are going to care about this group of elderly – many of them probably do not vote, so they are of little consequence to our elected officials.
And lastly to blame is the privatization of elderly care – profits must be made and another $29 per employee could get “expensive” at places that have a high turn over rate. Not that the state is perfect, but at least the state does not need to make a profit (we’ll cover its losses!)
Once again a POS will most likely get PC (Protective Custody) ordered by the courts… which goes to prove that the GP (General Population) of most prisons have a better moral base than our courts!
Why would any sane person not go to the administration about a nurse who acts so strangely? And if the administration knew about it and did nothing: can you spell lawsuit?
I know there are plenty there, I’m just saying they’re in beyond protective custoday and I don’t agree with that at all. I think they should be allowed to be in the general population.
If it’s any consolation, even in the pc units they occasionally dump a shark in the gold fish bowl. Too bad it doesn’t happen more frequently.
Sick.
Hell is too good for him.
I think he should be put down like a rabid animal, but in a less humane way.
Wow, that is pretty disgusting…I think he really needs some serious help..
Now this is kinda stupid– the article here says that —Good nurse – rarely, if ever, rapes or sexually abuses patients.
When it says rarely it implies that is ok for good nurses to rape as long as it is just “rarely” or occasionally. Of course it should say that Good nurses NEVER rape or sexually abuse patients. How dumb.
Louie — the author of the article was being sarcastic. Of course he doesn’t really think a nurse should ever sexually abuse patients.
This guy must really have some serious problems. Obviously he couldn’t get what he wanted when he was on the outside world. So he has to turn to people that he works with at a nursing home. I just don’t understand this though. How did he get away with this shit for sooo damn long? I worked in a nursing home and I never would have thought anyone would want to do something like that to olderly people. I have always seen them as gentle.
I know for a fact that if my parents/grandparents were in a home with a guy like that, I would be sooo ticked off and hurt.
It is really terrible and it happens more than you hear about. This scumbag is a real coward because he preys on people who are physically weak and vulnerable.
But you know this guy is gonna do some hard time in prison. He will probably be locked up in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. Because as soon as he ventures out of his cell there is going to be someone looking to kill his ass. His life is gonna be hell on earth. Can’t say he don’t deserve everything he gets.
This may sound a little odd but i was very protective of my grandfather after he had a stroke and even took on a job at the nursing home he was at so i could watch over him …so i say put this jackass in a bathtub and then drop a live wire in there…
very very odd…
THAT’S GROSS !
Updated with trial date and charges.
Back in the late 80′s my mother and I lived with Riems. I was probably 2 or 3 and on many a time was molested when my mom was away at work. And many a time tried to kill me. Smothered with a blanket, drowning in scalding water, overdose on benedril . Never went all the way with his attempts. But as my mother found out we left on night while he was at work with nothing but our cloths.
These things I kept hidden deep inside for years, but now I think I should belly up to the bar and tell my story. If not for me , but for thoughs who have no voice against this monster.
If that’s what you think, then you should do it. Write something down, anything, with as much detail as you can remember, and send it to me at editorpysih@comcast.net and I’ll make it into a story as best I can. We could handle it as a follow up to the original John Riems story, so it’ll fit right in with the rest of the articles on the site. It would be my pleasure to help you with this, but only if this is really what you want to do. Personally, I think it’s the right thing to do, and I’ll support you all the way.
I agree. For me, writing has always been a form of therapy. I can say what i feel better on paper than i could ever do in person.
We will support your efforts as much as we can. But as Max said, its your choice.
What a nasty, sick man!
My name is Judy Nuhn , I lived with John Riems . He molested and tortured my son George .He did this horrible action when I worked. I was in the hospital for surgery .HE was the caregiver ,over him for two weeks My son looked pale and had lost weight. He did not like being around anyone. He had marks in unusual places,as if he had been tied upand he had struggled to be free .I asked Mr. Riems why my son looked like that. He tried to joke it off .When I nailed him down he would throw a fit .He was A devil who would brag about how he came from a higher class of people .I took my son to the emergency room ,and he was admitted . His mother ,and aunt taught Nursing at this hospital .All I heard was how lucky I was to be married to this wonderful family .What A good Catholic wealthy environment For my son. When I talked with the Dr. and nursing staff ,they looked at me as if I was crazy, and would walk away When I would see these people latter they would avoid ey e contact. The horror my son endured I did not find out then ,because he had been threatened ,and the fear was his jailer. after I found out about the perversion .The inhuman things that my son suffered I reported Riems to the Ohio State Board OF NURSING. I met face to face with a tall blond ,named Marily , or Mary something only one person handles reports of nursing misconduct. Well as I talked she iced over on me ,you know the look; I had seen it so many times before SHE began to talk and started with the same old song ,Good family, Good ,respectable ,Mom instructor ,I held up my hand to stop these hollow bullshit words .She looked at me and said. You better watch it you will lose your license .And a year latter I did.
Yes I can hear it now….a mob of angry old people….walkers, canes….John Riems’ ass…..no lube….Ahhh there it goes! Anally raped by the same oldsters he molested. And yeah, no lube. Let the friction burn. :)
This guy’s crimes are vile, sick and disgusting. I really don’t know why no one is being taken to task over the cover-up given this ass-hat whilst he was in charge of anyone. Sounds like corruption up the very chain of command in the health care sector.
