  • Carla Poole

Carla PooleThis is 37-year-old Carla Poole.

Carla Poole is a drug user with a number of drug-related convictions, is unemployed, has four children living with her and two kids - twins - who she has previously given up for adoption.

Carla Poole reportedly comes from a close-knit family.

They’re close enough to take in children of other family members when the parents are thrown into jail for whatever the latest crime is that they’ve committed.

That’s a nice thing to do.

Demond ReedThis is four-year-old Demond Reed.

Demond Reed was brought to Minneapolis to visit some relatives over the Christmas season by his dad, 21-year-old Tony Reed.

When Tony Reed was arrested and put in jail at the end of January, he left Demond Reed with Carla Poole, who was Demond’s cousin.

Fair enough. Family takes care of family.

So Carla Poole was taking care of Demond Reed. Feeding him, making sure he got to bed on time and so on.

Then, sometime on the first weekend of the month of February, 2008, Demond Reed soiled himself and all hell broke loose.

Carla Poole, who obviously takes beating up on four-year-old boys seriously, began to beat the living snot out of her little cousin, who was probably feeling pretty bad about soiling himself in the first place.

The beating started out bad. Then it got worse.

    How much worse?

Well, Carla Poole beat Demond Reed so badly that he had bruises all over his body, bruises all over his head, broken ribs, and puncture wounds on his stomach, back, and buttocks. He even had a bite mark on his stomach.

Carla Poole even enlisted her four and six-year-old children to help her, ordering them to hold the boy down while she punched him.

Finally, after Carla Poole stopped to catch her breath, Demond Reed’s body decided it couldn’t take any more. He had a seizure and stopped breathing.

Realizing that maybe she had taken things a bit too far, Carla Poole tried to perform CPR but failed, adding “failing to resuscitate cousin I beat to death” to her already lengthy list of failures in life.

Evidently, health care in the Poole family is limited to throwing suffering and possibly dead family members on the couch or floor and hoping for the best, because according to Carla Poole’s 11-year-old daughter, when everyone checked on Demond the next morning he was “frozen.”

Somehow, even after Carla Poole hadn’t been able to detect Demond Reed’s heartbeat the previous night, this was a surprise to everyone.

Carla Poole left the dead boy on a bed for two days, then double-wrapped the body up in a canvas bag and a garbage bag and put the grisly package into a closet.

Now, if Demond Reed had been Carla Poole’s own child, his death may have gone unnoticed for some time. Years even, if Carla Poole played it right.

    But he wasn’t.

On the 4th of February, 2008, Demond Reed’s mother, 24-year-old Sandy Caples, called Carla Poole from Sandy’s residence in Chicago. She wanted to come pick up Demond and take him to a birthday party.

    Uh oh.

Somehow, Carla Poole managed to get Sandy to agree to wait a few days before picking Demond up, long enough for Carla to figure out how to get out of this mess she had made.

Carla Poole thought and thought and thought. Then she had an idea.

Why not tell everyone that Demond had been abducted?

    So that’s what she did.

On the 6th of February, Carla Poole told her 11-year-old daughter to call Demond’s family and the police to report that Demond was missing, that a woman named “Shawna” had taken him.

Police came, took statements, brought bloodhounds and so on.

Carla Poole didn’t keep house all that well, however, so that threw the dogs off the trail.

Plus there was this mysterious Shawna Williams character.

Carla Poole gave a detailed description of her friends to the police and to the media, who put out this alert:

Shawna Williams is African American, 5′5 to 5′7, 35 to 38-years-old with a tattoo of the name ‘Shawn’ on her arm. Police say Williams has straight, brown hair down to her chin with brown-blond highlighted weaves. She was last seen wearing a dark, rusty-red leather jacket, a white skull cap, white gloves, white shoes and faded blue jeans.

As you can imagine, while the investigation into Demond Reed’s abduction was underway, the police were very interested in who and where Shawna Williams was.

Carla Poole stuck with her story, insisting that on the 6th of February that she took her son to the hospital for a while and that while she was gone, she left her kids with her friend Shawna Williams. When Carla and her son returned from the hospital, Shawna and Demond were gone.

In an interview with the police, Carla Poole stated:

My daughter tells me that she comes out of the washroom, the back door is open, and Demond’s gone and Shawna’s gone.

Carla even went so far as to appear on the local news, pleading with “Shawna” in the hopes that she would bring back Carla’s little cousin.

Wherever she is, I wish she would just hurry up and bring him back. I don’t know why she took him but I wish she would bring my little cousin back.

Give this woman an Oscar. Amazingly good performance from a cold-blooded killer.

Things didn’t add up to the police, however, who decided to thoroughly search the duplex where Carla and her family lived.

At about 3 in the morning, on the 10th of February, they found Demond’s body, wrapped in a black garbage bag which was then put into a canvas bag and put into a closet in the common area of the duplex.

The autopsy revealed the savage beating the four-year-old had endured. Along with the bruises all over his body, the puncture wounds to his belly and the fractured ribs, medical examiners found the bleeding on Demond’s brain which had caused the fatal seizure.

Carla Poole was charged with second-degree murder on the 12th of February.

Her children explained to the investigators that their mother had enlisted their help to hold Demond down while she beat him and that their mother had told them what to tell the police.

Carla’s children were placed into protective custody with foster families.

Carla’s fingerprints were found on the garbage bag containing Demond’s body. Prosecutors are also considering other evidence that they’ve found and are hoping they have enough for a first-degree murder charge.

    We’ll see.

Understandably, the family is a little upset with Carla Poole.

According to Kina Caples, Demond’s grandmother:

I want an answer and I want some justice. That’s all. God is gonna give me my answer one day.

Really, why wait? You can be sure that if Carla walked free on bond that some people would make sure that she didn’t come back.

    Update:

Carla Poole pled guilty to second degree unintentional homicide. A 40-year prison sentence is the maximum allowed by law.

In court, Carla Poole chose not to say anything as a judge sentenced her to 40 years in prison for the murder of her 4-year-old cousin Demond Reed.

Carla Poole’s own small children are now in the hands of child protective services.

Ok…so when the kids dad gets out of jail I’m sure all hell is gonna break loose. If she does get out on bail, which it doesn’t sound like it; sounds like the family doesn’t have mass amounts of cash laying around, but that she’d probably get the beat down pretty bad.

Somebody needs to govern who can and cannot have children. I’m pretty sure that would solve a few problems. Nothing will solve this problem completely, I suppose. What the hell is going to stop these idiots from killing all these poor kids?!? I think couples should be screened and have a psych evaluation before they are allowed to have children. hahah. Maybe that would stop some of this foolishness. There are too many kids dying these days and I can’t stand it.

      Kim -
      Governemnt reproductive control?
Waiting until marriage gives the proper
“authorities” (parents, church, governement, etc..) the type of control you desire.

My daugher, who I love, is an “oops” baby, so I myself, skirted the traditional process as well. My daughter is 12, I am 40.
My cousin at 19 or 20 also had an “oops” baby as well - the child is in college now.

Demond’s father was 17 or so when Demond was born - not very many people are ready to become real parents at that age.

The fact that the father was going off to jail should have set off a few red flags, but that’s not the “correctional system’s job”

Too many decent members of society have one or more of the characteristics of Demond’s family; there are few “perfect” situations these days.

With proper “sympathy therapy” Carla will not offend again and others will also benefit from her sessions, and think twice about what is appropriate dicipline. In short beat the bitch to death and broadcast it.

I never said government reproductive control. I said “somebody should”. There’s a difference. I also never said anything about marriage. I had an oops baby when I was 20. But the difference is, I didn’t kill him. I also didn’t neglect him or anything else to that effect. I was thinking that if a girl has 2 or 3 children by different men, and is on government assistance because she can’t take care of them and the fathers can’t take care of them, something needs to be done to keep her from just popping them out one right after the other. I know there aren’t many “perfect” situations these days. I also have no idea how to keep monsters from reproducing. It’s a catch 22 I guess you could say. Also, if a woman has already given up children for adoption, she sure doesn’t need to keep on having them.

What a biatch!!! And getting her own children to help her? How will this effect them in the future? Wonder if they will become abusive liars like their mother. Wonder where this woman’s babies’ daddy is? Anyways, reproduction control. Awesome idea. I’ve read quite a few books that involve this. Everyone should be sterilized, and have to fill out an application to have a child. This would reduce child abuse (up to and including death) child abandonment, abortions, women killing their newborns by putting them in a trash can, etc., and would also rid teenagers becomming parents. Not that I’m totally against teenage pregnancy, my best friend had a child when she was 15 (years ago) and is one of the best mom’s I know, but some babies aren’t that lucky!! I don’t care how they do it…but it should be done! Vote Hell!

Oh goodie, training for another generation of abusers.

Do the authorities look at the other relatives in a situation like this. You know damn well this abuse isn’t unique to Carla Poole and her little family. I’m not suggesting she is a victim because regardless of her past she still is responsible for her actions, but I would venture to guess she was abused, other family members were abused, and there is still abuse going on.

The entire pack of animals needs to be looked at, and I don’t think that forced sterilization may not be a bad idea.

Bob Barker always signed off of “The Price is Right” encouraging us to control the animal population by spaying and nuetering. Maybe we should listen.

If they’re taking our tax dollars, I feel we should be able to put some stipulations on reproduction, do some drug testing, and some training on how to take care of the puppies that they already have.

Miwist- I agree the goverment really makes it easy for low lifes to live off them. Drug testing for food stamps would still be hurting the kids. These people would still do the drugs plus not get their kids food. It is a sad circle of abuse for kids in these situations. I certainly would not want more goverment control, but like most things people complain about, if your not doing anything wrong you don’t have to worry. The problem there lies in where who is deciding what is wrong and what is right. At the expense of one more innocent child being abused, I’d sighn up for mandatory sterilization.

      What a fucking cunt!
I just watched the video, and I didn’t think that was any great performance. Sorry, admin.

I would have shown more emotion over having lost a kid I’d never met. She kept saying… I want him back… I want him back.
I’ll bet you do, bitch. Then you wouldn’t be looking at having to find a new girlfriend in prison.

She said that he just brought more ‘joy’ to their home. That her kids were happy because they had someone to play with. Is that what you call it when you make your kids hold down some little boy so you can beat them harder? Playing?

I am sick and tired of hearing about people beating their children to death over potty-training. Four years old is NOT unusual for a boy to be having accidents. Especially if they’ve been hot-potatoed from home to home with no consistent homelife. Beating children is a surefire way to guarantee that they will CONTINUE to have ‘accidents’, because stress causes accidents.

Read a parenting book, you stupid fucks. It’s common knowlege that the best way to deal with ‘accidents’ is to downplay them and teach your child to help you clean up their bedding and clothes. Both of my children are much older than this victim, and they still have accidents once in a while. I don’t beat them to death for it.

Beating or humiliating a child (or an adult) for making ‘a mess’ is no more effective than shoving a puppy’s nose in his shit while yelling/smacking him. Meaning, it does not work. It only results in an angry/resentful child/puppy.

These kinds of cases are where I want to see the death penalty carried out. And then, I’d like to see the stupid POS try not to shit their pants when they’re executed. Arghhhh.

You know, my daughter wet her bed until she was about 8 years old. It was frustrating as hell, but you know what? I didn’t beat her to death. Hell, I didn’t even punish her or yell at her or berate her at all. Most of the time I didn’t even know she did it until the next morning because she slept so soundly that she didn’t even wake up. That wasn’t her fault. I tried to get her up in the middle of the night, but that girl just would’t wake up. I always had her change her own sheets, but I never once spanked her. Little ones need guidance and love when they are growing up, not beatings. I am so tired of hearing and reading about all the babies and children getting beat to death and abused and starved that I could just scream. I don’t know what in the world a few people could do about things like this, but I sure wish there was something. It makes me sick. Every single day, open the paper, turn on the news and BAM, another kid getting killed or beaten to death or starved. It gets old.

Parents, LOVE YOUR KIDS THEY GROW UP TOO DAMN FAST!!! I for one don’t want my kids growing up hating me or becoming dregs of society. I am not the best mom in the world but every day since my kids were born, they have heard me say “I love you”. That’s a big part of having good kids.

possibly a remark that’ll have people like me less, but something i do believe in.
the term “corrective beating” is something i do believe in. a kid that’s misbehaving in such a way that spanking their arse is in order is something i think is perfectly acceptable. my mum did it with me and my siblings and i think in some cases it’s fair to do so.
now don’t get me wrong, i’m not talking about beating so hard it bruises, i mean spanking that’s meant to be felt, but not hurt (i’m sure you know what i mean).
what do you guys think about these things?

I’m all in favor of spankings. My kids got their fair share of them when they were growing up. But guess what, the boys are adults now and they are awesome. They show respect to their elders and are very considerate of other people. They treat me with respect as well. There is nothing those boys wouldn’t do for me and I think it is because I didn’t let them get away with things while they were little. If they acted up, they got punished according to the transgression. Major stupidity got them a spanking, while lesser events got them grounded. None of my boys ever raised a hand to me and to this day I have never heard any my kids say they hate me or anything else like it. I’m very proud of all of them. I have to say that I think I did a damn fine job even though I did have to whoop that ass every once in a while. :) But guess what. I NEVER left a bruise on my kids. They might have had handprints on that butt, but never a bruise or a broken bone. And certainly not death.

I slapped my daughter when she was 12. She deemed it apporpriate to sream ’shut-up’ 2 inches from my face and I did not. I felt horrible and I think she knew it. I think the shame on my face was enough for her to never want to see me like that again. Never had to slap my son. Spankings didn’t happen when they were little, Nose in the corner did though. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a yeller they hear their just desserts, but that’s all and just because I feel like when I’m nice the first 5 times, I’m not being heard. Yelling works for me! but I never demean them. Now my old man (their step dad) just has to ‘look’ at them. That’s interesting to me. It’s like they can ’see’ what he’s thinking and conform immediately. ahh. How bliss whould life be if they could read my mind?

I’ve never had to slap my daughter. Interestingly enough, I’ve hardly ever had to even spank her. I raise my voice to her every now and then and that seems to work, but she’s actually a pretty good kid. You know girls though, they have those pissy days when everything seems to bother them but all I have to do is say her name firmly and she calms down. Or I send her to her room. The boys are a totally different story. It seemed like the only thing they understood was an ass whooping. hahah. I didn’t do it much when they were little, but damn, when they became teenagers, you bet they got swatted. I yell too and that did work sometimes. When they got really big, I had to get out a broomstick to threaten them with a few times. hahahha. Never hit them with it though. Boy, did I ever want to every now and then. What worked best on the boys is crying. LOL. They sure didn’t want to make mama cry. I think that’s funny that the crying hurt them worse than anything. Their friends always told them they had the best mom ever. I guess that means I didn’t do too bad. Right? Oh, and the corner thing? Never did work with my hellions. hahahha. Different people do their thing differently and mine seemed to work pretty well without me ending up with dead or abused kids. Yay me!! :)

Yay you?! I don’t think so. These last few comments make me sick. Here we are discussing how it is terrible to abuse children, and the 4 of you are all for it! You make me sick, as far as I’m concerned, you are just the same as her. No you didn’t go as far as killing anyone, but you did think it was ok to beat your child. (Yes spanking is abuse, no matter what the law says.) This woman is deranged and definitely deserves to be punished, but I firmly believe that anyone who lays a hand on their child deserves to be punished as well. It doesn’t matter where or how hard you hit them, the only thing it does is causes fear of being caught. As children they do not respect you for it, they fear you. As they get older, they think they turned out ok and then they condone spanking as well. None of it is ok, no child deserves to be hurt by anyone, especially their parents, no matter what they did or didn’t do. If you can’t take care of your children without hurting them, then you are doing something completely wrong. I have 3 kids and I have never layed a hand on them. And they are quite a challenge. If people like this continue to think spanking and other forms of physical punishment are ok, then the beatings will never stop. Stop thinking about yourselves, and start thinking about the kids, they are what is important.

I didn’t HIT my kids, I spanked them. Jaci, for crying out loud. I have great kids who do respect me for teaching them it’s not alright to stuff that will get them in trouble. They will be the first to tell anybody that I love them and I never hurt them in any way. Get over yourself and quit being so self-righteous. Sounds like maybe you got spankings and didn’t like it. What kid does? I never liked them, but I knew right from wrong and I knew that if I did something wrong I would pay the consequences. That’s what is wrong with kids these days. They don’t think they will get in trouble for doing something wrong. Or else they will just get a “slap on the wrist” and I don’t mean literally either. So, you do what you have to do and I will do what I have to do. Different strokes, etc. Self-righteous assholes make me wanna puke.

Jayni, my kids never even THOUGHT about running away. Know why? Because they knew I loved them and they loved me and respected me and we were pretty happy. I have really good kids and I am proud of them and proud of the way they were raised. Like I said, every single day since they popped out I have said “I love you” to each one of them. We don’t go anywhere or do anything without saying we love each other. It’s nice to have such good kids without any of them turning out to be psychos because they think they can do no wrong.

I grew up being spanked quite regularly, and as y’all can probably tell, it didn’t really knock the bratty out of me. I’m not resentful that I was spanked, but I also don’t think it did much good.

I don’t spank/slap my children. It kind of goes against many of the things I am trying to teach my boys.
First of all, I have a ‘no-touching unless it’s showing love’ house. I do not tolerate ANY kind of aggressive physical interaction. It would seem kind of hypocritical for me to have a rule like that, if I was allowed to spank/hit them. Secondly, I have always tried to teach them that we do NOT hurt people that we love, physically or verbally, even if they’ve hurt us. As a parent, my job is to keep my children safe and unhurt by anyone, including me.

In addition to those reasons is another, more selfish one. My children are smaller than me for now, but not for long, and because of some of my medical problems, they for the most part are already stronger than me. Their father is 6ft 3, and it’s clear they are going to be very tall- they’re almost as tall as me already. I am pretty petite, and it would be very stupid of me to try to discipline my children by force… since that only works as long as you can maintain that force. I do not want to get physically harmed by either of them when they get into their rash teen years. It’s also not good to teach kids that whoever is bigger or stronger gets to be the ‘boss’.

I also have a ‘no yelling’ policy in my home. One of the best things about divorcing their father was being able to live in a peaceful home with no barking, yelling, screaming, whatever. I HATED it. I do not want to yell, nor do I want to be yelled at by anyone.

So, pretty much the boys know they are in trouble because when they misbehave and make me mad, I get quiet. And then I leave the room to think for a minute. When I come back I tell them- you will go to your room, and I am not going to talk to you or acknowlege you until you want to talk about what you did. Do not come out until you are ready to. Being ignored works pretty well for my kids. Diffusing the situation instead of ‘arguing’ it out. When they were little, they’d sometimes trash their room while on their time-out. I just made them clean it all up later. Their father and I have very different approaches. He yells and intimidates, belittles, calls names, threatens, and ‘grounds’ them for stupid amounts of time (like years) that he never follows through with. At the very least, I try to be consistent so that they know my rules and know what to expect, whether they like it or not.

When they were toddlers, I did slap their hands when they tried to do something dangerous, like touch the stove, etc. I think for toddlers, it’s a good way to get their attention, since you can’t very well just let them find out for themselves, lol.

What’s funny is that I always planned to spank, like my parents did with me. They told me they never spanked me when they were angry, which was why I always had to ‘wait’ for my spankings. It sounded like a good idea, so that you’d be calmer and in more control. I found that when I tried that, I didn’t really feel like spanking them once I’d cooled down. Sometimes (even though my parents claim differently) that spanking is really more of a way for parents to express themselves and let off some of their anger, than it is for creating any real discipline in children. Children should be able to find other reasons not to do bad things, other than because they’ll get spanked if they get caught. Then they just learn how to lie or hide what they’ve done.

Just my opinions. I know plenty of people who spank their children, and that’s their choice in how they parent. Whether you disagree with it or not, there’s a big difference between that and ‘beating’ your children. What average people would consider ’spanking’ won’t lead to death like beating does.

You are right, Glory. Different people do things differently with their kids. Whatever works. But like you said, spanking is way different from beating. I might have wanted to beat the snot out of my kids but I never did. I always told them, playfully, I’m fixin to beat the snot out of you. hahahah. I also told them if they were fighting in the car I was going to stop and put them out on the side of the road. LOL. Never did that either. Threats worked pretty good with them. I have pulled the car over on the side of the road and swatted some butts a few times. I hate trying to drive when 3 boys are trying to kill each other in the back seat. I do NOT make excuses for the way I raised my kids. I did it my way and they turned out great. NOT DEAD.

Kim- Jeez, I can’t stand it when the boys start arguing about some stupid thing while I’m trying to drive.

I’ve found the best solution for me is to immediately pull off the road. Then I just sit there, saying nothing. If I’m really ticked about it, I get out of the car and stand there for a couple of minutes before getting back in. They’ve gotten pretty good about apologizing quickly when I do that. They don’t like the uncomfortable silence, I guess.

Actually, now that I think about it, that’s pretty much how I handle adults I have conflicts with, too. I guess I prefer handling my frustration/anger alone, rather than arguing it out like some people do. I’ve never found that to be an effective way to solve conflicts. But like you said, to each their own.

I have a bad temper I guess. It does get out of hand on occasion, I’m sad to say. I’ve never beaten anybody up though I’ve wanted to plenty of times. hahah. And I guess I just like to argue. Who knows. I can be an awfully mean person at times also. hahahah. Still, I have to say I’ve never hurt anybody or killed anybody so I guess I’m not Hellbound as of yet. hahha.

I’ve beat people up before, in a boxing ring and mud wrestleing pit, but never a kid and have not killed anyone. I don’t really like to argue, although I do like to debate. I try my best to stay positive and have fun, but sometimes you run into ‘fun-hating’ funhaters and you got to stand up for your right to have have fun. All the farmers are afaid of me, that’s a GOOD thing. Bunch of funhating asses! BTW I rarely have fun at someone else’s expense.

I have no tats now but would love to get Charlie Tuna jumping out of the crack of my ass~ I think that would be fun for the mortician (sp?) to find on an old lady, now that I’m getting old ya know! Ha! I’m older than y’all. I’m 44!

My kids think my kind of music is boring. I like things like Aimee Mann, John Prine, Nick Drake, Bowie, CamperVanBeethoven, the Pretenders, Alternative rock/folk, and alternative folk/country. No pop-country, please! I also like stuff like the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones, Ray Davies, etc… and the boys do like that.

I’m trying to like the music they listen to, but it’s hard. They like System of a Down, Linkin Park, Korn, Primus… I tolerate it. At least I’m finally free of being forced to listen non-stop to Grateful Dead shit that their father had on constantly. I think it’s funny that it didn’t work, and they don’t like it much, either.

Music is kinda like religion. If you shove it down people’s throats, they tend not to like it, even if it’s mildly palatable.

I’m glad that I don’t have to worry that my ass will fall. I do, however, have to worry that someday it will disappear.

I’ll be 44 in July. sigh…..I HATE getting old. hahaha. anyway, you do listen to weird music, Glory. hahah. See, anything that is different to people, they think it’s weird. Oh well. To each his own. I keep saying that don’t I? hahah. My oldest son listens to music in which the singer is screaming shit at the top of his lungs and I can’t even understand what they are saying. LOL. Strange stuff but hey. He likes it and he doesn’t subject me to it too often. Thank God!!!

I’m a huge Pistols fan. Keep trying to talk my wife into letting me hang a poster of Sid Vicious in the downstairs hallway. The kids think I’m the biggest loser in the world when I’m tooling down the street in the Kia listening to the Pistols, quietly, so as not to damage my hearing.

Wow, it’s amazing how typing in all caps really gets across the intensity of whatever you are saying!

The other option, of course, is to think carefully about what you write, in order to get across to other people your opinions and feelings. Meaning that you don’t need to yell.

I’d hate to think that the all caps thing is because people are lazy about having to use punctuation.

I would gladly take the honor of being a torturer of this psycho. I would do everything to her that she did to the little boy and with a smile.

well there isn’t a thing i could say abput this nasty rotten bitch and what she did to that poor baby demond, but what’s up with remaining silent in court?

she had the balls to beat a poor 4 year old who was probably already embarrassed and hurt over having an accident, but didn’t have the balls to muster up and apology to the family members and community that actually gave a shit about him? or her own children that she traumatized by forcing them to help?
