I don't understand why people always say that. "Young people don't think about dying". I am only 21 and I am well aware that the grim reaper could be knocking at my door tonite, have been since I was 10! I just must be overly paranoid:)

These parents are classic enablers. How is it everyone elses fault when their daughter chose to drink till she died? I must admit for my 21st a few months ago I drank quite a bit, and I also knew my limt and knew when to stop. I'm sure she just ignored her body and wanted to drink as much as possible. Even if her friends tried to stop her she probably may not have listened and just continued to drink the nite away. It looks to me like she was crying out for attention. She already had an eating disorder and a severe alchohol addiction by age 21. Most likely brought on by her parents who look like they don't like to directly deal with issues and would rather skirt their way around things.

Drunk people who are with other drunk people do not realize that anyone is drunk. I am sorry but young people do not think about dying. It does not occur to them to go to the er for anything unless it is a broken arm that is so obvisious that you can't avoid it. The parents are fools who don't want to admit that their daughter was an alcoholic. On the other hand it would have been nice for this young lady to grow up and out of this stage. Everyone acts stupid when they are young but most of us are given the chance to see how foolish we acted.

Parents these days are not doing their kids any favors by not holding them responsible for thier own actions. They are constantly blaming other people for the things thier children do of thier own free will. Always blaming others and never themselves for not raising thier children to think about consequences. It is sad, that is why there are so many people to read about on this site. Most are of the latest generation of "adults" who know nothing of consequence or accountability. I hope I am raising my children better.

Most people sue because they know, no matter how stupid the suit is, they have a real good shot at getting the insurance companies to offer a settlement.

No matter how frivilous it is, if there is even a tiny chance of a stupid bleeding-heart jury siding with the plaintiff, the insurance will usually cough up a smaller amount, rather than fight. They claim it's "cost-effective".

So, what we need to so as a society, to end this shit, is twofold:

Number 1 - allow an independent mediator decide how much the award or settlement is appropriate for the damages.

Number 2 - Make tort lawyers (note - the LAWYERS, not the clients) pay stiff penalties if they lose a case.

So basically, this would prevent lawyers from taking stupid bullshit cases, since their chance of getting a million dollar payout would go way down, and it would actually COST them if it was too frivilous.

So, in this case... The mediator might say - a fair settlement amount would be $200k, and the max that they could win at trial would be $350k.

To make it even less likely that the insurance companies would settle bogus claims, there could be two additional things put in place: - Laws that allow the INSURED (ie: the defendant) to demand that the insurance company not settle, and maybe give the insurance companies a tax deduction or something for any amount between the mediator determined settlement and the max award, if the max award is given. (Encourage them to fight the claims).

Our civil legal system is broken - seriously broken, and something needs to be done. But it won't happen, because the lawyers own the playing field LOL.

Ha! There was a case in either Oklahoma or Texas I think where a man broke into some couple's house tripped over something in the floor and broke a bone. Then he sued the couple and won.

Fucking wankers

I saw the two parents on one of the morning news shows, and it is apparent that they are/were in heavy denial. They both sat there glassy eyed and proper. Their rationale for suing the friends was so circular it made me laugh out loud. They said that the friends who bought her drinks should have stopped when they saw she was drunk; however, how do people who are just as drunk make that judgement?
I am not sure that their stupidity is hell worthy; but they have certainly on the road to making their lives a living one. When this all gets to court there will be many facts about their daughter that they do no want to know. They made their bed, and it won't be a soft landing.
