Once, when my mom was a teenager walking home from a party (this was in the 60s), someone grabbed her from behind and put a hand over her mouth. My mom, being a feisty and very athletic teen who ran track (and also beat up lots of boys in her day) bit down on the hand until she tasted blood and ran like a madwoman. She glanced back for just a second to see her own cousin standing there holding his hand.. and he yelled out to her begging her not to tell anyone. Who knows what he would have done to her..and God only knows how many kids he actually hurt.

Finally, I believe sometime in the late 70s, stories started to surface about him, and he was on the verge of being arrested and having his police career ruined. His wife must have found out because she left him. He was devastated at losing her and called her repeatedly, begging her to take him back.

Finally, he called her one last time and threatened suicide if she would not come back to him. Of course, she still refused, and he blew his head off right there over the phone with her…as if he hadn’t put her (and an unknown # of kids) through enough already.

This story doesn’t get any better though… his sister (my 2nd cousin) was screwed up for the rest of her life, and died about 7 yrs ago due to illness. She never wanted to talk about any of those events. She never married or had children.

So yes, you can work with someone and be their best friend for years and years, but if they really want to hide their dark side, it can be done. And yes, cops are people too, and have the same propensity for evil that any other human can have.
