Sometimes, problems crop up in the lives of convicted sexual offenders.

They get nasty letters left in their mailboxes. They get harassed by neighbors. They’re stared at when they come outside.

62-year-old Robert Wayne Daffron was on the cusp of becoming a convicted sexual offender.

In April of 2007, Robert Daffron was arrested by police for providing alcohol to a 14-year-old girl. This was the first time that Robert Daffron had appeared on the radar of law enforcement authorities, as the retired bread delivery man was better known in the community for his love of restoring classic cars than his love of little girls.

Nonetheless, an investigation was launched into Robert Daffron’s possible molestation of this child.

On the 15th of May, 2007, investigators, who were beginning to uncover some rather unsavory aspects of Robert Daffron’s life, served a search warrant for Mr. Daffron’s house. As the investigators were searching Robert Daffron’s home, they noticed that he threw a plastic bag over his neighbor’s backyard fence. When officers retrieved the plastic bag, they found a computer printer inside it.

Now that was interesting.

Not just for the fact that people usually don’t dispose of computer equipment in this fashion, but also because Robert Wayne Daffron had filed a police report earlier that stated his computer equipment had been stolen.

When asked about where his computers were, and where his car (a 1966 Chevy Nova) was, Robert Daffron told officers that his computers had all been stolen and that a friend of his had his car and that he didn’t know where it was.

Hmmmm.

Now, that could have been a problem for the investigation if it wasn’t for the fact that officers, who had done their homework on Robert Daffron’s life, also served a search warrant for a garage that belonged to that friend of his - who happened to live right around the corner.

In that garage was Robert Daffron’s Chevy Nova and his black 2003 Silverado truck, along with two computers and a camera which had been neatly wrapped up in a plastic shopping bag.

Robert Daffron was arrested and booked on suspicion of filing a false police report and felony child endangerment charges. After the usual booking process, Robert Daffron bonded out and went along his merry way.

Investigators kept working, however, working on Robert’s computers and looking through his hard drives until they found lots and lots of child porn, along with raw footage of what was intended to be edited into child porn.

Computer forensic experts found enough evidence on Robert Daffron’s computers to bring 29 charges against Mr. Daffron, who had a million-dollar arrest warrant issued for him on the 29th of August, 2007. That was the day before Daffron was scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 in the afternoon to answer for his previous charges.

Yes, Robert Daffron’s life was about to become a bit more complicated. Not only was he looking at prison time, he was also about to begin facing all the other problems that sexual offenders face.

But on the 30th of August, 2007, all of Robert Wayne Daffron’s problems went away.

At about a quarter until nine in the morning on that date, police saw Robert Daffron driving his 2003 Chevy Silverado down the street. Recognizing him from a shift briefing, the officers pulled Mr. Daffron over, following him as he pulled into the parking lot of a supermarket.

Once he had stopped his truck, Robert Daffron stepped out of the vehicle, reached back into the truck and pulled out a gun.

Whoa! Weren’t expecting that, were you?

After pointing the gun at officers, who displayed a tremendous amount of restraint in not putting many, many bullets into Robert Daffron, the child molester turned the gun on himself.

Officers, who at this point had taken cover on the ground by their vehicles, ordered Robert Daffron to put down his gun and give himself up.

Robert Daffron, however, chose option B, shooting himself in the head, which killed him instantly.

Some of the neighbors were a little upset that officers didn’t move Robert Daffron’s body, that it was covered with a silver rescue blanket and left on the ground while police conducted their investigation.

One individual, 25-year-old Ron Scanlon, who had grown up with Robert Daffron’s son, told reporters:

I’m pretty disgusted. This shouldn’t have happened. He was a real good guy.

They’re always good guys, until they take photographs of your pre-teen daughter and pass them around the Internet. Then you call for their blood.

Merced Police Detective Joe Weiss, who specializes in computer forensics, had this to say about child pornography:

You can take a look at the Megan’s Law Web site and see how many registrants we have within Merced County. It’s quite a bit. I’m not going to say that we have an epidemic of child pornography but it’s pretty common. There’s enough to keep me busy, nonstop.

Police recommend using the Megan’s Law website to see how many convicted sexual offenders live in your neck of the woods. Just by checking out Merced County on that site, you can see that 504 sexual offenders are living within the boundaries of Merced County, and that they’re nicely spread out in the town of Merced. Hell, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a sexual offender, who might take that cat and rape it or something.

Interestingly, sex offenders who are out on parole have their rent paid for by the parole board, and if that sexual offender is considered to have a mental illness, the parole board pays for treatment for that as well.
