People You’ll See In Hell

Denise Smith and Shawnee Allen could be described as capitalist-minded entrepreneurs, or Denise Smith and Shawnee Allen could be described as a pair of child-abusing criminals.

It’s hard to say, because the truth isn’t going to be easy to find.

On the 17th of March, 2008, DreVion Settles was dropped off by his 18-year-old mother Sherika Shelly, whose MySpace page can be found here, at Denise Smith’s place. Apparently, Denise Smith has her hand in a few daycare operations in the Omaha area.

At 9:30 in the morning, Denise Smith drove DreVion Settles to the Acquainted With the Angels day care, which is on the good side of town. DreVion Settles stayed at the Acquainted With the Angels day care until 8:30 at night, at which point Denise Smith picked DreVion Settles up and drove off with him in her van, as usual.

Not as usual was Denise Smith’s stop in the heart of Omaha’s ghetto, at the location of ABC 123 Child Care, which is pictured below.

A cheerful place. Especially at 8:30 at night for a baby who hasn’t seen his mother in 12 hours.

Denise Smith evidently thought it was a good idea to leave a baby in the care of Shawnee Allen, a woman who was unlicensed to care for children in the state of Nebraska.

Denise Smith left DreVion Settles in the care of Shawnee Allen for about 40 minutes while Denise went out and ran some personal errands.

Let’s not be coy, but if you’re a 6-month-old baby who was unlucky enough to be named DreVion, you will probably have a few more hurdles to jump in your life than a baby boy whose name is “Brett Bretterson.”

Still, I can’t think of any reason why DreVion Settles had to suffer two broken legs, a broken arm, fluid and blood buildup in his lung and a wide variety of bitemarks and bruises on his body - all obvious injuries that he was suffering when he was dropped off with his mother after being picked up from the ABC 123 day care hell.

DreVion’s mother, who works long hours to support her two children, was slightly upset with the condition in which her borrowed child had been returned, and called Denise Smith for some answers.

According to Sherika Shelly:

My son wasn’t breathing. He had bruises all over his face and his stomach, and his leg was just sticking out. I called the day care lady first, and she’s talking about did nothing, didn’t nobody do nothing to your baby. Nothing happened to him.

Police were called and an investigation ensued. After questioning, Denise Smith admitted that she had dropped off DreVion with Shawnee Allen - an unauthorized sitter - for almost an hour. Shawnee Allen admitted, after questioning, that one of the 8-year-old boys that was in her care had done something to DreVion. According to Shawnee Allen, she heard DreVion suddenly scream out. When she came out to check on what was going on in the house of love we like to refer to as ABC 123 Day Care, she found the 8-year-old holding the baby, who had a red mark on his cheek and was crying hysterically.

She didn’t bother telling Denise Smith about the incident when she came back to pick DreVion up, of course. Why would she do that? Anyways, she had an entire houseful of children that she regularly cared for that would be happy to tell the po-po that the unprosecutable 8-year-old did something to the baby.

DreVion Settles was still on a ventilator due to his injuries as of the 21st of March, 2008.

ABC 123 Child Care, was closed down and their license was yanked pending an investigation.

And hey, not to be patronizing or anything, but…if you own your own daycare, and are transporting other peoples’ children (that aren’t assigned to your care), don’t drop them off at your own low-rent shanty daycare to take care of personal business.

In-home daycares are often selected by working parents in need of affordable daycare. Do a background check on your candidates, please.
