While we write, here at People You’ll See In Hell, we like to listen to music. Right now, while we’re researching a particularly disturbing individual, we’re really enjoying listening to Emma Russack’s acoustic covers of songs by Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen.
Emma Russack is an Australian who happens to be the lead singer of Lola Flash. She is quite young, under 18 I believe.
I hope she doesn’t kill anyone in a depraved or unusual manner, as I would hate to put someone with that voice on People You’ll See In Hell.
Joy Division:
Echo and the Bunnymen

If she kills - then I’ll have to offer exact punishment. It’s as simple as that.
For her sake, let’s hope we never see her in criminal court, yes.
Oh and I particularly favor heavy metal.
But thanks anyway…

I think someone must be a little more swayed by how a young teenish-looking person looks than how they sound.
Because I’m quite familiar with that genre (though I prefer alternative rock, folk, blues, etc.)… and I found nothing to be impressed about other than long hair and a teenaged face. The voice was particularly lacking- not standard out-of-tune ‘American Idol’-ish, but absolutely nothing to write home about.
In fact, I think the Canadian singer who does ‘FreeCreditReport.Com’ commercials to have a more impressive voice- and he’s so annoying I’d like to rip his lungs out.
But, during the intermission, thank you for the musical recommendation.

I would like to add, that unlike TurtleMania, whom I have great respect for, I have no desire to pee on her. But I also have no desire to listen to any more of her covers of other people’s music.

Since I’m probably now annoying people with my opinions about music as much as I do with my opinions about Admin’s stories, I thought I’d recommend a listen to “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwNXvQ2OK_k”.
(Aerials)
That’s my 10 year old son’s favourite band, System of a Down. After being intensely annoyed by being forced to listen to song after song of theirs, I’ve realized some of them are actually a bit catchy.
I think Miwist would find their ‘Prison Song’ particularly relevant.
As someone who would prefer old Camper Van Beethoven songs, it was not my choice to recommend this band (I’m not all into metal or harcore grunge), but my son requested that I do. It has annoyed more than one person that I allow my children to read this site, and to read what I post. It will, no doubt, annoy them further to learn that I allow them to listen to this band.
It’s not my choice of music, but ‘Aeriels’ and a few others aren’t that untolerable to me after forced repeated listenings, have grown on me, especially considering the numerous hours spent answering my kid’s questions about the meanings of all their songs. I’m not going to piss on any band that I don’t personally like that has created a dialog between me and my kids about so many different subjects. The references they allude to have led to untold hours of talk with my kids, and for that alone I’ll thank them.
While I don’t get many of their songs- because it’s not the genre of my choice- there aren’t too many bands that reference the Armenian Genocide repeatedly. We live in the Central Valley, so it’s relevant here, considering Soroyan/Varaz. Conversations this band has instigated include sex, politics, Americanism, Chinese policies re their citizens, war, porn, pollution… et al, et al.
As a musician, I might not like their music personally, but based on the conversations with my kids that it’s instigated, I like them. No other band/outlet has created that window for discussion like this band has.
So, while it’s not my cup of tea, it’s worth recommending and checking out. No matter what kind of music you like, or how much you hate the music your children like.. being open, listening to it, talking about it with them, seems to be so much more condusive towards a communication link than saying it sucks and refusing to listen to it. And please don’t misconstrue my reference to ‘listening and talking’ into putting down and pushing your own preferences.
Just my unasked opinion about parents and the music their children listen to. Give this band a listen to. It is very popular among certain types including s8ters.
IMO every single story on this site would have played out differently if someone had paid attention to their children, and their interests, even if they were not shared by the adults in their lives. That includes music, films, books, activties- as if they were real people who deserve respect, and not just objects to be tossed about and used/manipulated/murdered.
I love my children. I do not have to enjoy the things they like- but I do need to know what those things are, if I want to stand any chance of them trusting or confiding in me.
So, while we’re waiting for Admin’s next post, I’d like to recommend that you take them time to identify the music your children (or grandchildren) listen to, listen to it yourselves, read the lyrics, and then talk to them about why they like that music. Instead of just telling them why you think it sucks, which is the lazy, unproductive approach.
Like I said- just me being annoying as usual.

Your kids should force you to listen to this:

Bind mom to a chair until the song is done.
Enjoy.

Camper Van Beethoven had a few good songs.
They Might Be Giants, the Pixies, Oingo Boingo, Morrissey, Sisters of Mercy…all good things.

Oingo Boingo? That’s ironic.

Wow! She has an amasing voice. Kind of makes me think of Tori Amos. Well, since everyone else is talking about what they like . . . I just LOVE music, so many different things but not very big on country and mindless pop. My favorite is punk old school punk. So, submitted for your approval, or lack their of is a clip Stiff Little Fingers from a Feb 2008 show.

I love these guys. They’ve been performing since 1977 and still doing it. This next clip shows what they were rebelling against back then.

Admin- could you cover this?
Stephanie Burlingham, 14, was called a “boff” (brainy student) by classmates who teased and spat at her after discovering she was in counselling.
She killed herself by hanging, same as my brother did. I would research/cover it, but I’m not on your staff.
I have a special thing about suicide of non-guilty people. That’s my deal. But, I also think this story has similarities to Lori Drew. Can you research/post it?
