19-year-old Rozlynn Rodgers, despite being a grown woman, epitomizes the adolescent self-centered attitude and tendency towards shortsighted behavior. A high school student at Las Casas Occupational High School, an “alternative” high school which, according to their website, serves students whose emotional needs cannot be met in a regular public school setting, Rozlynn Rodgers planned to graduate in June of 2008 with the rest of her class.
It looks like her graduation date might be slightly delayed.
You see, on the afternoon of the 4th of April, 2008, Rozlynn Rodgers gave her 5-month-old daughter, Makalah Rodgers, a bath.
Bathtime can be a fun time, a great way for a new mother or father to bond with their little one. Babies often like to splash their little hands into the bathwater and grab toys that float by. Warm water makes a baby feel good, and probably reminds them somehow of that dark space they were in for 9 months or so.
But what some people would consider a privilege, what some people are desperate to experience, Rozlynn Rodgers considered a burden. For Rozlynn Rodgers, bathtime wasn’t fun. Babies weren’t fun. Babies were a pain in the ass. Babies keep you from going out and partying. Guys aren’t all that into girls who have to stay home and take care of their baby.
Rozlynn Rodgers was tired of it.
So after putting 5-month-old Makalah Rodgers, who might have been learning to sit by herself at this point, into a full bathtub, Rozlynn Rodgers sat and watched as this little tiny human being slipped under the bathwater.
And she watched.
And she watched some more.
Makalah undoubtedly had her eyes open, with her arms outstretched and grasping for something, anything, anyone to pick her up out of the water, to comfort her and make her feel safe. She may have recognized her mother through the haze of the bathwater and opened her mouth to cry for help. Makalah probably thrashed around a good deal while the water poured down her mouth, down her throat and into her lungs.
Makalah Rodgers drowned while Rozlynn Rodgers watched and did nothing but think about all the parties she was now going to be able to attend.
After she was sure that her daughter was dead, Rozlynn told someone else in the house to call 911 while she pulled the corpse of her dead child out of the water.
Police who arrived found a tearful Rozlynn holding her dead child, insisting that she had only stepped away for a moment and come back to find her daughter had drowned.
What a tragedy.
An autopsy was inconclusive, but something the medical examiners found caused police to return to Rozlynn Rodgers on the 22nd of April, 2008 and arrest her. While the cops did so, Rozlynn took the opportunity to let her wild side out and attacked the officers who were arresting her. While sitting in an interview room with a police detective, Rozlynn figured that it would help her case out to attack the detective, knocking over a table before scratching, punching, kicking and spitting in the detective’s face.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Anna Planey, who spoke during a bond hearing before Judge Laura Sullivan:
Rozlynn Rodgers told police she didn’t want to be a mom anymore because she couldn’t go to parties if she had to take care of the baby.
Rozlynn Rodgers has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a police officer. She faces life in prison.
She will not be attending any parties anytime soon.

I’m curious as to what it was that clued them in that it wasn’t an accidental drowning. I can’t believe it when mothers do this…Whatever happened to motherly instinct?
It’s a tragic thing to point out, but motherly instinct isn’t always there. Kids are more likely to be hurt by their parents or other family members than by strangers.

I think its just part of a decline in basic morals. Things are so different now. You cant discipline your children anymore, and then people scratch their heads and wonder why kids go off the rails. These same kids grow up and think they can do whatever they want. People have morals, but they are different. It used to be that you respected the elderly. Now the elderly get beaten in their homes.
It used to be that people worked hard for a living and found satisfaction in their work. Now people just take what they want.
EVERYTHING is going down hill. And my guess is that its only going to get worse.

While Roz deserves the death penalty, as a taxpayer I am glad that she’s goingto a place where she won’t be producing any more children.
She could have easily given the child up for adoption, but bye-bye welfare check as well.

Odds are that this behemoth won’t get much more than cigarettes in prison. I’m fairly certain that whatever poor bastard impregnated her the first time would never own up to it. I hate to say this, but how would this babies life had turned if his mother had continued to raise him. Not thaty I prefer a harsh death of drownding, but eventually he would have ended up on this site at some point in his life.

I 100% agree with you. I just had my baby 4 months ago and he is he most adorable baby, I never want to put him down! If I ever feel like I don’t have control of the situation, if I can’t figure out why he’s crying I hand him over to my mom or if i’m by myself I put him down and let him cry it out a bit but I’ve NEVER felt like harming him in any way. Just yesterday I startled him on accident and his eyes got big and he shook and started to cry… I was so sad I wanted to cry with him I felt so bad! Even when he has a hard poop I’m all glassy eyed because i know it hurts him.
Suddenly, shaking a baby doesn’t doesn’t seem so bad.

It takes a sick person to think of something like that. I think she deserves worse, just as she’s about to give up, she should be brought out, allowing her to catch her breath, then start all over again…
I often wonder what it is that can make a loser so lost in ignorance hurt an innocent. Is it the power trip? The look in the child’s eyes? I’m curious because you hear these awful things about the sorry POS’s that do these things and when taken into custody they are all tears. Where are the tears when they are commiting this crime? When the child is shedding their first tear or when the baby is grasping at air, eyes all big not knowing what is going on just that something isn’t right. I can’t stand to think that the last thing they see is the monster that they were supposed to trust. I’m going to keep my baby close by my side!

I too cannot understand how someone could watch their baby drown. It is natural instinct to throw your hand across your child in the front seat when you put on your brakes. You don’t think about it and you automatically reach for your child when you see them falling down. I can’t imagine inflicting that kind of pain on a child.
I’d like to know what it was that made the investigators suspicious… After all, some women find adjusting to motherhood very difficult, esp if they have been left to raise the child alone, are depressed etc… I’m sure a lot of young mums experience the odd pang of regret when the penny drops that their party days are over, but MOST DONT KILL THEIR KIDS! FFS! This is really disturbing on every level, why was there not some kind of supervision if she was in a school for EBD? By the way, are there any updates for this story?
