They get a one time payment of about $1,000 per family to get settled in, then they have to apply for cash welfare, medicaid, and food stamps - those programs are all income-based. If I remember correctly, there is a short-term cash assistance just for refugees. Most of the refugees followed a standard plan (regardless of where they came from): 1. Find a home 2. Find furnishing for home 3. Enroll kids in school 4. Every family member over 14 years old got a job 5. Save enough money from work to get a car/van 6.
