This is 52-year-old David Workman, enjoying himself while supporting local girls trying to get through college.
Apparently, David Workman is a regular at this club.
A guy has to have a hobby, you know?
Most recently, David Workman has been one of three part-time investigators for the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. David Workman has been an employee there for the past seven years.
On the 2nd of June, 2008, a 51-year-old man named Joseph VerStraten was riding his motorcycle when a pickup truck went over the center line and hit Mr. VerStraten head-on. This collision killed Joseph VerStraten and, because the county coroner’s office has to get blood samples from anyone killed in a vehicle collision in order to find out if there’s any alcohol or drugs in the victim’s blood, Joseph VerStraten was brought to David Workman.
David took Joseph’s blood, then helped himself to the dead guy’s wallet and pocketed one of Joseph’s credit cards.
Two days later, on the 4th of June, 2008, David Workman went back to the strip club, where he used the credit card to purchase the attention of several strippers. With the diligent attention to detail that only strip-club managers are known for, a manager at the club noticed that the name on the credit card that David Workman was using wasn’t, in fact, “David Workman,” but instead read “Joseph VerStraten.” When questioned by the manager about the discrepancy, David Workman said that Joseph VerStraten was his brother-in-law.
In all, David Workman charged $430 that night on the dead man’s credit card in three different transactions. He had a good time and the girls loved him for a while, which is as it should be in a strip club.
A few days later, some of Joseph VerStraten’s family members noticed that Joseph had been a bit financially active for a dead man. Because dead men tell no tales, they contacted the Ohio State Patrol, who contacted Weirton Police Department detectives, who started an investigation.
The owners of the strip club were remarkably helpful, processing the security footage of the incident and turning all that nice evidence in to the police. According to a police spokesman:
They were a great help. They went out of their way to make sure we got this evidence. Not only did it cost them the money he spent, but getting the footage ready probably cost some money as well.
The evidence was enough to get a warrant for David Workman, who turned himself in on the 20th of June, 2008. Investigators questioned David, who admitted to taking the credit card while he was working on the victim.
Reporters who questioned Mr. Workman were told that the card was “not intentionally used.”
In addition to being charged with felony fraud charges, David Workman lost his job. Dr. John Metcalf, the Jefferson County coroner, announced that he fired Workman on the 20th of June, 2008:
I thought he was an honorable man.
Well, guess not, huh?

In a situation like this, who pays the bill in the end? I mean, obviously Mr. Workman must make restitution eventually, but in the meantime, is it Mr. VerStraten’s estate who pays? Or his surviving relatives? Does the credit card company absorb it?
I’m actually writing a book wherein my protagonist uses his dead father’s credit card to pay for a round-trip flight to Greece. When he is upbraided for his he was like, “Well, I’ll pay the bill out of my inheritance anyway, so…”

Identity theft in the grave. Insult to injury if you ask me. David Workman is an ass.

I know this guy that kept eating the Meals on Wheels that were being delivered to his mother’s house after she died, got a phone and apartment in her name and then had his kids selling stickers to “raise” money for the victims of the Von Maur shootings. The list goes on. Pretty cheesy, scummy bullshit. Didn’t think anybody could top him in the douchebag department. I was wrong.

I worked at a liquor store (called “package” stores in Alabama), and we had a guy who wrote bad checks on his dead mom’s account for whiskey. Shit happens all the time, just generally it’s a relative and not a complete stranger who gets ripped off post-mortem.
I don’t know about hell. Jail for sure. Public mockery and no luck finding another job, absoutely.

the guy’s pretty stupid, even a complete idiot knows you can’t use a dead man’s credit card (at least not when the corpse is in the friggin morgue!)

What’s the big fuc*ing deal? VerStraten didn’t need the credit card anymore.
What they should’ve done was go to VerStraten’s home and if the find even a shread of porn, then it’s agreed that Workman used his CC in a way that would make VerStraten smile in his grave.

It’s not so much that it was wrong as it was just cheesy. What a fucking loser. He deserves our ridicule. People that steal from the dead are just losers - no other way to put it.

I would agree it’s not as big a deal as, say, throwing a puppy over a cliff, but it is wrong and illegal. Credit card companies have to eat this kind of fraud, which gives them the excuse to raise interest rates for the rest of us.
And what an idiot. He was asking to get caught.

To the people who said nice things I would like to say thank you. To the people who were ignorant enough to say pretty rude things what if it was your dad? My dad was a VERY honorable man who deserved better from someone in a “trusted” position. Also saying it was no big deal he was dead anyhow.. OMG.. My mom found this out the day of the funeral and spent hours on the phone trying to deal with it.. The credit card company does’nt just write it off like you think, she is still dealing with it to this day. People should really think before they speak you never know who will read it.. myself and my mother just accidently stumbled upon this site and read these comments my mom had to walk away because she was apalled by the porn comment. Cmon people its not funny to even joke like that. The “hell” question.. I personally believe he should be in jail forever then I think he will get what he deserves in his after life I think he will be judged much harsher then, than now. I just saw him in court last week and he said, “I got a bum rap”. This man is a thief, liar and God knows what else. And what do you all think about the guy being a regular at a strip club then knowing he is alone with dead women? Gives me a VERY bad feeling. Think this is the first time this has happened? This man has done alot of very bad things and I think my dad would do it all over again if maybe just maybe it is stopping him from hurting another person.

The Internet, a new meaning to reach out and touch someone. Give mom a big hug and tell her that I’m not as bad as a Fred Phelps. If this was your dads memorial webpage, my comment would’ve been totally different.

To me it’s theft, identity fraud.
The ID fraud should be obvious, if not you are a dolt.
This man was stealing from an estate which is something that will be divided up and then become other peoples’ property. By stealing from the estate, those people will get less.
If you still do not see my point, them imagine your parents die and their house is vacant for a while. While vacant theive break in and help themselves to whatever they want. Family heirlooms are gone, not like your parents are going to miss them, so who looses?
Still theft to me. While this act may not be hell worthy, it’s obvious to me that this guy is scum.
