This charming newlywed is 23-year-old Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong.
Married in May of 2008, Phiengchai Synhavong is a plus-size Laotian woman who is awfully handy with a knife.
Despite what she told her family members, and despite her rather rotund physique, Phiengchai Synhavong was not pregnant, although she had…plans…to…acquire….a baby.
On the 27th of June, 2008, the plan of Phiengchai Synhavong came together, much like the plans of that elite military group known as The A-Team, but with a lot more blood.
After enticing an acquaintance, 27-year-old Araceli Camacho Gomez, into her white 4×4 with the promise of some baby clothes, Phiengchai Synhavong somehow managed to overpower the 9-month-pregnant mother of two - which is not entirely surprising considering how vulnerable extremely pregnant women are.
After a struggle, Araceli Gomez ended up with her hands and feet tied with yarn and a gag in her mouth.
While Araceli Gomez watched in absolute abject terror, Phiengchai Synhavong brandished a box cutter-like craft knife and started in on the grisly work of cutting the 9-month-old baby boy out of the womb of the pregnant woman.
Lots of “Ow” there.
Really, we can only imagine the pain Araceli Gomez felt while being cut open, a pain which could only be ellipsed by the pain of knowing that the baby she had spent the better part of a year growing inside her was soon going to be taken into the care of the woman who was doing the killing.
Araceli Gomez, who lives in a small apartment with her husband Juan Campos - a migrant field worker - and their two children, died from blood loss after Phiengchai Synhavong pulled the baby out of her womb and delivered four strikes to Araceli’s chest with the box cutter.
With the bloody baby boy in her arms and the body of Araceli Gomez in her back seat, Phiengchai Synhavong drove off to a recreation area. After finding a likely spot, Ms. Synhavong dumped the corpse out of the SUV and, at 11:04 P.M., made a phone call to 911. After telling the 911 operator that she had just given birth in a parking lot by a J.C. Penny store, Phiengchai Synhavong mentioned that she thought the baby had died.
Paramedics responding to the call weren’t able to find Phiengchai Synhavong, but a second call that she made a few minutes later allowed the medical personnel to find her - parked in a shopping mall parking lot.
According to medical personnel, Phiengchai Synhavong had a death grip on a piece of umbilical cord.
A fire captain who arrived on the scene looked through the back of the woman’s SUV, which was covered with a “significant amount of blood and pieces of human tissue,” and pulled the baby boy out of the driver’s side of the rear door - which is a place you should never put your baby if you plan on keeping it fresh.
The baby and the apparent mother were both taken to a local hospital. The baby survived the encounter and was put on life support. Tests were run on the “mother,” tests which showed that Phiengchai Synhavong had definitely not just given birth.
Police, after finding out that the woman who had the baby in her car was not the mother of the baby, realized that somewhere out there, someone was missing a baby. They started looking for reports of missing pregnant women and quickly came across the missing persons report that Araceli Gomez’s husband had filed just a few hours prior. At about 9 that night, Juan Campos and the children had come home to their apartment and found the door open, the lights on and the phone missing.
A search of Phiengchai Synhavong’s purse revealed blue mechanic’s gloves soaked in blood, bloody paper towels, a box cutter, yarn, a baby bottle and baby socks. You can be sure that the defense lawyer assigned to the case of Phiengchai Synhavong will try to argue that those items can be found in any woman’s purse and that they’re not at all unusual.
The body of Araceli Gomez was found by police at about 1 in the morning as they searched through Columbia Park Trail. Going through cell phone records, police discovered that the location where Araceli Gomez was found was the same location that Phiengchai Synhavong had originally called 911 from - not the J.C. Penny parking lot as she wanted police to believe.
Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong has been charged with first-degree murder. She is eligible for the death penalty.
The baby remained in critical condition as of the 2nd of July, 2008.

Well, usually in cases like this, they will let the surviving parent stay (there is a way to get citizenship if you have been affected by violent crime). The article did mention he was a migrant worker, but did not necessarily mention his immigration status.
The children are young and were probably born here…in Cali, that would give the parents grounds to stay. I just feel so bad for the entire family.
Maybe she chose this woman because she thought no one would care due to her potential immigration status?
