This is Derrick Vanlanot.
Derrick Vanlanot and his wife Sandra Vanlanot have been doing some relatives a favor by watching Derrick’s niece, 3-year-old Clara Slayton, since January of 2008.
On the 27th of June, 2008, their childcare egg timer went off with a “ding.”
At about half-past 10 in the morning on that day, which happens to be a Friday, Clara Slayton got up and complained about her stomach aching. She didn’t want to eat breakfast because her tummy was sore.
Clara Slayton’s grandmother, doing what grandmothers have been doing for years and years, gave her two glasses of water and half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Sadly, this gesture of love did nothing to help little Clara Slayton.
Instead of eating the sandwich and drinking the water, Clara Slayton started to throw up and fell to the floor.
911 was called and Clara Slayton was taken to a local hospital, where medical care was given. While the little girl was being treated, medical personnel noticed that there were some definite signs of physical abuse on her.
After interviewing the family, Derrick Vanlanot was arrested and charged with felony child abuse.
Despite treatment, Clara Slayton got worse and was transferred to another hospital. That hospital could do no more than the first, and Clara Slayton died on the 28th of June, 2008.
Cause of death?
Blunt force trauma.
After Clara Slayton’s death, the charges against Derrick Vanlanot were upgraded to first-degree murder.
Authorities believe that Derrick Vanlanot had been abusing his niece for at least several months.

He had promise and potential. I was hoping he’d be one of the bathroom service guys.

Sigh……too many little ones are getting beaten and killed these days. It makes me want to cry. Innocents are being abused and mistreated and it just makes me sick to think of them wondering why a grownup that they trust is doing bad things to them. I know derrick’s dad, if you can call him that. He is a convicted sexual predator and had abused his kids. many of the assalts on them are absolutely unimaginable. I blame him for most of the kid’s problams. I wish the kid’s would have reported him once he left the state of n.c. so prosicute him. I have their inheritances here with me. I would like for them to recieve them, and begin the healing process. Kid’s you are no longer under his thumb. It’s time to heal.
