This is Derrick Vanlanot.
Derrick Vanlanot and his wife Sandra Vanlanot have been doing some relatives a favor by watching Derrick’s niece, 3-year-old Clara Slayton, since January of 2008.
On the 27th of June, 2008, their childcare egg timer went off with a “ding.”
At about half-past 10 in the morning on that day, which happens to be a Friday, Clara Slayton got up and complained about her stomach aching. She didn’t want to eat breakfast because her tummy was sore.
Clara Slayton’s grandmother, doing what grandmothers have been doing for years and years, gave her two glasses of water and half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Sadly, this gesture of love did nothing to help little Clara Slayton.
Instead of eating the sandwich and drinking the water, Clara Slayton started to throw up and fell to the floor.
911 was called and Clara Slayton was taken to a local hospital, where medical care was given. While the little girl was being treated, medical personnel noticed that there were some definite signs of physical abuse on her.
After interviewing the family, Derrick Vanlanot was arrested and charged with felony child abuse.
Despite treatment, Clara Slayton got worse and was transferred to another hospital. That hospital could do no more than the first, and Clara Slayton died on the 28th of June, 2008.
Cause of death?
Blunt force trauma.
After Clara Slayton’s death, the charges against Derrick Vanlanot were upgraded to first-degree murder.
Authorities believe that Derrick Vanlanot had been abusing his niece for at least several months.

I know derrick’s dad, if you can call him that. He is a convicted sexual predator and had abused his kids. many of the assalts on them are absolutely unimaginable. I blame him for most of the kid’s problams. I wish the kid’s would have reported him once he left the state of n.c. so prosicute him. I have their inheritances here with me. I would like for them to recieve them, and begin the healing process. Kid’s you are no longer under his thumb. It’s time to heal.

I was physically abused by my father. His reasoning was that it was the only way he knew as his father abused him.
My dad did not teach me how to be a good parent, but i learned how NOT to be a bad one.
I was determined from the time i concieved my first child, that i would never do to my children what my father did to me and my sibling. And i never have.
I feel really bad that Derrick’s father hurt him and his siblings when they were children. But all sympathy for Derrick left when he made the choice to beat a child.

We are happy Mulch, but it didnt come easily. I made a lot of mistakes along the way believe me.
After wittnessing and experiencing abuse as a child i went on to be in an abusive relationship. I had two sons to this man. I put up with the abuse, because i never thought things would be any better. When he hurt my oldest son i left…that day.
Six months later my ex decided that he wanted me back and when i said no he broke into my house and waited for me to get home. He kept me and my sons in that house for a week straight. I copped beatings every day, and there were numerous other terrible things that happened that week. He passed out drunk on the seventh night and i grabbed my boys and ran.
He begged me to forgive him and his family made it seem as if it was my fault, because if i had taken him back, he would not have lost the plot. I almost relented. But one look at my precious boys and i knew i could not subject them to a life of abuse. I could’nt risk them growing up to carry on the abuse either. So i pressed charges against him and after four years of court hearings and a lengthy trial he was sentenced to 12 years jail.
He has had nothing to do with my boys since then and i think i would kill him before i let him near them.
I learned things the hard way. I spent months in hospital after the attack and both myself and my kids have undergone therapy.
Now im married to a fantastic man, who would never hurt me or my children and i have had three more children.
We all are accountable for our own actions in life.
Like i said, i made some bad choices. Now i spend every day trying to make up for that week of hell that my sons had to wittness.
Amy, I am so glad the laws are so much different for you than from when Derrick and his mom and siblings were growing up. A mom with 5 kids just had no where to go and she dealt with it as best as she could. Clara, was a courageous mom she protected her children with a ferocity and with such dilligence. I really comend her, even though she had passed away before I knew her. I love her children. I did prosecute derrick’s dad. He is a convicted predatory sex offender. But the damage has been done. It is the mothers who say this obuse must stop, I don’t see many men at all saying these words about their own lives. Instead I am hearing more abusive language. By the way The courts plea bargained his case three times, so he basically got just four years probation. But He can never be around children legally for the rest of his life.
Erm…i’m 34…im guessing by his looks that Derrick is around the same age, give or take a few years. That means the laws would have been the same for both of us as we were growing up.

Hmmm…for one, i would never let my 11 year old onto a site like this. That is why there are parental controls for the internet. Some you can download for free. You really should look into getting one, not just to protect you daughter from this site, but also from many chat rooms that are frequented by pedophiles.
Your daughter does not need to be reminded of the bad times. What has happened can not be undone, and she obviously knows the details…. its unfair that she has lost out and suffered because of her fathers actions. That children get caught up in the termoil that follows crimes like this is sad.

Keep reminding your daughter of the good times. Protect her as much as you are able from all the bad in the world and keep her out of sites like this.

As for why i come on this site..well i volunteer part of my week at a womens refuge. The rest of my week is spent working as a mentorfor troubled and abused children at my local primary school.

The family including myself knew nothing about what was going on with Clara because we live 9 and 10 hours away. The entire family was at our house in April for a week at which time I bathed and dressed this child and there were no signs along with he was alway’s a wonderful father to his other two children in the home and all the children flocked to him and his wife and loved over them all the time. We the family know the entire story along with the investigators that we still continue to talk with. These are some of the things I know and why I say to shut your mouth if you don’t know the facts. No one on this site knows the facts or what even happened which is clear by everyone saying he beat her to death when that is not at all what happened. I cannot disclose any information as told to us the family by investigators. The main people to blame in this situation is Child Services because if they would have run the investigation as they were suppose to they would have never even thought of placing her in this home. Also to clarify another thing the only reason I came to this site is becasue we were told about it and how stepmom had posted a comment that she had family belongings she wanted to return and wanted to try to get in touch with the family that’s the only reason. We want to be in touch with her. Again thank you for the things you do for your community and innocent lives and may others follow in those footsteps of yours.

first of all this is not Wendy. I am another family member on her account. Second I didn’t say he didn’t do it all I said is that she did not die from being beaten and that we know because of the information given to us from the investigators. I absolutely know he did it and he deserves everything he gets because there is nothing that can ever justify what he did; NOTHING. My biggest thing with this whole hateful, nasty, judgemental site is until you think you know someone and love them and be raised with them and then be blindsided with them doing something so horrible and lose a child you loved please don’t judge me. My family and I have been absolutely devastated and continue to be each day so the last thing we need is folks that want to not only be nasty to the person that deserves it but also to all of us. Amy thank you for your words of kindness and you are truly correct this is not a site for family members because we do get our feelings hurt and the only reason Wendy and I came here was because we were told about the stepmom comment and want to be in contact with her. I have not had anything to do with Derrick and plan on never having anything to do with Derrick again other than making sure that he pays for what he has done. As for the beating thing yes he did beat on her some but that was not the cause of her death it was other things which I can’t say because of investigations still going on and their being no trial yet but we the family were told by the investigators but no the beating is not what killed her. The truth of the matter is Derrick Vanlanot is a worth scum sucking piece of garbage who could best serve society if he were used to determine how much pressure the human body could withstand before bursting while in a garbage compressor.
