James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings
This is 19-year-old James Broadnax.
James Broadnax is a hardcore entrepreneur. A drug dealer, thief and gang member, James Broadnax knows where the money is and he knows how to get it.
Not wanting to get a paper route or other job so that he could actually earn the things he wanted, on the 18th of June, 2008, James Broadnax and his 19-year-old cousin, Demarius Cummings, hopped on a bus to Garland, Texas – a suburb of Dallas, Texas with a large caucasian population.
Why Garland?
Well, according to James Broadnax, if you’re going to rob somebody, you go where the money is:
One of the best spots is Garland because that’s where all the rich, white people stay at.
You can’t really argue with that kind of logic at all. Way to help support the development of the human race, Mr. Broadnax.
Demarius Cummings and his cousin James, who had smoked marijuana before getting on the bus to Garland, disembarked at their scheduled stop and began to stalk the area.
At about thirty minutes past midnight, 28-year-old Christian recording studio owner Matthew Butler, and his 26-year-old best friend and chief engineer Stephen Swan called it quits for the day and started to shut things down so they could go home. Matthew Butler called his wife, Jamie, right before locking up and heading out, telling her that he would be home soon and that he loved her.
As you have already guessed, the paths of Matthew Butler and Stephen Swan crossed those of James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings, as the studio owner and his friend stood by their cars in the parking lot, enjoying a cigarette.
James Broadnax and his cousin walked up to the two friends. Demarius Cummings asked for a cigarette and all hell broke loose.
According to James Broadnax, he pulled out a pistol that he’d traded for an old AK-47 and first opened fire on Butler before shooting Swan:
I just blanked the fuck out. I shot him and he stumbled back. I shot the driver. He hit the ground, you know what I’m saying, but he leaned up like he was going to try to get back up, so I shot him in the head.
Because when you’re robbing someone, the last thing you want them to do is survive, you know? Because it’s so much more hardcore that way.
James Broadnax became annoyed when Matthew Butler tried to stagger away:
Then his homeboy, I shot his ass again, you know what I’m saying, but he was still trying to run off. I knew he was going to die anyway, but just to make sure — pop, pop.
Yes, indeed. After one pop and another pop, Matthew Butler had two neat little holes in his head and James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings had themselves a nice new car as they helped themselves to the possessions of their dead victims. Demarius found a wallet and car keys on Stephen Swan, but the wallet only had $2, so he felt kind of bad about that.
Still.
Hey.
They had a car now, you know?
And yes, they left two men dead in the parking lot to be found, lying in pools of their own blood at 1 that morning by someone passing by on a bicycle- but really it was a combination of factors that led to the deaths.
- Matthew Butler and Stephen Swan had stuff
- James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings didn’t have stuff
So you can see why the murders weren’t really the fault of Demarius or James, right?
According to Demarius Cummings, who seems to be trying to set himself up in the eyes of the court as the good cousin:
We didn’t plan to shoot nobody and nothing like that. No, I take that back. I did tell him we’d probably have to pop them a few times or whatever. I did. But still, I didn’t think he was going to do it. I ain’t never seen nobody die like that, you know. It kind of shocked me, you know what I’m saying. I was shook.
Yes, we hear what you’re saying, Demarius. You were shook. Most people never experience that feeling, because most people don’t go around killing other people and taking their money.
Despite being “all shook up,” James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings managed to retain enough animal cunning to drive to an aunt’s house, where they changed out of their clothes. That done, the pair drove to the house of a girlfriend of Demarius, where they hid the pistol.
After finding a handy pawnshop and pawning some tools that the pair found in Stephen Swan’s car, a quick theft of some license plates meant that Demarius and James could hit the road with impunity.
Until the 20th of June, 2008, when they were pulled over and arrested.
After the cousins were brought into the police station and interviewed, Demarius Cummings (who seems to be the only one with even the tiniest capability of long-term thought) announced that he now knows that murder is bad.
I feel real bad, you know. I feel it was wrong what we did. I contributed to it but I didn’t kill them, though.
Whatever makes you feel good about yourself, Mr. Cummings.
James Broadnax was slightly less compassionate than his cousin, complaining that he never had anything nice when he was growing up and that his life had been Hell.
I kind of regret what I did, but things can’t change so no use crying over it.
James Broadnax kept the positive vibes flowing when he was asked what he would say to the families of the victims:
Fuck ‘em. Straight up.
Charming. To the last.
Both cousins have been charged with first-degree murder. The death penalty is on the table. James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings have each been given a $1,000,000 bond, which might as well be $1,000,000,000, really.

This happened in walking distance from my home and even then I wasn’t afraid. Obviously they guys were caught within 2 days so I’m going to go ahead and say my feelings of security are just.

I will never defend a senseless murder on any innocent victim. james broadnax aka jbeats didnt have a horrible record growing up…although he did grow up being poor and living with his grandmother and his mom not givin a damn about him….all he had was his grandmother and his brother…and his friends…oneday his grandmother who was just about the only person he could rely on decides to move out of Hope Arkasas…he stays in Hope because his girlfriend doesn’t want him to leave her. . .they were living in a 3 bedroom trailer that they were sharing with 4 other people (2 couple) everything went fine until they all became job less…and could no longer pay rent. . . .where would they all go? I’ve heard that God forgives. You can’t have forgiveness if you don’t sincerely ask for it. He has to own what he did, and feel genuine remorse, and NEVER do anything like that again before God will forgive him. From what I hear, God isn’t as much of a pushover as some people make him out to be.
Every one of us, from white to black, rich to poor, has childhood woes that stick with us throughout our lives, influencing our decisions if we allow them to. I am sorry for him that his childhood was difficult. Truly, I am. That doesn’t change the fact that he chose the path he traveled, just like the rest of humanity chooses theirs. I was sometimes verbally/emotionally abused by my father because he never wanted a girl, he wanted all boys instead. Did I ever once think about taking the trip up the street to, how should I put it, oh, I’ll use one of your coward brother’s terms: “rob rich white folk”? I mean they were THERE. Scarsdale, NY is just a few minutes drive from Brooklyn. No, I did not. I was smarter than that, better than that. This is what probably happened. The wife doesn’t like her man smoking, so he took a quick puff before he went home. Yeah, he couldn’t go home and do it because she’d give him hell. So he chilled out with his friend enjoying a smoke. Damn. What would’ve happened if he quit smoking long ago? Oh and ex/cons love cigarettes. They trade it abundantly in prison.
So, the bad guys saw candy (cigarettes) and ultimately this was one of the deciding factors in their heist.
Protect yourself. Smoke in private where no bad guys can see you or just don’t smoke at all.

Matthew Butler and Steven Swan were some type of Christian Music producers – nice people that dealt with nice people who may have believed that enough love, tolerance and acceptance will make anyone in the world nice – that may be the reason that they did not have a gun on them.
While I do not wish to blame the victims for what happened to them, as Christians they should open their eyes to see that their God’s son was crucified – 2000 years has not changed the fact that there are just some plain nasty people out there.
This is a racially motivated crime – the best word to describe these two is Nigger – they fit the stero-type too well – the specifically intended to target white people because white people simply get more stuff. The lack of remorse of these two so called “tough guys” makes it seems that they felt even after all was said and done that the lives of the hardworking men they killed were not worth as much as the $2 and getaway car they ended up with. Their crime took away the lives of two husbands/sons/fathers/ productive members of societies and left their families without them. Such a crime disgusts and shocks me, hope Texas puts the two animals responsible for this crime down. They’re not worth the resources put into keeping them alive.

Lisa, the detectives said that they don’t like to give the death penalty to 19 year olds. They are just so young and innocent, you know. This was shocking to me. These two have been criminals for a long, long time. Cummings had just gotten out of jail after being convicted of burglary and robbery. I thought the age of accountability was around 7 years old. We can only pray that they get the death penalty. My son was an amazing man. A strong Christian, loving father and husband and the best son anyone could ever wish for. I personally know more blacks who are respectable, responsible and good people than I know “ghetto” trash. But she is pretty clearly saying that she only applies that stereo-type to the people who act in certain ways. I don’t think that she (or most people these days) sees all black people as pimpin’ drug dealers and crack ho’s. But when a person is acting like a pimp or a crack ho – it’s almost impossible to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I think the racism of old is pretty much gone, except in the truly ignorant. The way the word stereo-type is used in my world is much more defined. Let me give a little story – my 17 year old daughter has a friend who was raised in this “everyone is exactly the same” environment. One day, her friend was driving through town, and they stopped at a red light. There was a seedy looking guy on the corner (and honestly – I never even asked what race he was – she just said he was shady looking). My daughter discreetly hit the door locks. Her friend berated her for that – saying that it was rude and that he was “probably” perfectly safe. Well, as far as I am concerned, my daughter did the right thing. Of course the man could have been perfectly harmless, but her instinct said that it was not a good risk to take. Her friend, on the other hand, was more worried about “offending” someone than about her own safety.
It’s not about etiquette, it’s more about social norms I guess. What constitutes “seedy” looking is a matter of opinion I guess, but there are some people who just fit that description by almost anyone’s standards.
Anyway, interestingly, this friend is a little racist, although she would freak out if anyone told her that. During a discussion about “boys” she said that she wants to date “a black guy”. Not a specific black boy – just any black guy, to experience it. That is so hypocritical, IMO. In her efforts to appear “tolerant”, she actually is doing exactly what I taught my daughter not to do. Instead of being color BLIND, she is going overboard to prove that she is not a racist.

I have compassion to some degree or another, for almost every one of these criminals. Very few choose to be evil, even the sickest and most horrible ones. They make choices to DO evil, but not to BE evil.
They were once little children, and more than likely, some really bad shit happened to them as kids that they couldn’t deal with, and they accepted evilness in. I even feel bad in some ways for that beast who killed that family so he could kidnap/rape the little kids up in Idaho – Joe Duncan, who is about a vile a human being as there is. But when you read about his life, his childhood, it is one of the saddest stories all the way around. His life was as dreadful as many of the stories of victims that we read here. Same with Richard Rameraz, or even Charles Manson.
But, the fact remains that these people must be punished and they MUST be removed from society. Once they move from “victim” to “agressor” they are no longer safe, and while I still have compassion, it can’t outweigh the harm that they have done, and the potential threat the are.
So – no ass kicking here. So long as you don’t say “I feel bad for him, let’s let him go unpunished”.

THAT is the sad part. Why can’t someone get through to them? Their parents? Their grandparents? Most likely the people who are responsible for guiding the kids through life are completely ill-equipped for responsible life themselves.
I don’t mean to be stereotyping, but I would guess that these guys have grandmothers who are close to the same age I was when I became a MOTHER. Their mothers were probably pregnant as teenagers, unmarried and in poverty. As were THEIR mothers and their mother’s mothers. And the men in their lives? Probably non-existant. Maybe an uncle or two between jail confinements, but chances are their male role-models were the gangsta’s on the street.
So, who is there to save these kids? Who can get through to the teenage girls that having babies is a serious thing? That it is not just a doll who will love you unconditionally, and that they need to give to the child, not the other way around.
Who can do this? Who WILL do this? Can it be done at all?

We each have a limited daily amount of energy to be distributed and I focus my finite compassionate, loving energy on the truly derserving: the innocent, vulnerable victims of predators.
In my opinion, and from my research done regarding psychopaths, narcissists, anti-socials, pathological criminals, etc., I have deduced that evil deeds/actions are a choice not an obligation.
There are many testimonials of women and men who have had less than stellar upbringings, suffering physical, emotional, psychological abuse and neglect from mentally ill/disordered parents and yet, they have maintained their conscience, their ability to love, their ability to live life with morals, values, scruples and with their precious souls intact.
I can vouch for these people as I am the product of a broken home and a psychopathic father.
I can firmly state that because of my sometimes dismal childhood, I am a better person, spiritually in tune, compassionate, loving, empathetic and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The struggle has been difficult but the lessons have been learned and appreciated.
Quick note – Garland is NOT the place to go for weathly people in Dallas. Garland is almost equivalent to a “little Mexico” in most areas. Other areas of Garland are businesses and older people who have lived there for many years. Of course all parts of Dallas have it’s “nice” spots and it’s not so “nice” spots or areas. The thing is that they blended in when they went to Garland with the rest of the wanna-be thugs looking to make a dishonest dollar or to get their “hustle” on as we say. Matthew was a kind, gentle, loving, giving, Christian man and his desire was for everyone to know Christ as their personal saviour. He desires that, we desire that, for these Animals. Yes, they deserve to die but Matthew will be the first to greet them at the gates of heaven if/when they make it there, I assure you of that. I pray for their souls and I hope that they repent and ask God to forgive them for what they did. God loves them and will forgive them just as He forgives us for our sins if we ask Him to. No one…not one of us…is perfect. Matthew and Steve were fine Christian men. They desired to serve the Lord. They wanted to make a difference in this world. They wanted to help build the Kingdom of God. When they arrived at heaven’s gate, their heavenly father said to them, “Well done thy good and faithful servants.” I’m sure of that. I will forever live my life to serve the Lord and put Him 1st in my life….just as Matthew and Steve did. If you haven’t given your life to the Lord Jesus Christ, don’t wait. Jesus said, “…No one comes to the Father but by me….” Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. We have the hope of an eternal life when we accept him as our saviour. I am a white guy, and him and his brother stayed with my family a while and he was never the type to kill or do things like that. im not trying to justify him, i know what he did and what he said, i seen the vid. but more than likely he was fucked up, cuz he may not have killed people before but of course he fucked around with some drugs. but in this day and age, who doesnt? more than likely he was on “that white bitch”, did too much and was lookin for more. I mean when i heard he did it and watched the vid i just kept thinking, how could he do that? he would never just shoot someone, let alone a stranger. if nobody fucked with him, he never fucked with them. I am one of the biggest supporters of people’s rights to hold differing opinions, so long as those opinions are not attempts to silence others based on their own personal beliefs. Regardless, even the most ignorant and self-absorbed posters don’t affect me personally.
OK, so we have established that you really don’t understand English (or open mindedness) well. Lets move on.
If you get offended by things that people say on this board, there is an easy solution. Leave. I don’t like overt racism either, and like many other regular posters here, I will attack the vile comments. But if I didn’t feel like attacking them, I would ignore it. I am not going to let a few ignorant people’s ignorant ideas wipe out the purpose of this site. HOWEVER – in your initial post, you did not qualify that there are only a tiny handful of these offensive posters. You indicated (by default) that most, if not all, of us spew hatred.
You seem to have a real disconnect with the role of society. You said “It amazes me that you, who knew no one connected to this case is so ready and willing to KILL or see these young men KILLED”. You see, Sad, this IS the role of society. We are all supposed to band together to handle the bad guys. We DON’T leave it to the hands of the actual victims, which would be unfair. This is why, when a crime s committed, it is the STATE that brings the charges, not the victim. Because crimes are crimes against SOCIETY, not against the victims. Thus, being a part of “society” we all have the right (maybe even the obligation) to make our opinions known.

But the hate certainly CAN drive the initial decision to make something good happen. According to your initial post, hate is a bad thing, and I simply believe that only unfettered hate is necessarily bad.

I made it clear that I was speaking of those who were making hateful statements such as the oak tree statement. That may be what you believe, and what you feel, but go reread what you wrote. No one can guess what you mean, and you absolutely did not qualify any of your accusations with “some”, “a few” or anything like that. Instead it was quite accusatory towards, well… everyone who posts here.

Others may wish to just sit back and hate these murdering creeps. And others may want to hate the killers, and STILL help others. Never did I say your opinions were wrong because they are just that opinions. Now before you jump into some water make sure you know what is in it TITO. Do me a favor READ what was actually typed here and then form a valid opinion on what I said, and if you can’t then avoid what I have to say. And how do you know what is being done by the people on this site the only difference between you and those two guys is that your skeletons are still in the closet. I completely respect you and your response to my comment that was made here. I do believe that some people can come to this site and others like this one and see it for what it really is and know that it is simply a means to let go of stress that cases like this one causes. However you and I both know that sense is not common, and even though (which I believe) your aim is to release stress there are others looking to validate their hate and motives.
You overlook the context of wrong, so maybe you should “READ” what was meant. I meant wrong in the sense that we stated opinions of what you said, not that what was being said itself was wrong. How can you stand on your soapbox and berade someone here for using the site for “enhance your twisted views of others lives”, when you sit there and tell us that what we do is “the beginning of hate that will lead us to actions.” So in that context, you’re guilty of the same thing you tell us is wrong.

OK, here’s the problem. You are applying how YOU personally deal with hate, and your personal beliefs about hate, to every single other person. You are not taking into consideration that everyone has a different reaction to external events and internal emotions.
For example (relevant to PYSIH in fact), some people are abused as children and grow up to abuse their own kids. Other people grow up to become anti-abuse crusaders. Do you see why it’s not possible to paint everyone with the same brush?
There are people on PYSIH who go pretty far overboard in discussing what they would like to do to the various perverts we profile. But that is their prerogative. If it makes you uncomfortable (as it sometimes does to me) then skip over it. Other people have the right to express their anger, even if it’s not the way I would. And, if it ever gets to the point where it’s too much, I will leave.

Unlike some of you people on this website, I was always taught by my parents to judge people not on the color of their skin (or religion), but by their character, which resulted in me not only marrying a black man but also by calling a dumb ass as a dumb ass. It’s a horrible feeling to know someone you love and that is a part of your family is capable of commiting such a horrible act. Hang on to your memories of him being a “wonderful person”, that’s your right to do. I don’t think you insult the world by saying it nor do I believe you’re stupid. It takes an intelligent and reasonable person to realize that your brother did in fact ruin not only his own life, but that of his victims and their families. I understand where you were coming from in your post and I do agree. It’s not very often I see family/friends on here that have a realistic view concerning those featured here. It sucks and it’s a betrayal when someone you love commits a brutal crime (personal experience there). First instinct is to get in defense mode (hence the large ammount of “INNOCENT TILL PROVEN GUILTY” “WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE” “GOD WILL JUDGE THEM”…yada yada and so on). Pulls on my heart a little when I see a rational post from one of the indirect victims of these crimes.
