Help The Family Of Murder Victim Matthew Butler

We’ve been gone for a week due to training issues (have to re-certify in first aid, CPR and so on every year) so we haven’t been able to get up and writing as much as we would like. We do, however, answer our mail and read all the comments that people make on the site. One such e-mail sent to us contained the following:

Thanks for including the article about Matthew Butler and Steve Swan. I live in Rockwall, Texas which is near Garland and was horrified by these murders. If two young white men had gunned down two honorable black men for $2 and an old car it would have received national media attention and blacks would be marching in the streets demanding the blood of the murders. However since it was the reverse it received only a few articles in the local papers and now seems to have quickly faded from memory.

The Garland News is assisting with a fund for the widow and orphans of Mr.
Butler – perhaps you can include this information on your excellent site.

    Absolutely.

If you have some spare cash laying around and were thinking about donating some of it to some worthy cause, you may want to consider donating that cash to help out the remaining kin of Matthew Butler, who was shot and killed by James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings in June of 2008.

While Steve Swan was unmarried and had no children, Matthew Butler left behind a 22-year-old wife named Jamie, a 2-year-old son named Matthew Jr. and a 1-year-old baby daughter named McKayla.

As you can imagine, Jamie Butler’s financial situation has become somewhat troublesome with the senseless loss of her husband.

If you would like to help Jamie Butler and her two children through this difficult time, you can make a donation to the family by mailing it to:

    The Garland News
    1621 S. Jupiter Road
    Garland, TX 75042

    or to

    The First National Bank
    2045 Forest Lane
    Garland, TX 75042

Make your check or money order payable to the “Jamie Butler Fund.”

You can also charge the donation to your credit card by calling the Garland News at 214-340-2323.

For more information, contact Jay Jones at the Garland News at 214-340-2323. He can also be reached at jay@TheGarlandNews.net.

      Absolutely beautiful wife and kids.
He was a lucky man. God bless him and condolences to his family.

      • God blessed us with Matthew. He was our angel. We have 28 years of wonderful memories. He will always be in our hearts. The support and prayers from people all over the US has been incredible. Jamie is so very young and is facing the future without Matthew’s help in raising their little ones…Matthew Garrett Jr and McKayla Grace. There have been memorial accounts set up at Well’s Fargo and Washington Mutual in the name of Matthew Butler Memorial Fund as well. And, there is going to be the “First Annual M.G. Butler Memorial Golf Tournament” at Eastern Hills Country Club in Garland, TX next Monday, August 4th. They still need participants, hole sponsors and silent auction items. More info at http://www.zgrecords.com Thank you so much for your support. God Bless You!!

I’ll truly miss Matthew.Last time I saw him he said,”come on by the studio and jam” I’m sorry we never got that chance.I am privileged that I knew you your 28 short years. My heart goes out to Theresa and Mike and Jamie and the kids. One day we will Jam together in Heaven with the best. Dean Jones Matts Uncle

Matthew was a great person. The nicest person anyone had the pleasure to meet.He was the first to call me when he found out I was sick.At Christmas every year he would take the family to the studio to record Christmas songs. That made every Christmas special.I’ll miss you so much!

    7. Rich Wilson says:

Ok, here’s a question for the family. Do you accept donations from gay black atheists?

      • SlimPickins says:

I’m sure they’re equal opportunity where the greenbacks are concerned. Aren’t we all?

      • Our God loves everyone. And, as followers of Jesus Christ, so do we. If a gay black atheist is moved and would like to help Jamie and the kids, then he/she should probably do so. May God Bless You and Yours! Theresa (Matthew’s mom)

      • Shamus Shafer says:

        Rich,
It wasn’t enough to just choose to donate or not? You had to throw out whatever it was you were trying to say instead? What part of “murdered for $2″ did you miss? Nobody cares if you’re from frickin’ Saturn and like llamas dude, its not about YOU, its about those two babies, that widow, those two boys and their families. God bless them all.

        • gollymolly says:

It’s soooo true. I cry as I type this because it’s not about US it’s about the FAMILY in time of need. Rich you should be ashamed of yourself! Stop looking in the mirror.

      • An1mal says:

WTF is wrong with you rich?

    8. MrEthiopian says:

Theresa, you’re a wonderful woman sorry about your loss.

Rich, I think the admin should open up a multiple choice on where you will end up.

This is so not true! Not only has it had nationwide attn but it’s still being talked about right here in Dallas. I now reside in Rowlett TX (Rockwall County) and I dont know what news source your watching but mine is still talking about this tradgedy! SO WHY DOES COLOR EVEN COME INTO PLAY HERE?????????? So not right as there are MANY non-white people who are horrified by what happened. I think the majority of black people were sickened by the attitude that the one young man displayed as if they had a right to take someones life to fill their needs. How can you even look in the mirror at ones self everyday with that type of mentality?! If it was a white on white killing would it have been any less tragic??????? ENOUGH with the color issue. No one deserves to be victimized no matter what color they are!!!!! And I pray that justice preveils!

      • whiteiris says:

Good point enough of the color issue already! I must say though StraightouttaBigD I was not sure where you were going with that comment until I srolled to the 2nd paragragh. Phew! Breath in, now out. You talked alot about color yourself. So you my friend must being thinking about it as well. JK, I see what your saying. Anyway, I did not care about the discriptive comments in the articles regarding ethnicity of the killers if the term “Black” classifies as ethnicity. Really the part that got to me is the fact it was a senseless act over a desperation to ‘come up’ without working. No doubt to supply a drug habit to support. Drugs can make you do unimaginable things. It’s sad innocent people fall victim to this. No matter who they are or what color the druggie is who commited the crime. Society has a drug problem they can never control. However we can control who we subject society to. On that note I plead, “Moms raise your kids well. Teach them how to provide for themselves legally no matter what nationality you are and to stay away from drugs. You will also ahve to teach them how to love. You can only do this by showing them genuinelove and affection. That is all we can do.

Sorry I mis quoted you StraightouttaBigD, i did not read the other comment and mistook your comment as your comment. Not realizing you were actually referring to kdragoo’s earlier comment about Black guys and 2$. Ok, so it is now safe to say, kdragoo you are the one that made need a ‘Breath in, now out.’ Thanks for bringing the peace StraightouttaBigD. I feel ya.

    10. Marcie says:

its not a black/white issue..thanks StraightouttaBigD for bringing that to others attention…

i know this woman must be scared now, im her age and I have a 5 yr old and a 10 month old…what if daddy died, I wouldnt have time to cry for myself, id be spending all my tears on the poor children who wont grow to know their dad…

its a damn shame the shit that goes on these days

    11. An1mal says:

Right on Straight….race, color, or religion should have never entered into this at all. Justice is suppose to be blind, so i hope lady liberty has her blindfold on as these two fuckheads are escorted right to the chamber.
