Milton Harper and Patricia Harper
This is Milton Harper and his wife of 24 years, Patricia Harper.
Up until 2005, Milton and Patricia Harper used to have a big problem with their septic tank. For some reason, every time the area had rain the septic tank their house was connected to would throw raw sewage right back into their home.
Times are hard all over – especially when one spouse doesn’t work – and since Patricia Harper is a stay-at-home mom while Milton Harper runs his own home-security business, they never seemed to scrape enough money together to get that septic tank completely fixed.
And really, up until 2005 you had to feel for the Harpers. It can’t be good living in fear of rain and raw sewage.
Life took a dramatic turn for the better for Milton and Patricia Harper, however, when “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” selected their entry out of 15,000 competing entries and decided to transform the Harpers’ old, messed-up home into a really, really, really nice 5500 square-foot home. Seriously, their new home kicked all kinds of ass. Their vaulted great room featured antique hickory wood beams obtained from a 135-year-old dairy farm in Pennsylvania, for God’s sake.
Milton Harper got a new, completely furnished home office, along with a music room with recessed lighting, a place for eight turntables, and a nice “home studio” feel. There was also an adjoining room built to hold Milton Harper’s extensive album collection. Of course, the album collection so extensive could have possibly been sold at some point to pay for the desperately-needed septic tank repairs, but that would have been a case of a need trumping a want and that just won’t work.
Patricia Harper liked to play around with plants, so the Extreme Makeover team built her a solarium right off the kitchen so she wouldn’t have to, oh I don’t know…go outside?
Milton and Patricia Harper had a palatial master suite built that featured a sitting room with fireplace, a luxury bathroom complete with a large garden tub and a walk-in closet larger than my first apartment, with custom shelving and a second washer and dryer.
If you don’t have a second washer and dryer, you’re nobody. You might as well accept that now.
The three kids each had a room crafted for their interests. No expense was spared.
Of course, now that the house was worth more they’d get soaked for property taxes, so the Extreme Makeover team solved that problem for the Harpers as well. In addition to their new house being completely furnished, Milton Harper and Patricia Harper were given a large fund that would completely cover any taxes they would owe on the property for the next 25 years. The fund was also large enough to pay for all the Harper children to go to college.
Patricia Harper was, understandably, very happy with what had been given to them:

Milton and Patricia Harper were given a paid-off, completely-furnished mansion, a college trust fund, and total freedom from property taxes for the next 25 years. Essentially, they won the lottery, and that’s fine. Good for them! Someone has to be lucky.
Someone had to be greedy, too.
Milton and Patricia Harper got it into their minds that they wanted to start a construction business. They thought this would be a great idea despite the fact that there was a visible and sharp downturn in store for the housing and construction markets in their area. They decided to do this despite the fact that they had no experience with the construction business, no savings, and no way to really get things off the ground.
But they did have all that equity in their house…
Hmm.
To get their construction business off the ground, the Harpers decided to take a home equity mortgage out on their wonderful home, about a year after the Extreme Makeover team handed over the keys. As you may have guessed, the mortgage hasn’t been paid and Patricia and Milton Harper are now facing foreclosure.
Really.
The home that they’d been given, free and clear – free and clear from taxes even – is now going to be foreclosed on. The house that hundreds of their neighbors banded together to build, the house that so many people worked hard on with no expectation of reward, is in foreclosure.
How you can lose $450,000 in 15 months is beyond my feeble understanding, although I’d give it the old college try if you challenged and financed me. Take the home remodeling business, for example. You get a project, the client pays 50% up front. You buy materials. You do the job. You get paid the rest on completion. As long as you’re reasonably economical about things, both your up-front expenses and the risks involved are relatively low.
Unless, of course, you’re greedy. Like the Harpers.

As someone who has suffered through severe debt, I’ll go ahead and let you know that they are already in hell. Although I hope it does haunt them at night that they went about it in a way that says fuck you to everyone who helped them get that fantastic house.

Me and my husband just debated about this. He blamed the American Dream, the idea that everyone should go into business for themselves. I blamed a complete lack of business and financial sense and not knowing when to leave well enough alone.

You can post a critique without an air of ignorance. Black and white has nothing to do with this case. This is simple about a couple of people who made a very stupid mistake, which they now obviously regret. Both blacks and whites do studpid things. That is SO SAD. I am a single mom who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. I got nothing from FEMA but I did have flood and howowner’s insurance to rebuild my home. The first thing I did was to pay off my mortgage and than I started rebuilding my home. I am back in my house now although I don’t have furniture except for a bedroom set for me and one for my son. Some people don’t know or care about what they have especially when it is put at their feet. SHAME ON THE HARPER family. I do wish the Harper goods all the luck in the world having such unappreciative parents. Unless they can tell me the money was needed for medical, life or death care – they deserve whatever come their way. I see too many people (both old and young) here in Louisiana and Mississippi still living in FEMA trailers while trying to repair their moderate little homes. These people have an almost half a million dollar home given to them and they could not save it – just think of how many homes could have been rebuild with just basic necessary equipment and furnishings – it would have brought life and hope to many, many families in this area.

eh… I don’t think you can draw that conclusion based on one instance. Many people appreciate things they are given. The only valid conclusion you can draw from this is that the Harpers are fools. Don’t be that guy that looks at the one bad apple and brings down an entire species based on that.
How many episodes of this show have their been? And out of all of these, one couple behaves stupidly? If you build your argument on the Harpers, don’t all the other families actually disprove it?
While this deed may not merit hell, I am sure that if his is characteristic of their normal behavior, I am sure that they have done something hell worthy.
Like how was the money spent? If they were for real and stupid, then those who swindled them are hellbound. If they used the money for personnel stuff and immediate gratification then they may be hell bound as they took from others.
If they go on “assitance” hen they deserve hell for not taking responsibility for their own actions. If they invested in a company properly there should be enough assets that can be sold to cover a good part of their debt.

Sorry, that wouldn’t work. The house is custom to the Harpers. So the Extreme Makeover team would have to shell out another $450,000 to pay off the loan and not even get a show out of it. It’s a nice house though. I’m sure someone will pick it up cheap from the bank.
You forget, I think, that this show is about ratings. Without ratings, there’s no money for homes. You can’t just give a family an already-built home cuz you don’t get a show out of it.
I watch the show often and it has crossed my mind more than once what it would be like if they re-visted some of these families a few years down the line. Some of the homes they have “made over” were one hot mess. Not just falling apart, but down right filthy dirty. Some things you cannot change in the way people conduct their personal lives. IE: You can take a person out of the ghetto, but you cant take the ghetto out of the person. Look at all the movies that are based on this concept. Most of them are comedies. Fish out of water scenario’s.
I personally like the show. Its a good example of “dreams coming true” in America. I am sure that many of the families that benefited from this gift actually appreciate the gift and are thriving. This family was lucky to be chosen, and now they must live with their failure.

And the show does not care about how it ends up. Each show ends Happily Ever After and that’s that. A separate show on another channel would be funny revisiting these people to see how they made out.

The concept you refer to means that everyone, no matter who they are or who their parents are, has the opportunity to MAKE something of themself. Everyone has the opportunity to attend school – even college – for no cost, and to get a good job and attain unlimited success.
It’s easier for some people, but there are no limits in the US because of what family a stroke of fate caused you to be born into.
“Dreams coming true in America” is about OPPORTUNITY – not handouts.
Cinderella is a fairy tale and winning the lottery or a big lawsuit is not the same as working for the things that you get. That’s why women who marry for money end up divorced and depressed, and lottery winners end up broke in a few years. If they don’t have the personal substance and skills to make it on their own, throwing wads of cash at them won’t change much.
I think the “American Dream” is about independence and self-sufficiency, not “unlimited success”, 5500 sq ft houses, or wealth.

I saw that episode. The people on this show who do not have a handicapped child or a debilitating disease are just leaches. No better than welfare rats. Hell, I have a 7 year old and an 8 year old and I would love to be a stay-at-home mom, but it is not a possibility. I agree with you Dee 100%. I am almost 69 years old and my SS income, by the government standards, is below poverty level. I live from the 3rd of the month to the next 3rd of the month. I do without food because the money just does not stretch that far. I live in a 36 year old mobile home that is steadily falling apart. I have to crawl under the trailer to repair pipes and duct work. I have had to climb up on the roof to try and fix leaks. 3/4ths of my window I cannot open and many are broken and I had to put duct tape on them to hold them in and keep them from falling out. I worked all my life until I became disabled in 1996. I still tried to work even though it was against the doctors orders until I just could not endure the pain anymore. My trailer I have been told is a fire hazard because the wiring is wrong. I have no heat, and the AC comes and goes as I just don’t have the money to pay to have it fixed.
If I was given a decent place to live, certainly no mansion like they got, do you think I would squander it away? No indeed. They had septic tank troubles and yet had all of those record collections that he didn’t want to part with. This shows stupidity before they were handed this house on a silver platter.
And like you, I do not look for “Extreme Home Makeover” to come to my rescue. I will just live out my life in this dump and continue to do the best I can. I just hope that I am not ‘cremated’ in it should it catch on fire.

It was not given to us – we bought it with blood sweat and tears. It certainly doesn’t come close to what the Harpers have, but, we manage and more on a single income. So, it can be done.
Im a stay at home mum. We own our house and my hubby works full time. I do volunteer work in the community ( womens shelters, schools etc) and study part time and our five children want for nothing.

While I’m not exhonorating them for being irresponsible, what happened to them is happening to thousands of Americans nationwide. Lenders making loans that they know the borrower doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of paying back. It’s just astonishing to me how judgemental and nasty our society has become. I, personally, don’t see how anyone could blame the bank for giving them terms and a loan they really can’t afford as apparently they made the paperwork “work”. To me, people blaming the banks for this problem is only half the issue. I don’t see how someone can be mad when they take and agree to a loan that they know they can’t pull off. In this case, however, they were given a free house fully furnished, paid taxes for 25 years and a college fund for their 3 kids. That means all they had to pay for was food and clothes in order to live. A job a burger king could have satisfied that.
And why wouldn’t the bank give the loan? They certainly had the collateral. If banks operated like you seemed to think, then there’d be very little entrepreneurship because there is risk whenever you start any business.
Patricia and Milton made the decision to put everything on the line. No one else is to blame. They made the decision and they f’d it up. It’s very simple.

This is the second forum I have seem about this family. I keep seeing things that make it seem like people who don’t have a lot of money are of a lower standard. I just wonder who’s standard that could be. Is it that only people of means or at least in middle to upper middle class are worthy to not be judged or not to be considered low life. Not saying anyone here has said those words but the meaning has shown an ugly head. We as Americans are equal. Money does not set the standard of ones worth. If living in a mobile home park is the best for you then that is no differant than someone living in a $200,000 home. Or any that cant afford it but it looks good. Its not the home , its what goes on inside and inside the hearts of those inside. The point in no uncertain terms is they were given an opportunity and they failed miserably. The failure was easily predicted as well. Any person/family that isn’t willing to sacrifice to meet basic needs (Records for a sewage free home) has issues that will never be resolved by giving them ‘things’.

I pray that the family is able to cope with their lose and that the children will gain strength is what their parents are now making them go thorough. Granted, what they did is beyond belief; however, calling them names and using racial slurs only shows the ignorance of those who post comments. Frankly, I know several races who eat Chittlins, like watermelon and chicken. There are various races who “rap” and plents of PTW that also fit the category of “can’t fuck it or eat it then they ruin it.” I’ve seen more of them fuck up a home or place of business than others. I will be 69 next month and live in a 36 year old dump that has the roof about to fall in from leaks, the floor is caving in, and it has been labeled a fire hazard because of the faulty wiring. I was declared disabled in 1996 by my doctors but continued to try and work until I was at the point of having to crawl into my home after work because of the pain. My SS income is below poverty standards, and this is according to our government! I do the best I can with what I’ve got. No one helps me and all the work that has to be done, I do it. This includes crawling under the trailer. I am then in agony for days, but you do what you have to do. Am I poor? Indeed I am. Is my trailer a piece of junk? Indeed it is. But ‘trailer park trash’? NO, I am not. I keep my ‘dump’ clean and the ouside looking as good as I can. In fact, it looks better than some of these other ‘high falootin’ rich folks. Until you are standing in my shoes in my situation, don’t you DARE refer to me as ‘trailer park trash’.

First off it’s not our place to say whether someone deserves to go to hell. If God doens’t desire that any of us should perish who do we think we are to attempt to label a person of being worthy of being hell bound. Growing up I was molested and raped and because of the “true” love relationship I have with God I wouldn’t want my offenders to go to hell. I pray that they have been saved, healed, delivered and reconciled back into a loving relationship with God. Everyone of us is living in the grace and mercy of God whether or not we live for Him.
Secondly, as children of God we need to pray for more of God’s grace and mercy to be upon them and for Him to deliver yet again. We need to be careful in how we pass judgment upon others. Whoever called them greedy needs to chill less they find themselves being judged the same way. Like any of us they could have moved in their emotions instead of waiting for and on the counsel of the Holy Spirit and as a result are facing consequences of that.
Their mistake doesn’t mean that they are greedy but it is an example to us on how to be when God does deliver. Still seek Him for direction, wisdom and counsel. Without Him we are bound to mess up.

Yes the things we walk through we should learn from. The thing is each one of us learns differently. What one person might learn from one lesson might take another person 20 times to go through to learn. When people do us wrong it’s easy to hate and want them to pay and suffer for the wrong that they did, but to forgive them and love them frees us up and releases all of the hurt, pain, fear, anger, etc from our lives. Forgiveness is more for us then those that we forgive. You continue to be blessed and if there is any bit of residue in you of anger, unforgiveness or bitterness towards your offenders I pray that you will choose to completely forgive them and release them. Offenders might win a battle but never let them win the war. It’s a spiritual issue anyway and when we can separate the act from the person it helps.

I too say, charge it to the American Dream (and a lack of business savvy). Unless I didn’t fully comprehend the article, I don’t see proof that this couple was insanely greedy or that they intentionally meant to end up where they are. Neither do I think they meant to be a disgrace to the people that helped build their home.
Some people left some pretty nasty responses regarding this article. It’s amazing how quick we are to judge. I bet if given the opportunity, most of the people that replied, would have done the same thing. OK, maybe you wouldn’t have mortgaged as much or maybe you would have done more research and studied the market or consulted with a few experts in the business, but that doesn’t mean the situation would have had a different outcome.
I say let’s not judge and insult, but instead, send up prayers for them. They are already suffering from the consequences of their choices. They don’t need us to chastise them.
Sometimes God uses situations like these to teach repsonsibility and humility to his people. I hope their story reaches others.

Most of the blacks I know do not allow that word to be offensive. Most of the blacks I know understand that the people who use the term are ignorant, and it says way more about the speaker than the intended target.
One of my friends told me something like this: “I would rather have someone say ‘nigger’ to me, so I know up front where they are coming from. The ones who act tolerant out of guilt are the ones who scare me.”
Just to give you a frame of reference, so you dont think I am playing the “some-of-my-best-friends-are-black” game, my closest black friends are a woman lawyer, a male IT Specialist and a female student. The lawyer was raised by a cop and a teacher in a nice middle-class home. The female student is from Africa. So neither of them really had to “scrabble” up the food chain. But the IT guy (George) IS from the bad side of town from a single mother.
He got help from Big Brothers. A man stepped into his life and showed him that there were places he could go, and things he could do. He now has a beautiful wife and two boys and a nice house in a good neighborhood. (He was my next door neighbor for a few years). They are the cub scout leaders, and sunday school teachers. THEIR kids know what is expected of them, and it is a lot.
So – George’s family now is where my lawyer friend’s family was a generation ago.
Anyway – it seems to me that the only people who get really excited by the word, is the MEDIA – and the people who ‘fit’ the negative connotations of the word.
The word only has IMPLIED power, and only if people are willing to give it that implied power. Otherwise, it’s just a word.

As someone mentions above in one of the replies “they’re already in hell”.. That does not mean that I feel sorry for them. It is all about personal responsibility and what they did was “gamble” and lost. They took the risk knowing full well the consequences should the venture not succeed. The rest of society should not be obligated to pick up the pieces.

I just finished paying off the mortage on my house. It was not easy and my husband and i worked our asses off to do it. These people had their mansion handed to them on a plate. They were set for life. Bloody wasteful, ungrateful bastards deserve to live on the streets and eat out of garbage cans.

Okay, just for the record, I live near these people (I went to school with their oldest son), and this is the SECOND time in LESS THAN 6 MONTHS that they have face foreclosure on this house. Anyway, the point is, while it’s great that they tried to start their own business and be self-sufficient and all, why did they chose a business they knew nothing about? And then, they asked everyone in the community to bail them out when they faced losing that dream house.

Agree! That is where I started becoming interested, although that was 8th grade. I did a massive report on the medical advances that were made in the Civil war. A LOT of stuff was discovered then. For example better ways to deal with amputations, and the reason why you don’t stick lint in belly wounds! Also why you don’t use the same bloody pussy bowl to sponge off the entire ward of injured men… The terrible stories those bones tell… Anyway, I haven’t quite convinced myself to buy that series yet, although I’ve been meaning to… I can’t quite imagine my husband’s joy at being forced to watch them all over again with me! I do however have several books I haven’t touched upon in quite some time. I’ll read up, it’ll give me something to do other than moping around the house in between chauffeuring my daughter to all of her activities for the next ten days.

I do not agree with mortgaging the house to start a new business. Their children’s college education was paid for, their house was paid for and they simply couldn’t save what their mortgage used to be to start a new business. Only stupid people would refinance a home that was paid for.
