Little girls like Lin Miaoke are evil.
Oh, adults may not think so. To adults, girls like Lin Miaoke are perfect. Pretty, bright, cheerful, beautiful voice…what’s not to like about Lin Miaoke?
Lin Miaoke, the little girl in the red dress who sang the patriotic Chinese song called “Hymn to the Motherland” during the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, was very proud to have been chosen as the “face of China.” When 15% of the population of the world sees you, the “face of China,” sing - and sing well - a little pride can be a good thing.
The problem is that, while Lin Miaoke might have been the face that night, another little girl, Yang Peiyi, was the voice.
This is Yang Peiyi, the Laura Ingalls Wilder to Lin Miaoke’s Nellie Oleson.
According to an interview that ceremony’s musical designer, Chen Qigang, made with a Beijing radio station, Yang Peiyi had gone through and won a grueling singing competition - the prize of which was to perform the song, live, in front of the world.
Yang Peiyi won the competition and was practicing feverishly to perfect the song, but at the last moment a member of the Chinese politburo who was watching her rehearse decided that while Yang Peiyi might have the perfect voice for the role, she was far too unattractive to actually represent China.
So that night, during the opening ceremonies, while a perfectly sung pre-recording of Yang Peiyi’s singing was played, Lin Miaoke stood prettily before the world and lip-synched every word.
During the radio interview, which has since been destroyed utterly from the Internet by the Chinese government, Chen Qigang said this:
This was a last-minute question, a choice we had to make. Our rehearsals had already been vetted several times - they were all very strict. When we had the dress rehearsals, there were spectators from various divisions, including above all a member of the politburo who gave us his verdict: we had to make the swap.
Yang Peiyi wasn’t the first singer who was deselected due to not having the required attractiveness level. Chen Qigang told the interviewer that one of the 10 the initial hopefuls to sing the anthem was a ten-year-old who had originally been chosen for the quality of her voice - but that she was also eliminated because she was not “cute” and not “young” enough.
It’s almost like the Mao Zedong was in charge again, except as far as we know, these Chinese leaders aren’t pedophiles.
Chen Qigang felt that there was really nothing wrong with the deception:
The reason was for the national interest. The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression. We have a responsibility to face the audience of the whole country, and to be open with this explanation. We should all understand it like this: it is a question of the national interest. It is a question of the image of our national music, our national culture. Especially at the entrance of our national flag, this is an extremely important, an extremely serious matter. So we made the choice. I think it is fair to both Lin Miaoke and Yang Peiyi - after all, we have a perfect voice, a perfect image and a perfect show, in our team’s view, all together.
Despite not actually singing during the ceremony, Lin Miaoke - who has been in several television ads prior to the Olympic ceremony - has been enjoying herself, giving interviews to the myriad of news organizations who were anxious to talk with the “face of China.”

If appearance is so damned important, then take a cue from the rest of the world. We have perfected “image-making” to the point that homely people like Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie can appear to be attractive.
Yang isn’t deformed (like our friend Stanley), and is not butt-ugly. She may not be QUITE as perfect as Lin, but put some fake pigtails and a little lipgloss and eyeliner and she would be cute. (Note the fucking sarcasm here? The girl with the actual talent is adorable!)

I “sang” the finale solo of the Super Bowl XX half-time show in New Orleans. So, I found it interesting to watch the “breaking news” of the little girl whose voice but not face was used for the opening ceremonies. This has been done for years. Like I said, I “sang” the finale solo of the Super Bowl XX half-time show in New Orleans. Yes, shocker, here in the United States. Well, it was me the world saw but someone I never even met recorded “my” voice months earlier and I was simply the “look” the producers wanted. I feel sorry for the little girl whose voice was used, but it is not like this is the first time this has been done. Trust me, the girl who lip synced will have a lot more explaining to do… I know! But in the end, what an honor to be either the voice OR the face. Pretty cool regardless, don’t you think?

The Chinese don’t hate girls in general. It’s just that their oppressive government has decided that each family can only have one child.
Boys stay in the family when they become adults and marry (taking care of their parents in their old age), while women become part of their husband’s family after marriage. (Thus being a drain on the family income for no future reward).
So, unfortunately, many peasant chinese families will do anything they can to get a boy child, and even go so far as killing, abandoning or selling the girls so they can try again in the sperm lottery. Its kind of like here - it’s the ignorant ones who hurt their kids.
Educated and progressive Chinese families do not hate their daughters. The daughters are being given every opportunity that a well-off Chinese boy is given and many are spoiled little princesses. I am guessing that Little Miss Lin is one of the princesses.

I guess it just goes to show people really need to consider that what they are seeing may not be what they think they are seeing… when it comes to children though, it is just down right low to impose that type of value system…

This has nothing to do with the children’s nationality and everything to do with the Chinese government. They are so desperate to be in control of everything that happens, I can assume that most in China have no idea Lin Miaoke didn’t actually sing the song opening night. The Chinese government controls what their lucky citizens get to see, hear and experience. The United States government may be flawed in a big way, but at least we can speak our minds in a forum like this. I’m sure people of China can’t even access this website. The Chinese government doesn’t want the Chinese to have independent thought process-they want them to be mindless drones.

Why the hack you scum try to insult the innocent children? All children are beautiful. Don’t forget you didn’t have a choice when your mom and dad made you. My take is that it would be equally elegant had Miaoke song with her own voice, or were Peiyi on stage singing and performing. The “perfect” match is some idiot Chinese official’s decision. Wow… I can’t believe some of the posts here. I randomly got to this site while looking up details on the story.
Fact: Lin Miaoke is a little girl!
Fact: Politicians made the decision to do the lip sync!
Is lip-syncing and pushing this preconception of “cute” or “pretty” right? Not by a long shot. But is this young girl guilty of politics, hatred, or meanness towards the singer? Some of you may believe “yes” because she took center stage due to her looks. However, I think you’re just dismissing her as a human being by writing her off as ” inherently evil” due to her looks. She’s a child for pete sake. Do you know her personality? Do you know what she’s like? For all you know, she may grow up into a woman who does scientific research and never leans upon her looks for getting ahead. And we all know not every cute child star ends up looking good in life.
Psst. Lots of “hot” celebrities are products of plastic surgery and were not the cute kids in their youth.
She’s the face of China at the Olympics because the politicians selected her and because it’s an honor to represent the country. 1992 Barcelona had one of the most awesome torch lighting ceremonies where a paralympic archer shot a flaming arrow at the torch. It secretly flew over and behind the torch while someone somewhere turned on the flame. The switch thrower should have credit, but the arrow shot what people remember. To ostracize this young girl for representing her country…. I hope she never reads comments like these baseless character assassinations when she grows up.

There you go making another assumption about someone you don’t know. Just an FYI, I read the whole series as a child and was happy when Laura put an end to third wheel rides.
It’s not “wrong and stupid,” but you merely fail to see the connection. You assume this “cute” posterchild will use her looks for the easy road in life when my point was that many celebrities come about their status through artificial means to achieve society’s ill-conceived notions of beauty. Therefore, you’re logical steps show a flaw as “cute” or “hot” are not necessarily dictated by previous perceptions in youth and those who take the easy life by looks are also subject to this.
You can spew facts with exclamations all day, and so long as they’re facts, that’s great. I see you’re not disagreeing but using sarcasm as an attempt of rebuttal. Well, have a nice day as you, I assume a grown rational adult, continue belittling a nine year old child, assuming she’ll grow up a conceited person because you’re prejudiced against her due to her looks and the communist government’s usage of her as a poster child. I like how you have a post on this girl and yet do not post about the organizers or the politicians, but merely include them as options in your poll.

Do you really think Miaoke’s parents had a choice about allowing her to “perform” at the opening ceremonies? In a communist government, I imagine her parents had no choice but to comply with the request. To tell the government officials, “Sorry, but I think what you’re asking me to do is dishonest and immoral” would have been perceived as disloyality to the government, who knows what the repercussions may have been.
I don’t think Miaoke had a choice, either…chinese girls are raised to be obedient to their parents…
Whoever leaked this information to the press did a disservice to both of these children. What happened was wrong, but now the whole world knows…how humiliating to poor Peiyi…
So no, Miaoke CERTAINLY does not deserve to go to hell, she’s been a victim in this situation as much as Peiyi.

For me it was back in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s - my friend and I were pissed at some asshole, so we decided to find the most disgusting stuff we could find as stuffing for a package. Buff featured women over 300 pounds. Some men may like it - fine, but I usually look at naked women who are under 200 pounds - between 110 and 175 - anything less usually does not have any curves….
So we’re all guilty of some type of discrimination - discrimination on some level is natural. Some of it needs to be dealt with by society’s rules, some of it is just beyond rules while some is healthy.
80 year old women in their death beds just do nothing for me sexually - that’s nature at work!

Fred, if she’s cute I’ll take her in biggie sizes. It usually means she can cook a warm meal. And when it’s time to chow down, she won’t just eat a salad and look at me while I’m porking out.

I honestly believe that the Chinese representative NEVER called Yang Peiyi ugly - only that she lacked stage presence and desired look for the show. This is a pretty legitamite claim in show biz and justifies forgoing a candidate for the stage. WE in the West presumed that to mean that she is ugly and started being consumed by the media tirade that led us to presume that she was too “ugly” for the job.
Doesn’t that say a lot about us? If anything needs to be in Hell, it’s the Media for projecting their misleading stories on us and us for buying it without thinking critically. But hey, what do I expect from individuals who didn’t bother to think critically about the tanks in Tiananmen (see below)! (If you don’t realize, watch the actual video of the guy with the bag, the tanks actually ATTEMPTED TO SWERVE around him.) I guess anything to justify your own self righteousness.
If anyone will cause little girls like Yang Peiyi to develop self perception issues it will be because of US and the Media calling her too ugly - NOT the fault of China, the Poliburo, nor the Olympic Committee.
I bet the author of this post suffers from a severe self image problem and his or her outrage over this story serves to showcase the manefestation of this issue - and any “witty retorts” or deletion of this message by the admin will only serve to prove this right.

Im looking at photos of both little girls. Although one has better teeth and the other looks like she cut her own fringe, i think both are beautiful.
Kids have beauty.
I dont think anyone deserves hell, but the people that said she was TOO UGLY deserve a good kick up the arse by someone wearing steel caps.

to the admins -
does this girls face really belong on a list mainly populated with murderers and rapists?
The choice of the Chinese government was distasteful, but she likely had no decision in the matter, and it pales in comparison with most of the content (which i typically enjoy reading) on this website. - you’re talking about a little girl going to hell for singing, come on! If you want to project anger, blame the politburo guy and put his name and picture as the headline.

Mazzi reply on August 20th, 2008:
I think the point was not whether either of the children belong in hell - but whether the decision-makers who chose to harm the esteem of a perfectly adorable girl belong there.
Hurting children is wrong, be it through cruelty, negligence, abuse or torture. This was cruelty - the lowest on the spectrum, but it was still harmful to the child.
[Reply]
it was shameful doing this to children at a very young age, but reading the PROs and CONTRAs, why everytime somebody gave his/her own thought which opposed to the admin’s writing, you accused them as COMMIE or taking sides? It’s simply about discrimination and everbody should admit that this happen all over the world, not just in US, China or any other countries. Anybody ever see a Miss Universe with bad teeth or bad eyebrow? Or a fat and ugly prom queen/king ?
C’mon, put aside all that racism. I don’t think the ‘freedom to talk’ mean you can hurt anyone else whose different from you. Nobody can choose where and which race to be born :)

Mazzi reply on August 20th, 2008:
Where the HELL did you get “racism” from this? With the exception of a few trolls, race is hardly an issue here, nationality and cruelty is.
Maybe you should put aside all of your hyper-sensitivity about racism? It’s people who are so quick to cry “racism” when there is none, who perpetuate the negativity of it. That would appear to be… um YOU.
And, who exactly are you writing to? You make a mention of the admin, as if he is smashing anyone with a different view. I went back and checks all of his notes, and not a ONE does that. If you mean the rest of us, then that, my dear, would mean that it is OUR opinion, not admins.
Aren’t you the one that I suggested should take her head out of her ass, yesterday? If not - that suggestion would be just as applicable to you.
Have a nice day. RACIST!

Marianne is obviously Chinese.
So, fat and ugly people usually don’t get voted Prom King/Queen and NO, I’ve NEVER seen a Miss Universe with a fucked up eyebrow or jacked up teeth.
Bottom line is, you’re an idiot. It doesn’t have anything to do with racism. It’s because Yang Peiyi has a beautiful voice but uglier than a shaved horses ass. I’d much rather look at Lin Miaoke, even though she’s not really singing the song.
It’s all really text book.
On another note…. why is it that white people never make it about race when something doesn’t go their way?

I went on a date with a tender that had faint eyebrows and over-lapping teeth but she was such a sweet and a nice lady.
Usually they are the sweetest because they know if they combine their looks with the devil’s attitude, people would shoot them on sight.
Oh, and she offered to pay the whole tab. How many women would do that?

Mazzi? You seem to be the one that I might have called a racist in a recent ‘contact us comment’ (if you are not the one then you will have no idea what I am talking about) Do you answer to hate mail? Skin head is how I believe I put it. Anyway, the fact of the manner is. You seem to be offended by being called a racist… This might be good news! Could this mean you are really not a racist. I do not believe I have gotten an answer on that one yet. Tap,tap.“`nails tapping impatiently“`

Effing bitches. Yang is adorable, and she has an incredible voice.

it’s cruel to put a child through all those auditions and rehersals just to deny her dreams at the last minute-but still. you can’t blame the other little girl who only knew she was performing 15 minutes beforehand! (or so some articles say). kids are young and impressionable and she didn’t even know the words she was singing weren’t the ones being heard. you’re being ridicuously harsh on someone who most likely didn’t even have much of a choice.
on another note, as a second generation chinese american who has actually been to the country and talked with normal, non-political people trying live happily like everyone else, can someone please write a nice, happy article that’s not about the chinese government’s coverups (the footprints were digital because it was unsafe to film them by helicopter, by the way, reutuers has an article sayign that) or how communists are going to destroy the world. chinese people are nice people, the majority of their 1.3 billion. i’d wager that people spread all this negativity because they’re afraid of their jobs being outsourced to china or chinese nationalism (which we would call patriotism if it was in the U.S.). fine. just don’t take it out on the whole damn country. if you don’t care about slandering an entire nation of perfectly fine people, it’s also bad karma.

Too much PC BS in the west… Yang herself doesn’t mind, her parents don’t mind, who are you to say it had hurt her? she may grow up to be more beautiful than Lin, who knows. It’s not the best thing to do, but I don’t see it doing much harm either… if you self-righteous PC saints would just shut up already. Lin is the cuter of the two, period.

Poor kids, that’s a legacy they won’t forget. Peiyi earned a prize and they give it to the pretty kid without the same talent (she probably has her own talents, but we’ll never know). Both of these girls will probably get a lot of crap for this. Why didn’t they just factor attractiveness into the contest if it was so important to them? Pei’s not an ugly kid, either, not that it should really matter, but she looks kind of sad (wonder why) and not pure of internal feelings if you know what I mean (I don’t). Pretty sick, but China has much bigger problems than this to deal with, like, oh…human rights, killer smog, infanticide…

i thnk that while both girls are cute, yang is actually the cuter one. and for all of you who are talking about her teet, she’s at the age where she’s losing baby teeth and growing big ones. of course they’re not perfect. besides that, you all act like no one in your families ever needed braces! the way you all sy cruel things about children here, while boo-hooing over them elsewhere is ridiculous and kinda two-faced, don’t you think?
