Curtis Lange
This is 44-year-old Curtis Lange.
In the 2010 census, where you are asked to put down your occupation, Curtis Ralph Lange could put a little checkmark in the “serial rapist” box.
In 1982, while wearing a stocking cap pulled down over his face, Curtis Lange raped a fellow student at Douglas High School before stabbing the 17-year-old girl in the head and taking $50 from her. The teenager called the police and told them that she recognized her rapist’s voice. After being caught and tried, Curtis Lange was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
While in prison, Mr. Lange was given the usual battery of tests and evaluations from psychologists and doctors. In 1990, one prison psychologist decided that Curtis Lange was not a particularly high risk to commit more sexually motivated crimes. When Curtis was paroled in 2002, he was released into the community as a level 2, or tier 2, registered sexual offender.
On the 3rd of May, 2008, at about 9:40 in the morning, Curtis Lange broke into the house of a 54-year-old woman. Wearing a mask and carrying a “rape kit” that contained handcuffs and plastic zip ties to secure his victim’s hands, Curtis Lange waved a gun around while threatening that a friend of his was outside – telling the woman that if she gave him any trouble, she’d be gang raped.
Once her compliance was assured, Curtis Lange bound the woman, holding her captive for four hours while he helped himself to her vagina – several times.
After satisfying his sexual needs, Curtis made the woman drive him to a nearby ATM, where he forced her to withdraw some money. If the woman’s daughter hadn’t come home and scared him off, Curtis Lange might have stayed around for a while longer.
The incident with that woman shared a few common factors with another incident that happened in November of 2006. In that incident, another 56-year-old woman had her home broken into, and the rapist used the woman’s digital camera to photograph her – after which she was raped for several hours. The rapist then stole the woman’s camera, wallet, cordless phones and her cellular phone before leaving.
That victim told the police that her attacker’s voice had sounded like this guy she knew from a country music bar – but that she didn’t really think it was him because he looked like he was a different height.
Detectives discovered that in both cases, the guy who had done this had gone to the trouble of shaving his legs, chest and pubic region. He had dressed the women in both outfits that they owned and in clothing that he brought with him – forcing the women to pose for pictures. The rapist thoroughly cleaned the women after the assaults and took away or cleaned anything he touched that he thought could be evidence.
Efficient.
But it left a pattern.
The woman from the November 2006 attack was interviewed by police after the second attack on the second woman. She identified Curtis Lange from a photo that the police brought, and added a little information that she had missed from before – she told detectives that Curtis Lange had gone to her workplace the day before she was attacked and talked to her a bit about what she was going to be doing that day.
In June, scientists from the Washoe County Crime Laboratory were able to confirm that the male DNA recovered from the 54-year-old victim of the May attack matched the DNA taken from Curtis Lange.
During their investigation, Curtis Lange’s wife, Amy Lange, told detectives that Curtis had shaved his chest, pubic region and legs on the 2nd of May and also had done so about a year and a half before that. According to Amy Lange, those were the only times her husband had shaved those areas and stated that Curtis blamed the latest shaving on heat rash.
In an interview with Curtis Lange himself, Mr. Rapey-rape told police that when the woman was attacked in May, he was busy helping a friend move. The detectives went through cell phone records, however, and learned that Curtis Lange’s cell phone was using cell towers near the second victim’s home.
Curtis Ralph Lange was arrested at his home and charged with sexual assault, armed sexual assault, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery. While being interviewed by detectives, Curtis Lange tried to kill himself by stuffing tissues down his throat.
It didn’t work.
On the night of Curtis Lange’s arrest Leutenant Robert McDonald of the Reno Police Department told the press:
I think everyone should feel much safer at night now that he is behind bars and not walking free in the community. The arrest comes as the result of an exhaustive criminal investigation of Curtis Lange for the listed crimes. We recognize that there may be other victims of this defendant in the area that may not have reported their assault. Accordingly, the Reno Police Department encourages any other victims of this individual to contact the Reno Police Department.
Lt. McDonald also stated that the victims have been notified of the arrest.

I knew Curtis. I was 7 and he was 16. Even though my family was Catholic and theirs was Mormon, we still hung out together. I was actually closer to his brother, Danny’s age. Every so often, my parents and his parents would go out and Curtis would babysit me. Nothing drastic happened, but he did molest me. Of course, I realize now how God was watching over me to not allow anything further to happen. It could have been so much worse. I’ve since moved away from the Douglas County area, but I still think of those events from time to time and the horrible rape he did in 1982. I happened to stumble across this article and never new he had raped two more women after the 1982 incident. I honestly didn’t know he was out of prison. This all really sums up how important it is to have a good father in a child’s life. From what I remember, his mom was really sweet, but his father wasn’t loving at all. Dr. James Dobson talks about men in prison and how over 98% hate their fathers. It also reminds me how important it is to protect children from what they see on TV and in magazines as they grow up because I recall them watching movies where I had to “close my eyes” during certain scenes. I’m not particularly against Mormons, but in this case, I imagine the role of that religion played a big part. As parents, we are to bring up our children the way they should go and teach them right things . . . otherwise, they cannot be productive contributors to society. I do feel sorry for Curtis. His upbringing has a lot to do with how he developed into this monster. But I do realize he ultimately had choices to make too. From one of the other commenters above, I looked at his brother, Danny’s myspace page and I just cried when I saw that page. Danny didn’t use to be like that. I am so saddened by how the lives of these boys turned out – it is just crushing to me. I pray for them – probably now more than ever. It’s never too late for them to turn around. Paul killed thousands of Christians and left a blood-trailed past in his adulthood to follow Jesus. He was accepted. I do believe that same turn-around can happen for Curtis and Danny. I only pray it does. I should have a lot of hate for what Curtis did to me, but I realize now that being a follower of Jesus means that we can hope and pray for those who are lost and on the wrong road in life. So now I make my life as best as I can for my children and realize that their father is an important aspect in their upbringing. I’m so thankful I have a wonderful, loving husband who is an awesome father to my children. And I’m also thankful I don’t harbor ill feelings towards the Lange family. I will always pray for them.

According to US Department of Justice Statistics, only 5% of sex offenders released in 1994 went on to commit a new sex crime. Some other studies put this estimate at 13-15%. However, these studies are not conducted in Texas.
Most people don’t know that Texas only has a 27% recidivism rate because our law enforcement and criminal justice professionals work hard to IMPROVE society. I know this because I am an ex-convict whose conviction was 1994. I am also a registered sex offender (TDCJ-ID #684867).
Lange should not have been paroled. I served my sentence day for day, which I believe we all should. During my ten years in the TDCJ-ID, I watched the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles release many people, though they had extensive disciplinary histories. In fact, by 1996 or so, I was so sick of the parole system, I started refusing to cooperate with parole–focusing instead on my education and personal development. THAT is what our prisons should emphasize. If someone (including myself) screws up, there is a district attorney more than willing to prosecute, but the goal should not be human warehousing. This costs far too much for taxpayers (of which I am now one).
Curtis Lange, in my experience, was most likely the type of convict who spent more time at the weight set, on the rec yard and with his ‘peckerwood’ friends than learning to stay out of prison. I have no sympathy there. But for someone to say ‘once a rapist, always a rapist’ or ‘once a thief, always a thief,’ I cannot agree. The facts beyond the if-it-bleeds-it-leads media say something entirely different.
Compare Texas to California. We have 27% recidivism, while California has 67% recidivism! This is because our law enforcement and criminal justice professionals are doing a better job. Please stop and consider this. I live in a county with one of the harshest District Attorneys in the state (John Bradley)…and I voted for him in the last election. Does that say something when an ex-convict supports law enforcement with fact rather than regurgitating the usual cliches?

You say TX is more successful than CA because TX has a 40% less rate- all that means to me is that California in fact is toupher and more aggressive on criminals- they put people- particularly ex-cons in the slammer.
If a convict with two strikes steals a candy bar the shoplifting charge becomes a felony and that person goes for 25 years and so what if they were starving on the street and hungry- they have a track record of resorting to victimizing others to ‘earn their way’ through life.
WA has a system where they can keep sexual offenders behind bars indefinitely- Joseph Duncan, the recommendation was that he stay behind bars. Of course the parole board ignored and set him free- he murdered and molested an entire family and you can read abou him here. And we all know the recent details about someone cut loose from prison for humane and sympathetic reasons who killed 4 cops in a coffee shop.
But the worst problem I have with you post- you stated you served your sentence. I am not going to your profile site and see what you were convicted of for being a registered sex offender. But for rape or murder no amount of time can justify what you did. And I have heard this crap from exfelons before that basically in one form or another goes, “Do your time and you paid and that should be it”- yeah, you should be trusted just like anyone else, given the same job opportunites and benefit of th doubt like you are elevated to the level of Mother Theresa.
