He was 17 & 18yo; I was 13. Lived about 4 houses away from where he broke in, raped & left for dead the sweet girl he attended church with. Saddened, u surely mean that being mormon had something to do w his actions only b/c this girl tried to be a supportive sister in Christ to him? I have since become mormon, & one of the reasons I was convinced of the church's authenticity is the extreme publicly accepted prejudice directed toward mormons. There's actually a church in Gville who's sunday flyer states their church's mission is to "destroy the mormon church". Really? Not fight domestic violence, feed the hungry, heal the sick, or anything else Christ committed his talents to. Who else wud satan attack if not the church he is most frightened of. No other public prejudice is so openly accepted- not jewish, not muslim, no one. And never have I heard a basis for that prejudice that was true- only flimsy, half baked comments. Funny that someone wants to exhort us to step back & let the holy spirit correct him. Mormons are one of the few who believe in righteous indignation, ex-communicating criminals to protect other church members- until the convicted proves his remorse & commitment to turning their life around. I have been trained in psychiatry & can assure you that I think of Curtis as an example of a convict who has typical behavior of a life long criminal. He was always "detached" from people. He used u like an object to fulfill himself just like he has done thruout his life. Somewhere along the line he got sex & self esteem & violence/control all twisted up together. I am sure Ralph's inability to show his son an example of what a compassionate, respectful man is did not help. Nor did it help that his "mother role" apparently lacked affection & did not exude the motherly roll model he needed. Mayb he treats women like objects b/c he thinks all women are not good, are not truley kind hearted righteous women. Mayb the attempted murder in 1982 was his way of proving he could subvert one righteous young lady. Everyone on the bus knew he was a pervert. I didnt see that b/c I was so young. While he flirted w me, his comments did scare me on a fut instinct level, I was also flattered at times as well. Being a child u do t understand how weird it is that an older boy would pay any attention to u, or how weird it was that he was the only 18yo boy on the bus. Everyother teenage boy either had friends or a job at Sharkey's to buy their own. I do believe in miracles, but as a society, & as a mom, it is prudent that it is prudent to ensure the protection of our children, that they get a chance to grow up trusting in love, & protecting their right to have normal sex lives that cement their marriages. That is really hard to do when they have been molested. (i was at 5yo, so I do understand how much strength u must have & how amazingly healthy u r to have released ur hate for him as it so obviously cud have been worse; and really ? Why allow him to engender hate carried thru your adult life & allow him control to hurt u now? Hate does that.) We owe our children the protection we can afford to have as normal life aa we can give them. That takes precedence over ensuring proven rapists "get a fair shake".
