There is no type of rehabilitation and it's a cruel joke to think there is any system set up in our prisons that would allow this. How can you take a "Boy" with psychological problems and put him in prison for 18 years to be violated and beaten with no treatment availbable to him and turn him lose 18 years later with no training, no skills, etc. He didn't even have the ability to use the ATM because he was never shown or taught. Sometimes, there are no explanations. If you put a child in prison then expect a monster to be created. He asked for the death penalty himself because he knows the weight and pain he has caused and it's the only way to give some kind of justice to the Souers' family. As far as the tattoo's, those were to cover several suicide attempts he has previously tried to commit. Sometimes the guards are the ones out to get you, not other prisoners. There are no quick fix people. God can change anything in anyone at anytime. We shouldn't put all our faith in other men. You are dead on jono1. Did the system try to rehabilitate him? No, because our system no longer attempts to rehabilitate, and hasn't for decades. Mostly this is because the system has been hijacked by people who think that criminals should only be punished and rehabilitation isn't even worth trying. I give you 100% certainty that if this man had been treated and shown if not compassion than at least some sensitivity when he was a teenaged offender, that young woman would still be alive. Instead, our system locked up a teenager in an adult prison for an adult-length sentence and didn't even pay lip service to getting him psychological help, an education, or job training (even lip service went out the window sometime in the late 90s.) He gets out of jail, probably after spending years getting raped and indoctrinated to hate authority even more than he already did, and - surprise! he offends again! So pointing at this man (and don't get me wrong, I agree he deserves to fry) and screeching about how "scum like this can't be rehabilitated," when society put forth precisely 0 effort at rehabilitation in the first place, is just stupid.
