People are odd, especially when it comes to relationships. When a relationship ends, the best thing to do is to go cold-turkey and make a clean cut of things. Throw away things that remind you of your ex, don’t go to places where you’re likely to see that person, and try to develop new habits.
Shawn Damon Barth, who has been through several relationships, should have learned something by now about how to make that clean break.
Instead of that clean break, however, Shawn Barth kept a souvenir of his relationship with one of his ex-girlfriends around for a while.
Shawn Barth kept that woman’s 13-year-old daughter.
In a trailer.
For three months.
While he had sex with her on a daily basis.
In a trailer parked right next to an orchard about a mile from a road, Shawn Barth kept this 13-year-old girl in a trailer that he owned. According to authorities, Mr. Barth maintained a complete mentally domination over this girl, who was allowed out of the trailer only to go to school. A video camera on top of the door to the trailer maintained a constant surveillance of the area and helped keep the girl scared and under control.
The school district that the girl attended before she was transferred to her new school had some evidence that the girl was being sexually abused and alerted the authorities. The police, once they had the evidence and the identity of the suspected abuser – Shawn Damon Barth – set up a surveillance schedule for Mr. Barth.
On the 15th of September, 2008, Shawn Barth was arrested in his pickup truck by Ventura County sheriff’s deputies who had been given the go-ahead.
Shawn Damon Barth has been charged with child rape, oral copulation on a child and continuous sexual abuse.
He faces a possible life sentence.

I heard about this guy a couple of days ago, and I had the same questions then: What”s up with Mom? Apparently a similar molestation allegation was made against Barth in September 2007 in Ventura County, CA. The District Attorney’s office reviewed the case in April 2008 and determined there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. Not sure if it was the same girl involved, but the cops are supposed to be checking that angle out too. Shawny liked to bounce around SoCal in his “Motorhome Of Love”, which probably made him hard to nail down, and he also claimed to be the girl’s guardian, according to school officials. They’re the real heroes in this case:

i don’t understand why the hell the cops had to do 3 months of surveillance work before the girl was rescued. i know they have to be thorough and make sure charges stick, but that poor girl had to suffer what seems like a needlessly long time.

I have to agree. If someone had my daughter i would NOT be waiting for the police to get their shit together. There would be no need for them to make sure they had a solid case that would stick, because the dirty fucker would be dead.

why the hell didn’t the police, along with a child youth authority worker, just go to this girl’s school and interview her? After assuring the girl she was going to be safe and not have to return to that idiot’s camper, they could have taken her to an ER for a medical exam, which would have shown she’d been raped. DNA test would have resulted in immediate conviction. There is NO EXCUSE for surveillance taking 3 months. What the HELL were they surveying–if the outside of the camper, what evidence would they get? If the inside, evidence would have been immediate.

Her new boyfriend needs his head read. Who the hell would want to hook up with and risk reproducing with someone who “lost” their child and failed to report it to police. The school had to step in and make a report for anything to be done. The mum should be up there with Shawn.

Exactly! When someone loses a loved one to murder or when someone is raped or molested….it stays with them for life. They learn ( hopefully ) to deal with it and get on with life, but it NEVER goes away. The memory is always there, as is the loss. If victims have to live with that life sentence, then it is only fair that the perps do also.

Her life is not necesarily ruined. Changed forever, yes. There is hope that she is a survivor and will, with a lot of councelling and support, go on to live a full life. I hope for her that is the case.

I swear, I wish that we could get some REAL laws on the books for bad parenting. Hold the parent’s feet to the flames not only for their children’s misbehavior, but also for their well-being.
And I do not mean getting CPS involved. I mean, put them in an institution and teach them to be good parents, or throw them in jail if they won’t cooperate.
Unlike deviant sexual behavior, I think that most of these crappy parents could actually be rehabilitated if they were put into a bootcamp type of environment, and taught how to do the right things.
Statistically the mom was probably a ho at 13 herself, probably did not have a good upbringing, likely had no father on site, probably was exposed to alcoholism and/or drugs, and neglect or abuse. How is the MOM going to learn how to be a good mother? And now, how will her daughter?
Some of us have a strong instinct, and can break through the cycle, but others just fall deeper into it.
Don’t get me wrong, I have ZERO sympathy for the mother – you guys know that I only sympathize with child victims while they are children, and I lose it once they become adults, but the fact is – that something has to be done to stop the cycle.

I’m going to have to do some more digging on this story Melissa. Apparently, the victim’s biological parents sent some sort of letter relinquishing their parental rights, but to who I’m not sure. This whole case is a dirty business, and I’m really afraid of what I’m going to find out about the “adults” involved.

I’m pretty sure screaming “RAPE” at the local police station or HOSPITAL might have been sufficient for CPS-sitting-on-their-asses-doing-nothing to take notice, especially if she showed signs of rape. I guess the mental/emotional damage affects us in many different ways though….
