Gabriel Bitterman and Robert Peterson
This is 23-year-old Gabriel Bitterman.
Well, that was 23-year-old Gabriel Bitterman. Gabriel had a little incident on the 19th of September, 2008 that resulted in his being alive in exactly the way that dead people aren’t.
Gabriel Bitterman made a habit of having little incidents. He and his baby’s momma were living together in Robert Peterson’s apartment, along with the 5-month-old product of their joyful union. Robert Peterson was the baby’s momma’s daddy.
On the 5th of August, 2008, Gabriel Bitterman punched his baby’s momma in the face shortly after midnight. Police were called at a quarter until 1 in the morning, were told that people were fighting, and arrived at the scene quickly. While the cops were trying to sort out what had happened, Gabriel Bitterman and his baby’s momma were standing with Robert Peterson. When the mother of his child told police that he had punched her in the face, Gabriel Bitterman tried to hit her again, but Robert Peterson held him back.
That’s what a good father-in-law would do, after all.
Someone standing nearby, who had been tired of listening to Gabriel Bitterman and his baby’s momma’s drama, told the cops that the pair had been arguing all day long.
The cops took Gabriel Bitterman to jail. A “no contact” order was put on Gabriel, and was intended to keep the volatile pair apart. It didn’t work at all. When Gabriel Bitterman got out of jail, he went right back to living with his baby’s momma and her dad. His baby’s momma, who had been fined $200 for assaulting Gabriel on the 5th of August, attempted to get the “no contact” order dropped, but the judge kept the order in place, despite the 19-year-old’s desperate entreaty:
We want to try to work out our relationship. I feel it’s important for both of us to raise our baby together.
On the 4th of September, 2008, Gabriel Bitterman was cited for child abuse after he passed out drunk and left the 5-month-old girl alone and unattended.
A protection order was also recently filed against Gabriel by a woman who said that he was stalking her 13-year-old daughter.
So, like we pointed out earlier, Gabriel Bitterman made a habit of having little incidents – until the 19th of September, 2008. That was the day that he picked up a knife, and started to threaten his baby’s momma again. The woman apparently thought that the situation was serious enough to warrant some loud screaming, which she did. The screaming alerted neighbors in the apartment complex to call police, who were conveniently close – along with a television crew from MTV’s television show Busted.
Three minutes after 911 was called, Officer Jonathan Kossow, a 9-year veteran, arrived at the apartment – shortly after 3 in the morning. After hearing screams, Officer Kossow went into the residence. Once inside, he saw that Gabriel Bitterman had dragged his baby’s momma into a back bedroom of the apartment and that Gabriel was holding a large kitchen knife at her throat.
Gabriel had told his baby’s momma that he was going to hurt himself and had already cut his arm with the knife, so that combined with the fact that he was holding a knife on this woman could have freed Officer Kossow to draw his pistol and, after a few attempts at communication, blow Gabriel Bitterman away – especially when Gabriel turned towards the officer and pointed the knife at him. It is to Officer Kossow’s credit that instead of his pistol, he drew a taser and, after issuing several commands to drop the knife, discharged the taser into Gabriel for approximately 5 seconds.
The taser worked as it should, immobilizing Gabriel Bitterman and allowing the sobbing woman to run from the room to safety. The barbs were removed from Gabriel and he was handcuffed.
The MTV crew caught the audio from a microphone on the officer and listened as Officer Kossow called for an ambulance. Per police policy, after a taser is used on a suspect, an ambulance must be called for as soon as possible.
Sadly, Gabriel Bitterman, who was lying face-up on the floor while he was waiting for his ambulance ride to jail, stopped breathing. Once Officer Kossow noticed that Gabriel wasn’t breathing, he took the handcuffs off and started CPR just as paramedics arrived.
Gabriel was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 in the morning.
While Gabriel’s baby’s momma is probably a bit sad, she’s young enough to find a new and less psychotic baby’s daddy. She no longer has to worry about what Gabriel Bitterman is going to do the next time he snaps. Society no longer has to worry about supporting Gabriel, or paying for his food, housing and medical care in jail or prison.
Really, the person who misses Gabriel Bitterman the most is his baby’s momma’s daddy – Robert Peterson.
Robert Peterson is a bit upset with Officer Kossow, whose taser use has now forced him to contribute more to his grandchild:
I don’t think this was justified. I believe this could have been prevented. I don’t understand why Mace wasn’t used.
While there were several reasons why Mace wasn’t used, the biggest reason could have been because it has no effect other than really pissing off most hostile individuals who are on intoxicants – as Gabriel Bitterman appeared to be during his last little incident.
Robert Peterson told the press that while Gabriel Bitterman shouldn’t have been carrying a knife or threatening people with it, he didn’t think that Gabriel was really going to hurt his daughter – he thinks Gabriel was just going to hurt himself. It’s just that he wasn’t really good with a knife, and that he didn’t know where his body ended and his girlfriend’s began.
Robert Peterson also stated that he had no idea why Gabriel Bitterman had dragged his daughter into the back room.
Gabe was a good kid. He tried as hard as he could to be a family. We did a lot of things together, and now he’s gone.
Robert told the press that Gabriel was part of the city’s Youthbuild Program that helps young people gain experience in building affordable housing and that he was learning valuable skills that could have helped him support his family. Gabriel Bitterman also said that he and Robert Peterson spent a lot of time together, fishing and generally hanging out, and now they can’t.
Also, Gabriel can’t contribute to the care and feeding of his baby now that he’s no longer employable – except possibly as a speed bump or paperweight.
How sad.

well, i started out as a correctional officer, then went through the academy, and am now back at the jail to do my mandatory time before i can go out on the street..i can’t speak for all jails, or for all deputies, but i love my job. Sure, there are the i/m’s who try to make life hard, but most of them are entertaining at most LOL (although that doesn’t mean they should be trusted)…We have every type of criminal you can think of, and I find that if you treat them with respect, they will return it. The golden rule, isn’t it? But to everyone with an idea about our job…we’re kind of underpaid, although we will be getting a raise in april that will bump us up to 42,000/yr, and we are kind of overworked..but hey, you go into the job knowing that. no use in complaining once youre there….
WTF? Seems like Robert cared more about Gabriel than he did his own daughter. I hope the mother learns how to raise that child on her own without any help from her father.

OMG. If that were my man hitting on me, my dad would have done killed him with his bare hands. I cannot believe a father could stand back and be ok with Gabriel hitting and threatening his own daughter. His flesh and blood. No WONDER the daughter kept taking Gabriel back…she didn’t think there was anything wrong with the situation she was putting herself in day after day. Seems like the world is a better place without Gabriel living in it.
Oh man, tough call. I’ll say this, if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s whining parents of dirtbag criminals who tries to make life miserable for a cop when the officer does his job and the kid ends up hurt or dead. We had the same thing happen here in CT a few years back. A New Haven cop shot a 17 year old after a chase when the kid backed up towards him trying to run the cop over. This little delinquent had a record as long as I’m tall, and his parent were mostly no-shows throughout his life. Well, after the shooting, here comes mama, dressed all in white robes like some king of Muslim nun, crying police brutality, racism, and any other -ism she could come up with. If you believed her, Maleek (the kid) was a saint and the cop was the grand dragon of the KKK. The case was investigated by the State police, and then by the FBI, and the officer was cleared both times, but that didn’t shut her up. What bugged me the most was how the media followed her and her crackpot entourage around and hung on her every word. Three and four years later she was still popping up on the news, just to rub salt in the officer’s wounds. (He was devastated by the incident, especially by the fact that the kid was so young. This guy was no cowboy)
So I’d like to tell Bobo to shut the fuck up. I’m betting that the cop is feeling pretty bad about the whole deal, and doesn’t need some ignorant fool running his mouth about things he doesn’t understand. Why he isn’t grateful to the cop for saving his daughter’s life is beyond me. Maybe he thinks he can whip up some public sympathy, then sue the city/cops and make a few bucks off dead Gabe’s body. I can hear it now:
Bobo – “But Your Honor, he was the son I never had. We hung out together. We hunted and fished together. We beat our women’s asses together. I deserve to be compensated”
Judge – “Shut the fuck up, Bobo”
So anyways, I don’t think anyone deserves hell here, but Robert Peterson deserves as much ridicule as we can pile on his dumb ass.

1. Mace does not always work, Gabby boy, if maced, could have still slashed baby momma’s throat and still posed a threat.
2. Tazering usually just stuns the person, although it occasionally kills a dirtbag – oops
3. When I lived in MA a drug using epileptic was maced by an officer and died – now Mace is illegal in MA without a weapons permit! Just because 1 scumbag died, MA more MA women are easier to rape!
There will never be a 100% non-lethal method of force.
Anyway with Gabby Boy dead, I hope the chances of the child having a good life increase. Unfortunately, if the mother is going to allow a penis belonging to such a POS, odds are the next penis is going to come with another POS attached!
i think with the attention the fathers getting for all this, he’s just eating it up. i’m hoping once this all cools off for them, the father will realize what a scumbag he is and be a decent grandfather. parents should try to set good examples, and encourage their children to make goals and standards for themselves. lets hope they can pull it all off before the little one is corrupted too. i’m not holding my breath though.

Robert Peterson is an idiot. He should do some reading about ‘excited delerium.’ Listen folks… this is a little hard to explain but here it goes. The Taser HAS NEVER BEEN SHOWN TO KILL ANYBODY. I’ll say that again… THE TASER HAS NEVER BEEN SHOWN TO KILL ANYBODY. Google excited delerium for a technical explanation.. but it’s like this. A person that is NOT heavily intoxicated and is NOT under the influence of drugs will virtually unharmed after the Taser is deployed. Those factors, coupled with the deployment of a taser, can result in death.
What it really comes down to is this…. don’t make the cops use force on you, and you won’t die. You won’t even get hurt. In fact, just don’t break the law and you’ll NEVER have to speak with them. People piss me off so much. I’ll bet the media was airing a story of possible police brutality before the cop went home for the day. Absolutely terrible.

Maybe the cop should have shot him with his 9mm. That would have removed any doubt about the result. Tasers are classified as “less than lethal force”, not a “safe” alternative. Sometimes the perp dies. The only way to prevent that from happening is to (now pay attention all you not so intelligent criminals, there’s going to be a test later.) FOLLOW THE OFFICERS ORDERS, TO THE LETTER. Anyone who blames the cop for what happened to Gabe is a grade A dumbass and needs to shut the fuck up.

We had a bit of a pub brawl in our little town the other night and the day after one bloke was complaining that he had been tasared. He showed all that cared to look, the two bruises he got and when i asked him why he got tasared, he said it was because he had hit a police officer. I think assulting someone is a pretty adequete reason to be tasared. Turns out the officer had asked him several times to settle down and he just got more and more riled up. He swung a few times and the officer continued to ask him to settle down. Finally he got in a hit and the cop pulled his weapon of choice and fired.
This guy as so plastered that when he got down to the police station, he pissed on the floor and backed his arse up to a window and tried but failed to crap against it. Classy fella this one. I asked him why he had been THAT drunk on a Monday night when he had a missus and three kids waiting at home for him. He told me the missus had been at the pub and was also embroiled in the brawl…..
The moral of this story is this: if you dont want to have the heavy hand of the law brought against you, DONT BREAK THE LAW!!!

Seriously, we had the same thing happen here (but the dead tazed guy was black). A “civil rights” attorney from DC filed a $30 million lawsuit against the county, the officer and the taser maker.

Gabriel and daddy Robert were having a good ol’ time riding the rails that night when baby momma had to come home and spoil their fun. Being all jacked up and thinking he was god, Gabriel threatened b.momma within an inch of her life. Then, when the cops broke up the party and tasered Gabby his poor little heart just couldnt take any more abuse and promptly gave out.
Now daddy Robert is pissed his hook up is gone for good.
i think that they twisted the story…i know Gabe Bitterman. i was a close friend of his. what happened was wrong in his part, but he didnt deserve to die. he was getting his life on track. yes he has a bad history. he never stalked a 13 year old. i know that for a fact. he got that charge because the mom wanted her daughter to stop going around him. Gabe was a good kid. neither Robert or Gabe should be said that they are going to hell. The girlfriend said he didnt have the knife to her throat. She also said that he didnt even have the knife in his hand when he turned to look at the cop. he was threatening to hurt himself not her. So who ever reads this story on this site needs to know that its bogus! i know what happened.

Seriously though, did he miss out on watching Cops on TV or did he actually think he could take out a cop. Now, we all know the Cop was within his rights to shoot this dumb fuck pedophile cock sucking asshole. Instead, the Cop showed him mercy by trying to subdue him with a Taser. He didn’t plant two rounds into his chest, like he had the right and in my opinion the obligation to society to do.
So, if he was such a great guy, why were there restraining orders against him? Why were there past charges? Why did he have a knife if he was such a great upstanding and honorable citizen contributing so much to society?

Unless you were there and saw what happened with your own eyes, you don’t KNOW what happened. Three people know what happened. The cop, the girlfriend, and the deceased. It looks like girlfriend and dad are probably looking for a lawsuit, so of course they will bullshit. If none of this happened, why would the cop have gone there in the first place? He wouldn’t have. Cops don’t just go to random houses on the off chance that a knife-wielding asshole needs to be taken down. Get serious.

Oh yeah, i forgot about that little tid-bit of info. It was all filmed. Surely that footage has to be admissable in court if the family goes ahead with a civil suit. Cant deny he threatened the officer when its all on tape.
Who the hell would want to be a police officer? The man saved someones life, only to have them turn around and try to ruin his. Ungrateful sacks of shit if you ask me.
I can’t speak for all cops, but I’ll say this for me. I do it because there is a thin blue line that needs to be held. That line represents the difference between order and chaos. It’s not a brick wall, but those of us willing to stand on this line do what we can, when we can, to keep good people safe. We put up with a lot of bullshit, but a good cop can go home after his/her shift and still know that the line is there. That knowledge holds a deep satisfaction.

Let me be the first to say that who ever started this should burn in hell. not only was gabe a wonderful citizen, father, boyfriend, son, and neighbor he was an all around great guy. knowing gabe for a couple months he was a great person. not everyone has the best past and he was turning his life around for the better. He went to work everyday to provide for his family and made sure they had a roof over their head, clothes on their back and food in their stomaches. He didnt get free handouts from health and human services like the rest of the society that thinks its okay not to work and get things for free he had to work to get housing and extra money in his pocket that paid for the rest of their bills. His girlfriend has a different perspective of what happened that night and until you were there and saw what happened everyone should keep their opinions to themselves. Only those who have nothing better to do then judge others especially the deceased need to get a life and focus on fixing yours instead of talking shit about others. And i hope the officer that killed him has a hard time sleeping at night and knows that he killed a mothers only son and a little girls dad that she will never get to know the way she should of.

I will be the first to admit that in the past gabe did have two run ins with the law… does that mean he deserved what happened to him? or that his mom deserved to loose her only son? or how about a little six month old girl that got tucked into bed every night by her dad and adored her dad will never get to know the great guy that he was and how much he really loved her. As I recall, the cop that tasered him initiated CPR.

As for the child abuse…..WE had the baby that night, and the girlfriend wasn’t aware of that, and he WASN’T drunk….he had taken a sleeping pill to help him fall asleep better after working long hours that day. I, as well as many other neighbors were there that night and watched his lifeless body get carried out of the apartment, we were there holding his mother, and his girlfriend while they were trying to grasp the fact that GOD had taken Gabe so soon. We were there when the internal affairs officer came in and explained to us that the Lincoln police department is more than likely in the wrong. I attended my friends funeral yesterday….as well as about 150 others. He was a great father….a wonderful friend, and he loved “the girlfriend” more than i have ever seen anyone love somebody before. An LPN is not the same as a nurse. A BSN is nowhere near the level of a nurse. So, when you stated that nursing home nurses are the highest paid you are now stating that you lied. Or that Brittany lied. Or that you are both lieing.

A BSN is a bachelor’s degree, equating to 4 years in college. It is a nurse, usually a Registered Nurse (RN) and they get paid quite decently depending where they go. CNA’s and some others like LPN or LVN work in nursing homes, where they dont get paid a lot. Even an ADN (associates degree in nursing) is still a nurse. just wanted to let ya know, since i’m going for my BSN

I knew gabriel since 2003,this baby is not his only child,i have a little boy of gabes, we dated for 4 years an not one time did he ever lay a hand on me, he did nothing but respect me an do evertthing he possibly could for me, ya he had some problems and when i left him his problems got worse, he never got the help he needed, he is a wonderful man, an could have been a wonderful dad. Hi, I used to date Gabe. For little over a year. He has his moments. He held a piece of broken piece of glass to my throat. And you guys are wrong about him! You would have to know him. He was a drunk. The alcohol would make him different. And when he was silber, he was a great guy to be with very funny and very fun. You should all go to hell for writing and thinking such hateful thought about a young man taken so early from life. Murdered is what it should be called. Another man killing another man. It is horrible and there are other ways to deal with that. I know that Gabe would never have went through with it. He was caring, when he was silber, and probably should have had some medication. As for what the cop did, calling it murder is way off base. He used a less than lethal option in a situation where he would have been justified in shooting Gabe dead. In some rare cases, people do die after being tazed, but the for the vast majority of cases it is a safe and effective way to subdue a perp.You can’t hold the officer responsible for Gabe’s death, because there’s no way he could have expected that he’d drop dead. It all would have been a moot point anyway if Gabe had dropped the knife when he was told to do so.
