With children – all girls – ranging from six years old to one year of age, Thomas Freeman and Ruby Freeman certainly had to have their hands full with the hassle and expense of caring for those five children. Kids are expensive, and many parents would go insane with the necessities inherent with taking care of three kids – much less five.
Thomas Freeman and Ruby Freeman got around the headaches involved with caring for so many children by efficiently storing the five little girls in two separate rooms of their apartment.
Even more efficient was the method that Thomas Freeman and Ruby Freeman used to feed the girls. Once a day – provided the Freemans remembered – food would be tossed into each of the rooms that held the girls. As a result of the efficient feeding method of the Freemans, the girls were rather thin. Dangerously thin, in fact, which was an observation that Child Protective Services made when they showed up with police on the 23rd of September, 2008.
As slow as I am, even I know that your children should not just be left in a room, soaked in urine. Thomas Freeman and Ruby Freeman apparently thought that this was OK.

Police and Child Protective Service workers were a little annoyed with the state of the Freeman apartment. Large trash bags full of rotten garbage were scattered hither and yon, and there were piles of used diapers in the bathrooms.
Sergeant Aaron James told the press:
They were all frail, thin, malnourished. We’re disgusted – there is no other word to use when you see conditions like this – there is no excuse.
John Roberts, Executive Director of a local mission, stated:
In my opinion, there’s absolutely no reason a family should live in those conditions. If they are having financial problems, that’s what we are here for. There’s no reason for a family to not have food, not have clothing, not have housing here in America and more specifically in the Charleston area.
According to public records, the Freeman children have been taken out of the home three or four times, but have always returned. This might change now.
On one occasion in the past that led to the Freeman family being investigated by Child Protective Services, Cynthia Wheeler, who is Ruby Freeman’s mother, said she hugged one of her granddaughters – only to discover her soaked in urine:
I leaned over to give that baby a hug and she was drenched, literally drenched from head to toe.
Thomas and Ruby Freeman are now in jail. They are being fed three times a day.
They have each been charged with five counts of child neglect. Their first court appearance is scheduled for the 3rd of October, 2008.
If convicted, Thomas and Ruby Freeman face up to five years in prison.
Ruby Freeman’s mother and stepfather have stated that while they aren’t defending the pair and that they aren’t surprised by the charges, they want to clear some things up.
Rodney Wheeler, the stepfather of Ruby Freeman, stated:
I am not saying they didn’t have other allegations of neglect, but I just wanted to clear up the kids have been fed.
The Wheelers are glad that the children are no longer living with the Freemans.

It has a video of Ruby’s Mom and Step-dad parading the kids in front of the news. At least the news crew is kind enough to scamble the girls faces.
Mom sits there, with here full mustache, and talks abut how one of them was soaked in urine. What? Your grandchild is soaked in urine and you just hug them goodbye? Exactly where in the same hell is your brain your stupid bearded hold hag? You grab all 5 of your grandkids and you run out of that house with them. If the parents give you any grief call the cops, they’ll fix it right then and there.
This is an excellent job by Children Services in paying attention to a family and doing what they need to do to help these little kids out. The girls are temporarily with the father’s parents until the court decides if those grandparents, better it sounds than Ruby’s parents, can provide a home for them.

I’d be interested to know the last time a Child Protective Services Worker visited the home and what actions (probably none) the parents had taken since the last time these little girls were removed. Have they stayed with their paternal grandparents each time? Do these poor little girls have a court-apponted special advocate? I think all of the people involved who eren’t doing their jobs should go to hell as well.

Maybe the Department of Health and Human Services should take the Humane Societies lead – get the kids checked for lice, fleas, and other parasites, they could make sure they can be socialized properly, they would spay or nueter the little ones before before adoption, and the ones that absolutely no one wants could be euthanized.

This is one thing that I’ve noticed in similar stories and never really quite understood – the parents are both quite fat. I’d say they border on morbid obesity (if not already there). So they obviously had plenty of food on hand. They just decided to not give it to their children? It makes no sense to me. And it never will.

Pick up a mop and bucket and start cleaning. Put the kids in the bath. Bring some food over for them. Smack your son/daughter across the head and tell them to pull their head in and care for their children properly.Ring child protection if all else fails.
Not that Child Protection has a great track record of saving kids. Was it four times these kids had been taken away and then brought back? Come on!!! Having your kids taken once should be enough to make the parents make some serious changes. They got a second chance, and a third and a fourth…How many chances do they get before the kids end up dead from starvation?

Why do people have children if they don’t want them? It’s obvious they were feeding them more as babies because a baby is very delicate. My theory is they like the idea of babies, cause they’re cute and make cute sounds and don’t fight or answer back, but once they start talking (if they even bothered to teach them to do so) then they can’t be bothered with them… so they go have another and keep the older ones in the closet.

Imagine how these kids must have felt. Hungry, scared, abandoned, unloved, itchy, sweaty, smelly they must have felt…..And knowing how they looked and smelled would have destroyed any positive self image they had. I ( having five school aged children, two of who are girls with long hair) know what its like to have a mild dose of head lice. You scratch till you bleed almost. But to be INFESTED!!!

I’d like to know what was the source of income for these “parents”. I am sure that in many cases these types of parents are being subsidized or receiving their full income from the area taxpayers.
I know a few families that get theri money from workman’s comp. The family that completely depends on it also gets section 8 housing and other forms of aid. Another family the father was seriously hurt and then took some bad medical advice. Mother stll workls. While they get some form of aid every so often, their house is clean and being worked on for energy efficientcy, children are educated, 1 is wicked smart. Point is – using government programs for their intended purpose is a good thing, but those who abuse such are just trash.
Even if i was affered a billion dollars to treat my kids so poorly, i wouldnt. Thats what being a parent is about. These scum were not parents, they were breeders. Hell, they even kept their kids in worse conditions that battery hens!

I agree that what they did was wrong, and it jeopardized the children’s lives. Obviously the Freeman’s are a perfect example to make a case for government arbitrated birth control.
However, I’m pretty sure that lady was made fun of her entire life. There is a person on my street who has a fairly serious issue with his eyes. He isn’t easy to look at, but he’s one of the sweetest guys I’ve ever met. He has two teenaged sons, both of which are as healthy as horses (twin linebackers for the local high school as well, that are pretty ridiculous on the field).
Half the people here making comments act like they are just looking for something to lash out at. The Wheeler’s have plenty of shortcomings and flaws to keep PYSIH busy, why not try to elevate yourself above cheap shots?

It’s also a reaction to the awful things they did, in that we’re kinda stunned by some of these things and we have to vent somehow. Sometimes it’s satisfying to get into the dirt and sling it at them. It’s a relief, cheap or no.
I suppose it’s a soft spot for me personally. My son had four surgeries on his eyes before he was three years old. When he gets tired, one of his eyes gets a little lazy. He’s nine years old now, and he’s immensely sensitive about it.
If you want to rag on her for being fat, by all means. Over 90% of the overweight population is due to sloth and bad eating habits. Hell, even go for the fact that she’s slovenly.
However, ragging on someone because of something they were born with.. well I hate to say it but that’s a sin itself. Call it wrath upon the victim, or call it pride of your lack of that particular imperfection.
Cheap shots are a distraction from the point. There are tons of bad people who are discussed her, but being cheap isn’t just insulting that person.. it’s insulting everyone else who has that affliction. Who cares if she has a lazy eye? What does that have to do with her being a bad parent? Stuart Scott has a lazy eye, and he’s one of the most esteemed sports analysts in the business.
It’s just as bad as racism or any other form of hateful prejudice. A lazy eye is just as much a difference as skin color or religion.
It’s one thing to have a directed response to the actions of a selfish, irresponsible trash heap like Miss Wheeler.. it’s another thing entirely to lash out in an uncontrollable manner for the sake of your own relief. Oh I agree as far as PC. I have no problem admitting that I hope some of these people rot in hell, and I’d innately love to be the one who flips the switch. In fact, I’m all for taking a crap on the bill of rights and going straight for cruel, unusual and downright medieval sometimes on these bastards.
At the same time, one of themes here is that evil isn’t the worst thing.. sometimes it’s the “indifference of good people” that is the worst crime that can be committed. Sometimes that refers to good people looking the other way at crimes, other times it refers to people being indifferent about the means to achieve a good end.
That’s what I’m getting at. If you hurt 100 good people to deface 1 bad person, then we aren’t really doing much good. It’s like using racial epithets to attach Bin Laden or Al Queda. Not all people from those nations or ethnicities are bad people. It’s those comments that fuel hate crimes, which I would argue account for more deaths, evil and property damage than all of the criminals outlined on this site.

I have an exception here. I think in time of war, a uniformed soldier can choose to deface and demean their enemy with a racial epithet in order to cope with the consequences of war. I don’t condone the commission of war crimes or torture, but if a uniformed member of our military would like to call Jihadi, Hajis, I’m supportive.
I think what you’re trying to say is a sort of titration of the hate this site engenders and the basic humanity we try to connect to. I call or cribbed this from someone as a Monsters versus Humans debate. We demean the criminal and call them a Monster. We’re at war with Monsters who rape, mutilate, harass and kill.
We embrace the victim as our own, and castigate the “evil-doer” to the “red rover” side of monsters. There are folks who can honestly repent and come on back over, but this site rarely deals with those borderline cases. Baby rapers are universally despised, and that gives us all a common ground to stand on. Some of us argue and fence over specific degrees of guilt. There’s at least one case where the author may be wrong, because of bad information provided by someone else. That doesn’t hurt anything. Most here aren’t pressing Hell thinking that God is counting the tally and putting it in his book of life against the evil doer. Some who say no may think that it’s going in for them, but the site does not claim to have the power of damnation, merely the sentiment and consensus of those who read.
Bah, I’m making this too complicated. I imagine a barbican, a fort on one hill starring at the fort of the bad guys. This is a grouping effort to help identify the bad guys among us and also to remind folks of what bad really is. At the end of the day, the part that warms my heart most is when a victim shows up, thanks someone here, and moves on. That’s a good enough reason to forgive a lot of the shouts and anger, because even if some folks are waving a torch and pitchfork, they’re still on the side of that victim, and would use those tools to defend her.

My god one eye is going to the shop, and the other is coming back with the change. Fucking hell look at the photo of the so called father he’s got a double chin so while those babies were being starved, you can guarantee that, mother and father of the year here were eating, and plenty of it judging by their sizes. And just five years, they are lucky that the children were still alive when cps came with the police, looks like cps got it right for once, because if those children had of died they’d be looking at a death penalty which is what they would have deserved.
The father was sentenced in July 2009 to 1 year after pleading guilty to child neglect resulting in bodily injury. I’m not sure about Ruby; the judge wanted her to have a psychiatric evaluation before sentencing her.
