Jon Pomeroy and Rebecca Long
Back in 2005, both 43-year-old Jon Pomeroy and his love, 44-year-old Rebecca Long appeared on the radar screens of their local authorities after a Cascade Elementary School teacher called police.
This teacher was a bit concerned that the daughter of Jon Pomeroy – and the stepdaughter of Rebecca Long – was being abused by one or both parents. A sheriff’s deputy came to the school and interviewed everyone involved – the teacher making the report, the 11-year-old girl who was the subject of the report, and both Jon Pomeroy and Rebecca Long. The deputy inspected the Pomeroy/Long home, as well.
The girl’s room was a remodeled portion of the garage, with deadbolt locks on the door into the house and another door on the back of the room which led to the backyard. While it had deadbolts as well, it was unlocked when the deputy came by. The deputy advised Rebecca Long that having a key-locked door that prevented someone from escaping in the event of a fire was a housing code violation. Rebecca replied that the locks were there when they bought the house and that they would be removed.
She also mentioned that she had been wanting to get the family to counseling, because she hadn’t really hit it off with the girl since she’d married her father, but that Jon Pomeroy hadn’t really thought much of that idea.
And, after all the indignation was released and the finger-pointing was done, there was no evidence found that could result in the arrest of anyone – so the deputy just forwarded the information to Child Protective Services.
A Child Protective Services caseworker assigned to the case stopped by the house and did find evidence of neglect. The girl in question did weigh 60 pounds, which was thin but not desperately so. Rebecca Long admitted that the girl got on her nerves and, as a result, Rebecca would lock the girl into her room for a while. Rebecca denied that she ever withheld food or water from her stepdaughter, however. She also conceded that locking an 11-year-old into her room wasn’t the best way to handle any behavior problems that the family might be facing and, with her fingers crossed, promised never to do it again.
Jon Pomeroy chimed in with the fact that he worked long and late hours and slept during most of the day. Jon added that he was conscious enough to realize that his wife and his daughter both enjoyed pushing each other’s buttons, but stated that he wasn’t aware that his daughter was being locked up for extended periods of time. According to Jon Pomeroy, Rebecca Long was telling him that his daughter was taking things and handling the discipline herself.
Plausible deniability rocks.
The Child Protective Services caseworker determined that while there was evidence of neglect, Jon Pomeroy and Rebecca Long couldn’t really screw up the child unless they were given a few years. Three years should be enough for Jon and Rebecca to have enough time to show the girl who the boss really was. Until then, the caseworker recommended counseling and closed the case a month later after a visit determined that the abuse had been stopped.
The abuse did not stop, however, instead becoming a case of hydraulic despotism.
At its finest.
With the CPS leash gone from around her neck, Rebecca Long stepped up the pace, locking the girl in her room for days, weeks, months. Rebecca Long strictly limited the girl’s food and water intake, using starvation and dehydration as some kind of twisted disciplinary process. The girl was given half a Dixie cup of water a day. Not a full cup, because that would be too much. No, half is just fine, yes sir.
When the girl was allowed her monthly shower, Rebecca Long would stand over her and prevent any sneaking of the shower water. Swallowing shower water was not allowed.
Neither was swallowing the water that the girl used when she brushed her teeth – controlling this was a problem that Rebecca Long eventually solved by just eliminating the process altogether.
At one point, the girl was so desperate for something to drink that she would anxiously watch for water to condense on the window of her room and use a straw that she kept hidden to suck up what she could. She did that until Rebecca found the straw and took it.
By feeding the girl toast, Rebecca made it easier for the girl to eat when her teeth began falling out, which was considerate.
Jon Pomeroy’s daughter was locked in her room, and secured by a double-key deadbolt which was engaged both day and night. The girl’s younger brother, who I’m going to assume was fed on a regular basis, was able to sneak the key from Ms. Stepbitch at times and used the opportunities to let his sister out while Jon Pomeroy and Rebecca Long slept. Afraid of what would happen if Rebecca heard the faucet turn on during the middle of the night, the teenager chose to get a quiet drink from the toilet.
Eventually Rebecca Long found out about the midnight toilet runs and, after a long, thoughtful discussion about respect and boundaries, gave the girl all the water she could drink and started to let her come eat with the family.
Just kidding. Actually, Rebecca duct-taped her step-daughter’s hands behind her back and dunked the girl’s head into the toilet. For a while after that, both the children were forced to sleep on the floor in their parent’s bedroom, with a heavy dresser pushed in front of the door each night so the kids couldn’t sneak out again.
Life sucked for this girl, and there was no sign of any light at the end of the tunnel. Starting in 2004, the children were home-schooled, and once that little incident with the authorities in 2005 was over, Rebecca pulled the kids out of the once-a-week program that they had been enrolled in. Instead of allowing the girl to read or use the family computer, Rebecca forced her stepdaughter to sit on a chair in front of her – and to stay quiet and still.
Jon Pomeroy’s daughter was warned repeatedly about telling anyone about the abuse she was suffering, and Jon was a bit clueless about why his little girl was…well….so little. In 2008, now 14, the girl looked more like a 7-year-old. She weighed 47 pounds and looked like a concentration camp survivor.
She had not told anyone about the abuse including her father, the girl said, because her stepmother warned her against it. Finally, however, on the 13th of August, 2008, someone heard the girl’s screams and called the police.
This time, when sheriff’s deputies showed up, they took one look at the girl and her 12-year-old brother and took the kids away from Jon Pomeroy and Rebecca Long, putting the children in the care of a foster family.
The 14-year-old girl was rushed to a hospital, where she was treated for severe malnutrition. She had extensive dental problems. Every tooth that the girl had was either eroded, chipped or loose – or all three. Six teeth were removed and the rest were crowned.
During her two week stay at the hospital, started to put on weight. Doctors estimated that the girl hadn’t gained any weight since she was 9, which was a conservative estimate. She actually lost over 10 pounds.
In her interview with the authorities, Rebecca Long admitted that she and her stepdaughter had been having a bit of a “power struggle.” She admitted that she had been giving the girl half a Dixie cup of water a day. She admitted that she had dunked the girl’s head into the toilet. She admitted that the girl hadn’t been to a doctor in over half a decade, insisting that her kids never get germs and never get sick.
Jon Pomeroy stated that he knew his wife wasn’t giving his daughter food or water, but felt that it was between his wife and the girl. He did recognize that a 14-year-old looking like a 7-year-old was a bit “odd” but decided against taking the girl to a doctor, despite having health insurance.
On the 22nd of August, 2008, a search warrant revealed evidence of the abuse that had taken place over the last few years. Interestingly, the two family dogs were well-fed and had been to the vet within the last month.
The children are doing well in foster care, with the 14-year-old gaining 20 pounds in the six weeks after being removed from the home of her father and stepmother. Her foster father says that she goes to a private school, she’s making friends, and is showing no signs of any behavioral issues.
Jon Pomeroy and Rebecca Long were charged with first- and second-degree criminal mistreatment. They were booked and released after each posted a $20,000 bond. They are scheduled to be arraigned on the 27th of October, 2008.

How horrific were these so called “parents”. The father couldn’t see what was going on, was he blind? Sounds like his new wifey was trying to give the girl a slow painful death, which sounds like a version of Munchousen by Proxy Syndrome. When I see or hear anything like this, I believe the psycho stepmom deserves to be treated the same way she was treating this girl, and the father is no better to be a spectator and do nothing to protect his daughter. Lock the stepbiotch in a little 4×4 cell, let her have toast and water (sometimes) till she gets to be skin and bones, and punish her if she attempts to drink water from the toilet. This woman has the audacity to brag about her knitting on her blog page, and show the boyfriend and son wearing sweaters she made them, while she is starving a child. She is a worthless human being that deserves punishment for her actions. Since the father sat idly by doing nothing, he should be punished as well!
Not Munchausen by proxy, because people that do that are doing it for the attention. This was not done for attention but vindictiveness. The stepmom didn’t want any reminders of her new hubby’s previous flings anywhere about. She also probably resented the fact that she was burdened with the care of the child. Definately NOT Munchausen.

I just don’t understand how two obviously intelligent people can treat a child in this manner and think they won’t get caught and punished. I am not even mentioning the lack of love and care which is obvious. What could they all have been thinking? What were the other children thinking? Why didn’t they do or say something?

The Current Criminal charges against Jon & Rebecca:

However there was a pretty recent simular case :
A man and his girlfriend both received eight-year prison sentences
Danny Abegg, 27, and Marilea Mitchell, 22, were convicted in December of first-degree criminal mistreatment. Prosecutors said the couple did not feed the boy and deliberately withheld food as a way to punish 4-year-old Shayne Abegg
So , if Jon & Rebbeca are both charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment like this other dirtbag couple were . Best we can hope for is 8 years each. I highly dought them getting a lesser amount because the state is still rocking from this other case and DSH is currently being sued for $22 million after droping the ball on it. Lots of finger pointing going on as people say WTF , it happened again ???

Basically due to a lack of fluid intake the body starts shutting down . No salaiva means the teeth dry up and become brittle. They either fall out or break.
Chances are good , extensive irreversible damage was done to her body, It will never really recover from this abuse. Her body will never forget this happened and she will spend the rest of her life fighting eating disorders and health issues.

Here in Central New York we have a case that has finally resulted in three arrests. Child neglect at it’s finest, but Erin Maxwell, age 11, didn’t make it, and Social Services were at that residence numerous times.
So happy to see this young girl can make it. I really, really hope she’s in some very good counseling. All the best to her and her brother.
Yes, it is good to hear she will survive. What kind of future does she have with this hanging over her head? How could she feel knowing her dad didn’t give a damn, her stepmom is the bitch from hell, and the brother just didn’t want it to happen to him, so he ignored it? Hopefully she will find some foster parents that will give her a real loving home she desperately needs!
She has survived so far because she is a survivor. She will struggle and fall and pick herself back up again. For this girl to still be alive says that she is a fighter.

i think i know exactly what happened here. the stepmother is a life sucking alien that absorbed all the positive qualities of the father and left him an empty shell that can only sleep all day and work all night. so she can have money and privacy to conduct whatever alien experiments she feels like. she had to lock the kids away cause they stumbled across her true identity and the empty shell wasn’t making enough money to fund her experiments and feed the girl. aliens have to make sacrifices. it all makes sense.

Military police live in glass houses…If they break the law, the whole base finds out and then the respect is lost…It’s hard to regain trust and respect from military personnel

Take several spotlights and place them in a circle in the middle of this circle you have said scumbag – with their eyes pried open ala Clockwork Orange. Of course they are strapped to a office chair. Now spin them around at great speeds until they puke or pass out or both. To wake them up use smelling salts and then mild (50,000 volts) shocks to get their attentions. The reason for this is they better eat their dinner (their own vomit) Now for the continuing exercise. A little salt, lemon juice, razor blade and a filthy bum to tear open the wounds. Then for Step-Bitch how about a trip to a deserted island loaded with serial rapist and sadist? And for dear old caring dad a trip to Federal pound’em in the ass prison? Where he can learn to Ride the Whip. That would be the perfect start of torture for these turds.
OK, let’s make this a real feast with dad and step-mom!
For appetizers, we can start of with some punching, kicking, and slapping using whips, wires, and clubs. A little electric shocking, burning with cigarettes, heated instruments and chemicals sounds a bit light and tasty too!
Then for the main course, we can deliciously stretch their limbs apart, smash their fingers and toes, and cause some penetrating injuries such as stab and gunshot wounds!
Finally for dessert, we can remove their limbs and organs and add salt, chili, and gasoline in their wounds and body cavities.

Its pretty apparent Jon nor Rebecca have missed many meals. The little girl is never mention in any of Rebecca’s blogs. Three or four years? For torturing and nearly killing a child? That means they could be out on probation in a year or two. This makes me reallly sick. Even 8 years is not enough. If a stranger had kidnapped and repeatedly tortured someone, they would get several years in jail..but parents can do this to a child and get off in 3 or 4 years? I think the legislators who treat child molesters and abusers with such leniency should also spend some time in hell.
Unfortunately, people like this exist in every town. They look and sound like you and I. The truth only shows behind closed doors. They are the face of evil. Kids seem to have no rights. Please make it so kids never have to go back to any abusive parents. Please change our laws!

Bio-mom abandoned the children and never paid her child support, visited, sent card, letters or made phone calls and then lied to eveyone that the children had been kidnapped to explain where on earth her children were.
My source tells me she and her new husband was notified 2 years ago where her children were and who Jon Pomeroy was married to. She never bothered to find anything out about her babies she proclaimed to all that she loved and missed so much.

Cricket , very well could be the real mommy . Bio-mom met and married in Albuquerque during the 1990s. They later moved to Utah, divorced, and Pomeroy was given custody of their children. I heard she just up and left Jon’s ass and moved back to Bosque Farms, N.M. and never bothered to be a part of the childrens life. I know the bio-moms parents hadnt seen hide nor hair of the grandkids in years. So Donna story seems to be true.

Ok I am back. It’s been a while and this is the first story I read. It is pathetic. I have a 13 year old daughter who is 5′4″ (an inch taller than me) and weighs a healthy 130.8 lbs. She always makes sure we know about the .8. hahaha. Anyway, I could never, EVER in a million years deny her anything to drink or eat. It actually makes me mad when she asks to get something out of the refrigerator. hahahahha. This is the first I am hearing about details of this poor child’s ordeal. OMFG!!! I live in Kent, WA and CANNOT FUCKING BELIEVE that both parents have both bailed out ($4,000. for both) and COULD FACE UP TO 48 fucking months in prison!!!! Why is this not attempted murder??? Torture apparently is childs play in this state! What the hell was this poor girl who is never out of site of her crazy assed step-bitch-mom supposed to do?? I was physically abused by my mother along with my two sisters and I can tell you that for a child, unless a grown up says something or questions the parent the child considers this “normal”. When my parents divorce came up and custody was being established neighbors and friends came out of the woodwork to say they used to hear us screaming and yelling and would see welts and bruises but NO BODY did a fucking thing! What is CPS for anyway? I am appauled and think this is outrageous. I am also grateful that child is still alive and pray that she can grow to be a healthy adult–with years of counseling of course!
I had a similar experience growing up Phiona, and you are dead right…more people need to speak up.
It could mean the difference between life and death for a child. CPS is crap…they dont do a lot of follow up and tend to leave kids where they are…you just have to browse this site to see that im right…so now, if i have suspicions, i go directly to the police. I make sure they take a written statement from me and then follow up with phone calls to find out what is being done. The police tend to take these complaints much more seriously than CPS, because they know that its gonna be them who have to arrest the parents and carry out a child on a streatcher if they dont.

Has anyone heard what happened on Nov. 18th? I’ve been searching all of the news sites that carried the story and no one has an up-date. Do they not care that these people a punished? Now that the story isn’t as sensational as it was in the beginning, no one is publishing the results of what happened to these scum. I hope they get more than the suggested sentancing. And, people in prison hate child abusers so either way, they will get a little of what is coming to them.
This poor girl is a survivor much like those who survived Auschwitz. Everything in life is downhill from here for her, and she’s going to be able to conquer anything that life throws at her. I can’t imagine once she was out from under the thumb of her torturers how she must have run to the nearest water faucet/sprinkler head/toilet and drank for about ten minutes to relieve her horrendous thirst. Wow! Real liquid! Extreme dehydration is a slow, lingering punishment, and one can literally go crazy in one’s desire for anything liquid.
The animals who held her should be treated to some fun from the golden age of torture – the Middle Ages. Start of small, wit the non-lethal stuff. That way you can stretch out the enjoyment longer. Red-hot needles dipped in sulfur inserted under the fingernails/toenails. Extract all their teeth with pliers, then hammer nails into the empty sockets, but not after you wrap some copper wire around the nails so you can run some electric current in for extra thrills. Then just pull their jaws off completely and cut their tongues off. Still all non-lethal. Get the picture? All the while you tell them that if they beg long and hard enough for their abominable treatment of these precious children, then maybe you’ll ease off. But you never do. You just make living, screaming turkeys out of them, alive and aware, until the bitter end.

They are both being held at San Joaquin County Jail on bail of nearly $1.2 million each.
Now why is it that if you imprison, starve and torture your own child for many years that you only have a bail amount of $4000 and are allowed to return home to await trial?
But if you imprison, starve and torture a child who is not your own then you have a bail amount of $1.2 million and are held in jail to await trial.
Does that make any sense? Shouldn’t people be held to the same standards of justice for torturing a child, no matter who the child is?
In fact, shouldn’t parents be held to higher standards than non-parents when they inflict pain and torture on their own child?

State Sen. Pam Roach, Auburn-R, called for additional penalties in the crimes of criminal mistreatment in the first and second degrees.
Roach, a member of the Sentencing Guidelines Commission, said she will present to that committee a proposal to increase penalties for abuse against children.
“It is absolutely outrageous that individuals who abuse their child every day for 1,000 days could only be charged with one count each of criminal mistreatment in the first and second degrees,” Roach said.
King County Prosecutor Dan Satterburg announced the filing of accusations against Jon Earl Pomeroy and Rebecca Arwen Long, each of whom was charged with one count each of first and second degree criminal mistreatment.
The Carnation couple accused of starving their 14-year-old daughter recently pleaded not guilty to those charges in King County Superior Court.
If convicted, Pomeroy and Long each face a maximum sentence of up to three years in prison. The couple were released from the King County Jail last month after each posted a $20,000 bond.
Roach said it is time to go even further.
“I have talked with the King County Prosecutor’s Office, and they assured me that there may be additional crimes charged and exceptional sentences sought,” Roach said.
“Abusing a child everyday for 1,000 days should not mean just one count of ANY of these crimes is charged,” said Roach. “Theoretically, there could be one count of criminal misconduct for each day this girl suffered.”
Roach holds others also accountable.
“This 47-pound, 14-year-old girl called for help over three years ago,” Roach said. “There certainly is negligence on the part of Child Protective Services. They did not take action when this girl asked for help.”
“This child begged to leave the home,” said Roach. “She wanted to be put into foster care. Instead, the department left her starving for three years while imprisoned with her tormenters.”
“In this state, when a teenager wants to leave the home, they have the right to do so,” Roach said. “Consequently, she was being unlawfully detained and tortured.”

I have big issues with people not fighting for their kids.
I am a former friend of Jon Pomeroy. My husband worked with the two of them ten years ago when we all lived in Utah. I babysat for those two kids while Jon took evening classes because his first wife left him for someone she met online. I remember thinking I was glad the kids had one normal parent. It breaks my heart to find all this out now because they were wonderful little kids. The girl was bright and imaginative. The boy was a late bloomer because he was neglected by his mother while she spent all day online and ignored the kids. I hope with all my heart those kids recover and thrive in new surroundings.
Who or what is keeping this extreem case so Hush-Hush?
I wrote to FOX, CNN and MSNBC but no reaction. This case, Jon Popmeroy and Rebecca Long should be exposed… PLEASE HELP TO EXPOSE! Maybe 20/20, etc?
Michael, this is far more than pathetic and sad. Both the bio parents, step parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, step family should all be exposed for what they are, all of them. They are all disgusting beyond human nature. I remain in somewhat of the loop-somewhat- and even the small snippits- gross, sick– it is all disgusting beyond what you can even imagine. Anyone would just vomit and vomit and vomit. I don’t know who or why with the adults — parents, bio parents, bio mom, stepmom, stepdad, dad, sisters, cousins, and all family, why they are “protected” with the press, but they are. But think about the KIDS. The thing is, open your heart to the children. Haven’t they been humilated and suffered enough without MSNBC? We tend to think that we are rightful with exposing and defending the children with what WE want and how we can do it. But put yourself in the place of the children. Have they not been through enough and just need a “normal” life now…out of the press, out of torture, away from pissing contests, away from further humiliation? MY God, what the parents and adults have already done to them!!! Why would they trust anyone? I don’t know, but if I put myself in their shoes, would I want national exposure, or would I just want to be able to be a kid, as best I can, during my “kid” years? Would I want my cherished childhood years to be bastardized further (as if it isn’t already destroyed by POS bio mom and Dad) by all this? I think, if it were me, I’d just want a “normal” Christmas, New Year’s, just (at least) this once. (God knows POS bio MOM and Dad and Step parents didn’t give a shit) Give the kids that. Thank God they are in Foster care. Michael, No adult disagrees with you, we’d like to FRY all of them, but put yourself in the shoes of the children. I know what you are going to say, and you are right….they should sue, should spit on natural mom, dad, step mom, stepdad, grandparents, aunts and uncles, sisters, cousins, the whole lot of them….but the whole lot of them aren’t worth it. None of are worth spit. They let this happen. They’ll get theirs with God and they are already catching the karma train. Don’t ask to make the kids more in the public eye. For them, enough is enough. For now. Let them have a lovely foster family, a real family this time around, let them be kids. If they want more later, it should be up to them, not the public.
I have a question for your Andrea. As far as you are aware, did the other relatives you mentioned, grandparents ect, know about the abuse? And if so, do you kow if they have aslo been charged?
They are all pathetic now playing the “blame game” and pointing fingers to stay out of trouble. Much of this crosses state lines, so Federal Court would have to be involved. In that event, knowing Fed court’s tie ups, it’ll never get there, not enough political push. No charges would be filed in other states, where the other’s exist, at this point, or probably ever. The kids will be over 18 by the time it could happen. I’d love to see the adults boil in oil. I wish them ALL prison, parents and step parents and the bloody lot of them. It is sick!!! They are still all pointing fingers at the others and no one taking resposibility. Those poor kids. It just breaks my heart. It would be awesome if Geraldo Rivera were on this and leave the kid’s hurt out of the story. Say what you will, but he’d get the truth. The truth seems to be damn dirtier than we know too. Damn dirty. Poor kids…..my heart aches for them.

Just read the Likens story you linked to, Michael, and it was horrific. I put the movie on my Netflix queue, but it looks like it will be hard to watch judging from the trailers I found.
I read this story a while back since I’m an avid reader of Crime Library’s articles. It made me sick to my stomach. BTW Michael, I’m also pissed off about the Caylee Anthony case. WAY pissed off!!! As a matter of fact, my sister and I and one of our friends even discussed a little road trip. *wink wink hahahahha Not that it would ever happen, but just talking about kicking Casey’s ass and then her mom’s kinda helped a little. hahahah.

I checked on the king county superior court web site and I was able to find Rebecca Longs case for domestic violence. You can’t access the actual documents but it shows you court dates with a brief discription of the matter at hand. It looks like right up through mid December they were dealing with a petition for an order of protection. As of the last post on this website relating to that it looks like the order of protection was issued / upheld and there is a future court date scheduled for this case on 01/06/09. Mabey that will be the date when things move forward. I know the courts are busy and that these things take some time but now that they have a order of protection for the children I don’t see why things would not move forward.

Scumbag got sentenced today. As far as I’m concerned, he should have recieved WAY more time. Our justice system is foul!
SEATTLE – A Carnation man was sentenced to 41 months in prison for his role in an extreme case of child abuse that included starving and withholding water from his young daughter for years.
The sentence against Jon E. Pomeroy was handed down Friday in King County Superior Court after he pleaded guilty Aug. 31 to one count of first-degree criminal mistreatment in the case.
Pomeroy’s daughter, now 15, and his son were in the courtroom as the sentence was pronounced, and watched their father being led away in handcuffs.
Prosecutors had asked for the maximum sentence of 41 months, and the judge granted it. Before his sentencing, Pomeroy read a tearful statement expressing remorse for his part in the abuse against his daughter.
“I wish there was … I would give anything to change what happened. I’m sorry,” he said, crying.
The detective handling the case said it was the worst case of child abuse he had ever seen in a 16-year career of investigating abuse and neglect.
Sheriff’s spokesman John Urquhart says the girl weighed only 48 pounds when rescued in August 2008, and had been given only little food and water for several years.
At Friday’s sentencing, Judge William Downing said, “She looked like a prisoner of war because she in fact was treated as a prisoner of war.”
Pomeroy and his wife, Rebecca Long, were arrested Oct. 10, 2008 – several weeks after deputies removed the then 14-year-old girl from their Carnation home.
The investigation began when Child Protective Services was called to the house on Aug. 13, 2008, after neighbors reported hearing screaming the night before.
Deputies interviewed the girl privately when her father told detectives she was the one screaming.
The girl told deputies her mother disciplined her by restricting her water intake, and was primarily given toast to eat. She said she hadn’t seen a doctor in several years.
Pomeroy is the girl’s biological father and Long was her stepmother.
She and her then 12-year-old brother were taken from the home and the girl was admitted to Children’s Hospital for treatment of severe malnutrition. She was in the hospital for two weeks.
During the investigation, investigators said they found the girl’s mother restricted her water intake to about half of a small Dixie cup per day. The mother only let the girl shower every two or three weeks, and watched her during each shower and bathroom break to keep the girl from surreptitiously drinking water.
“She looked more like she was 8 or 9 years old. Clearly very, very malnourished,” Urquhart said after the arrests. “All of her teeth had to be either pulled or capped.”
The girl and her brother were forced to sleep on the floor in the same room as their parents, and a heavy dresser was pushed in front of the door to keep her from sneaking out and getting water, Urquhart said.
The girl said the dresser was placed there after she was caught one night sneaking out of her own room to drink water from the toilet, so the stepmother wouldn’t hear water running from the bathroom faucet.
The girl told deputies that on one occasion, her mother duct-taped her hands behind her back and dunked her head in the toilet as a form of discipline.
According to case documents released last year, the girl was so depressed that she told social workers she would rather have a “lethal injection” than go back home to her father and stepmother.
Dwight Thompson, who is now the daughter’s foster parent, said the girl planned to read a letter she wrote in court Friday – but she couldn’t go through with it.
“It was pretty tough. It was pretty tough,” he said. “But she was strong. You know a lot of kids couldn’t have even done what she did.”
The girl reported the abuse at her school in 2005, but nobody followed up on her cry for help.
Pomeroy offered no explanation in court as to why he allowed the abuse to go on for years.
Thompson told KOMO News that both children are now doing remarkably well, and they’ve totally recovered physically.
He also said the daughter is so bright and articulate she can do anything she wants, and that she’s talking about being a lawyer or scientist.
