Meet Mr. and Mrs. Phillips.
She’s 27-year-old Tiara Dawn. He’s 31-year-old Jerry Edward. Not pictured in the family photo is their 9-year-old son. He’s not in the picture because he and his three siblings, ages 8, 3, and 1 year are no longer in the company of Mum and Dad but have been turned over to their grandparents.
It would appear that Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were not the type to tolerate their youngster getting into mischief. He threw rocks at a bus, you see, the sort of thing that must not go unpunished. So they grounded him and they lectured him on the importance of respecting the property of others.
No! I’m lying. What they really did was to make him stand with his arms outstretched, holding a can of food in each hand. If he lowered his arms, he got some positive reinforcement in the form of a belt across his back.
Later, to make sure the lesson was thoroughly driven home, they put tacks in his shoes.
He tried to walk on tiptoe so the tacks wouldn’t puncture the soles of his feet. The 100 or so tiny puncture wounds found by investigators indicate he didn’t have such good luck with that.
A little before 10pm on Thursday, October 16, the 9-year-old decided to make his move. He fled his home barefoot and ran to the nearby Upstate Body Shop. The shop would normally have been closed, but employees have been moving equipment at night. One of those employees was in his vehicle when a kid ran up, tapped on the glass, and asked for a ride to Wal-Mart. The body shop employee was cautious, and asked the boy if he was meeting someone there. In the end, the story of torture came out and the shop employee called police, then hid the 9-year-old in a car until police arrived.
When asked about the “punishment”, Tiara Dawn Phillips said:
That was a stupid thing to do.
Praise God for the repentant.
Detective Billy Odom described the kid as “intelligent” and, although not a child psychologist, he judged that the boy was doing pretty well. He added:
His injuries are quite extreme. I would compare them to POW extreme.
Physically, his back, shoulders, and arms are covered in bruises. And there’s the human-pincushion problem with his feet. That the kid’s psyche is in one piece is a blue-eyed miracle.
The boy’s statements and the evidence indicated “violent and extreme punishment”, including beatings with a belt studded with tacks. A neighbor claims:
The kids used to come to my house not one day, but every day, wanting something to eat.
Mum and Dad are basking in striped sunshine until one or both can figure out how to come up with the $50,000 bail (each) that the judge assigned. Even if they come up with the money, their release is conditional on counseling—which they’ll have to undergo before they can see any of their four kids without supervision. If convicted, they face up to 10 years in prison.
And to top it all off, Tiara Dawn Phillips is 8 months pregnant with another little punching bag.

I have kids. Five of them. Its hard work.
You get those days when they are cheeky and back answer. ( especially now with the two oldest boys moving into their teen years.)
Sometimes they make bad choice’s. As a general rule tho they are good kids.
In the 12 years i have been a parent, never have i resorted to tourture or violence to discipline my children.
What is hurting them going to do? Is it going to teach them anything other than that mum and dad are assholes? It sure as hell isnt going to win their respect.
I discipline my children. Discipline to me is teaching them something, helping them learn through their mistakes.( and being kids, they WILL make mistakes- Im an adult and i still make mistakes.)
Tiara and Jerry are sorry excuses for parents, and they need some extra special punishment…Danger, Turtle, Mulch, Miwist???? Ill leave the methods up to you guys, as you are so good at what you do.

I have a daughter that just turned 12. She is starting to find out who she is. Music, clothes, friends the whole deal. We have some difference of opinions sometimes. B U T I have never hit her. I have always loved her. Choosing to talk and find out the reasons behind a problem rather than welping the crap out of her.

Take him back to the room and strap him down again. Remove his teeth with old rusty pliars. Force him to drink his own urine. Make sure he knows what he is drinking.
On both make small shallow incesions all over their bodies. Salt water showers are the order of the day.

The Department of Social Services has been called to the residence previously and it looks like Pa might have a bit of a history of ” Criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature ” Like that was a big shock.
Unfortuantely, esp if one is not Catholic, there are only 2 destinations – Heaven and Hell, such that the real question is “Is one Heaven worthy?” Thus those who aren’t “Heaven worthy” are hell bound, not the other way around.
Thus I feel that these POS are more than likely hell bound simply because I do not think at this point God wants to be with such for all eternity should they not change their ways.

But I DO believe in the Biblical Proverb “Spare the rod and spoil the child”.
However, I can say that both my girls have had less spankings then I have fingers to count them on…
The thing is ( and i have explained this before on another post) that the “rod” in bible times was a crook used for shepherding. Now if every time a sheep strayed away from the flock the shepherd took his rod and started to beat the shit out of the sheep, he would soon be out of a job due to the amount of injured and dead sheep on his watch. And rightly so.
The rod was used to gently prod and guide the sheep back to where they were supposed to be and keep them under the watchful eye of the shephrd.
After saying this, i have to agree, in the right context it is wrong to “spare the rod.”
We need to gently guide and sometimes give a nudge or prod to get our kids to head in the right direction in life. Beating the shit out of them will achieve nothing.
Penny, can you describe “good ass whipping”. I would like to get an understanding of how you can consider this discipline. Wouldn’t it rather be more of a selfish way for you to react to how irritated you are at the moment? Feel me on that one? More about you, less about them…If that’s the case why don’t we just have the police give us “good ass whippings” rather then tickets. We would learn from our mistakes and save money. Its true though, when a trainer trains an elephant he rewards good behaviour (by clicking a small device when the elephant does the right thing) and doing nothing when the elephant does the wrong thing.

My neighboor never whips her kids, but the yelling comming from that house is horrid. Kids aren’t as complex as we try to make them. Instead this kid knew when he stepped on it, he would have to either step on it gain or he would have to do without whatever it was that he was trying to walk to. If his parents called him, imagine the choice he had:

Okay, I think that instead of 10 years being the maximum time they could spend in jail, it should be the minimum. Also, there should never be the possibility of unsupervised visits with their children no matter HOW much counseling they receive. No way. And I certainly hope that the minute the new baby is born that s/he is removed from mother never to be seen by birth parents again.

Thumb tacks? That’s original,WTF?! A thumb tack in the foot is by far the worst pain ever. I broke my wrist once, snapped, totally fractured, still not as bad as a fucking thumb tack in the foot! What sucks is you have to pull it out too! For this kid hundreds of times. :o( Sentencing for these types of crimes do not serve justice at all. Too bad they can’t throw away the key.

I have to disagree Turtle. If you’re referring to disciplining boys and girls; as girls are easier. My daughter is by far harder to get straight than my son is. They’re both teenagers; 21 months apart. My daughter rebels a lot and talks back more than my son does. When I get after my son, he just gets this look on his face and retracts to his room, almost never talking back but making that loud ‘growl’ noise to show that he’s pissed. My daughter on the other hand, will fight me all the way.

I have an easy way to keep my girls in line, all 3 of them…
I take the time to play with them, I let them fall asleep on me, their 2, 5 & 6… I take the time to talk with them… I let them help me with things… I laugh with them… I kiss their boo boos… I sing the song ‘I am Tickle Man” to the tune of “Iron Man”….
This means when I give that look they recognize it’s serious… They know when I say no I’m serious… They know if they get punished that it’s for a real reason… That’s how this Dad keeps his girls in line and happy…
(Notice, I don’t have to beat them, hold them under water, put tacks in their shoes, burn them with irons, limit their water or food intake, use buckets for toilets, stuff them in microwaves or dryers and I definitely do not try to shoot, kill, kick, punch, bite or do any of the other disgusting things we see these POS’s do to kids.) Basically, I love them unconditionally and they know it.
Girls are WAY easier to deal with. My daughter is 13 and she is an angel. Well, most of the time anyway. She does get a little attitude every once in a while. She’s a teenager, what do I expect? hahahah. But all I have to do with her is say her name sternly and she calms down. There have been times when she has pouted for a whole day after getting reprimanded but it doesn’t usually last that long. The boys, well, I learned a neat trick with them: I cry. hahahahah. It works every time!!!!!!
To clear things up, my bark tends to be much louder than my bite. There is a clear distinction between harming your children, and grabbing them up and swatting their bottoms a few times to get them to straighten up. I don’t beat my kids, and do not use spanking for every discipline problem. In fact a good healthy dose of extra chores seems to do the trick, as well as contributes to our clean house. I love my kids and don’t like to spank them, but when their cranky and fight sleeping, a swift spat on the but puts them to sleep every time.
On another note I don’t believe people should give people a hard time for spanking. I understand abuse, but spanking your child is not abuse. To he people that come here and say they never spank their children, good for you ! I am glad that you are able to control your kids mentally into never doing anything wrong. Makes for healthy adults!
I’m with you, Penny. Spanking is NOT abuse. I hate when people see someone spanking their kids in Wal-Mart or somewhere and turn them in for abuse. When I took all 4 of my kids shopping, at least one of them was bound to get a spanking. I dared anybody to say a word to me when one of my kids was throwing a fit in the store and got popped on the butt. One thing I can NOT stand is to be in a store and see a child throwing a fit and falling on the floor and whatever because mommy won’t let him/her have whatever he/she wants. It’s ridiculous. All that being said, I do NOT condone child abuse. I think it’s a horrible thing to do to a poor child. But most kids need a good swat every now and then.

I have to be honest. I have 3 boys and one girl. I sure did spank those boys, let me tell you. My daughter, not so much. Not because she’s a girl, but because she just hardly ever needed spanking. Boys are a totally different story. Every time I turned around they were doing something crazy like trying to beat each other up and just causing me a LOT of headaches. hahahah. Then they got bigger than me so I threatened, and I do mean threatened, them with a broom handle, flyswatter and other such nonsense. Mostly they just laughed at their little old mom coming after them with a flimsy little flyswatter. hahahah. Picture it, it’s funny as hell. BUT I never, EVER beat them. Or put tacks in their shoes. I threw rocks, well, pebbles at them when they ran from me but only because I was not about to go running down the street after them. We had fun when they were growing up, mostly because they thought I was hilarious when I was mad. hahahha. You just do NOT treat children like livestock. I hate reading about shit like this because people who do these kinds of things don’t need to reproduce. They need to be locked up for the rest of their lives so they can’t hurt their babies any more. Oh, by the way, my boys love me to death even though I spanked them. They are also very good boys. Well, young men. I did a great job without hurting them. That’s the way it should be. AND my daughter is an angel.

This story stopped me cold. I had the same thing done to me. Without the thumbtacks. If my arms lowered I was whipped with the buckle end or worse. I had to stand on tiptoe the whole tome morning to bedtime. If my heels touched the ground I got the same. Her boyfriend would just watch, laugh, drink and smoke “killerweed” all day.

I also knew Eddie (Jerry) years ago, and they need to build a place under hell for him. Hell is too nice for him. People don’t even know half of what he has done and what is in his sick, twisted head.
He made life hell for me, my husband, my daughter, my sister-n-law, and her 3 kids. He tried to control our lives for about 2 years for me and 5 years for my sister-n-law.
We moved away in the middle of the night to get away, much like the poor child running away. And my sister-n-law barely got away alive.

I never knew Jerry or Tiara, but I did know 3 of the 4 (well now 5) kids. I worked at a shelter and they were in our care for a few months. I just want to give everyone a brief update on the children. I remember when I first met the kids.
The child who went through the abuse that called for the arrest of his parents was extremely quiet, distant, and trusted no one. However, this was just first impression. Considering what had happened, I would be resistant to adults as well. After a while, the child blossomed and was a joy to have at the shelter. He’s very artistic and loves yugioh and pokemon cards. He also enjoyed skating and rock music. The child is now living with a relative outside of the area and is doing very well.
My biggest concern wasn’t the child in question, but the middle-aged child of the group. I don’t know the full story of what went on at their home, but she definitely had some major issues. The oldest (who actually went through the punishment) was just quiet, distant, and didn’t trust adults. She would go through fits of screaming, lashing out at our employees, cursing like a sailor, and level of defiance that isn’t normal for a toddler. She was a sweet child, but she really did test our patience at times. She is in a good home now with a patient, loving family. From what I’m told, she is doing very well. I pray that she continues to do well with one-on-one attention.
The youngest one had my heart. I wanted to take that little girl home. They were all sweet and I loved all three of them to bits, but she had the sweetest little face, and when she spoke you couldn’t help but smile. She was very emotional and shared some of the defiance issues her sister had (though not as bad). She is also in a loving home and is doing well.
I think its a shame the mother only got 90 days and 3 years probation. However, I know God will grant the parents the ultimate punishment…I hope there’s plenty of fire and tacks for them where those two are going.
well, I’ll up date you guys on Mr.Phillips (the 350 lbs. kurt cobain wanna be). I know him and tiara very well,and I am not surprised at what they did. I used to practice bass in a band with jerry( if you wanna call it that) LOL and even then I saw potential for abuse with the oldest child. I saw how jerry controlled tiara and how she would do anything he told her to.Jerry is a piece of trash and deserves punishment way worse than any mentioned on here. I know how he treated the first family he had and like she said, it was a grace of GOD that she and her 3 kids escaped alive. Anyway I could go all day writing about the EVIL shit he has done to everyone he has ever known, but I don’t want to waste anymore of my time thinking about him. He got 10 years suspended to 7 years imprisonment, not bad enough if you ask me. well, my last words to Jerry Eddie Phillips is “Don’t drop the soap”.
