Murder charges against Detroit boy’s parents dismissed

DETROIT – A judge has dismissed murder and some child abuse charges that were brought against the parents of a 2-year-old Detroit boy whose charred remains were found in a basement ceiling.
District Judge Donald Coleman ruled Wednesday there wasn’t enough evidence presented by prosecutors to order 28-year-old Joseph Miller and 23-year-old Nickella Reid to stand trial in Deuntay Miller’s death.
But Coleman ruled they should stand trial on other child abuse charges that stem from the scalding of another son and welfare fraud. The scalding led authorities last year to discover Deuntay’s death.
The prosecutor’s office claims Deuntay’s body was burned and the remains hidden while the family collected state assistance.
The parents said Deuntay died of natural causes.

After Nicki had taken her one-year-old son to the hospital with scalding burns over a third of his body, along with other signs of abuse, she was arrested and charged with felony child abuse. The police went to Nickella’s apartment to arrest her boyfriend Joseph Miller, and in the course of a search for evidence, found the burned body of a baby wrapped in a plastic bag hidden in the attic ceiling. Charges of 1st Degree Murder were immediately added to the original charges of 1st & 2nd Degree Child Abuse.
Unfortunately, The body of dead baby, who turned out to be Joe & Nikki’s little son Deante Miller, was too degraded for the Medical Examiner to determine an exact cause of death, forcing Judge Donald Coleman to make his ruling against the prosecution.
Nickella and Joseph are still being held on the original Child Abuse charges concerning the young child Nikki brought to the hospital, on bonds of $750,000 and $500,000 respectively. Both are facing long prison tems.

I developed a strong idea of what was right and what was wrong. I knew I had to change, and change drastically. And over the years, I’m proud to say I did. Do I have the perfect attitude about minorities and gay people? Hell, I don’t know. but I know this much, if I was with a group of white people, & somebody told a racial joke say 5 years ago, I’d probably smile, but I would dare say anything negative. DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit couple accused of trying to cremate their slain 2-year-old son on a barbecue grill and then collecting his welfare benefits have pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors.
Twenty-eight-year-old Joseph Miller pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder and 23-year-old Nickella Reid pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and welfare fraud. Police found the remains of 2-year-old Deuntay Miller while investigating the 2007 scalding of the couple’s 1-year-old son, Nicholas.
Reid faces up to 15 years in prison at her April 7 sentencing. Miller faces up to 50 years at his April 16 sentencing. Before the plea deal he had been charged with first-degree murder and if convicted would have faced life with no possibility of parole.
Oh man.. I hope some justice is done in this case.. seriously.. They kill their baby, and continue to collect money meant to take care of him?? I hope they never see the light of day ever again..

The gruesome twosome was sentenced Friday in Detroit.
After pleading guilty last month, Nikella, was sentenced to 10-15 years in prison for the charges of involuntary manslaughter and welfare fraud. She also plead guilty to a child abuse charge on the child whos burns originally opened the investigation into the semi-cremated one. There has yet to be a sentence handed down on those charges.
Joseph plead guilty to a 2nd degree murder charge and was sentenced to 22-50 years.
They may not be first degree murder charges folks, but at least they will be behind bars and not out procreating the menu for their next backyard BBQ.
Deuntay finally has justice. May he rest in peace and may they burn for what they have done.
