Carlos Beltran and Mila Petrov
Any parent will tell you that raising children has its challenges. They tell lies sometimes, they touch your 
things and they generally run around and make noise.
Hey, that’s kids for you.
Well, 5 year old Melanie Beltran did all of those things and sometimes it got to be too much for her parents to handle (Even Mum and Dad need a time out sometime). So, as any loving parents would, her mother and father thought it was best to take Melanie aside and talk to her about appropriate behavior and time out. This worked a treat and they all lived happily ever after…..right?
Wrong.
Rather than use the usual methods of discipline, Mila Petrov, 29 and Carlos Beltran, abused Melanie in what was described as, “the worst case of child abuse they had ever seen,” by the Doctors who treated her.
Little Melanie never really knew anything other than pain. In the last three years of her life she was routinely tied up, struck, burned with cigarettes, forced to eat hot peppers and made to drink from the toilet. She was also scalded and sustained second and third degree burns. Her entire back- shoulder to shoulder, neck to waist- had been burned….from hot grease or oil.
The night before Melanie died, on the 13th of March 2007, she had, according to her mother, been 
misbehaving and so she was made to stand at the foot of Petrov’s bed and face the wall, while pregnant Petrov took a nap.
She woke up to find Melanie ill. She had vomited and soiled one of her mother’s towels. Petrov reacted by hitting the child in the back of the head and slamming her face up against the bedroom wall. She then dragged the crying Melanie into the living room where she was forced to swallow Tabasco sauce. The beating then continued with Melanie being punched in the face and the stomach until she finally stopped breathing and fell unconscious.
Instead of dialing 911, Petrov thought it was best to phone her husband at work to discuss who should call emergency services. Finally after much debating Carlos agreed to come home.
Once home, while Melanie lay on the floor dying, they ordered their other six children, aged 10 and under, to clean up the house. The police were coming and they didn’t want to make a bad impression.
Finally they rang emergency services who arrived to find Petrov kneeling beside her unconscious daughter claiming; “I have done all I can.” She then pointed at another of her daughters and said, “She did this.”
Class act this mother.
Despite the Doctors best efforts, Melanie succumbed to her injuries the next day, March 14th 2007. The autopsy that was carried out showed signs of physical abuse, including blunt force trauma to the head, two black eyes, a broken nose, burns to her body from a hot liquid, bruises and strap marks on her stomach and bruises on her bottom. She had no stomach fat, the result of not being fed regularly. At some point her legs had been tied together to keep her from running around.
Petrov has admitted that she often tied Melanie up and forced her to stay in a closet, whenever the family had to go out somewhere. She also admits that Melanie was the child she took all her frustration and aggression out on.
The other children were removed from the home and placed with relatives. During an interview one child said, “There are secrets in the house…we don’t tell.”
Petrov and Beltran regularly encouraged the other children to hit and kick Melanie if she touched their belongings or annoyed them in any way.
Petrov and Beltran have been charged with first degree murder in the death of their daughter and face the death sentence.
Judge Earl Hoffenberg ordered no contact between the parents and the other children, including a new born who Petrov gave birth to on the same day that Melanie died. They have both pleaded not guilty.

It seems to be a common phenomenon in these stories that the parents will pick on ONE child out of many—-directing their abuse towards that ONE child while raising the other ones “normally.” Does anybody know WHY that is….is there a psychological name for it other than sick, twisted etc…
Abusers choose their victims. I don’t know why. I do know that Melanie’s brothers and sisters stayed in line because they knew what might happen.
I don’t believe any abuser is ‘out-of-control’ – what they do is deliberate. They chose to name call, hit, boil water, tie up, whatever – to keep their victims under control – and in this case, keep others under control. Melanie was used as an example to the others of what might happen.
The psychological name is sociopath or psychopath – do some reading on psychopaths. You’ll be a bit surprised to find they aren’t what we generally think of what a psychopath is. They know what they are doing, they understand the consequences – and they live next door, they shop with us, they coach our children, they are our coworkers.

Abusers DEFINITELY choose their victims. If they were out of control, they would attack coworkers, people on the street, police officers, etc. But they don’t. They only attack those that they choose, that they feel can have control or ownership of.
An excellent book on the subject is “The Sociopath Next Door” by Martha Stout.
Not every case is the same.
One woman i have worked with had a son who is ADD. When he is good he is the sweetest, most loving, generous child.
When he is bad , he is horrendous. He gets jealous of his younger brothers and one day told his mother,” i promise you mum. One day when your not looking, im going to kill them. I may slit their throats or drown them in the bath. Maybe ill push them in front of a moving car…but ill do it, and then ill be happy.”( i remember this word for word, because as i was taking notes while talking to her i got shivers down my spine and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.)
His mum just totally lost it and flew at him and gave him a hiding. ( she also put him into therapy which is how i came to know them.)
The worse his threats got over the weeks, the worse the beltings she gave him got.
Eventually, he was removed from the family home. As he should have been.
I am in no way saying that he deserved what he got, or sympathise with the mother in any way. When their are problems in the family unit, abuse is never the answer. I am simply trying to show that not all child abusers are Sociopaths. Not all actively choose a victim.
Sounds like Melanie may have been or tried to be the happiest child, while the others stayed miserably quiet.
I don’t care of the husband and POSSIBLE father had a job, I am sure that the large number of kids helped on the taxes and I am sure that if Obama gives out “stimulus” checks with any frequency and with the same rules, we will be seeing more babies being made just for the next stimulus check arrival.
Before being sent to hell, these people need “victim sympathy therapy” – come buy my house and I’ll gladly warm up some olive oil and I’ll pour it in them when I finish making fried eggplant. It’s a shame to see that hot oil go to waste when such POS could use it!
My form of justice also has many benefits for the Earth
1. Reduce – 1 less couple making babies for whatever reason
2. Reuse – The oil would have 2 uses not just 1 and global warming would be reduced because it would cool while rolling down their fat asses
3. Recycle – put their carcasses in a garden somewhere.

Wow, it bothers you that much Yo? I didn’t realize it could bug people that much. Sometime these article get to me, and it makes me feel a little better to share how I’m feeling. I didn’t think anyone would mind, but I can pull that stuff – you’re not the first person to complain about things like that, and I’m trying to keep as many people content as possible.
I’m not understanding what the big deal is with the editors showing emotion during the article or whatever. I can’t see how it affects certain readers so much.
Yeah but some of the readers are reserved with their emotions. Sometimes I look at it like they don’t want to mix their peas with their mash potatoes. You’d think, “Oh hell, it’s all going down the same place.”
But some don’t see it that way. And some are used to the way things were.

I prefer more facts, less emotion. That away you don’t lead the readers with emotion instead of letting the facts start up the discussion. Writing the stories is hard either way I am sure. I would never be able to devote such time to something that hurts so bad.
I appreciate all the support I’ve been getting since I took over the day to day duties here ant PYSIH, and it has been a labor of love since the first day. Being Editor, I can understand why some people object to my emotional approach to certain stories that affect me more than others. I’m trying not to let it happen, but sometimes I confess my feelings get the best of me. In certain cases I believe that the appropriate thing to do would be is to express some of what I’m feeling in my story, but I think those cases should be very rare. In just about every other story my emotional response will be saved for the comments section, It’s just one more compromise I feel I need to make for the sake of our website.
I guess I don’t think emotion is innappropriate. One thing I like about this site is that it’s not dispassionate – I enjoy the rage, sarcasm, jokes, hate, love, sorrow, all of it – people here are real – even the editors.
No compromising, please and thank-you.
Oh I didn’t say I was gonna stop being emo Miwist, just that I’m going to be a little bit more selective about when I do it. As for my writers, they can make the decision for themselves. Personally I like what everyone is doing at the moment and suggest that they don’t change a thing. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is a very wise statement. I think the secret is find balance.
Not only do we have a new editor and new people writing stories, but we have a lot of new people leaving comments, and a lot of those are becoming regulars.
I think its fantasic considering a month ago there was talk of PYSIH shutting down totally.
I guess there will always be some that knock what we do here, but i think the renewed interest that the latest stories has generated speaks volumes.

Mila Petrov, 32, sat with her head in her hands as photos of her daughter’s scarred body were shown in the Skokie courtroom. She cried at times as Cook County Medical Examiner Nancy Jones described burns, bruises, and marks from being tied up.
“I just wanted to tell you that I’m really sorry,” Petrov told Cook County Circuit Judge Garritt Howard. “I know that God forgives me.”
“You turned out to be her torturer and the person who caused her death,” the judge told Petrov.
Authorities charged Petrov with first-degree murder after her daughter, Melanie Beltran, died in March 2007 in Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Prosecutors said the girl suffered years of beatings and cruel punishments. The last beating was March 13, 2007, after Petrov became angry because Melanie had vomited, prosecutors said. She died from severe blows to the head, Jones said.
Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of more than 60 years. But Jim Mullenix, a public defender, argued that Petrov’s behavior was a remnant of her childhood.
Petrov, who pleaded guilty last month, had been a scapegoat of her family, and the victim of assault growing up, Mullenix said.
But Petrov’s father, Grile Petrov, said in an interview after the hearing that his daughter suffered from mental problems.
The father left the courthouse before he could be asked about the allegations of abuse. The defendant’s mother declined comment.
In June, Melanie’s father, Carlos Beltran, 34, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery of a child and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Or Milas sister who was only 18 years old and was found dead two days later while her parents left her to go on a “vacation” (to steal) KNOWIN. That their daughter was on her death bed and still went to steal! Came back and found her dead at home all alone two days later!!!! I hope this entire family torts in hell!!!!!
Though I agree with your angst towards these slimeballs, I don’t agree with them being referred to as Gypsies because of their disgusting behaviours. I have found out in the last few years that most of my family descended from Bohemia. They were very Nomadic, which is a very Gypsy lifestyle. I think comparing these scums to Gypsies because they steal and kill is like saying African Americans are Thugs by stereotype or Italians are all mobsters. I thought my “Gypsy” lineage was cool :( Oh well. I suppose I still have my 1/4 German, lol.
