Joseph Edward Duncan III
This devilishly handsome guy is Joseph Edward Duncan III. Proper name for a stand-up guy, right? Errr. . .well 
maybe not so much. You see, this charming 45-year-old sex offender gained notoriety in the past few years for putting the maniac in maniacal. Allow me to elaborate. . .
On May 16, 2005 the bodies of 40 year-old Brenda Groene, her 37-year-old boyfriend Mark McKenzie, and her 13 year-old son Slade were found in her Coeur D’Alene, Idaho home. They were bound and had all died from blunt force trauma to the head. Missing were her 9 year-old son Dylan Groene and his 7 year-old sister Shasta.
Shasta was found six weeks later in early July when employees at a Denny’s restaurant that the girl and her captor were dining at became suspicious. She was returned to her biological father, and Mr. Duncan was taken into police custody. The case investigators released information at that time that they believed that the 
older of the two children, Dylan, was deceased.
What’s that you say about repeat sex offenders? Oh, they very rarely reoffend after they’ve been “rehabilitated”, right? I mean, right???
Unfortunately, I don’t hear of many cases when one of these “repeat sexual offenders” are ever rehabilitated.
Mr. Duncan was first arrested and imprisoned in Washington in 1980 after kidnapping and raping a 14 year-old boy at gunpoint. He spent 14 of his 20 year sentence in prison, was paroled and then sent back to prison in 1997 for a parole violation. He was released free and clear in 2000, but didn’t register as a sex offender (of course!) and 
instead picked up and moved to N Dakota and beyond. At the time of his arrest for Shasta’s kidnapping, he had an outstanding warrant for allegedly molesting a 7 year-old boy in July of 2004 in Minnesota.
According to some of Duncan’s own writings on his website which can be found (here – http://fifthnail.blogspot.com/), he even deluded himself into thinking that he would not reoffend. Unfortunately for Shasta and her family, that was all a charade and he was really just a sick, evil, perverted psychopathic loose cannon ready to pop off to the most extreme degree.
As if murder and raping young children wasn’t enough, Duncan also made a videotape of himself with the two Groene children.
During Duncan’s trial in August of this year, he objected to a particularly graphic video that showed him torturing and raping Dylan Groene. He is reported as saying, “This will make the jury my victims and then I will not be tried by a jury of my peers, but a jury of my victims.” The judge denied his request.
Physicians and therapists have reported that Shasta is doing well despite her ordeal. It should be noted that 
during the six weeks of her captivity, Duncan repeatedly raped and tortured hers and her older brother. She was also a witness to Dylan’s murder. He was accidently shot in the stomach so that his guts were “hanging out” and then in the head after Duncan told her his life could not be saved. How compassionate of him!
If there is a Hell, I hope to God that this guy Duncan gets sent there. And I mean tied to a stick and continuously spun and roasted on a raging open fire like a stuck pig.
Thankfully, Joseph Duncan III was sentenced to death in federal court on August 27, 2008. As a side note, he is also believed to be the perpetrator in the kidnapping and murder of 10 year-old Anthony Martinez in 1997. That’s right, 1997, 3 years after Duncan was first paroled. Gotta love the American justice system!

Another great story! OMG! I may sound shallow but he LOOKS like a sex offender! That picture gives me the creeps! I am soo tired of these bastards getting chance after chance! I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A COMPLETLY REHABILITATED SEX OFFENDER! IT DOESN’T HAPPEN! I say first offense life-no parole. I’ve got two babies that I gotta bring up in this country and im tired of REPEAT sex offenders just doing what they want until they realize “dead kids don’t talk” That poor girl…. I hope she is getting alot of therapy. She is really gonna need it thanks to this POS!

Why was he not closely monitered? Wouldnt it be a red flag to the police that he didnt register as a sex offender? As soon as he failed to do so, a warrent for his arrest should have been issued.

This guy is a demon from hell. It has bothered me to see that some of you don’t beleive in Hell. I don’t want to start a religious discussion, but there is no way that these sick fucks like Joseph Duncan are chemically made the same as you and I. I know that my body is not physically capable of doing anything this awful. I agree with you Bob Saget, one bullet through the head and get it over with. Look at those childrens faces and and tell me you don’t beleive in the death penalty. Those could have been anyone of our children. The only way to stop pure evil is zero tolerance. You have a video, for God’s sake, no trial needed.
I remember when this story first came to light, I prayed for Shasta to be at peace. How do other people that don’t believe in God deal with such things, do you just say “she’s fucked, not thing can help her now”? I am not trying to convince anyone to believe how I do, but I can’t understand how you possibly can deal with this world with no one to look to for help but our justice system. Please help me to understand!

Can you imagine how ‘well’ Shasta is doing after all that she endured, all that she witnessed??? She has many years of therapy in her future, the poor child.
Sadly, even though this SCUM was found guilty and sentenced to death, which he so richly and rightly deserves, he gets an automatic APPEAL. Anytime a defendant is convicted under a death penalty, he gets an automatic appeal to a higher court to ensure HIS RIGHTS weren’t violated under the lower court. And who pays for the lengthy and costly appeals process on both sides? The taxpayers do.
Penny, I’d like to know what hell is to you. Is it a Biblical hell? I don’t really believe in heaven or hell; however, *if* there is a hell, I rather think that each person has his own individual hell.
I think heaven and hell are are simular to dreaming. When you die, and you are evil, your mind will be in an evil tortureous state, if you are a decent person, your mind will continue in a pleasent happy state. That is the simplified version of my thoughts, I hope you can understand my point. It is hard for me to put into words. Plus my spelling is horrific!

Thanks for posting this. I had suggested this as a story a few weeks back when various people started to contribute stories. When I read stories like this one and the one of the three young men who tortured 21 people to death it affirms my believe in the existence of demonic forces. This kind of evil goes beyond what humanity is capable of.
I also want to say kudos to the Denny’s staff who recognized Shasta and actually got involved and helped to save her life.
When will this society learn that child sex predators cannot be reformed–even when castrated they still have the desire to fondle children. They need to be put on a penal colony and live only among themselves. Perhaps we could use the state of Alaska for this purpose!

About once a month, I go on the sexual predetor web site and skim through the pics of registered sex offenders in my area. I live in a small town on the outskirts of a major one. We have a few local stores that everyone including the local celebs frequent. (Dollar Generel & Family Dollar) Since I have started getting familiar with their faces, I have been able to recognize their faces when I see them in these local gathering spots. Not only do I check out the pics, but I show the pics to my children as well. This is only one of the methods I use to keep my children safe. I know that all pedos haven’t been caught, but it is a way of arming your self. Knowledge! I also, go over with them what to do if someone where to try and grab them. I tell them that fighting back in the beginning is their best chance of survival. They know the pain they may feel from the initial confrontation will be far less than that if they do be come abducted. If you are not already talking to your kids about this, please do. The poor family in this story didn’t seem to have a chance from the very beginning, but lets make it harder for these pedos if we can.
If anyone else has any other ways of arming their family, please share, I’d love the input. We have to start working together to save our kids!
Kathy- good point about Denn’ys! We tend to only care about our own lives, but think of the outcome had this Denny’s employee not cocerned herself with “someone elses problem”.
Unfortunately we dont have a sex offender register that is available to the public here in Western Australia. I wish we did, becuse if i knew of any sexual predators in my town, i would certainly be telling my children who they are, as well as anyone else i know who has children.
The more aware people are of these child abusers, the more visual they are, the less they can move. They need a veil of secrecy to operate.
From a very young age i started teaching my children about appropriate and inappropriate touching ( as most parents do.)
They have all started martial arts at a young age, because i want them to fight and yell as much as they can if anyone ever tried anything. You need to try to ensure your kids are very confident in themselves, because pedo’s tend to target kids who are less likely to fight back, or tell what has happened.
It needs to out there more. Self protective behaviours should be taught in schools.
Know your children. Know their friends and the parents of their friends. Be careful who you let your children spend time with. Moniter their internet use. I know that to most parent this is what they do already. But there are those that dont and their children are at risk.
We as parents need to be open with our children. Talk about the subject openly, dont let it be a taboo subject.
ANd yeah, be aware. Not just for your own kids, but for others too. Act on your suspicions. Even if they turn out to be wrong, its better to be safe that sorry.
You sound like a good parent Amy, do you think that the problems are as abundent in Australia as it is here in the States? I live right out side of Houston(Texas), and in my little city we have 25 registered. I started looking at their places of employment, and plan to start a campain with other parents to contact these employers to inform them that we are aware of their hiring a pedo and would boycott their buisness if they continued to employ them. I am first concentrating on real pedos, not 18 and 19 year olds dating 14 year olds. That information of the victim is listed. Maybe if it gets around, these pedos will have no where to go and the gov will have to find some place else for them to go. I am just tired of talking about issues and not doing anything about it, this is some thing easy and effective I hope! We’ll see!
Well, obviously the United Stated is a bigger country than Australia and the populaion is greater, so you guys, on ratio probably do have more sexual predators. But they are rife obver here too.
I have a friend who works for the WA parole board, and she specifically worls with sex offenders. SHe has worked her ass off over the years to have more checks in place for after the release of sex offenders and to give the victims more rights. But there needs to be more done.
My ex raped me and he did eight and a half years for the crime. WHile in jail he went up for parole many times but was refused each time due to his refusal to do the sex offender rehab program. I always thought it was compulsary to do it if you were an offender, but apparently not.
He is now a registered sex offender and they have been fairly vigilant in keeping his whereabouts up to date.
I wish our sex offender register was available to the public. It should be. How do we protect our children if we dont know who is who?
I think your idea to campaign is a good one.
I know there will be those who say you are encroaching on their rights and that they have done their time and should therefore be allowed a place in society. My reply to those poeple is BULLSHIT!!!
If they have raped/molested a child, they have lost all rights. They are no longer ‘human’ in my eyes, therefore they dont deserve basic human rights.
I say , go for it, and keep us posted as to how your going with it. Being pro active is better than sitting on our bums waiting for someone else to fix the problem.
Penny- that is a great idea! I used to feel a little more secure because my hubs is in the air force and we live on bases. However repeated exposure to this site has broken that down:). My kids are a little young to explain that to them now but I will start looking up S.O.’s in our areas and around us!

Having studied psychology (I took a few classes in college), I can see how these POS can be so self righteous and still be “honest”.
People, like me, who believe in God or higher power as such, are “Level 4″ on the maturity / intellectual scale. This bastard is definitely “Level 5″ – someone who has reached a point where they have reached a level where they can self guide themselves thru life without any authority. I am sure that I know and deal with many level 5’s, but the real problem is when said level 5 feels superior to me or more entitled to a bigger share of the world. From there they can reason that lower forms have 2 purposes, one to evolve to their level and those that don’t evolve should serve those who have.
These level 5’s can justify themselves by pointing to radical 4’s who do ANYTHING for their god.

While Mr. Toilet is a troll, the reality is that there are a lot of people like him (or her) in te world. And while Duncan does look creepy, I am sure that he could look good as well.
We all have a bit of Toilet within us – that is why we can get ripped off by good looking people. Look at the more upscale car dealers – everything is “nice” and clean, but odds are they will fuck you up the ass harder than the local grease monkey with a car to sell!
Thats why i send my hubby to the car dealers…he can clench his bum cheeks much tihgter than i can, thus thwarting any attempts at ass fucking, lol.
Oh my gosh, I was going to send a message one day to this website about this guy to write a story about him, he is sick. I am so glad they wrote about him. He lived a couple blocks from my dad shortly before he went on his killing spree. My dad saw him all the time at the grocery store and always got creeped out by him. Its sad that we live in a society where people should always have to lock their doors at night, but in this case, its a huge reminder to us to all LOCK OUR DOORS, because this guy was prowling around the midwest scoping out people who be an easy target. That poor family, that little girl will never be the same. Shame on him.

Why is there not a law that allows paroled individuals of violent crimes to be micro chipped (preferably in the head or nads)? No registry needed then, huh? To the parolee: Do like it? No parole.

Not a chance. He is so deep in isolation that he barely gets to talk to guards. He is a marked man, and everyone knows it. They would not allow him in GP even if he begged for it, with anything short of a supreme court ruling.
However, I don’t think the prospect of being Bubba’s bride would induce the same terror in him that it would in most men. Duncan was a hot commodity in prison when he was confined at age 16, and was raped repeatedly. After he was out of prison he was advertising on sex sites dressed in drag (using the name Jazzy Jet, I think) looking for what appeared to be violent partners. That may be what he knows and what is embedded into his psyche (along with pedophilia). It’s hard for us to imagine, but it happens.

One thing not in this story that I know about this case, maybe it is already incomments but I am not going to read them all… in Washinton when Duncan came up for parole there was already a law in effect to keep sex perverts like Duncan in prison indefinately. The report on Duncan stated that Duncan could not be rehabilitated and would be a dire threat to society if ever released. They released him anyway- released him to molest and murder an entire family.
