On Thursday, January 10th, 2009 a grand jury ruled that the 19-year-old Arielle Smith should stand trial on a second degree murder charge after she was ruled mentally competent. She was initially arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder, but a judge found sufficient evidence to reduce the charge to second-degree murder, which means she could spend the rest of her life in prison. Arielle remains in the JPCC Correctional Center in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

On Friday, January 23rd, 2009, a three-judge panel in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Common Pleas Court determined that 23-year-old Amber Hill suffered from a severe mental disorder when she drowned her two daughters on October 1st, 2007.

“The court concludes she did not know the wrongfulness of her horrific acts,” said Judge John Sutula.

She’ll stay in jail, where’s she’s been since the night of the murders, until a hearing to decide whether she should be committed to a State Mental Institution. The date of the hearing hasn’t been set yet.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Mark Mahoney said the state believed Hill should be hospitalized.

“We will argue she is a danger to herself and others and that she be committed to a psychiatric institution,” he said.

Christopher Gray, 25 of North Haverhill, New Hampshire has been described by friends as kind, loving, and hard-working. Christopher, although being diagnosed at an early age with developmental disabilities, had always managed to hold down a job and was described by those who knew him as a good guy that was always willing to help out when needed.

In addition to spending most of his life in state-run institutions, Christopher struggled with both cognitive impairments as well as speech impediments. Despite his hardships and differences from others, I am certain that Christopher and his planning team of professionals worked diligently to ensure that he was as integrated and adjusted to normal society as possible. Unfortunately, adults with developmental disabilities are generally too trusting of individuals and as s result, are often easy targets of ridicule and abuse – especially at the hands of those they know and who they do not suspect as a threat. Christopher was no exception to this rule, unfortunately.

Yusuf Evans was the proper host, when a cousin came from out of town, he took the time to ensure they (they have not specified the cousins gender yet) had clean towels and sheets, more than comfortable accommodations and even played chauffeur to them during their stay. Yusuf Evans felt the need to go even further than the typical host, he wanted to make the experience memorable for his cousin, so he lined up evening entertainment for them also.
