There are many reasons why people buy or adopt a pet–companionship, protection, or simply to enjoy that special bond of love and loyalty that exists between a human and a pet.
Most of us have known the joys of having a four-footed pal with whom we can toss the Frisbee around, or the fun of watching a little fur ball kitty get giddy with a catnip induced buzz. Most of us normal, sane humans, that is.
Normal and sane (or even human) is not a category in which Nicole Spatig belongs.
A few weeks ago, Beaver County, PA police arrested the 22 year-old woman in what they described as being the worse case of animal abuse they’d ever seen.
It all started when Nicole’s landlady noticed that the windows in Nicole’s apartment were open, which was odd, since it’s winter in Pittsburgh and rather chilly. When she went to Nicole’s apartment and no one answered the door, she let herself in. When she entered the apartment, a happy, barking German Shepherd greeted her, along with four well-nourished cats.
Um—wait—we’re not discussing a normal, sane human pet owner here.
What the landlady discovered was an unholy stench that probably made her retch, and a cage with a sheet 
over it. When she removed the sheet, she found a healthy, happy animal wagging its tail. (Uh-no-sorry again!) What she did discovered was a very dead German Shepherd who had been abandoned and left to starve to death in the apartment. It was clear that the dog had tried to chew his way out of the cage, because his teeth were intertwined around the bars of the cage. The dog, left alone without food or water, probably spent his last agonizing moments of life trying to free himself.
The police also found four starved cats in the apartment, who had managed to survive by chewing through cereal boxes and eating the contents. Oh, and there was a two and a half foot pile of feces in their litter boxes.
Authorities estimate Mya, The German Shepard, likely died several weeks before she was discovered.Spatig was arrested and charged with 10 counts of of animal cruelty, but was released after paying One Thousand Dollars bond
The four cats were taken from the home (if you can even call it that) and placed in the custody of The Humane Society of Beaver County. Rumor has it the editor of this blog (yeah, that’s right, I’m talking about me), is trying to contact the Beaver County people to see if he and his family can adopt one of those cats.
Nicole had a number of explanations for her actions. She said she’d been ill for weeks and had been staying with a number of friends, and had assumed her boyfriend had been caring for the dog. Except that doesn’t explain why there was a sheet over the cage and the windows were open and fans were on. She also told them she was there every other day to feed the cats and didn’t know the dog was dead in the crate. Uh—right.
We, the readers of PYSIH know the real reason for this dog’s death. It’s because his owner was a heartless, brainless, soulless bitch who deserves to be locked in a cage without food or water for the rest of HER life.

I love how in this world it’s ok to murder animals. In my eyes animals are people too. They have a heart, they have a soul and they are capable of loving. They are innocent too, just like children. The sh*tbags in this world know that it’s really risky to murder a human/child, so they murder animals instead. I think that the same punishment for murdering a human should be applied to murdering an innocent helpless animal. The justice system sucks!

One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life was whether to continue treatment for a cat or to put him down. He, and our other cats and dog are every bit as much a part of our family as the people. They require as much care as any of our children and they too, didn’t ask to be born or with us. We invited them in, and as such, we have an obligation to keep them fed, in good health and warm.
I hope this stupid little bitch has at least enough sense not to have any children.

My dogs and cat are like people to me, little people (okay, they are freaking huge) who rely on me for everything, and I can’t imagine letting them suffer. I am a proud mama of a 2 year old German Shepherd (a horse) and I would fight for him. He is in the house and I would not put him out for no one! My girls say that I love him more then them (not true but close).
My Bo won’t let anyone in the house, have to hold him and put him on chain outside til he can get used to them and then he lets them in until the next time. He is beautiful.

I agree Amy. I have a lab that I rescued 2 years ago and I absolutely love my dog to death…as if he were my son. When I scold him for tearing out the trash, or chewing on something, I immediately forgive him, because he looks so sad when I yell at him. I cannot imagine ever hitting him or abusing him in any way. I’ve always said that when I finally settle down and buy a house, I want lots of land fenced in, so I can take rescue more dogs. I could be like a doggy foster parent! I think its great that you and your husband help animals. I don’t think anyone realizes that even rescuing one dog, makes a difference.

Oh, and i have five children,,,the two oldest to one man, and the three youngest to another. They all live with my husband and i and neither of their ‘sperm doners’ pay child support or make any effort to contact them. Not a Christmas or birthday card, not a letter, a email…a phone call. Nothing. My oldest two have not seen their father since they were one and a half and two and a half.( over ten years) They spoke to him on the phone about five years ago and he told them he was going to hurt me badly. Funny…they never wanted to talk to him again.
The father of my yongest three has not been in contact for five years. He has my number, email address and home address, and we are not allowed to have his. Dont ask me why…i dont know. We have managed to track him down a few times, not for child support, but for the kids to touch base with him, and they chat for a while and he makes a bunch of empty promises that never come to fruition and then disappears from their lives again. They have stopped asking me to find him.
Megan saving a single child would make my life so much more worth something. My problem would be that I would beat the snot out of shitty parents. I’de loose my job after the first case.

Oh and also in that video they interviewed a neighbor she was saying that she had heard the dog barking like crazy then one day heard it stop and just “assumed” that the douche bag had gotten rid of the dog or someone had come and picked it up. I also think I remember that same neighbor saying that she noticed that she hadn’t seen douche bag in a while. Well sorry if it was me I would of gone and investigated!

My wife rented o some friend that were doing the same neglect thing to her 2 rabbits. As the landlord I did a number of things that were morally right but (I am not going to say it, less the bitch sues us)
1. Housing court said we had NO right to be in the house until they gave us the keys.
2. Called animal control – they were not interested in what I had to say – though they would send someone over to atleast assess the situation, but hen again that person may have turned inot a witness against us!
So as a landlord in Assachusetts, YOU are responsible for your tenants behavior, utilities, etc… BUT have NO authority to do anything about it!
My hometown of Springfield is now the 6th poorest city in the nation and it shows!

Hey guys… Why don’t we help Nicole find a little time to contemplate her actions… After all, it seems that it might help her out in multiple ways.
1. Time in a cell will help her learn how to keep things clean.
2. She will be able to reflect upon her actions and how she ended up in jail.
4. We can have the jailers deny her food & water to better understand how that poor dog felt as it wrapped it’s mouth around the cage bars in an attempt to get to the food other animals had access to.
So, how can we help Nicole out here. After all, many do not seem inclined to put this thing in jail for killing a dog. So, let’s help them see how important it is to them.
Can we find the e-mail & physical address of the judge who is overseeing her case? We have a few weeks that we can all use to industriously assist this young woman in attaining a maximum sentence for this.
Heck, we can even suggest the judge give her community service after she serves some jail time working at the towns dog park cleaning up feces… Then we can send her to the pound to give a proper burial to the animals they put to sleep…
Maybe it’s time we get the members from other sites, dog loving sites, to join us in this little endeavor also.

I live with 9 cats that we rescued over the past 10 years. 4 of them are special needs kitties, including a diabetic, one who has hyperthyroidism an one who is FIV positive. I keep this blog running partly in the hope that it increases awareness of all the types of crimes we cover on PYSIH. And I’ve had three heart attacks and am fully disabled. Talk is good, but action is better.

His food and water bowl is NEVER empty (well, when I get up in the mornings they are, but I filled them as soon as I turn on the coffee)

When I first found this site, this was an article I found while randomly poking around….I now cringe at the name “Nicole Spatig.”
Actually, I cringed and nearly cried the first time I read this and when I came across this article again, I shuddered, remembering the horrors. I am extremely sensitive towards cats (my little orange nine year old is in my lap as I type this) and cannot handle any kind of abuse or neglect of the little buggers. I just imagine those poor desperate kitties roaming around, looking for any kind of food, and having to claw their way into some cereal boxes because their heartless bitch of an owner decided to abandon them. And of course the image of the deteriorated conditions…a two foot pile of crap in the litter box? And I’d imagine poop and urine in other places as well.
While I’m not quite as much of a dog lover as I am of cats, I cannot help, but feel terrible for that dog. That dog got the worst of it all. At least the cats were still able to wander around and forage for food. The dog was locked in a cage, unattended, and forced to die a slow, painful, agonizing death. Then you have the final image of that dog’s teeth curled around the cage, knowing he was trying so hard to get free and get sustenance.
I want to shake this bitch. I want to hit her. I want to yell at her and say angry, vicious things to her. But I can’t. So I’ll just choose not to ever be around her or follow her example. Dumb bitch deserves punishment for what she put those animals through.

Animal neglect/abuse cases get me the most besides stories of young victims. i’ve had to put down 3 of my animals and i wanted to die each time. First it was my eldest rat because she had a tumor. The next was my diabetic min pin. The last was on new year’s day (lovely, right?), the “pet” i’ve had the longest, 13 year old Precious who’s back legs became paralyzed. It’s such a gut wrenching decision to make and the only solace i have from them all is that i was able to provide them with a happy home for their entire lives, that they didn’t end up with some douchebag who would leave them to starve to death or beat them or make them fight with other animals. When Precious was 2 weeks old, her mother, herself and her siblings were found in a DUMPSTER! i was more than happy to take her home with me when i was 8 years old, knowing no one could ever hurt her again. Then i hear about assholes who take the time to adopt these animals and give them hope only to slowly torture them for no reason at all. It makes me blood boil. If i ever cross paths with this cunt, God help me because i may go to prison.
