Jeffrey Martin
Gabrielle Bechen, 12, left her home in Greene County, Pennsylvania to ride her ATV to a farm where she was allowed to visit the horses kept there on June 13, 2006. She spent the most of the day there, grooming and riding the horses. Then, she got back on the ATV and rode home safely, and all was well in the world. Actually, that’s what should have happened. Instead, she crossed paths with evil.
Sometime after arriving at the farm Bechen was approached by 51-year-old Jeffrey R. Martin. It is said that Martin raped Bechen. After being raped, Bechen told Martin that she was going to tell her mother and father about it. Martin, in a panic, tackled the girl who was attempting to get away, and choked her so hard that he broke a bone and damaged cartilage in her neck.
After committing the rape and murder of a 12 year old child, Martin used farm equipment to move her body to a field where he buried her. Martin also buried her helmet and shoes each in different locations, and the ATV was buried beneath a manure pit. One of Martin’s jobs on the farm was hauling manure (what a genius this guy is.).
Gabrielle’s disappearance led to a 5 day search. Bechen’s body was found in a 5 foot deep grave under 100 pounds of lime (lime can be used to quickly deteriorate a body and destroy any physical evidence that is left behind.) Finding the ATV in the manure led the police to Martin who was arrested shortly afterwards.
Initially, Martin in a taped confession led by State Police and FBI investigators admitted to killing Bechen. On the tape Martin claims that Bechen, “out of the blue” told him she was going to tell her parents he was molesting her. Martin said he “panicked”.
Martin, since then has testified that a young man paid him $100.00 to help him bury an ATV and that there was a body in the back of the young man’s truck.
Martin, also testified that the confession he made on tape was only given after being physically and mentally tortured by State Police and FBI investigators. He claims he was put in a car with windows up on a hot day for 5 hours, with no water (Good.You think that was hot? Wait until you’re in hell.) He also complains that the FBI investigators who questioned him “yelled and screamed” at him.
On May 08, 2008, a Greene County jury found Jeffrey Martin guilty of first-degree murder, rape, sexual assault, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and other counts related to the murder. The same jury then only needed an hour to unanimously decide that Martin deserved to be sentenced to death.
Martin’s own daughter, Jennifer Martin, who was sitting with the Bechen family in the courtroom thanked God when her father was sentenced to die.
Martin’s lawyer said that his client has intentions to file an appeal, and maintains his innocence.

I bet there was some abuse of his daughter as well; it just may not have surfaced. Not necessarily sexual stuff, but I bet he had a temper or was some type of paternal creeper embarrassment of a dad.

I know the response was tongue in cheek, but I had to voice this little tidbit in her defense.
It’s an attempt to regain power after losing it. Kids do it all the time when they lose a fight or argument. “My Dad can beat up your Dad,” is also an extension of this, only the goal is to establish an authority that others can fear. It’s an instinctive response to seek a power or authority figure your attacker might fear and try to force them to fear that, so they won’t do what they just did, again. The problem is, that same fear can lead to a feral response to avoid that danger. I don’t doubt he panicked, I just doubt that he didn’t in part of his brain already have her death planned.
She was hurt, she was angry, she was scared and she was trying to make sure it didn’t happen again. 12 year olds aren’t known for their cold calculation, add rape, injury and fear to the equation, and I can only say, “good girl, you did what you could.”
A lot of people…kids and adults…own ATV’s in the country. It’s just as common as owning an car. I’ve had one since I was little and could never imagine not having one. The parents were not at fault here and it wasn’t like she was out racing the damn thing.

I live near where this happened…. we’re talking straight country, as far as the eye can see. 12 year olds roam on ATV’s without the fear of pedo-murdrers and their parents never bother lock their doors at night.

WHAT AN ASSHOLE! I was wondering where this story was going when I read the first sentences. Then I saw the picture of the old ugly man, and went “damn, I know where this is going”:-( I’m so tired of hearing the “they yelled at me” excuse. This son-of a bitch had to be a piece of work if his own daughter thanked god he was sentenced to die, I just hope he is taken out by a little “prison justice”.

Wouldn’t it be difficult to find an ATV buried under a pile of manure? Can dogs really sniff that out? Yikes. This little girl had probably known Martin, if she had regularly visited the horse farm. What a betrayal of trust she must have felt, on top of everything. Yes, Martin deserves hell, and beforehand to be buried underneath a mound of manure.

All the shit on the farm gets shovelled into one huge pile. Theres horse shit, cow shit, cook shit, sheep shit….it really piles up after a while and can be used as fertilizer on the vege patch or to hide a kids ATV. You never know when your pile of shit will come in handy;)

I have no problem with a kid having an ATV in the country…. the child is using it for transportation, not to be Evil Kenevil III like a lot of city lids do.

Man, I remembered when this happened. This happed about 20 mins away from where I use to live and my ex actually worked with this girls mom. It was so sad when they finally found her. The hunt seemed a lot longer than 5 days though. I like to believe that there is a very special place in the pits of hell for people like Jeffrey Martin.
