UPDATE: Shaun Earl Arender
Back in September of 2007 we did a story on the sexual assault and murder of six-year-old Hannah Mack down in Navarro Mills Lake, Texas. At the time, Hannah’s Mom’s live in boyfriend and certified child pornographer, Kevin Wayne Anders, was the primary suspect, obviously for good reason. However, a few days later, Shaun Earl Arender was arrested and charged with both the rape and murder of little Hannah after his DNA matched up with a semen stain found on the girls shirt.
Anyways, lately there was some interest in how the case against Mr. Arender was progressing, specifically from one of my favorite new readers, “A Thing Called Cat”, so I did a little digging and it seems like Shaun hasn’t had the best time while he’s been locked up. But first, why don’t we get the official court business out of the way. After his arrest, Arender was sent to the Navarro County jail, held in lieu of a $2.5 million bond. His trial was scheduled to begin on August 18th, 2008, but Judge John Jackson granted a continuance motion by the defense and no new trial date has been set as of yet.
Now here’s the interesting stuff. On September 23rd, 2008, Arender had a hearing in front of Judge Jackson to protest his treatment in the Navarro County Justice Center. Let me quote from an article in the Corsicana Daily Sun, which describes the hearing in great detail:
“Currently, Arender is being held in a holding cell near the booking area with no clothes or underwear and only two blankets, two mats and toilet paper. His legal papers are kept in the booking area, and although he is allowed to see them when he asks, the papers are removed when he’s through, a jailer testified.
“We’ve taken anything he might harm himself with out of the cell,” Lt. Richard Holloway, assistant jail administrator, testified Tuesday.
Arender has tried to kill or harm himself three times in the year since he was arrested, and he has been threatened by other inmates, Holloway said.
“We have him in there for his safety, like protective custody,” Holloway said. “I just don’t want anything to happen to him.”
Under questioning from Mark Griffith of Waxahachie, Arender’s attorney, Holloway said he ordered the defendant a “humane smock” a poncho-type article of clothing that covers a prisoner down to his knees, but Arender tore it up within five to 10 minutes.
Griffith asked if other alternatives had been tried, such as a jumpsuit with Velcro fasteners, or a paper jumpsuit.
Holloway said he was afraid Arender would push the paper jumpsuit down the toilet.
“He put a sheet in the toilet, when he had a sheet,” Holloway said. That incident required a jail visit from Roto-Rooter.
Holloway said no paper jumpsuits are available now, and he can’t order anything “until after October,” the beginning of the new fiscal budget year.
Also testifying Tuesday was Adan Munoz Jr., executive director of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. He said the nudity and most other restrictions weren’t violations of jail standards, however, he said he was concerned about Arender’s inability to access his legal papers.
Griffith asked what danger the papers pose, and Holloway pointed to the metal closure brads on envelopes.
The brads could be removed, Griffith suggested. “What’s he going to do, paper cut himself to death?” Griffith demanded.
“I don’t know what he’d do with it,” Holloway answered.
Under questioning by District Attorney Lowell Thompson, Holloway said Arender has at various times stuffed papers in the toilet, tried to swallow a pencil, and resisted jailers over some incident and, after being pepper-sprayed, he tore out a metal partition that was bolted to the concrete.
One of his attorneys, Monica P. Bishop, testified that the multi-purpose room wasn’t sufficiently private for conferences, and asked that Arender be unshackled during meetings with his lawyers.
Jackson asked if Bishop and Griffith would waive liability to the county if their client hurt them while unshackled. They said they would. He also asked if Arender’s family would waive liability if he hurt himself with clothing, and Griffith said they couldn’t speak for the family.
Jackson said he would decide later on the clothing issue and the unshackling.”
Now I realize that this is a serious case, and these are probably serious legal issues with serious legal ramifications, but comon’ guys, some of this hearing played out like a skit on Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Two highly educated lawyers arguing about whether a naked man can do harm to himself with the metal clasps on a manila envelope? Now that’s silly!

Poetic justice for what he did to that innocent child! Don’t feel so big and bad now, do ya? Prison inmates scarier than terrified six-year-olds, huh? I would be really happy if, by chance, some inmate ” accidentally” got to him, but this brightened my day a little!:-)

The more serious the charge, the less “reconsideration” time should be given.
In such cases this should be looked upon as a Post-Natal Abortion – the POS is given the right to abort themselves, abort the rest of their lives. If a woman can choose to abort a baby, then why can’t a POS abort themselves?

i really couldn’t care less about keeping this guy from hurting himself but i sure am glad he’s suffering. The thought has brought a smile to my otherwise dreary day.

Something just doesn’t seem right about this story. The father has to be involved…it’s too weird. I’ve read all the news clippings, and it just seems like there’s a lot more to the story that the public is not being told…

After reading the origional story, i have to agree. I mean its a bit of a coincidence that both the dad ( step dad i think) and Arender were pedophiles and were neighbours. The reason the step dad was first suspected was that he had kiddie porn on his computer. And how does anyone sleep through a little girl being raped and murdered ? Surely there would have been some noise. And i wondered how he got into the house in the first place. I think that theres a good chance the two men worked together. But surely the police would have looked into the possibility?

So we know that Hanna’s mother kept letting sick fuckers near her kids. I am so fucking SICK of this shit. What causes these women to have so little maternal protection instinct that they can allow anything like this to happen to their kids – not just once, but over and over?

Thanks for the info Mazzi. And your right, some women seem more interested in geting laid than in protecting their kids. And they dont care who it is their getting their weekly leg over from, just as long as they’re getting it.
When i became a mother my life stopped being about what i wanted and became about what was right for my children.
Im not a perfect mother and i have made some mistakes along the way, and some of them affected my kids. But i never made the same mistake twice and my children are happy, well adjusted kids who recognize and respect that i am human and make mistakes, learn from them and move on.
If i ever found out that one of my ex’s had hurt my kids, i would never trust another man again, let alone let one around my kids.
As mothers we have a huge task of educating and protecting our children. Its hard work at times, but we do it because they are our kids, and there is no other way.
What is wrong with this country? Let him kill himself, save the taxpayers money.

I just read today, Feb 02, that it could cost up to 1 million dollars to put on this case. Again, this information comes from the Corisica Daily Sun.

Arender pled guilty to capital murder today in court and received a life sentence. In his testimony, he ALSO implicated the live-in boyfriend of little Hanna’s mother – who was arrested during the investigation of Hanna’s murder on child pornography charges. This man is my cousin, he lived with me, he had got into trouble 1 month b4 that happened but i told the cops it was me. And if I had let the cops take him, that little girl would be here today. He is not a monster, I took care of him. He was lost, and from talkin to him was on some serious drugs. He has hurt me in many ways, but i love him and if he wants death give it to him…..wouldn’t u want the same knowing you killed a lil girl?
he didn’t just kill that innocent girl, he raped her! there is a certain type of EVIL that can do something like that and i believe that you have the right to love your family member BUT he deserves as severe a punishment that we can legally give him. He is a monster Charles…. imagine if that was your little girl and some sick fuck raped and killed her… you would say they were a monster!
and to the little girl, as he raped her, he was a monster out of her worst nightmares-I hope he does have some sort of remorse and suffers, but I doubt it, I believe his remorse comes from the fear of being in prison and what could happen to him..and should happen to him. This child never stood a chance against two grown men and he could have stopped it but chose not to. He deserves no mercy from the courts society or the other inmates
