Alec Ahsoak
This is 53-year-old Alec Ahsoak.
You may recognize Alec Ahsoak from news reports that identify Alec as a recent winner of the Alaskan Lucky Time Pull Tabs jackpot, a lottery jackpot that was worth $500,000.
It’s also possible that you recognize Alec Ahsoak as the guy who molested you while you were a little girl. There are a few people running around who might, after all.
In 1993, Alec Ahsoak was convicted of molesting two girls under the age of 13, a crime which landed him in prison for four years. In March of 2000, Mr. Ahsoak was again arrested after he was accused of molesting another girl, one that he was babysitting. This time, a plea bargain was reached that put him away for six years on a single charge of sexual abuse of a minor – which really was a bargain for Alec Ahsoak because he managed to get out of the second charge of sexual abuse of a minor as well as a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.
So, Alec Ahsoak is a repeat sexual offender – a child molester who lucked out with a lottery win. It isn’t the first time this has happened, and it won’t be the last.
Possibly because they recognize the injustice, and possibly because portions of the lottery proceeds help the Anchorage-based nonprofit group “Standing Together Against Rape in Anchorage,” which offers support to sexual assault victims and does other nice things – or possibly out of jealousy – there are a few people here and there who have expressed a problem with a child molester winning a large sum of money.
One of the more vocal individuals with that attitude is enthusiastic 20-year-old Brandon Hughes.
Brandon Hughes fell into the first category of people who might recognize Alec Ahsoak.
On the afternoon of the 13th of January, 2009, after spotting Mr. Ahsoak as the lottery winner walked into a downtown bank, Brandon Hughes used his cell phone to call a friend to report his celebrity sighting. During that phone call, Brandon Hughes told his friend that he had seen Alec Ahsoak and was going to “beat his ass.” Brandon’s friend told Brandon not to do anything stupid, but Brandon probably realized that there weren’t many opportunities in life to beat the shit out of child molesting lottery winners and ignored the advice.
As Alec Ahsoak came out of the bank, Brandon walked up to the lucky guy and asked, “Are you the winner of that half-million lottery?” Ahsoak replied that he was, to which Brandon replied, “Bonk!”
Now, Brandon Hughes probably didn’t actually say “Bonk,” but that was the sound that the tire iron made as Brandon repeatedly slammed the tool into Alec Ahsoak’s head.
Alec tried to get away, running across the street, but Brandon Hughes followed him and caught up with him outside a nearby cafe. While holding Alec Ahsoak against the wall with one hand, Brandon applied his tire iron to Alec’s head with an industrious relish that is rarely seen in youth nowadays.
After a witness showed up to stop Brandon’s assault, Brandon let off the savage beating, running away while carrying his tire iron of justice. Once out of view, Brandon called his friend again and told him that he “beat the shit out of him” and that Brandon “didn’t know how bad the guy was hurt.”
Alec Ahsoak wasn’t hurt all that badly and was released from the hospital that night after spending a few hours being treated.
Police arrested Hughes at a gas station later that night after his friend that he called about the beating reported him and his location to the authorities. Though the tire iron of justice was long gone, Brandon Hughes matched the description given by witnesses and Alec Ahsoak also managed to identify him.
Brandon Hughes, who is from Los Angeles and had been in Anchorage only a short time, has been charged with assault in the first degree, along with tampering with evidence. At a hearing on the 14th of January, 2009, Judge Alex Swiderski raised Brandon’s bail to $150,000 cash.
Alec Ahsoak is expected to fully recover, and will be able to afford child prostitutes in Thailand for some time to come.

Absolutely…I probably would have called the cops on myself & cuffed myself while I was waiting too. The only problem is I’m not sure I would have stopped unless several people managed to physically stopped me.

I’m not entirely sure that vigilante violence can never be excused. It tends to get out of hand, and the government certainly doesn’t like it, and sometimes there’s that whole problem with mis-identifying the subject of the violence…but vigilantism can be extremely satisfying.

The first word that comes to mind while reading this story is of course…’succulent’.:o) The next would have to be ‘satisfying’..
What’s satisfying to me is the fact the guy did not actually die…
Brandon got to beat the shit out of his head and does not have to spend the rest of his life in prison…Sure the bad guy will still walk the streets molesting, as someone always will. On the bright side, Brandon’s hands are not stained..

This is great, having a story by admin on the board again. For all you new folks, this is how good we all had it at the before last Fall. 2 or 3 of this quality of story every couple of days. Those were definitely some great times for this blog, no doubt about it. Now you all can see why I don’t try to be admin…because I’m just not that good.

Fuck it, Brandon took matters into his own hands… Alec gets what he deserves. Sometime a few years in prison isn’t enough, and when great things happen to scumbags, we get mad cause we know between them or good people, good people deserve it more than bad.

Why can’t there be some kind of ‘three strikes’ for child abusers/molestors/murderers?
As in each charged count whether towards one child or individual counts against different children? One count of physical abuse, one of sexual abuse, one of neglect… or any combo— auto serious jailtime.
It makes no sense to me that someone is taking up jailspace for having bought pot or having/growing amounts for personal use….. but people who abuse/molest/neglect children are right back on the streets. Yet the druggies don’t even have to ‘register’ as ‘drug offenders’ when they get out. That tells you that the system KNOWS who is more dangerous, yet does nothing about it.
I’m no druggie, but I can tell who has the capacity for more harm, and it isn’t the potheads. Druggies hurt themselves. Child abusers hurt OTHER people. Makes no sense to me.
When the druggies get out of jail, they don’t get their drugs back to abuse some more….. yet child abusers often get their children back, or are allowed more access to children- if they’re even punished. It makes my head hurt.

If someone is CONVICTED of such a crime, their debt to the victim is NEVER fully paid. Thus when let out of jail (if any time was ever served), the offender should have to compensate the victim according to the state’s child support laws!
Under such a system, Alec’s wages would be garnished to all his victims and when such a POS hits the lottery, all his victims get a share as well!
I hope Brandon raises awareness that child molestation stays with the victim for life and those who even think of abusingtheir children realize that the kids will be picking their nursing homes!

Of course he deserved it, but I think it’s unreasonable that the “last straw” was his winning the lottery. It’s a game of luck; no one deserves to be beaten just because he got lucky, no matter his past crimes. If Brandon has beaten him just because he was a sex offender, it would be a different matter–though even then, the kid is almost as twisted as him. Anyone who results to beating a guy with a tire iron is seriously screwed up.
Imagine that this guy was living in your town. In your neighbourhood and had molested a bunch of kids you knew and had gotten away with a slap on the wrist for it. I don’t think he is screwed up. How do we know that his little sister, a niece or anyone else that he knew wasn’t one of the victims? I think what he did is what most of us want to do with a lot of the sick freaks.
Where I live there is a sick freak that lives in my neighborhood that raped a 3 year old about 26 years ago (at the time he was around 15) and he served 5 fricking years for a 3 year old being raped.
I had heard this while I was growing up and then after I had kids and moved to this place (16 years ago) I realized who he was and talking to a neighbor that also worked with she let me know that it was true and that it was her daughter that was raped, she was pregnant or she would have gotten a hold of him (wouldn’t have stopped me)
I have told my girls from the day that I started letting them play outside only on the porch, that if they see him outside they were to come running to tell me. They were about 10 and 11 then, up till about 2 years ago they weren’t allowed off the porch and now they are 16 and 17 & bigger than me (can hold their own) but if they are outside I am at the door every 2-3 minutes looking out and if I don’t see them I go to looking for them or hollering “where you at”. They say I am to overprotective but I say that one can never be overprotective.
I love my girls and I would do the same thing Brandon did if I were ever in that position to.
Better to be over proective than to have a child dead or harmed.
Im the same with my kids, although they are young still ( 13,12,10,9 and 7) i dont see that ever changing. I will always worry abut them.
That’s the way I see it Amy. It is my job as their mother to protect them while they are young, and I know that I will be one of those mothers who will always be trying to protect them even when they are my age.

I live in Alaska, and was just one of EVERY SINGLE ALASKAN that was horrified by this lottery “winner,” silently cheering for this “hero,” & disgusted by our inability to change the situation. This type of abuse seems to be far too common in the native villages – just look at the State Troopers’ sexual offenders book(s). It’s horrifying, made all the more so by the lack of substantial sentencing for these crimes.
