Keith Luke
Keith Luke, 22, was known as a loner in his neighborhood of Brockton Massachusetts. Most people would tell you he was a polite guy who pretty much kept to himself, but no one really, really knew him even though Keith was born and raised in Brockton. On Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 Keith Luke decided to introduced himself to his neighbors.
At around quarter past 12 Luke knocked on the door of 20-year-old Cape Verdean immigrant, Selma Goncalves, his former neighbor. He had with him a backpack containing a hammer, two pairs of handcuffs, a mouth gag and blindfold. He also had an illegally purchased and unlicensed 9MM Hi Point semiautomatic handgun. Selma wasn’t home, but her older sister, who’s name is being withheld, did. Hopefully, she will live to regret it.
Using the ruse that he needed to use her phone to call a tow truck to trick his way into the house, he immediately overpowered the much smaller woman, handcuffed her, and began to sodomized her. He later told police he raped the woman because he “didn’t want to die a virgin”.
While he was assaulting the older sister, Selma walked in on him. She ran out the front door but Luke shot her in the back several 
times. He then returned to the sister, who was rocking back and forth clutching a Teddy Bear in her arms. Keith must have felt something for the girl, because he decided he should shoot her through the Teddy Bear. Unfortunately, Teddy Bears make terrible body armor, and she was seriously wounded by the rounds.
Keith Luke was now out of ammo, so he walked out of Selma Goncalves’ house and across the street to his black van in order to reload his weapon. Two Good Samaritans (one white, the other non-white) risked their lives and rushed to Selma Goncalves and her sister’s aid. Both women had stumbled out of the house covered in blood and collapsed in the street. As soon as Luke finished reloading his pistol, he began shooting at the group, aiming only at our non-white hero. He then took off in his van, looking for more non-white victims to kill.
Luke saw a 72-year-old Cape Verdean homeless man named Arlindo DePina Goncalves pushing a carriage on Clinton Street and pulled over. He walked up to the man and shot him point-blank in the face as the man held up his hand to protect himself. He shot the man again in the back as he ran back to his van, jumped in and took off again.
Two Brockton Police Cruisers caught up with him and a running gun battle ensued. Luke hit one of the cop cars several time, narrowly missing the officer in the driver’s seat. His gun jammed, and in the process of trying to clear the feed he lost concentration and ran into 
two cars. He struggled to get out of the truck and tried to flee on foot, but gave up after a short chase.
Police took Keith Luke down to the station, where he was more than happy to tell anyone who asked the rest of his plans for that night. Apparently he was going to lay low for a couple of hours till the local Synagogue’s Bingo Night festivities had kicked in. He would then crash the party, so to speak, kill as many of the Jewish Bingo players as possible, and then stick the barrel of his pistol under his chin and put a bullet in his brain.
Rabbi Joshua Cohen of Temple Beth Emunah, the Conservative synagogue Luke planned to attack, said he had never heard of Luke and believes he randomly targeted the synagogue. He said investigators told him Luke was acting alone.
“As much as we like to think we’ve moved forward in our society and culture, hate and racism still exist, and it’s really unfortunate,” Cohen said.
According to the Boston Globe, The two victims were well liked in their communities and will be sorely missed. Allow me to quote from one of their articles on this tragedy:
Arlindo Goncalves’s sister, Amalia Goncalves, 37, speaking Cape Verdean Crioulo, said her brother was “an old man who lived out on the street, didn’t hurt anyone.”
Arlindo Goncalves worked as a bricklayer in Cape Verde and arrived in the United States about 18 years ago, his sister said.
A father of eight, he sometimes lived with three adult children who are in the United States but ultimately insisted on his independence.
“He had been talking about going back to Cape Verde, because he would have a better life there with his [five] children and the rest of his family,” Amalia Goncalves said.
The two sisters had worked for about a year in the Brockton production plant of Zoots, a chain of dry cleaning stores, said Patricia O’Leary, co-owner of 17 stores. O’Leary said co-workers were close to them and were weeping in the plant yesterday.
“They all spoke about these two girls and how friendly they were and how funny they were,” O’Leary said. “They were very well liked. It’s just awful.”
A close friend said the woman who was killed was a “poderosa meiga,” a person with a magnetic personality respected by her peers.
“She acted the mother to all of us,” said the friend, Lori, who asked that her last name not be published because of the ongoing criminal investigation. “She was very strong, a very strong girl. She was always smiling and she was brilliant.
For his part, Keith Luke showed all the remorse of a typical white supremacist:
“I’m sorry I shot at the cops, but I am not sorry I shot those people at the house.”
But it doesn’t end there folks. In an interview with The Enterprise, a local newspaper, his mother, Dara Luke, said her son was diagnosed with psychopathic tendencies, major depression and paranoid schizophrenia when he was 14 and hospitalized for 4 years. She said her son was hospitalized at “lots of places” as a teenager, but declined to be more specific. Sources have said he spent time at Taunton State Hospital.
Mrs. Duke and David Luke, Kieith’s father, have been divorced for many years. David Luke’s birthday is Jan. 21, the same day as the slayings. Hmm….
Thursday morning — the same day his son was arraigned on murder charges — police went to David Luke’s Brockton apartment on a warrant to commit him to a Fall River treatment program, police said.
The elder Luke, 42, was highly intoxicated and threatened to kill police officers as he was taken from his apartment on Chatham West Drive, police said.
Keith Luke is being held by Brockton Police on multiple charges including the murders of Arlindo Goncalves and Selma Goncalves and the rape and attempted murder of Selma’s older sister. Latest reports from the hospital say she is in critical but stable condition with several gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

for those who dont know, cabo verde (cape verd in inglish) is an african country, 10 island in the central west africa in the atlantic ocean, the victms was mulatos (mix, white and black ) but Cape verd is 80+ % black. What’s weird is that I am from Massachusetts and I read the news daily and I never heard about this until reading it on this site. Brockton is about 20 miles north of where I live and I heard nothing. I find that weird.
you know, the first couple of lines could’ve been about me. i’m a polite quiet person who mostly keeps to himself. quite shy as well. i fail to understand how a person who sounds so similar to myself can commit such terrible crimes, i wouldn’t dream of even contemplating such things.

This really distubs me. I live about 2 towns over from where this happened and was horrified when I heard it on the news. This guy deserves the death penalty and I don’t know why we don’t have it in MA. I have to waste my tax money to keep this fat cow in jail…he killed an innocent man & woman for no reason. I feel bad for the surviving sister and my thoughts are with her.

Me too Lena. I didn’t have the picture of Selma yesterday, but I got lucky today and inserted in place of the arraignment photo. She really was a beautiful girl and gave her life trying to save her sister from that fat loser. Her death speaks volumes about the way she lived her life, and I wish I’d had the chance to know her.

Sounds like he probably didn’t have the best role models to guide him through life and was probably at the bottom of the economic ladder.
