Karl Wesley McKay And Samantha Kematch
Little girls are fun. They like to hold tea parties, and dress up dollies, and play outside in the sunshine. They like to pet kitties and help make supper. They also like to be shot with pellet guns and eat their own vomit. Or thrown down a flight of stairs onto a hard, cold concrete floor.
Unfortunately no one told Karl McKay (He’s the guy on the left in the above picture), 43 and Samantha Kematch, 24 that little girls didn’t like that. In June of 2005, Phoenix Sinclair was murdered by her mother Samantha and her stepfather Karl. Months before, they shaved Phoenix’s head and withheld food from her. They also beat and tortured her.
Her face was covered in cuts and bruises, she was filthy, and starving. Her half brother attempted to give her food and water during a visit to the home, but was threatened by Phoenix’s mother. McKay would pick Phoenix up by the neck and strangle her, then throw her on the ground where she lay twitching and trying to breathe. She wasn’t allowed to use the restroom, and instead spent days in soiled clothes.
She lived in a pen in the basement, all alone. She was five years old. Phoenix was never allowed outside. The only time her mother and her mother’s boyfriend let her outside was to take out the garbage — and while she was out there, McKay would shoot at her with a 22 caliber pellet gun. Just for fun. Cause shooting little kids IS fun, y’know. I bet Phoenix loved the part where her stepfather would shoot at her and tell her to “run”.
Phoenix was just a little girl, but she lived a hellish life. The day she died McKay threw her three or four feet on the basement floor. She lay there on the cold floor, naked and terrified, and stopped breathing soon after — since concrete and soft little children’s bodies don’t mix well — and she was finally free of the torture McKay and Kematch had inflicted.
They tried to revive her beaten little body for about five minutes, but when that didn’t work, they wrapped her up in a garbage bag and buried her in a shallow grave next go a garbage dump. They scrubbed the floor and painted it to hide the evidence of what they had done.
Phoenix’s body wasn’t discovered until 2006 on the Fisher River reserve, but in the meantime, McKay and Kematch tried to pass off another child as Phoenix — so that they could continue to receive welfare payments.
Apparently it worked, since they continued to receive money from the government, and nobody noticed that poor little Phoenix was just… gone. Finally McKay’s two sons from another relationship told their mother what they had seen at their father’s house. She contacted authorities and informed them that Karl McKay and his girlfriend Samantha Kematch had tortured, beaten, starved, and finally killed an innocent little girl. Police began an investigation in March of 2006.
Child welfare authorities had attempted to investigate prior to Phoenix’s death, but when sent away by Samantha Kematch, closed the file and did no further investigation. the child welfare system in Manitoba is under review.
On December 12th, 2008, Samantha Kematch and Karl McKay were both given Life Sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years.
The automatic sentence was handed down after a jury unanimously convicted them of the first-degree murder of Little Phoenix minutes earlier.
During the trial, the oldest son of Karl Wesley McKay testified about what he witnessed at this home on Fisher River Cree nation. When he testified about sneaking Phoenix some bread and water, and how she looked at him and said, “thank you”, he began to cry.
Kematch remained defiant to the end.
“Everybody can say what they wanna’ say,” she told the court. “Call me whatever you want. I never did this and I know that and Phoenix knows that.”
Who deserves hell? Karl McKay? Samantha Kematch? All the child welfare authorities who never investigated?
All of them.

I mean we all know that child abusers are so honest and always invite you into their homes. They will sit and chat quite openly about their methods of abuse over a hot cuppa and some oatmeal biscuits.( yes, that was sarcasm )
Obviously for DCP to visit the home there were concerns raised about the childs welfare. And they just accepted being, “sent away?”
What the fuck? They left her there to be beaten and starved and to die. And then to degrade her even more she was buried near a garbage dump.
God i hope this little angel can finally have in death the peace and dignity and love she never recieved in life.

Child Welfare needs to be sued for this. I am appauled. They are a monster of an agency with inefficient morons who never, never seem to stop the abuse that is going on against children. They were also in the picture when Hannah Mack was raped and hung, too. Gee they do a wonderful job, don’t they. How emberassing for this country. The rep from Child Welfare was probably happy and did not question anything when Samantha asked for the case to be closed because it ends up being less work for their lazy asses with more time to take hour-long lunches.
This system needs some serious restructuring.

Yes it was the saddest part of all, I can picture her pretty little face whispering thank you and so grateful someone gave her bread and water… think about that, bread and water… not the boys fault because its all he could probobly get but she was grateful for bread and water… this poor child, this poor boy will have to live with this thought all his life… I am so sad over this story, I always wanted a little girl like this but had only boys…
She looks so much like me and my sisters and cousins, she could be our child… I cant get over this… I read a lot of shit and a few have hurt me to read but this is the absolute worst…
Wanted to add-
I have had a lot of experience with Natives on the reservation’s, here in the States. Now, it might be different there in Canada, but here, it seems like there is a whole lot of abuse and neglect that goes on out on the Res. Really substandard lifestyles. Of course there are exceptions. But, those people really need help. I’m not excusing in any way what happened to this little angel. I’m just saying, there are some definite problems with the Natives, with lack of resources and such.

First off, I would like to point out the fact that Phoenix’s Mom does not look like she skips any meals, fat slob that she is. Nice how these fuckheads were collecting money for the child they murdered. She probably ate all of Phoenix’s food. Fat beaitch.

I just don’t understand it. When I see pictures of that child, my FIRST instinct is to hug her. Even though she is not even my kid. Her fat little cheeks and squinchy little eyes just make my maternal feelings explode.
I wish to God there were some way to identify people who lack whatever element that causes those feelings of maternal responsibility to exist. I would promote paying them welfare if they did not recreate.
Child services? Pah! I have done research into so-called child services (some of you may recall from last summer when I looked into Philadelphia’s mishandling of a disabled girl), and with very few exceptions they are a bunch of bureaucratic whiners, who spend more time complaining about their jobs than helping the children. It’s time for a complete overhaul of the entire system.
Many of these children, if they survive, grow up to become fucked-up individuals themselves. They are the criminals, the druggies, the abusers of the next generation. And we have no way to stop it. The system is designed so that the poorest and most ignorant people get rewarded for having more babies – that they are unable to take care of.
No one will say that poor women, who can’t take care of their kids do not have a RIGHT to produce those babies, because it is insulting to poor people. Well, goddamn it! I will say it! If they are unable to feed, clothe and provide necessities for their children, then they have no right to have them. If they can’t prevent people from using their children as punching bags, then they have no right to have them. Period!
These fucktards used a stand-in for the child they destroyed, to make sure their welfare checks kept coming. CPS let Phoenix down, the welfare system let Phoenix down, and society let Phoenix down. But we are all just secondary players – the adults who killed her bear the ultimate responsibility. May they fry in hell. (And Satan better watch out for Samantha – she looks capable of starting a HUGE grease fire once all that blubber starts melting.)

This is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard. It put me in mind of the book I read in school, “A Child Called It.” How can anyone be so damn cruel? It’s so weird how they singled one child out and didnt seem to abuse the others. Good write up Queen Bee, you had me on the verge of tears. RIP Phoenix. Burn in hell Karl and Samantha!

This story truly broke my heart as it seems that it did to you guys as well. How could anyone do this to a child? MY son is almost a holy terror that will just exhaust anyone that comes around him but at least he feels the right to act that way. That didn’t come out quite the way that I meant it. I am glad that my son feels like a child that pushes the limits sometimes. How awful it must have been for this child to have her innocence and sweetness taken away from by two stupid people overriden with rage.

Thanks God McKay’s boys had more Humanity and compassion than their father, or these two disgusting pigs may be still be collecting their welfare checks for Phoenix.
I have worked in the industry of Child Care/Welfare in Manitoba. I can say that this story fully shows the frustrations of those of us who work hard and who are not getting enough support in this field. It is incredibly embarassing as well. I hope that the publicity this story is getting will help those in our system realize that a child’s welfare is not something to be taken lightly. Maybe one day, those of us in the field of child care/welfare in Manitoba who work hard every day and strive to do the best for all children will be able to hold our heads high instead of being embarassed to admit it.
Well, I respect you MANITOBAN. It must be incredibly frustrating to be someone who wants to make a difference, and have your hands tied by bureaucratic bullshit.

As an adult survivor of child abuse these stories are the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around. I just don’t understand anyone could look into the face of their child (or any child for that matter) and purposely and maliciously harm them. I have raised two wonderful kids, a boy and a girl and I never once raised a hand to them. I never wanted my children to feel like I did growing up. What a sad horrible tragedy!

This story was huge, although NONE of the details were ever printed! It was all sort of swept under the rug, the papers said “she was abused and died” but not how she was abused or any further insight. They also were very vague about where they found her body or IF they even found it…after a month no more stories were printed about little pheonix. I am glad someone went public with the details. It hits home because this was my province, and it was soemthing I read in the papers daily. so..THANK YOU for telling the truth at last

I’ve just read the news article on the link supplied by tashy, and i’m absolutley mortified. How DARE the murdering bastard of a stepdad act all sorry over Phoenix’ death, it’s as if he’s actually convinced himself he’s not to blame!! As for fatso, she should have the blubber flayed from her body with a blowtorch. How any mother could carry a child inside her for 9 months, give birth to it then treat it no better than something she’s just trodden in, is beyond me.
Even though that little girl was starving and probably in a great deal of pain, she still managed to say ‘thank you’ for the food. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Amy… If you read the sharon wright and peter seaton story that happened here in britain a similar situation regarding child services occured… They visited once and after telling wright to enrol her daughter in school and register her with a doctor the case was closed, leaving those two beasts to torture a four year old to death. Child protection officers seem too wet to assert any authority half the time and only when cases like baby p make the news do we see an attempt at improvement… I read this stories and wish to god there was a way to REALLY make a difference, for now though, at least through this site i can vent a little anger at these atrocities with other similar minded decent human beings who do NOT kill, maim, rape, defile, neglect or otherwise abuse innocent kids… R.I.P Phoenix, may god bless you and keep you…
