George Brent Haynes
Any of you guys ever watch “The First 48″? Man, I really dig that show. Observing real detectives work a real homicide case, doing real interrogations of real suspects and witnesses is a crime voyeur’s dream. My wife and I have been watching this show for so long it almost feels like we know some of the detectives personally, especially on the Memphis TN Homicide Squad – Sgt. Caroline Mason is the absolute bomb! If someone ever kills my dumb ass I absolutely want her on the case.
So we were watching the show this morning, and they did a case in Kansas City, MO about a young man who decided to get back at his girlfriend’s brother for beating his ass in a fist fight by shooting into his SUV while it was full of the brother’s children on June 4th, 2006.
The young man in question is then 24-year-old George Haynes, a guy who apparently had a history of domestic violence and other anger related crimes. He had been arrested in 1999 for assault and sentenced to 90 days. He also has a long history of failures to appear, probation violations and was forced to attend an anger management course at one time. Some of this information is freely available to the public on the Missouri Court Records website.
In the days leading up to the incident, George had assaulted his girlfriend again, and her brother, Michael Bordley, had paid a visit to him to discuss the matter. Things got out of hand and it appears the brother slapped Haynes around a bit – probably in the hope that he could teach him a lesson about hitting on people who are weaker than you.
Sadly, George Haynes got the wrong message, and the path to tragedy was set.
After the confrontation, Bordley loaded into his car along with his sister and three children, including 2-year-old Jontai Hoskins, his daughter. Police say Haynes decided to follow them in his SUV. He then pulled up next to Michael’s SUV on the Passenger’s side. The AMW website describes what happened next.
“According to cops, Haynes was so mad, he put his own life in danger. He allegedly sat on the driver’s side window of the SUV while the car was in motion. Police say he kept one hand on the wheel of the vehicle and used his other hand to pull the trigger of a gun. Police say one of the bullets hit and killed 2-year-old Jontai Hoskins. They also say shrapnel from the bullets and steel of the car hit and injured Jontai’s brother and sister.”
Just two days before, Jontai Hoskins, along with her brother and sister relocated to Kansas City from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The trio of siblings moved there to be with their father — also a Katrina refugee. These poor people had survived a horrible natural disaster, only to have their lives torn apart, and little Jontai to lose her life, all because George Haynes couldn’t take a well-deserved smacking around.
Haynes, being the coward that he is, tried to run, but was quickly caught hiding at a relative’s home in Mississippi a few days later. He was charged with one count of Second Degree Murder, 7 counts of Assault in the First Degree, and 7 counts of Armed Criminal Action.
If you were fortunate enough to watch his interrogation, you would have seen that Haynes tried to tell investigators that he didn’t know the children were in the SUV. That, of course, was a lie, since he was present when Michael Bordley loaded up the truck after his little “talk” with George. The truth was he really didn’t care whether the kids were there or not.
On June 6th, 2006, almost two years to the day since he had killed little Jontai Hoskins, George Brent Haynes pled guilty to all counts in exchange for the dropping of the 7 assault charges. He was sentence to a total of 30 years in prison.

She looks like she should be a total idiot, she plays up the whole “I haven’t got a clue” thing, and then ziiiiing! she gets them! Hell? Hell yes! 30 Years? Bullshit! Jontai didn’t get HER 30 years. At the very least he should have gotten the amount that she could have been expected to live – maybe 70 years.
But this begs a real question – how the hell could they have done a plea deal like that? There was evidence, there were witnesses and there was circumstantial. There was no doubt he was guilty (no matter what the disclaimer says). I could see them letting him plead down to life, but 30 years? That’s disgraceful and makes a fucking mockery out of our judicial system!
I agree that 30 years isn’t at all long enough. He’ll be 54 or younger (if he gets out on parole) and doesn’t deserve to have ANY happy years left to the rest of his miserable life. I hope someday he gets a conscience and is tormented by nightmares and visions of the little girl he killed, and I hope her suriving siblings send him hate mail for the rest of his life.
30 years is WAY too little for murder, but at least he’s serving some serious time.
i personally like watching animal cops Houston and Phoenix, great programs. i also feel like i know the officers personally, i know how they react to certain events, i know how they handle people, i know some personal details and all just from watching the program.
there’s little more satisfying then seeing some asshole who’s abused his pets being hauled of to jail, penalties for animals cruelty can be severe in some states :D
I whole heartedly agree that Haynes deserves hell, and I hope he is tortured for every minute of it. But I have a serious problem with his girlfriends brother, Michael Bordley. Perhaps I’m mistaken about the chain of events, but it appears that Michael went to Hayne’s place to “talk”. In my experience, such a visit is never to “talk”, it’s for an ass beating (which Hayne’s deserved), but why take your family along to confront a violent person!?! That’s incredibly irresponsible and stupid on Michael’s part.
When the detectives interviewed Michael Bordley on “The First 48″, he said he went there to tell Haynes to keep his hands off his sister, and it was George who started the fight. I took some poetic license when I called it an “ass beating”. It was just some pushing and shoving with Bordley getting a couple of punches in. I’m sorry if I gave the impression that Jontai’s Dad acted any way but appropriately.
I think that Bordley also went to collect, or rescue his sister, if I recall correctly. In other words, she was not with him when he went there, but was with him when he left. (I may be wrong – I saw this episode last year).
Either way though – I do agree that it might not have been the smartest move to bring the kids, but he may have had no choice. And, if he wasn’t planning on physically confronting Haynes, there would be little reason to think it might be dangerous.
Chilibreez- I was wondering that too. I mean, that’s kind of a dangerous situation to put kids in. As for George here, what a pathetic little man. I’m sorry, I take that back-this idiot should not be called a man. I hope he serves every second of the lousy thirty years he got for killing this little girl, and I hope somewhere down the line, he comes to understand what he has done. It’s too bad that Bordley did not make a point of hitting Hayes vehicle and knocking hom off. But who expected this?
If if Hayes had a clue and acted, Hayes would not be a hero for avoiding tragedy, but rather a villian
1. Risk of injury to minor(s)
2. A bunch of vehicular charges
3. Attempted or actual murder
Our society is made up of too many fuctards who can not tell the difference between a real hero and an attention loving camera whore. Example – someone rescuing a family from a burning building is a hero in many ways BUT a better hero would be the landlord who gets on a tennants case with regards to “borrowing” the smoke detector batteries for the kid’s toys!
I am sure Hayes was destined for hell long before this, but until the shots were fired, Bordley would be guilty of something that is frouwned upon by the court system. The courts and legal system want us all o be victims of some sort, it needs a few criminals around to justify its existance. Hayes got 20 – might serve 20??? He’ll be out again.
If the legal system was serious about eliminating crime, Hayes soul would be on he next down escalator!
I also think that 30 years is almost pathetic. He killed one baby and hit two more with shrapnel. He should have gotten 30 years for child endangerment and attempted murder on the other two children. I mean they could have put so many charges in there and made everything stick so that the would never get out. I mean they could have added disturbing the peace since the shots were fired in public, also his radio was probably bomping so they could have added a violation of the noise laws. Jeez, they could have socked him with anything and everything to get him longer than 30 years. Why would you ever drop charges in order to convict a child killer? I say keep adding them!!! It seems to be that any jury would have given him longer than that.

You know, I just realized something starr. George actually got 15 years for the murder and 15 for the assault. I couldn’t find out if he’s serving those concurrently or consecutively. He could be serving the two sentences concurrently, which means, he really only got 15 years. With good time he could be out in 10. That really sucks.
Let the GP know that he killed a kid and injured another child.

i remember watching that episode of the first 48 with the hubby. we were especially torn up over it because our daughter was the same age as jontai at the time. he deserves hell, and sooner than later.
I watched this story on a crime show last night. I saw that little girl dead on the excersize trampoline in the front yard and i cried. The looks on the faces of the officers attending the crime scene said it all.
And bravo to the older sister who only hours after the incident was questioned by the police and bravely told them that the colour of the car was ‘burgandy’ and that the person who climbed up out the window and shot at her was ‘Uncle George.’ What a kid!!!

Yes, Haynes is the bad guy in this story. But I have to ask myself what on earth was Bordley thinking taking his kids along to a smackdown? Haynes totally had it coming, I can’t dispute that, but what kind of father allows his young children to witness him beat a man up? Children should never be exposed to violence, even moreso when they’ve already witnessed and survived Mother Nature’s own form of violence. Her father should have been protecting her. He did not deserve to lose his daughter but if he’d been a bit more decent a man, she never would have been there in the first place.
